Have you ever been irritated by how long some roadworks seem to take?
00:06
Wakefield Council are planning to join forces with Leeds City Council and Kirklees Council
00:11
to introduce a lane rental scheme for roadworks on the busiest roads at peak times by introducing

a charge to contractors of up to £2,500 per day.

public services such as water, electricity, gas and telecommunications from carrying out

work that could lead to temporary road closures, but said councils can manage and advise on work

across the network.

with the proposal set to be put out to consultation, adding that similar schemes introduced by authorities

in the south of England have proved successful. Wakefield Council is responsible for maintaining

1,454 kilometres of roads and 1,944 kilometres of footways.
01:30
A Wakefield board would have to be created under rules to decide how any extra income would be spent,
01:36
but it is expected that 50 per cent would be used on road maintenance.

At the moment the initiative could be introduced in the next financial year.
