00:00good morning guys it's gonna be a long day for me here at work
00:05you know you guys are happy you're winning everything's great and a couple guys get hurt
00:09i understand but man i'll tell you this was a uh measuring stick game as they say for the new
00:16york
00:16jets they kind of hung with the patriots but you know really the difference in this particular game
00:21is a young stud quarterback that's playing well versus a very competent old quarterback that is
00:28just you know unwilling to really throw the ball down the field and make some plays so i mean we're
00:35gonna have to discuss this ad nauseum today four hours down here while you guys celebrate a victory
00:41well how alarmed should we be about aj brown having issues catching the football boomer
00:48all right i knew this was gonna be your first question i want to give him a couple more games
00:53i don't want to overreact just to one game especially for a guy who's been out i know he's
00:57mercurial i know he's kind of a different type of player you know uh early on in the season we
01:02were talking about what was going on with drake man it seemed like uh mike vrabel was ever to get
01:06able to get through to him um if there's a guy in this nfl that can get through to aj
01:12brown it's
01:12going to be mike vrabel so i'm sure mike will have a couple conversations with him just just to pump
01:18him up not to you know criticize him or anything but just to get the best out of him so
01:23i i'm not
01:24worried about it just yet but if it continues to happen then i would say you got yourselves an
01:29issue but uh as long as you win uh guys will fight through it and you know the coach will
01:34have to get
01:35the best out of him yeah boomer i think somebody who caught the football for a long time i think
01:39he'll just be fine it's knocking the rust oh how many catches did you have by the way uh i
01:46had over
01:46like i want to say close to 300 in my career but i got a dog of the week yeah
01:51yeah it you know i had
01:52a few but 300 that's pretty good man no you know what hey i just did my part but the
01:57one thing i was
01:58really impressed with boomer and you know 236 236 all right there you go so the one thing i was
02:04really
02:04impressed with boomer was drake may and his performance to kind of continue what we've seen
02:09him do over the past few weeks here um when you when you're playing at the level he's playing it
02:15now
02:15and it seems like he's comfortable and he's even in the beginning game was a little little shaky
02:19but he was able to settle down what's that like to have that type of kind of you know confidence
02:24ability to not make dumb decisions like he's been able to do here for for the past few weeks
02:29oh you mean josh mcdaniels is still a really good offensive coordinator you remember that whole
02:34discussion that we were having about a couple weeks ago um then it was his fault and uh wasn't
02:38the player's fault i you know the last three weeks he's been great he's been really good and he's
02:43been good i think and i'll do in large part they're probably some of those conversations
02:47that we were just talking about that maybe aj brown will have with mike brable but you know
02:52your offense coordinator is your best friend when you are a quarterback and when you're a good
02:56quarterback and things are going well that offense coordinator is going to make sure that they get
03:00the best out of you so whatever happened three weeks ago i don't know you know what the answer
03:05for it is other than maybe some success and then going on the road and beating buffalo and realizing
03:11that you can beat one of the better teams in their building in a very very important game
03:16now all of a sudden your your level of confidence rises and you start playing the way that you played
03:21last year now i will say this this week is a short week it's thursday night it's at chicago
03:27cal williams was on the money yesterday and you know and ben johnson has cal williams they are
03:33completely different team this is going to be a huge test for the patriots defense it will be
03:39enormous and that will mean that drake may cannot turn the ball over in this game if they turn the
03:45ball over in this game it's going to be a track meet for chicago how long is aaron glenn's leash
03:51i think he's oh and seven uh in division games uh probably should have kicked that field goal
03:58yesterday um didn't know that they got they didn't get the ball they were getting the ball wasn't
04:04it wasn't aware getting the ball after a half time i mean i i does he does he have a
04:10long one
04:10or is the seat getting a little warm no i think it's getting warm i mean the the jet fans
04:15had enough
04:16of aaron last year believe it or not after his first year uh they did change some of the the
04:22coaching
04:22staff uh they brought in geno as a competent quarterback they can't seem to score over 20 points
04:28they they moved the ball and geno's got great statistics he's only had one interception and that
04:33came yesterday at an inopportune time to say the least but yeah some of the stuff that aaron has
04:38said away from the field or yesterday on the field at halftime um just kind of makes you wonder
04:45you know how tuned in he is and and how much of a leader he is you know players can
04:51love the guy can
04:52actually appreciate the the former player in him much like i'm sure the patriots do mike rabel
04:57but when it comes down to managing games saying things publicly um mismanaging the clock a number
05:04of different times over his short career here uh the questions start happening and you know jet fans
