00:00If I'm destined to get hit by a car here, will I still get hit by that car no matter
00:04what I do?
00:06What if I take a step back?
00:10Everything that will happen in our lives is written in our destiny with all its details.
00:15So what is our role in this world then?
00:18Are we just puppets playing what has been already written?
00:22For instance, were you destined to watch this video right now?
00:24Or let's make the question even more difficult.
00:27If someone is already destined to go to hell, then what is the fault of that person?
00:32The belief in destiny is a concept that has been debated for many many centuries, and is
00:36perhaps one of the most difficult topics to understand.
00:40There have been many misunderstandings and disagreements on this issue, and as a result, serious disputes
00:45have come up.
00:46There have been people who completely denied destiny, and on the contrary, there were others
00:51who accepted it, but completely denied free will.
00:53In other words, both sides went to extremes and couldn't find the middle ground.
00:58But then, how should the middle ground be?
01:01What is the correct way of believing in destiny?
01:03Do you have the correct belief?
01:05Or are there some flaws that you haven't realized?
01:07If you want to find out the answers to all these questions, make sure to watch this video
01:10carefully until the end.
01:12Let's begin.
01:17Belief in destiny is to believe that, from the very beginning, Allah knows everything
01:21that will happen in the universe, and that he has written all of them in full detail even
01:25before creating them.
01:27But how can something be completely known and written before it even happens?
01:31It's normal for us to find this difficult to understand, because it has to do with timelessness.
01:36While we are living inside time, it's really hard to grasp the state of being timeless, existing outside of time.
01:42Now let's first define the concept of time in the most basic sense.
01:46The concept we call time is the creation of things from Allah's infinite knowledge, their
01:50emergence into the realm of existence, and then their withdrawal from the stage through
01:55death and annihilation.
01:57In other words, time is the sequence in which things are created.
02:00Allah created a different day yesterday, a different one today, and will create a different
02:05day tomorrow.
02:06It's as if time is like a rope, and all events that happen are lined up one after the other
02:10on that rope.
02:11But this sequence only applies to us.
02:14For example, let's say you have a 10-line poem in your memory.
02:17All these 10 lines exist in your memory at the same time.
02:21But when you start writing it on paper, you write it in a certain order.
02:24You start with the first line, then the second line, then the third line, and so on.
02:28While on paper, you write these lines one after the other in a certain order, in your memory,
02:33all these lines are present at the same time.
02:36Just like this, everything that has happened or will happen in the realm of existence is
02:41already present in Allah's knowledge simultaneously.
02:44But when he brings them into existence, he creates them in a certain sequence, and we call
02:48that sequence time.
02:50Let's make it even simpler.
02:51Allah is the creator of the concept of time, right?
02:54And as a rule, everything that he created in the universe is bound by time.
02:58So can this rule also be applied to Allah when he is the one who created that?
03:02Of course not.
03:03Since Allah is the creator of time, then naturally, he shouldn't be bound by it.
03:08And so if Allah is not limited by time, wouldn't it be normal for him to know the future?
03:13Now we are going to demonstrate this point with a very powerful example.
03:16I want you to pay really close attention to it.
03:18Let's imagine a camera in our hands.
03:20Then we draw a line on the table.
03:21The left side represents the past.
03:23The middle represents the present, and the right is the future.
03:26If I hold the camera in the center and close to the table, the camera only captures and
03:30sees the present.
03:31The higher we raise the camera, the more it captures the past and the future.
03:35And when we raise the camera to the very top, it encompasses and captures all these times
03:39at once.
03:40All of them can be seen simultaneously in that camera.
03:42Just like this, we are living on a certain timeline in the universe.
03:45We have a life that we live as the past, present, and future.
03:48Similar to the camera capturing the entire table from above, Allah being outside of time
03:53encompasses all of time, past, present, and future with his infinite knowledge.
03:58So being eternal means to encompass all of time at once.
