00:00Hey Boomer. Hey, good morning, man. It sounds like everybody's a little happier this morning.
00:04Victory Monday. Mike Rabel said the most important thing he took from the win yesterday
00:10is that this team are not frontrunners. No, they're not frontrunners, but thinking about
00:18how long it's been since they won in Miami and how long it's taken for them to score 30 or more
00:23points in a game, they've gotten the monkey off of their back. And I actually thought,
00:27you know, thinking about this game yesterday, I played in week two down in Miami one year when
00:32I was with the Jets and it had to be like 95 to 100 degrees. And it's just, to me, at least in the
00:37fourth quarter, it looked like both teams were gassed, but New England must be in better shape
00:42because you win a game like that just simply because you are in better shape. So at least
00:47that's something that Mike could take out of the game as well. Does that, does the heat excuse any
00:53of the penalties, like maybe the offensive line penalties? Cause those guys, I can relate to
00:58the big guys. Yeah. Okay. Um, so, so can Jermaine too, by the way, I'm sure he was, uh, you know,
01:05slamming some chicken wings yesterday. Drinking a few beers. I'm sure. I mean, we all, as we get
01:15older, we all get in a little bit less of a shape that we need. You know, I will say that there were
01:21penalties all over the league yesterday. I mean, insane penalties, insane amount of penalties
01:25yesterday. I think there were a number of bad calls all across the league as well.
01:29I don't want to blame the heat on too much, but yeah, I mean, it does get to be pretty dicey
01:34down there and Miami uses that as a major advantage. Cause obviously living in it, you know, you get
01:39used to it a little bit easier, but I can't, you know, Miami's in, they, they have problems.
01:45They have major problems. You know, they, they've allowed points on their first 10 drives this
01:50season. That that's, that's insane. Their defense stinks, I guess. So, uh, you got teams slicing and
01:56dicing them, Daniel Jones and Drake may, but nonetheless, you got to play who's on your,
02:00on your, uh, on your schedule. And I thought Drake was a little bit more compact this week.
02:05He only attempted 23 passes, which is probably the way it's going to be if they can keep it this way
02:10and try to run the ball effectively. But you know, this was crazy yesterday, you know, punt return for
02:15a touchdown, kickoff return for a touchdown. That's the only second time that's happened
02:20in the NFL where one happened and then the other happened right after it. So it was an amazing game
02:26and it was a great win. When it comes to Drake may boomer and, and, and using his legs, there was a
02:31difference between week one and week two. Do you think that is Josh McDaniel saying to him, Hey, we can
02:36open it up a little bit when it comes to you using your best quality, or do you think it was Drake may
02:40becoming more comfortable, um, against the dolphins? I think it's probably a little bit of both, but I also
02:45would say, I really don't want Drake may doing that that much. I want him standing in the pocket
02:49and reading the defense. And, you know, he threw that beautiful pass down the right sideline to
02:54Ramondre Stevenson. And if you watch him in the pocket, that that's how you're supposed to operate.
02:59And when you have arms and legs and everything around you and you step up and you still have
03:03the presence of mind of putting the ball right on the, on the, on the money and Stevenson makes a
03:08great catch. It's a really perfect pass. I mean, that that's the silver lining part of it.
03:13That's the thing that I see that I want to see more of. And I want to see, you know,
03:17him be more consistent. And yesterday was, was his best game. They won, they were on the road,
03:23they were doing it down in Miami. Um, so hopefully, you know, he gains more and more confidence. Like
03:28I thought when you go back and you look at the Vegas game, there were times where he was just
03:32like going so fast and maybe he'll calm down a little bit and everything will slow down for him.
03:39He's still only in his second year and he's got a, he's got a real offensive coordinator. They're
03:44talking about real things that are happening on the field in real time. So all of that is great
03:49for him. And hopefully he can build on this now. You brought up the back big, uh, back-to-back
03:54returns for TDs last season or sorry, last week, 75% were returned as opposed to last season, 35%.