05:11are not happy they haven't been happy for a long time uh they go down the same road at the
05:17as they
05:17always do and that is the same old jets so um i think that's where we are right now this
05:22is a
05:23a pivotal week for them i mean they've done some things well but their defense has fallen apart
05:30a lot in these games especially late in the games and the miscommunication on the hunter henry touchdown
05:36tells you all you need to know they were supposed to fix that and when a guy is that wide
05:41open inside
05:41the 10 yard line for an easy touchdown there is a major problem on defense and supposedly as he said
05:48before the season started that was his superpower calling defenses which he is doing this year and
05:55certainly that hasn't worked out very well for him boomer rabel wasn't thrilled with how the guys
06:00played despite the wind saying that they didn't build upon the two weeks prior how often in the nfl
06:05does a team look past a team that they may think is not as good to look towards a team
06:12that they feel
06:13like they need to put all their effort into like this week with the jets and then the bears you
06:17know
06:17according to any given sunday you know it's a week-to-week league we hear it so much from so
06:21many people that cover the league nothing surprises us anymore much like arizona beating the rams
06:26yesterday everybody had the rams penciled in because they made the trade for miles garrett as super bowl
06:31uh combatants and they still may be i still think they are a very good team but they're going to
06:36have
06:36to go on the road in the playoffs if they're going to make it back to the super bowl so
06:41i mean it is
06:42you know when you're a head coach you want the best every each and every week you want the best
06:47um effort you want to make sure you're smart that you don't make any stupid plays as a player you
06:52don't want to have any you know like spitting incidents like cj gardner johnson did yesterday
06:57get thrown out of the game couldn't happen to a nicer guy really yeah i'll tell you what i i
07:03might
07:04have i might cut him this morning honestly i might there's just too many issues and it's just not worth
07:09uh the headache that comes along with it it's it there's so many players that do so many stupid
07:15things during games and it just drives coaches crazy and they they very rarely will ever out
07:22anybody publicly that's for sure and they're always very careful in their criticism of those players
07:27but you know that's why courtney this league is so up and down is because the players are up and
07:32down i i just you know one week they look like uh world beaters and the next week they can't
07:37beat
07:37the arizona cardinals so none none of this should surprise any of us and by the way it is a
07:43war of
07:43attrition so i i still believe that the patriots and i've said this i think consistently on the show
07:49they are a playoff team they are 10 to 11 win team that's what i believe and this is going
07:55to be one
07:55of those games that i thought was going to be tough for them going into the game assuming that
08:00caleb williams was healthy and by virtue of his performance against atlanta yesterday i would think
08:06that this is going to be a very tough game for the patriots to win
08:10if you had to pick today and they were redoing the draft would you take caleb williams or drake may
08:16as your quarterback going wow that's a really good question i man i'll tell you i i i think um
08:25i think i would take drake may just because and the only reason i say that is not because i
08:29think
08:29they're both really good on the field and i think they can be really great players on the field i
08:34just
08:34feel like there's a little bit something different about caleb away from the game i don't know what
08:40it is i can't figure it out um he's a mercurial personality as well but man when he is on
08:46he is
08:47on he's explosive and you can see how the team reacts to him it's the same way the team reacts
08:52to
08:52drake when drake is playing the way he has played the last three weeks you know so they both move
08:57around
08:57they both get away from the pass rush so for me i i think i would lean you know it's
09:03a very slight
09:04lean towards drake question of the week for boomer esiason is brought to you by mcfarland energy
09:10boomer chargers are oh and six what is going on with justin herbert what's going on with mike
09:16mcdaniel what's what's going on with the outfit over there you know trying to watch this game yesterday
09:22between them and the chiefs they were awful um their offense is completely out of sync i i know
09:28that justin herbert cares i know that for a fact i know that he is getting the living snot beat
09:34out
09:34of him each and every weekend i can see that and he's got to react to that um the spanos
09:40family isn't
09:41normally very patient and coming off of uh 211 win seasons back to back and then having this season
09:48happen right now if jim doesn't get this thing turned around there will be i believe significant
09:54changes at the chargers it's hard to say what's going on i you know mike mcdaniel is another weird
09:59kind of you know coach we all know that i mean when it's working it's great and he's funny but
10:07now that
10:07they're oh and six and justin herbert looks lost i you know if i'm the jets what i do is
10:13i have three i
10:14have three first round picks next year i was gonna i'm not so sure and i'm not so sure you
10:18know if one
10:19of these young quarterbacks is the guy for me i'm not but maybe just maybe uh the chargers would want
