00:00We go now to one of the topics of the day. Brazil's Supreme Court issued a guilty verdict for
00:06ex-president Jair Bolsonaro and seven co-defendants. Here is our correspondent Brian Mir with more.
00:14Brazil's Supreme Court surprised a lot of people today by finishing the final deliberations in the
00:20case against former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven of his cronies for attempting to implement
00:24a military coup after he lost re-election in 2022 a day earlier than what was originally planned with
00:31a guilty verdict issued for all eight defendants as well as their sentences. Here's how the sentences
00:37played out. Mauro Cid, who was a key witness for the prosecution and had struck a plea bargain deal
00:42with the prosecution team, received a suspended sentence of two years in exchange for his
00:48collaboration. Bolsonaro's former intelligence chief, Alexandre Ramigan, received a sentence
00:54of 16 years. General Paulo Sergio Nogueira, who was one of Jair Bolsonaro's former defense ministers,
01:02received a sentence of 19 years. General Augusto Heleno, who is known to many as the commander
01:09of the Minusta troops during the Sitz-Soleil massacre in Haiti in 2004, received a sentence of 21 years,
01:16lower than what several people expected. However, Minister Alexandre de Moraes said he was lowering it a bit
01:24because of his advanced age. Almir Garnier Santos, who was commander-in-chief of the Navy under Bolsonaro,
01:31received a sentence of 24 years. Anderson Torres, another former minister of justice for Jair Bolsonaro,
01:38received a 24-year sentence. General Walter Braganeto, who was pinpointed as one of the leaders of the coup
01:45attempt and served as defense minister and also Jair Bolsonaro's vice presidential candidate in 2022,
01:52was sentenced to 26 years behind bars. And the man appointed as the ringleader in the coup attempt,
01:58Jair Bolsonaro, received a sentence of 27 years and three months. Although they've all received their
02:04sentences, this doesn't necessarily mean they're immediately going to jail. There's going to be a
02:09few weeks in which the defense lawyers can try to mount some kind of appeal and kick the case to the
02:15entire 11-member body of the Supreme Court. But for now, people who are fans of democracy in Brazil
02:21are commemorating the sentencing and guilty verdicts for Jair Bolsonaro and his cronies.
