00:00while we talk to Boomer this morning. Hey, Boomer.
00:02Hey, good morning, everybody. Are we all excited about the upcoming season or not?
00:07We are. We are. We are at Gillette Stadium this morning,
00:10and I must admit it was weird to see Bill Belichick coaching anywhere other than here last night.
00:17Yeah, it was an unfortunate game for him last night.
00:19TCU is a, you know, is a well-built team.
00:22You know, you could see that they have a little bit more speed than North Carolina
00:25and I think a little bit more organization and a little bit more incentive
00:29to go in there and beat the hoodie, but, you know, it's like Arch Manning.
00:33You know, this is like their first foray into this.
00:36They haven't been around it a lot, but I would say it's only going to get better from here.
00:41Well, we're on to Mike Vrabel, and the Mike Vrabel era officially begins on Sunday.
00:48And what is this team had four wins last year under Gerard Mayo?
00:52What's a reasonable expectation when it comes to wins for Mike Vrabel?
00:57You know what? They had eight wins the combined last two years,
01:00and they've been horrible ever since Tom Brady left.
01:03I would say nine wins, and I do have them winning a wild card this year.
01:08And I think the reason I say that is because, obviously,
01:11we all know how much money they spent in free agency this offseason.
01:14We all know how much they built up the offensive line.
01:17We also know that Drake May should take huge steps under Josh McDaniels.
01:21To me, that's the key relationship.
01:23I mean, Mike can do Mike's stuff.
01:25He can be the head coach.
01:26He can be the head coach of the offense and defense.
01:28He can make all the decisions whether or not to go for it on fourth and one.
01:32Do all the things that Bill Belichick did do when he was at the Patriots
01:36and when they were successful.
01:38But to me, it's a quarterback-driven league.
01:41And I believe that Drake May showed enough last year
01:44with a terrible situation around him
01:46where he should be able to get off flying this year.
01:50So I'm resting most of my predictions on him.
01:55I think they can get nine wins this year.
01:57I think they can win a wild card.
01:58I think the Jets are going to be a little bit better,
02:01but they're going to be quarterback hamstrung.
02:02I don't know what's going on down in Miami with Mike McDaniels.
02:05It seems like that thing is really teetering on collapse.
02:09And then, of course, you've got the Buffalo Bills,
02:11who are still one of the best teams in the league
02:13simply because of their quarterback.
02:15Boomer, you've been there.
02:16You know better than anybody you've been there before.
02:18What's the most important thing for Drake May going into his second year
02:23that he's going to have to do to get them to be that wild card team
02:26that you talked about?
02:27If I go back and I think about Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady,
02:31I think about preparation, Jermaine.
02:33You know, Tom knew everything before the ball was even snapped.
02:37And, you know, not every player is capable of that type of play.
02:41But, you know, I think Drake is smart enough.
02:43He's big enough.
02:43He's strong enough.
02:44He runs well enough, something that Tom did not do.
02:47I think that there are aspects to his game that Josh is going to love.
02:52And I just, to me, I just, it sounds, everything I've read,
02:56every introduction that I've seen or interview that I've seen of him,
03:02he seems like he's really into it.
03:04And that's the one thing that every NFL team demands of their quarterback.
03:09Be into it.
03:10Be prepared.
03:12You know, weather the storm, if you will.
03:13And I think there were a lot of storms last year that Drake May got up
03:16and went back to work.
03:18So I appreciate what he went through last year,
03:20which means to me, with Josh McDaniels, with the preparation,
03:24that he now has a cheat code as a coach.
03:28And I think that's the best thing that the Patriots have going for them right now.
03:33Boomer, something that Drake has talked about during this preseason
03:35is having to work on not getting too hot when he starts games,
03:39not being too jittery.
03:41And that's when he feels like he's making the most of his mistakes.
03:43So that's something he's been working on.
03:45As a former quarterback, how can you get out of that mindset
03:48and how can you kind of correct the mistakes you've been making
03:51by getting too hot out of the gates?
03:53You know, it's a great question.
03:55We saw this this past week with Arch Manning.
03:58Arch Manning was playing the game at a fever level.
