Yorkshire councils plan to introduce daily roadworks charge

Three West Yorkshire councils, including Leeds City, plan to charge companies up to £2,500 a day in a bid to reduce roadworks disruption on major routes.

00:37Wakefield Council's Service Manager for Highways and Transportation, Martin Barnes, said the

00:42charges were expected to apply on around 10 per cent of the district's road networks,

00:47in line with Department for Transport guidelines.

00:50Mr Barnes said councils were unable to stop utility companies which provide essential

00:55public services such as water, electricity, gas and telecommunications from carrying out

01:00work that could lead to temporary road closures, but said councils can manage and advise on work

01:06across the network.

01:07He said lane rental is almost to try and force utilities to be a little bit more efficient,

01:13with the proposal set to be put out to consultation, adding that similar schemes introduced by authorities

01:18in the south of England have proved successful. Wakefield Council is responsible for maintaining

01:231,454 kilometres of roads and 1,944 kilometres of footways.

01:30A Wakefield board would have to be created under rules to decide how any extra income would be spent,

01:36but it is expected that 50 per cent would be used on road maintenance.

01:40At the moment the initiative could be introduced in the next financial year.
