00:00And in Brazil, as far-right former President Heide Bolsonaro's judgment day approaches,
00:05all eyes turn to the five Supreme Court justices who will rule on his case.
00:09Our correspondent Brian Mir has more.
00:13On September 2nd, the first working group of the Brazilian Supreme Court will start
00:17its final deliberations in the case against ex-president Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his
00:22cronies for plotting to enact a military coup.
00:25The group is made up of five justices, and a unanimous decision would be final.
00:30Although conviction seems imminent, some people are worried that Justice Luis Fux will attempt
00:35to stall the procedure, as he has done before, buying time for the opposition by pushing it
00:40into the new year.
00:42I will resolve myself to analyze this better in the post-hearing space if I wish to resolve
00:50the right, not a right, is a power, not a right, a power and a duty to exercise the power
00:56of review.
00:57I effectively need to receive the formal complaints so that I can then, indeed, deepen my understanding
01:05of all these questions I have raised here as observations.
01:11In 2016, Fux voted in favor of removing President Dilma Rousseff from office for an infraction
01:18she was later ruled innocent of.
01:19In 2018, he voted in favor of opening an exception to the Constitution to enable the imprisonment
01:26of Lula da Silva.
01:28Earlier this month, he was the only justice to vote against house arrest for Jair Bolsonaro.
01:33Nevertheless, many legal experts believe that the Bolsonaro ruling will proceed according
01:37to this type of coup-et-en-coup.
01:44This is a historical trial.
01:45Brazil can make an example of how democracy can resist this type of coup-et-en-coup.
01:48I believe that the ruling will take place normally.
01:52The Brazilian public is carefully accompanying the process.
01:56There has been an intense level of press coverage.
01:59I don't see any available space for any of the justice in the first working group to make
02:06any type of manoeuvre.
02:07Hopes are very high.
02:08We have hope that everything proceeds according to the law.
02:13Final deliberations in the Bolsonaro trial are expected to last for 10 days, culminating
02:19on September 12th.
02:20If ruled guilty, the far-right former president is facing a prison sentence of up to 44 years.
02:27Brian Mir, tell us, sir.