04:01And the key to playing great quarterback is to be calm
04:04and to be able to take the big deep breath
04:07and see what's going to happen before it actually does happen
04:10and anticipate.
04:11So, yeah, it's a hard thing to kind of curtail.
04:14You want your quarterback to be intense.
04:17And we saw Tom Brady many years throw his helmet on the sideline,
04:21get mad at himself, get himself back into the game.
04:24I don't think Drake has that problem,
04:26but I do understand the question that you're asking.
04:28It's hard, but he has to have early success.
04:32And I think that early completions,
04:35a running game that's going to be stabilized,
04:38a left tackle that looks like he's going to be a stud.
04:41I mean, all the things that are around him this year
04:43compared to last year are so different.
04:45So hopefully that will allow him to calm down a little bit more
04:49and allow him to see the field a little bit better,
04:53make better decisions.
04:54And if he doesn't want to throw it,
04:57then he certainly has the ability at 6'4", 230 pounds to run it,
05:01which is a very rare commodity in the NFL these days.
05:05Boomer, you mentioned Brady.
05:07Dan Patrick made waves last week.
05:09He said that Tom has to pick a lane,
05:11either be an owner or a lead broadcaster for Fox.
05:15Where do you fall down on that?
05:17He's one of the greatest players the NFL has ever seen.
05:19He can do whatever he wants.
05:21I mean, I wish I could do all the stuff that he's doing when I was his age,
05:25but I remember that I was limited to one network
05:29and one kind of line of work around that network,
05:33and that was it.
05:34But things have changed.
05:35You know, I see Michael Strahan doing two different networks, Fox and ABC.
05:39So things have changed, and I'm sure Dan, for whatever reason,
05:44you know, feels pretty strongly about that.
05:46I don't.
05:47I think Tom is beyond reproach.
05:49I think he understands his role as the Raiders owner,
05:52but I think he also understands that he has to be as objective as he possibly can
05:56when he's doing all these games and meeting with all these coaches.
05:59So I really cannot see him having a meeting with Pete Carroll on Wednesday saying,
06:05hey, this is what I see, you know, in the upcoming game.
06:08I just don't see that happening.
06:11We know what Jerry Jones' answer is, but who won the Micah Parsons trade?
06:15I think right now, in the short term, it's got to be Green Bay.
06:18They've got to believe that their window is open for a championship
06:21and to add a player of this caliber, much like they did Charles Woodson
06:25and Reggie White back in the day, makes a lot of sense for them.
06:28And by the way, I'm really happy for Micah Parsons.
06:31It's not that I'm a fan of his, but what I am a fan of
06:33is when players actually get what they want.
06:36And very few players actually are able to do what Micah Parsons did
06:41and hold strong and hold fast and get the trade
06:44and get the contract on top of that.
06:47So the next five years are going to be really interesting in Green Bay
06:50and they're just going to be as interesting down in Dallas.
06:53Remember, you know, one of the reasons why Dallas was so bad last year
06:56is that Dak Prescott missed so many games.
06:59He didn't even play against the Eagles last year,
07:01but I do believe he has a 4-1 record in the last five games.
07:04So I think Jerry's expecting that their offense is going to be a lot better
07:07than it was last year without Dak.
07:09And I think he also felt like, you know, they needed to stop the run
07:13and they weren't going to be able to do it
07:14given the amount of money that Micah ended up getting from Green Bay.
07:18So one team's trash is another team's treasure,
07:21but certainly for the player, I'm really happy.
07:23Boomer, you talked about Drake May and his success
07:27and you brought up the young left tackle and Will Campbell.
07:30First three games of the season, he's going to have to deal with,
07:33obviously, Max Crosby, Chop Robinson, Bradley Chubb, and T.J. Watt in Pittsburgh.
07:40When you think about that for a young rookie who's coming into the league
07:45having to protect the blind side of a guy like that,
07:48what do you think's going through his mind?
07:50I hope those guys line up on the other side.
07:53That's probably the first thing.
07:55But the one thing, you know, if you watch some of the tape, Jermaine,
07:58and I'm sure you did, I mean, this kid's got it.
08:00He's got the attitude.
08:01He's got the want to.
08:03He's got the physical prowess.
08:04Maybe his arms are a little bit short,
08:06but everything that I've seen from him,
08:08I think he's going to be a great one.
