00:30More than 600 people have been killed after an earthquake rocked eastern Afghanistan, Taliban officials have said.
00:38The six-point magnitude quake struck in the evening on Sunday near the city of Jalalabad, triggering strong aftershocks.
00:45At least 1,500 people have been injured, officials said as they warned the numbers could rise.
00:54Rescuers searched for survivors in the hardest-hit mountainous Kunar province.
01:00In nearby Nangaha, footage showed people searching for their loved ones through rubble with their hands.
01:07It's not the first time a deadly earthquake has struck Afghanistan.
01:10In 2023, a magnitude 6.3 quake alongside intense aftershocks killed around 1,600 people.
01:18Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the West for his country's war on Ukraine and Europe in particular for what he said were provocations forcing Moscow to respond.
01:32The Russian leader made the remarks as he participated in a major summit in China, taking place in the northern port city of Tianjin.
01:39Putin says the war was not triggered by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but rather as a result of a coup in Ukraine, provoked and supported by the West.
01:50He also labeled the West's constant attempts to enlist Ukraine into NATO as the second biggest reason for the ongoing war, well into its fourth year.
01:58Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping criticized the bullying behavior of other countries and urged members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to resist what he called the Cold War mentality.
02:11He also praised the growth of the group both in size and influence, but stressed the need for even more cooperation to address global crises and promote further development.
02:20The Shanghai Coordination Organization was established 24 years ago with an aim of challenging Western-led multilateral blocs.
02:29The group, which has 10 permanent members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe and Africa, accounts for nearly half the world's population and around a quarter of the global economy.
02:41European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk arrived at the Polish-Belarusian border on Sunday, where they discussed defense and security.
02:59Von der Leyen reassured Tusk of Europe's full solidarity with Poland as a frontline state.
03:04We have to keep the sense of urgency because we know that Putin has not changed and will not change.
03:11He is a predator, can only be kept in check through strong deterrence.
03:17And therefore we have to be coordinated, precise and fast with the surge of our defense posture in the European Union and specifically in the frontline state.
03:30The European Commission chief added that as the largest defense spender in Europe, Poland will be the biggest beneficiary from the SAFE loan program.
03:40Von der Leyen's visit to Poland is part of a broader tour of EU countries bordering Russia and Belarus, which also includes Estonia, Lithuania, Finland and Latvia.
03:49The tour also includes visits to Bulgaria and Romania.
03:53Russia launched 142 attack and decoy drones at Ukraine overnight in what was Moscow's third large-scale attack this week.
04:07Ukraine's Air Force said explosions were reported in Odessa, Kherson, Zaporizhia and Dnepro.
04:14In Odessa, at least one person was injured and tens of thousands of people were left without electricity due to damage to energy infrastructure.
04:22And at least two people were killed and several others were injured in the southern city of Kherson, local media reported.
04:31Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that the large-scale attacks are a way through which Russia is demonstrating that without pressure, there will be no end to the war.
04:42Meanwhile, the Ukrainian leader reported, quote, heavy losses to Russian forces in Ukraine's Pokrovsk,
04:48where he says Moscow's army is concentrating its greatest efforts.
04:55Lithuania has completed the installation of the so-called Dragon's Teeth on its border with Russia's Kaliningrad esclave.
05:03The Lithuanian Defense Ministry on Saturday described this as the latest step in a series of defense measures taken by the Baltic country to deter Russian aggression.
05:14The Baltic state is trying to limit the possibility of using unused roads to reduce the risk of a land invasion.
05:22Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are members of NATO and border Russia.
05:28A maritime convoy of ships departed from Barcelona to the Gaza Strip on Sunday with humanitarian aid, activists and celebrities on board seeking to break the Israeli blockade of the Palestinian enclave.
05:44It comes after food experts warned earlier this month that half a million people across Gaza were facing catastrophic levels of hunger.
05:54The global Sumit flotilla said they are carrying much-needed food, water and medicine and demanded safe passage in a statement.
06:03But it is unclear if Israel will allow their delivery of aid.
06:07The Spanish convoy is expected to be joined on the 4th of September in the middle of the Mediterranean by other expedition aid ships heading to Gaza.
06:17Among the crew is the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.
06:20It is now the first time that Thunberg has attempted to reach Gaza waters this year.
06:26She and 11 other activists aboard a ship called the Matlin were stopped by the Israeli military and deported in June.
06:37Soaring prices and empty beaches. That's been the main talk this summer.
06:42But on a mid-week August afternoon, this beach club along the Lazio coastline doesn't look empty.
06:48Figures mainly from industry groups show overall visitor numbers are down by as much as 30% compared to last summer.
06:56But how true is that picture?
06:59Antonello Chiapini, who runs this beach club in Ladispoli, confirms the drop, but says it's not new.
07:04Since the pandemic, he explains the way people take holidays has changed, especially when it comes to local tourism.
07:11We have noticed in the post-COVID a trend, a change, in the sense that here the tourism has moved a lot to the end of the weekend compared to the infrasettimanal.
07:27This is the terminated by many factors.
07:29One, first of all, is the fact that we don't take in the affittance anymore for a month or two months, as happened in the past,
07:38the apartment in Ladispoli, also because the price of the affittances, more than a price of the abonnements,
07:47there was an increase in the cost of the affittances.
07:50What we've increased at the end of the week is not able to compensate the losses during the week.
07:56Other associations, like Federbalneari, seem to agree, though they argue it's not really about prices.
08:04The 20% rise in tariffs since 2012, they say, is modest when compared with post-COVID inflation.
08:10Regular customers say they'll keep coming as long as tariffs stay the same.
08:32Tariffs are not regulated and private concessions granted without time limits are blamed.
09:02by some associations for keeping costs high, an issue still at the center of a dispute between Rome and Brussels.
09:09Giorgio Orlandi for Euronews in Rome.
09:1426 islands, 29 port stops and approximately 1,000 nautical miles.
09:21Two low-to-zero-emission sailing vessels traveled the Aegean and Ionian seas as part of the Seal Greece campaign.
09:28The aim is to protect the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus Monachus, one of the most vulnerable marine mammals in the world.
09:36On the island of Tinos, we met the mission covering the Aegean Sea.
09:40The first thing I do in every island is to set up a cube of about a meter in order for people to scan the cube or code that is appearing on it.
09:51And once they do, an augmented reality experience is popping up on people's phone with a virtual seal, giving them playful tips about how to act if they meet some actual Mediterranean monk seals.
10:05In addition to locals and tourists walking along the waterfront, marine biologist Suzanne Rugby and captain Lucas Kourczoiannis are informing the island's shopkeepers.
10:15The goal is to get the message across to the local community, which largely leaves off tourism.
10:21The global population of the Mediterranean monk seal does not exceed 1,000 individuals.
10:47Almost half of them are found in Greek waters.
10:51I didn't know much about it, and I thought it was very interesting because I saw many ships in Greece and many ships on the islands of Greece.
11:00And you don't even know the mountains of Greece and the problems that the mountains have with the ships that are so many on the islands.
11:07On many islands, dozens of tourist boats enter the caves that function as a refuge for the mammals.
11:14Even greater problems are caused by what are known as party boats, with very loud music, alcohol and diving into the sea.
11:22The tourism activity, i.e. the dangers of our tourists, can even be afraid of the islands of the islands of Greece.
11:29One of the goals of the extraterrestrial seal in Greece is to understand that the protection of the Mediterranean fog is not only responsible for the government or some organizations,
11:39but also for the summer we travel in the Ionio and Aegean Mountains.
