Lloyd Kelly transfer confirmed as Newcastle United's transfer window assessed

Joe Buck assesses Newcastle United's January transfer window following the confirmation of Lloyd Kelly's move to Juventus.

00:00So, as expected, Newcastle United have completed one deadline day transfer, that is of course

00:05Lloyd Kelly's move to Juventus. Now, Newcastle United went into the window not expecting

00:11to do any business anyhow, repeated that over numerous days and numerous press conferences

00:15and ultimately it's ended up that they have got rid of, as I said, Kelly for £20 million

00:19and of course Miguel Almaron for £10 million in the two big deals of the window. No incomings

00:24as expected. It's a mixed window for Newcastle, I think a lot of people would have wanted

00:29them to bring someone in, but of course PSR means they simply can't and the club would

00:33rather wait until summer where they can get better deals and have a little bit more wiggle

00:37room in terms of PSR when they can hopefully strengthen Eddie Howe's squad. It is a risk

00:41and that means Howe's got to go with the team he's got now, the 19-20 bodies he's got, they've

00:46got to try and get him that silverware, obviously the Carroll Cup and then maybe the FA Cup

00:51and of course the European qualification which will be the ultimate aim. So, it's a gamble

00:55from the club and whether it pays off, we'll only know in May. But right now, as I said,

00:59Roy Kelly and Miguel Almaron, the two players departed. Of course, a couple of development

01:02loans and whatnot, but they're the two main stories of the January window. It'll be interesting

01:07to see how it works. You look at Aston Villa, who have signed Marcus Rashford, look at a

01:11bit of Marco Asensio and stuff. So, they're really going for it this month. Of course,

01:15they still have John Duran, which helps their financial position, but they're a big rival

01:19in Newcastle. They've gone for it in the Marquette Manchester City, the biggest spenders in the

01:23Premier League. They've gone for it as well this month. So, Newcastle's rivals in and

01:28around the table are going for it. So, it'll be interesting to see how Newcastle can react

01:32to that. Now, the Premier League takes a back seat with Arsenal and Birmingham City to come

01:38in the next couple of days. That match against Arsenal on Wednesday is massive and obviously

01:41Birmingham, we're getting the chance for them to progress in the FA Cup and a competition

01:45they'll hope to win. So, yeah, it's going to be an interesting couple of weeks with

01:48a couple of really tough Premier League matches to come and then maybe in a month's time we'll

01:52start seeing whether that was a good decision not to strengthen in January. But as I said,

01:56ultimately, you don't know until May. But right now, the two major transfer moves and

02:00the only ones of the window and the one completed on deadline day was, of course, Miguel Almar

02:05on Atalanta, which completed last week, and Lloyd Kelly's move to Juventus on an initial

02:09loan deal. But that'll be made permanent in summer with Newcastle receiving about £20

02:12million in all.