08:10I really do.
08:11This is one of these kids that really loves football.
08:13This kid loves to pile drive players into the ground.
08:17You know, when you go against a team for the first time in a real game,
08:22like, you know, Pete Carroll will have a defensive scheme
08:25that maybe Will Campbell isn't familiar with.
08:28So he'll see different players, and he'll see different twists and stunts,
08:32and they'll try to take care of or take advantage of his inexperience.
08:37But I think this kid is really going to be terrific.
08:39I think it was a great draft pick, especially with the young quarterback now.
08:43And the one thing I will say, with Moses and with Will Campbell,
08:46you would like to think that Drake May would have a little bit more comfort
08:49in that pocket, and that's what I'm expecting.
08:52Good time to get this week's Drake take from Boomer Sison,
08:56which is presented by your New England Chevy dealers.
08:59Together, let's drive.
09:01There's some hemming and hawing around these parts about how often he should be
09:05running the ball, designed or not, and the risk.
09:09Where do you stand on that?
09:10But I am whatever gets him into the game.
09:13You know, Brian Dayball, the head coach of the Giants,
09:15when he was offensive coordinator of the Bills with Josh Allen,
09:19there were times during games, and Brian told me this,
09:22where Josh Allen would say, you've got to call a run.
09:24I've got to get into the game.
09:25I've got to get hit.
09:26And sometimes when you get hit early, it just kind of knocks all that nervousness
09:31that Courtney was talking about out of you.
09:33So I think he's a terrific athlete.
09:36I think he could do many things on the football field.
09:39Of course, you don't want to have him running the ball 10 times a game,
09:43unless, of course, he's doing it on his own and he's just extending plays.
09:47But I think we're going to see the athlete that he is this year,
09:51and part of that is going to be him running.
09:53I just hope it's not too much, and when he does run,
09:57I hope he has the wherewithal, the slide,
10:00because that's how you preserve your career.
10:03Boomer, Steph Diggs is kind of a head-scratcher for us throughout the preseason.
10:07We hear that he's amazing in practice.
10:09He's a leader.
10:09The guys are all following him, but then he kind of disappears.
10:12We don't see him at all during any preseason games.
10:14What do you think he can do for this team, especially week one?
10:18He's a head-scratcher for everybody, not just you guys.
10:20But when he's on the football field, he is a tremendous talent.
10:25There's no question about it.
10:27You know, what he did in Minnesota was terrific.
10:30It's unfortunately got hurt down in Houston.
10:32I think they're hoping that there's still a year or two left
10:36where he can go up and make some of those spectacular catches
10:39that he made for C.J. Stroud and that he made for Josh Allen.
10:42That's the hope.
10:43I mean, you've got to have some design player that can go out and make plays for you.
10:49I still think he's got a little bit left in him,
10:51so hopefully he gets off to a good start.
10:54The thing that I always worry about him is his body language
10:58and he's not afraid to complain.
11:01Young quarterbacks don't need that kind of guy in their ear the whole time
11:05on the sideline in the huddle.
11:07You want your young quarterback to be able to dictate what he wants,
11:11not what the wide receivers want.
11:13So that will be interesting to watch and see how that relationship
11:17between Drake May and Steph Diggs plays out.
11:20All right, Boom.
11:21I know that Cincy got you a Greyhound ticket to get out there,
11:25but let's be honest.
11:26When you look at the AFC and just even the AFC North,
11:32I mean, is there a chance Cincinnati could win that division this year?
11:35Is this the bounce-back year for them,
11:37but you've also got to deal with Baltimore, Pittsburgh.
11:39What's your take on just the AFC North and the AFC in general?
11:44Seems like there's going to be some juggernauts this year.
11:46Yeah, I think the Baltimore Ravens have the best roster in football,
11:49and I think it's another MVP-type season for Lamar Jackson.
11:53They've got a great coach.
11:54They've got a great system.
11:55They've got great players.
11:57They're going to be, to me, the best in the AFC,
12:00followed probably, you know, you've got to say,
12:03like Kansas City's going to be there.
12:05Denver's going to be there.