04:02It doesn't mean to just be at the very beginning of the timeline or to be before everything.
04:06So as you see, it is very reasonable to think that Allah can know all times and all events
04:12and that he has written all of them into our destiny.
04:15Right at this point, we come across a very popular question.
04:18If God is beyond time and he knows and writes everything even before it happens, then where
04:23is our free will in this picture?
04:25In other words, are we just puppets?
04:32Having destiny and free will seem contradictory at first.
04:35But even if a person cannot figure out the connection between these two concepts, we know
04:39the existence of our free will very well.
04:42For example, in a study made by the Pew Research Center in 2012, Muslims around the world were
04:46asked whether they believe in destiny and whether they think they have free will.
04:50While 70-90% of the Muslims believe that destiny is predetermined by the Creator, they also believe
04:55in individual responsibility and free will.
04:58So how is it that having something written in our destiny doesn't force us to do that thing?
05:03Knowing something does not mean forcing someone to do that thing.
05:06The most common mistake we make is to confuse these two concepts.
05:10Knowledge is one thing and power is another thing.
05:13Knowing is one thing and forcing someone is another.
05:16Think of the different colors of the sun.
05:18Yellow is one of these colors and red is another.
05:21Similarly, Allah also has different names and attributes.
05:25One of his names is Al-Alim, the all-knowing, and the other is Al-Qadir, the all-powerful.
05:30So his knowing is different and his forceful intervention are two different attributes.
05:35So the fact that Allah knows everything does not mean that we don't have free will or
05:40that we do everything by force.
05:41There is a famous principle in the science of logic.
05:44Knowledge is subject to what is known.
05:46That is, knowledge about something is based on, dependent on the reality of that thing
05:51in the real world.
05:52In other words, knowledge doesn't create or change the reality of something, but instead
05:57it is dependent on and corresponds to how that thing actually is.
06:00There is a very good example that brings this close to mind.
06:03Let's say you are on top of a mountain and you see two trains coming towards each other.
06:07Feeling sorry for the people on the trains, you write on a piece of paper that these trains
06:12will crash in 8 seconds.
06:13And they actually do crash into each other in 8 seconds.
06:16Now in this situation, can we see something like, the trains crashed because you wrote
06:21that on the paper beforehand, therefore you are to blame.
06:24Of course not.
06:25The trains didn't crash because you wrote that on the paper.
06:28You knew that the trains were going to crash, that's why you wrote it.
06:31Just as even we can know when the trains are going to crash with our limited knowledge,
06:35Allah can surely know what we will do in our lives with his infinite knowledge.
06:39But as we said before, Allah's knowledge of events does not impose on or destroy our
06:44free will, but rather reflects the reality of those events as they are.
06:48The time of the sunrise is written on the calendar, right?
06:50But can that writing itself be a factor that forces the sun to rise at that specific time?
06:56Of course not.
06:57It was written like that based on the movements of the sun in the real life.
07:00Similarly, the fact that Allah knows what we will do, does not make us do these things.
07:05The things that are written in our destiny are there because we are actually going to
07:08do them.
07:09Knowledge doesn't change reality.
07:11It just conforms to it.
07:13At this point, we have to clarify that the concept of destiny is basically divided into two.
07:18One is involuntary destiny, qadar izrari.
07:21And the other is voluntary destiny, qadar ikhtiyari.
07:24Involuntary destiny is the type of destiny that is determined only by Allah, beyond our
07:28choice or control.
07:30We have no say in them.
07:32Voluntary destiny, on the other hand, refers to the actions that we decide to do freely.
07:36And this is where we are fully responsible.
07:38So the fact that Allah imposes his will on us in certain aspects does not mean that he
07:42won't ever hold us accountable for anything.
07:45He will hold us responsible for the actions we are able to choose with our own will.
07:49For example, let's think of an elevator.