04:04Yep. You'll, you'll like that rule change. I do. Cause I like to play, you know, I don't like,
04:09I don't like the way it is. I like the old way, but you know, you have to adjust. You have to try to
04:14limit as many injuries as you can, which is one of the reasons why the NFL has done this. And the NFL
04:19also wanted to increase kickoff returns. And you hope that your kickoff returner, you know,
04:25understands the rules as opposed to what happened in Pittsburgh yesterday, where Caleb Johnson,
04:30the rookie, just, I don't, he, he didn't know the rules or maybe he thought the ball was going
04:35to go out of the end zone. I didn't see any of his comments after the game, but you know,
04:39that it's on the player for sure, but it's on the special teams coach. And Jermaine will tell you this,
04:44you know, these coaches go over time and again, the rules, and especially how these rules have
04:50changed in this regard, uh, that we finally had our first mistake, but that will be a teaching
04:55point for every single special teams coach this morning in the NFL, letting everybody know guys,
05:01this is the rules. The ball hits in this part of the, uh, in this part of the, uh, the field,
05:06you got to play it and you got to run it back and you can't just assume that it's going to go through
05:10the end zone. Boom. A great win for the Pats, but it looks like Miami imploded in front of us,
05:16having penalties back to back. How long before Mike McDaniel gets fired? Yeah, well, he's got a very,
05:24uh, Oh, I say, I'm sure. Um, he's got, he's got an owner that's got some pride. He's got an ego.
05:32Um, I don't necessarily know how much he's, how much more he's going to want to put up with this.
05:36It's kind of a weird, you know, that they've, they've kept their GM through all of this, by the
05:40way, and they haven't gone to the playoffs or maybe once under him. And for some reason,
05:45he's been there for, it seems like ever. I mean, maybe since 2010. So I, I don't know what the heck
05:51Steven Ross is going to do, but I gotta, I gotta believe that he is really frustrated.
05:56He wants wins, but you know, when your team has given up points on every single driver,
06:01the first 10 drives of the season, I mean, that doesn't go over well in the building.
06:05So I think most of us realize that Mike McDaniel is on the short list of guys to be relieved of
06:12his job. I never really liked talking about this because I know how hard this job is,
06:15is, but given all the things that have gone on around them over the last couple of weeks,
06:21I would think it's getting pretty dicey down there.
06:24Buber, with the Chiefs falling to 0-2, I thought for sure that obviously Mahomes is going after
06:32Tom Brady. That's his goal to be the GOAT. That the Chiefs would see how the Patriots concluded
06:36things with Tom Brady and do more to make sure they maximize the window of Patrick Mahomes.
06:42That offense looks awful. I know they've had injuries at the receiver position, but
06:47whether it's the offensive line, they just look nothing like the Chiefs that we've gotten used to.
06:51They may be exhausted. You know, all this winning, um, you know, it happens. I'm not,
06:55I'm not, I'm not trying to be funny. I'm, I'm being real. I mean, and they are the hunted.
06:59Everybody goes after them. And, you know, Travis Kelsey had a case of the dropsies yesterday
07:04that basically cost their team. Um, there's a lot swirling around that team. I still believe in
07:09Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, the combination, um, they, they've got to get some guys back.
07:14They got to get guys healthy. Um, they're not creating any big plays whatsoever. And that's
07:19two weeks in a row now. Uh, you know, the interesting thing from the Patriots perspective,
07:23when you think about this is that, you know, now the Bengals have lost Joe Burrow. It looks
07:27like for an extended period of time, I don't know if he's going to have surgery or not, or he's
07:31going to try to fight through this injury, but if he has surgery, he's going to be out for three
07:34months. And with, uh, with, uh, Kansas city getting off to the start that they're, they've
07:39gotten off to now. Um, you know, they're going to be fighting for a wild card most likely in that
07:43division if everything stays the way it is. But yeah, I would, I would certainly be worried
07:48about that team offensively defensively. They're good. They're going to be solid and they play the
07:52giants this week. So maybe they'll get on, you know, get on the, uh, the winning side of things.