12:06I believe that Jim Harbaugh, even though they lost Slater,
12:09their left tackle, you know, he'll figure out a way to get to 10 wins.
12:13But Baltimore is head and shoulders above everybody.
12:16Buffalo, of course, is going to be right there.
12:18You know, the thing about it is,
12:19is when you start looking at some of these schedules that these teams play,
12:22I think the AFC East, you know,
12:24is like probably like a middle schedule strength of schedule.
12:29The NFC East is just a juggernaut,
12:32and so is the NFC North and the AFC North.
12:36Both of them, or all three of those different divisions,
12:40have really, really tough schedules, at least starting the season.
12:42So if the Patriots can get off to a reasonably good start,
12:45I still think they can get the nine wins.
12:48I think they're going to be coached up.
12:49I think they're going to be really organized.
12:51And I wouldn't be surprised if we're sitting here in about,
12:54I don't know, 17 weeks talking about who their first-round matchup is in the playoffs.
12:58Well, speaking of that, we'll get you on record when it comes to the Super Bowl,
13:03as we always do.
13:04And, I mean, do the Niners have a reasonable chance of playing in their own stadium this year?
13:11Easiest schedule in the NFL starting this season.
13:14Now, we never know how those things turn out,
13:16depending on who you're playing and what kind of condition they're in when you are playing them.
13:20But I don't think that they are a Super Bowl team.
13:23I still think it's the Eagles over in the NFC.
13:26There are a couple of tough teams coming out of the NFC North.
13:29It would be interesting to see what happens with the Lions,
13:32with the loss of two of their coordinators.
13:34I can't wait to see what Ben Johnson can do with Caleb Williams.
13:39And certainly, J.J. McCarthy's got to be under the gun.
13:41You know, they had a great season with Sam Darnold at quarterback last year.
13:44Let Sam go to Seattle.
13:46Now, all of a sudden, you know, they're going to be a team that will definitely be
13:49at least a nine-win team, depending on how J.J. McCarthy plays out.
13:53And then the one team that I think is going to be good if the quarterback is healthy,
13:58I think the Rams could be one of the better teams in the NFC as well.
14:03Question of the week for Boomer is brought to you by McFarland Energy,
14:06the region's most dependable provider of home heating oil delivery
14:09and expert HVAC services at McFarlandEnergy.com.
14:14Is there a danger that the engagement of the century is a distraction for the Chiefs?
14:23Oh, man.
14:24I don't know how you feel about this, but, you know, I think it's kind of sweet, guys.
14:28You know me, I'm kind of romantic at heart.
14:30Yeah, right, Courtney, right?
14:31I'm all of the ring.
14:34Yep, gorgeous.
14:36Yes, so gorgeous.
14:37I'm with a bunch of losers on this panel.
14:39Well, you know, the guys that you work with, Courtney, are meatheads.
14:43That's what they're not.
14:44Yes.
14:44Cynics.
14:45We own it.
14:46I have a meathead question quickly.
14:48After this weekend, you mentioned Arch Manning's awful performance in week one.
14:53Who is more likely to be an NFL head coach again, Bill Belichick or Matt Patricia?
15:01Wow, that's a really good question.
15:02I would say I still think Bill Belichick, but, you know, not Matt.
15:05I don't know, unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed for Matt.
15:08He's got that pencil stuck in his ear, and it's going to be staying there.
15:11And if I were him, I would stay right there at Ohio State because it looks like they got
15:14some pretty good players.
15:16Yeah.
15:16All right, Boomer, great to have you back every Monday.
15:18Thanks for taking the time.
15:19We'll talk to you next week.
15:21All right, listen, I want you guys to pick it up this year.
15:23You know, I'm looking for body language.
15:25I'm listening for it.
15:26And, Jermaine, I don't want you taking any of us down.
15:28You hear me?
15:29I mean, Wiggy had very succinct questions.
15:32I don't know if you noticed.
15:34I mean, to the point this morning.
15:35That's it.
15:36I like it.
15:37He wrote them down last night.
15:38Probably got on the chat GTP.
15:40I'll send you some money so you can get to Cincinnati, brother.
15:44Yeah, okay.
15:45Appreciate it.
15:45Have a great day, everybody.
15:47Let's look forward to a great season.