07:52Someone using an elevator does not know anything about his mechanical system or the setup details
07:56of the entire unit, nor does he have any effect over them.
07:59The interior design and the general mechanical system of this elevator are completely independent
08:04of that person's will.
08:06But the choice of which floor the elevator will go to belongs to that person.
08:10It is up to him to go up to the 7th floor or down to the minus 7th floor.
08:14His will applies there.
08:16In this life, our situation is like this example.
08:19There are things we can intervene in, and there are others we cannot.
08:22We are responsible for some choices, but not for others.
08:26For example, we don't get to choose whether we are born male or female, our physical characteristics,
08:31who our parents are going to be, or the country we are born in.
08:34That's why we are not responsible for these things, just like the setup of the elevator system.
08:38So this is involuntary destiny.
08:41But for our deliberate actions that we choose to do, we are responsible.
08:44We can either do good deeds or bad deeds.
08:47So just like we can choose which floor to go to in the elevator, we can also make free
08:51choices in this world.
08:53And this is voluntary destiny.
08:54By the way, did you know that you can literally see the existence of destiny around you?
08:59I mean, destiny's existence is so obvious that it is actually spread throughout the universe,
09:04and is even visible to our eyes.
09:07But how?
09:12There is evidence of destiny in everything we see around us.
09:16Destiny basically means knowledge and planning.
09:18And when we look at every corner of the universe, we also witness that everything is functioning
09:22through knowledge and planning.
09:24Think of an apple tree that you come across while walking in the street.
09:27Isn't all the formation stages of that apple tree already written in its seed from the very
09:32beginning?
09:33Yes, it was programmed in it.
09:35There's a plan, a draft in the seed.
09:37Or think of a cute white rabbit.
09:39Or a little kitten.
09:40Or a newborn baby looking around with their deep blue eyes.
09:44For all of them, DNA is like a book of destiny, giving us the information of those creatures
09:48in advance.
09:49It tells us the physical characteristics of a baby to be born, even some of the diseases
09:54it is likely to suffer from in the future.
09:56So DNA is like a small version of the book of destiny.
09:59The fact that our eyelashes have a certain length, that our hair has a different growing
10:03pattern, that the lengths of our fingers are based on a certain measure and logic.
10:07All of them show that there is actually a plan, a program, and destiny for everything.
10:13Think about it.
10:14If something works in a very organized and calculated way, doesn't it show that there
10:17is planning behind it?
10:19There cannot be a plan functioning in something that happens randomly or spontaneously.
10:23In other words, when we look around us, the fact that everything, from atoms to the stars,
10:29is governed by a certain law.
10:31That the movements of the sun and the moon all follow a precise pattern.
10:34That the plans and programs of all living beings are already written in their seeds,
10:39in their DNA, shows us the obvious reality of destiny and proves its existence in the universe.
10:45Even the fact that there is something called deja vu can be given as proof of destiny.
10:49You know how sometimes we say, wait, I have lived this moment before, I'm sure this happened
10:53to you too.
10:54We actually feel this way because in the realm of the souls, Allah allowed us to see that
10:58specific event on a lawful mafuz, meaning the preserved tablet of destiny.
11:03This tablet contains the information of all the events, actions, and outcomes from the
11:07beginning of creation until the end of time.
11:10And so when that event actually happens, we feel as if we have experienced that thing before.
11:14How could we possibly know otherwise about something we have just experienced?
11:18This means our soul was shown that moment from our book of destiny.
11:22And very accurately, the name deja vu was given to this type of experience, which in French
11:27means already seen.
11:29So it shouldn't be irrational to think that all our physical and spiritual states and
11:33all the things we will experience are already written somewhere.
11:37Or if we look at the Quran, we can also find many proofs of destiny's existence.
11:42For example, the fact that Surat Al-Masad foretold that Abu Lahab and his wife were going
11:46to die as disbelievers is an incredible prophetic miracle.