07:57I caught some of your extraordinary, uh, national show on the radio station Sunday. Excellent show,
08:02by the way, boomer. Uh, and you brought up that my homes has yet to lose three in a row in his NFL
08:10career. And now he has, which is amazing. Uh, I, I never thought that they would lose this game.
08:16And of course, Travis Kelsey helped, helped that out there towards the end. But, um, yeah, it's an
08:21amazing statistic, you know, and there's a lot, there's a lot to love about, you know, Patrick and
08:25everything that he's accomplished, the way he carries himself. I just, I just think that he is a,
08:30he's a tremendous player, but I think they think that he can do it all on offense, which is
08:35ridiculous. I mean, you gotta have players. And even though they won games and got to Super Bowls
08:40without Tyree kill, when he had Tyree kill on the field with him, you know, that was the big
08:45difference maker. That was the one that stretched the defense. That's the one that put the fear
08:49of God in opposing defensive coordinators. And if you don't have a guy like that on your team,
08:53which he doesn't, uh, you know, he's going to suffer like every other quarterback that's ever
08:57played the game. Boomer, a question from a non-football player here, because you bring
09:01up Joe Burrow, turf toe, I'm seeing grade three, but when I see toe injury, and then I see out for
09:07the season, that doesn't compute for me as a former quarterback. How difficult is it to play through
09:15something like that? You bring up surgery, you play or, or playing through, what does that injury
09:20look like and feel like for a quarterback? All right. So he's right handed. That's his
09:24left foot. So, uh, you know, to me, you know, that's, that's his front foot and he's going to
09:30have to, you know, lean forward and try to throw on it. So it's not very easy. I don't necessarily
09:36know that they would give him a cortisone shot or numb it up or shoot it up as they say,
09:40you know, off the field. Uh, but it is a very difficult injury to deal with. The only thing I can
09:45say is that the end of my career in 1997, I played five games with double plantar fasciitis in both
09:52feet. Um, there really was no remedy for it. Uh, they could give me a little bit of quarter zone,
09:58uh, before the game, but by the third quarter, both feet were killing me. And it's one of the
10:02reasons why I ended up retiring two years early, but, um, anything that has to do with your feet and
10:08you are a quarter, any, any athlete for that matter, it's, it's very delicate and it does have a
10:13profound effect. And the other thing too, is you got to remember the most important
10:17thing for an athlete on the, on the field or on the court or on the ice is can they protect
10:22themselves naturally without thinking about an injury that they may be playing with.
10:28And I think that would be the big thing that I would ask Joe Burrow. Is there any way that
10:32he could go out on the field and play the game naturally and not worry about that foot and be
10:37able to protect himself. And the way he was injured yesterday, somebody fell on him.
10:41That thing got driven into the ground and I could imagine he probably heard it pop.
10:46And if that's the case, then I would think that surgery is going to be in the offing.
10:50With Hugh Boomer, wasn't that originally misdiagnosed as the gout?
10:55That's what I have now.
10:58All right. Um, let's get this week's Drake take from Boomer Esiason, which is presented by
11:03your new England Chevy dealers together. Let's drive. Drake was pressured on, uh, 19.4% of drop
11:11backs yesterday. First time in his NFL career, it was under 20%. How big of a factor was that in,
11:18in, uh, the way he looked at his success yesterday?
11:20Well, you complete 82% of your passes. It's a huge factor. And like, again,
11:25it really comes down to his confidence. Now you guys were asking me about false start penalties
11:29and things of that nature. You know, that really goes back to the quarterback. It goes back to his
11:33cadence. It goes back to the offensive line, feeling comfortable with the quarterback,
11:38knowing what he's seeing. You know what I would suggest that I don't know if he does this,
11:42but what he should do, he should take time and maybe he does. And maybe you guys can ask him this.
