Newcastle United have confirmed they have signed Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m in a move completed in the final minutes of the summer transfer window.
00:00So, after one of the busiest transfer deadline days in recent times, Newcastle United have finally completed the signing of Brentford's Johan Wisser.
00:08Now, it's a deal they've chased for a number of weeks of the window, really.
00:12Lots of other options for Newcastle, but Wisser has always seemed like the one that they really wanted.
00:16Now, Brentford didn't want to sell the striker.
00:19Of course, they lost Christian Nogar to Arsenal, Brian Mbemo to Manchester United,
00:24and of course, their manager, Thomas Frank, to Tottenham Hotspur.
00:27So, it was a season of upheaval, or summer of upheaval, at the JTEC community stadium.
00:32And Wisser was the one that they probably wanted to keep hold of.
00:35And even up till the end of last week, Keith Andrews was very confident of keeping hold of Wisser.
00:41But of course, we all know that Alexander Azak's moved to Liverpool, which was agreed on the late hours of Sunday night into Monday morning,
00:51into deadline day, you know, that favour £130 million was agreed then.
00:53That sped things along for Wisser, and eventually Newcastle United agreed a fee of £55 million for the striker.
01:00Now, is it an overpay for Johan Wisser? Very probably.
01:03You know, they went initially in for £25 million, up that £35 million,
01:06and now paying £20 million more than that, up to a total of £55 million.
01:10So, it's a lot of money for someone who will turn 29 before he'll kick a ball for his new club.
01:15But, ultimately, they were forced into a situation by the actions of Azak, and him trying to force a move away from the club.
01:23And, ultimately, £55 million is a lot of money, but Wisser did score 19 goals last season.
01:28You know, he scored the same amount of non-penalty goals as Azak.
01:31And, you know, there's very few players in world football that guarantee 19, sorry, Premier League goals in a season.
01:38So, Newcastle have got one on their books.
01:40They, of course, signed Nick Voltomada at the end of last week.
01:43Now, his ceiling is a lot higher than Wisser, of course, and everyone hopes that his ceiling is a lot higher than Azak,
01:48the man he comes in to replace.
01:50But he will take time to adapt to Eddie Howe in the Premier League.
01:53So, you can't put too much pressure on his shoulders just yet.
01:56That would have happened had Newcastle not signed Wisser today.
01:58But, now, they can go into the season with that first game against Wolves after the international break,
02:04knowing that they've got a Premier League-proven striker in their ranks
02:06and someone that they can trust, you know, to get on the end of the chances they've created.
02:10Because they were creating chances, certainly in the first two games.
02:13Let's go to Ellen Road on Saturday.
02:15That was a bit of a disappointment.
02:16But there are, you know, chances to be created and hopefully turned into goals by a recognised striker.
02:22They've now got that deal over the line.
02:24They've got a recognised striker in their squad.
02:26They've got Voltomada, who has said hi, ceiling.
02:29Hopefully, they can develop him over the next few months and he can become a regular starter.
02:33But, I think, for me, Newcastle have probably ended in the window.
02:37Certainly, ending the window as a squad, stronger than they started it.
02:40Which, you know, it's not one that we've been able to see over the last couple of transfer windows
02:44and Newcastle have ended stronger than they started it.
02:46But, they are ending as stronger as they started it.
02:48And, in the striking department, yes, they lost Callum Wilson and Izak.
02:51But, they've added Johan Wisser and Voltomada.
02:53And, I think that is a stronger two than Wilson and Izak.
02:58So, yeah, forget all the noise of the whole window because Izak's situation, of course,
03:04overshadowed a lot of the good things Newcastle United have done this summer.
03:08And, they've ended it on a high, you know, 10 o'clock on deadline day was when they announced
03:12the signing of Wisser.
03:13Now, that did, obviously, that was three hours after the deadline deal sheets and all that
03:17kind of thing means Newcastle got an extra deadline to do that.
03:20And, Sky Sports have been reporting that the Wisser deal only got done 30 seconds before the deadline.
03:25So, yeah, it's been a busy day for Newcastle United on deadline day.
03:29Normally, it's quiet, but, you know, me as journalists, as journalists, as fans,
03:33you know, we are happy to see Newcastle United being active on deadline day.
03:36And, ultimately, they've got what they wanted.
03:38They couldn't not sign a striker this summer.
03:40They signed one in Voltomada.
03:42They then couldn't not sign another one when they got rid of Izak.
03:44And, they've done that as well.
03:45So, ultimately, Newcastle end the window with a better squad.
03:49And, you know, what they would have done going into the last few days.
03:53Is Estelerios improving?
03:54Yes, but most teams in the Premier League, most clubs in the Premier League bar,
03:57maybe one at the very top, will have areas they need to improve on.
04:02And, you know, only time will tell what happens with Izak,
04:05whether that was the right decision to sell him then,
04:07whether Wisser and Voltomada can get their goals.
04:09But, right now, Newcastle United ending the summer window with a new striker,
04:13new on Wisser, four-year contract at Newcastle, that's in James Park.
04:17And, yeah, it's a good end to a solid window with, of course, the whole spectre of Izak
04:23surrounding everything that's happened.
04:24And, I'm sure that I'll be doing a video in a couple of days' time dissecting that whole saga
04:28and what's going on from the summer right now.
04:30But, forgetting, he's not part of Newcastle United anymore.
04:33Well, the main thing to take away from this video is that Wisser is part of Newcastle United,
04:37his signing's done, and he could make his debut, along with Voltomada,
04:42against Wolves on Saturday, 30th of September.
04:44And then, of course, that game takes place just five days before Barcelona come to see in James' Park.