11:49Allah also foretold in Surat Al-Rum that the Romans were going to defeat the Persians in
11:53the future, which seemed impossible at the time.
11:56This is also news from the unseen, prophetic miracle.
11:59And this prophecy came true as well, of course.
12:01So the fact that the Quran has these types of ayat that give accurate news about what's
12:05going to happen are great proofs that Allah also knows the future.
12:15There are different types of decrees within the concept of destiny.
12:18One is conditional decree, Al-Qadaa Al-Muallak, also known as suspended decree, and the other
12:24is absolute decree, Al-Qadaa Al-Mubram, meaning fixed destiny.
12:28So the first one is changeable and the second one is unchangeable.
12:31For example, let's say Allah has decreed a calamity for a person, but he has tied this
12:36calamity to whether he prays or not.
12:38In other words, Allah determined that if the person prays, the calamity will be lifted,
12:43removed from him.
12:44But if he doesn't pray, it will happen.
12:46So since there is a condition for this event to take place, it is called conditional decree.
12:51The hadith about Sadaqah being a barrier between the person and the calamity is a perfect
12:54example of this.
12:56In conditional decree, this type of situation is decided like this.
12:59If he gives charity, the calamity will go away.
13:03But if he doesn't, it is going to happen.
13:05But whether a person will eventually give Sadaqah or not, is already written in Al-Lawuh
13:09al-Mahfuz.
13:10Whereas the conditional decree is written in Lawuh al-Mahf wal-Ithbat, the tablet of erasure
13:14and affirmation.
13:15In other words, Al-Lawuh al-Mahfuz is set in stone.
13:19It is fixed.
13:20But Lawuh al-Mahf wal-Ithbat is like a board that can be erased and written on again.
13:24In short, Allah knows the final state of everything.
13:27But we don't, so our part is always to try our best and make dua.
13:39One of the most beautiful aspects of belief in destiny is that it creates a deep sense
13:43of peace and trust in the heart.
13:45The person lives his life with confidence and joy.
13:48When a calamity or hardship hits him, he doesn't panic, having the comfort that comes from
13:52believing in destiny.
13:54Because he knows for sure that everything is perfectly planned, down to its finest detail
13:59under the infinite knowledge and power of Allah.
14:02Think about it.
14:03Whatever happens to you, if you know that it's under control, wouldn't that create a perfect
14:07sense of confidence and peace of mind in you?
14:10Being in destiny, you would say, nothing in this world happens randomly or without purpose.
14:15Everything has meaning and wisdom behind it.
14:18And this faith makes you deeply feel that every moment, every second, Allah is taking care
14:23of you.
14:24Someone who believes in destiny thinks that he is constantly under Allah's protection.
14:28He puts aside all his concerns about the future and regrets about the past.
14:32In every situation, he says, my master is enough for me.
14:36After all, everything is under his command and continues his life with this comforting
14:41mindset.
14:42Believing in destiny also protects the person from arrogance and pride, because he knows
14:45that all his good deeds and successes are not a result of his own efforts, but a blessing
14:50that Allah granted him.
14:52So he turns to his Lord, not to his ego.
14:54But at the same time, he also realizes his responsibility for the bad things he does.
14:59He doesn't put the blame on his faith and say, I was meant to do this evil deed.
15:02It was already written.
15:03But rather recognizes that he has free will and accepts that he is responsible.
15:08Another important point is that Islam is the only religion that explains this concept
15:12of destiny in a way that appeals to both the mind and the heart.
15:16This deep and comprehensive understanding of destiny is another proof that Islam is the
15:21right religion.
15:22Now let's go back to the question we asked at the beginning.
15:24Was watching this video written in your destiny?
15:27Yes.
15:28But it was you who chose to click on it.
15:31One day, when you reach the finish line of this journey of life, whether you will end up
15:35in heaven or hell is already written in your destiny.
15:38But what will take you there will be the choices you make with your own free will.
