How are overweight and obesity affecting EU citizens?

Overweight and obesity are rapidly increasing across Europe, a new study has found. In several Eastern European countries, three-quarters of men are overweight or obese.

00:00How does obesity affect EU citizens?
00:08Overweight and obesity levels continue to skyrocket in Europe,
00:12according to a report by the European Food Information Council.
00:16This is the case among adults and children.
00:19Some three-quarters of men in Romania,
00:22Poland, Croatia and Slovakia are overweight or obese.
00:26The lowest prevalence was found in France, the Netherlands and Denmark.
00:31Meanwhile, the highest percentages among women
00:34were reported in Ireland, Romania and Croatia.
00:38France has the lowest prevalence at 30%, ahead of Austria and Denmark.
00:44By 2030, over half of Europe is expected to live with obesity,
00:49affecting up to 89% of people in some countries.
00:54A new UNICEF report found that obesity has now surpassed underweight
00:59as the most prevalent form of malnutrition.
01:0310% of school-aged children and adolescents, or 188 million people,
01:09suffer from obesity worldwide.
01:12The report warns that ultra-processed foods and fast foods,
01:16high in sugar, refined starch, salt, unhealthy fats and additives,
01:21are shaping children's diets through unhealthy food environments,
01:25rather than personal choice.
