03:41The EU's Health Security Committee has unveiled new recommendations aimed at strengthening Europe's preparedness
03:49and resilience against extreme heat and other cross-border health threats.
03:55It comes as climate change drives more frequent and intense heat waves,
04:00which have left some 16,000 people dead this summer,
04:03according to data from the European Mortality Monitor.
04:07According to the committee's draft opinions, adopted on Thursday,
04:11public health systems in many EU countries remain, quote,
04:15insufficiently prepared to cope with prolonged periods of extreme heat.
04:20It argues that tackling the growing threat requires, quote,
04:24a cross-sectoral, all-of-government and all-of-society approach,
04:29combining short, medium and long-term measures.
04:33The recommendations come as the European Commission prepares
04:36a European Integrated Framework for Climate Resilience due before the end of 2026.