10:25to trade justin herbert and start all over getting another quarterback next year in the draft so i i
10:32think i would i would explore as many opportunities i could for the jets to find a solid older and
10:39redeemable quarterback because i think that justin herbert would be redeemable if he's in the right
10:44situation do you think it happens in season this season though like people speculate about the
10:50vikings or somebody you know what that would be that would be shocker of all shocker very rarely
10:56is a number one quarterback that has the reputation of justin herbert traded mid-season i i could see
11:05kevin o'connell wanted wanting to get his hands on him um but i just i can't imagine man that
11:12would
11:12be it would be an unbelievable trade to whoever went and got him but then again you got to remember
11:18what who is the player right now like where is his head at you know does he want to play
11:23is the i mean
11:24he looks like he has just beaten into the ground so whoever is trading for him if it were during
11:30the
11:30season i think you're trading for damaged goods i think it has to be an off-season trade where you
11:36can work with the guy in the off-season and really get to know him and find out whether or
11:40not he can
11:41truly be the leader of your team how many number one picks do you think it would take to get
11:45herbert
11:46from the chargers two well the jet the jets have three so uh going into the 2027 draft as we
11:53sit here
11:53right now they have the higher pick i think between i want to say green bay and dallas and they
11:59also have
11:59it indianapolis's pick and they have their own pick i you know given the way that the young man
12:06has played uh this season and the struggles that they are having which are not all his fault by the
12:11way um i would i would think that it would take at least two first round picks and maybe a
12:17few other
12:18picks uh in future years but i you know it's it's he's almost like damaged goods right now and i
12:24i just
12:24think that would probably hold down what the trade uh value would be boomer you know it's
12:30interesting interesting because you talked about the jets and quarterback and we had a discussion
12:35last week about coaches and quarterbacks and you know even justin herbert what is the biggest thing
12:41like when you start to talk about the relationship with the quarterback and and is it more the coach
12:47is it more the quarterback is it trying to find the right quarterback and how do you know if you
12:52identify that guy because i just feel like the quarterback play in the nfl is not very good
12:58and is it always the coach's fault or is it sometimes that guy's just not that good i i think
13:04it's a little
13:04bit of everything that goes into it i think the most important personality trait for a quarterback is
13:09is the leadership in other words he's got to be able to step in that huddle and you stepped in
13:14the
13:14huddle with tom brady you stepped in the huddle i believe with drew bledsoe too didn't you not
13:17yes i did so right so you play with two high-end quarterbacks and you know what it's like to
13:24step
13:24in that huddle and believe in that guy behind center so first and foremost it's the confidence
13:29and the leadership component of the player himself the second thing to me happens over time and that
13:37is he comes up big in big spots you know a big first down on a fourth and 14th and
13:43a four in the
13:44fourth quarter against the buffalo bills on the road and then leads the team to a touchdown that's
13:50when everybody in the building knows that he is the unquestioned leader of the team the fans get
13:55behind him the players are behind him the ownership is behind him uh he's recognized through his
14:01contract status you know those are the things that you know for me anyway uh create what i would
14:07consider today's great nfl quarterback and there are probably about six or seven of those guys
14:12after that everybody you can might as well just throw them into a pile and you can just pick
14:17anybody else out because they're all about the same and they're inconsistent players too that just
14:21drive coaches crazy drive players crazy and the thing that drives me crazy more than anything is
14:26sometimes these teams play players well before they're ready to play so case in point cam ward and
14:33the tennessee titans i know he's a great athlete i know he can throw the ball but he is now
14:38in his
14:39second offense in two years and he keeps going backward and i just don't understand it's okay
14:44to bench a guy for four five six games let him sit like they did with carolina and bryce young
14:50and then maybe after a while as they're maturing they'll be ready to play and lead their team so
14:56you know there's a lot that goes into it but you know you could see the tennessee titan players and
15:01the coaching staff they don't believe in cam ward they just don't and it's because he's too young
15:07and immature to be an nfl quarterback of of stature that reflects the number one pick overall that he
15:13was all right boomer i won't ask you about cowboys packers because i know you were watching the return
15:19of the victoria's secret fashion show so that was great last night by the way excited about i mean a
15:26million dollar bra really i mean you can't beat it it's no you can't beat it i mean and i'll
15:32tell you
15:32what it did beat the packers and the uh and and the cowboys for me yes all right well we
15:38will talk
15:39to you we'll talk to you again next week all right guys well yeah good short week for you guys
15:43so you
15:44know we'll see what happens thursday night thanks boomer say guys
15:47guys
15:47you