11:47He should take time somewhere during the week and sit in with the offensive lineman,
11:53watch the end zone film and go over all the checks, go over all the things that he might go through,
11:58especially when they go on the road and they play in a very noisy stadium. Because the one thing you
12:04want is you want your offensive lineman to feel really confident about the guy behind them and
12:09where he's going to be and what he sees is what they see. So I would suggest if he, if he doesn't
12:15do that, that he should, maybe he does. And maybe that will help him get even more confident and less
12:20penalties. Cause that's something that everybody would be driving for.
12:23Well, when you look at this Patriots team, I think one thing we, as fans expected coming into it,
12:29that the defense was going to be better. If you look at this defense, they lead the league
12:34and giving up explosive plays. What is it? Just the fact that they don't have Christian
12:40Gonzalez. I know they get after the quarterback, they lead the league in sacks, but what can they
12:44do to help them eliminate those explosive plays? Well, they need Christian Gonzalez back. You know,
12:49you're talking about a shutdown corner and that guy takes away half the field and the opposing
12:54team's best player. And we have seen both Geno Smith and Tua put the ball down the field and
13:00creates a big place. You know, if Devin A. Chan doesn't step out of bounds, I don't know,
13:04maybe we're talking about a different set of circumstances here. Yeah. From yesterday's game,
13:07that's how close this game was. And you're talking about the difference between one turnover. And when
13:13these games are close like this and when they're one score games, that's ultimately what it comes down
13:17to. And that, that interception was huge. I don't, I don't know what Tua Tungabailoa was looking at,
13:23but once you get one of those, you know, that's the things, that's the type of big plays you want
13:27on defense. So maybe when Christian gets back, uh, they'll be okay. But the fact that they're
13:32leading the league in sacks is pretty good. Jermaine, that's, that's something that every
13:36team would love to be able to say, because, you know, when you get to that fourth quarter and you
13:40get the big sack, like they did yesterday, that, that, that's what you want from your defensive
13:45lineman. So I'm sure as this defense grows and Mike Brable still is tweaking it and finding out
13:51different players, who's the better player, what position should they be playing? I mean,
13:55all that stuff is being evaluated as we speak by the coaching staff. So that's a good thing to have.
14:00But unfortunately they're giving up too many plays down the field, which they realize that they have
14:05to do something about, but certainly hopefully when Christian comes back, he'll be able to be a big
14:10part of that. Question of the week for Boomer Esiason is brought to you by McFarland Energy,
14:15the region's most dependable provider of home heating, oil delivery, and expert HVAC services
14:22at McFarlandEnergy.com. Lions put up 52 on the Bears. I want to know what you made of Caleb Williams
14:29post-game saying that it wasn't surprising to him because it's a new coach, new offense, and new players.
14:38I, I, I have to see it. This is the first I'm hearing of it. I have to see how he delivers that. I
14:43mean, the, the biggest problem with Caleb right now is I don't believe that his team believes in
14:48him. And that's a real problem for quarterbacks. Like I could say that the Patriot players believe
14:55in, you know, Drake may, I do believe that the Viking players, even though they didn't win last
14:59night, still believe in JJ McCarthy. Seattle certainly believes in Sam Donald after yesterday's
15:04performance. That's the biggest thing is that the quarterback is got to get his guys on his side.
15:10And there can't be any question as to who the leader is and how they react and what they say
15:15after games. And I remember being very, very sensitive, especially when I was on a losing team
15:20to say the right thing post-game, because I knew that everybody's family was watching. Every player's
15:26watching every player's buddy or agent is watching. And if you don't say the right things, uh, then it
15:32comes back to haunt you. So to me, it doesn't sound like, uh, Caleb Williams understands that aspect
15:39of it yet. And it's part of maturing and growing up and understanding what your responsibilities are.
15:44So depending on how he said that Greg, uh, would lead me to be concerned about what kind of leader
15:51he is and, and how the team feels about him, um, personally.
15:57Boomer, thanks. As always, we will talk to you again next week.
15:59All right, guys, have a great week. Enjoy the win.
