Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston Betts and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester
00:03
asking people about punishments for children.
00:06
And that's because here in England it is still legal to use reasonable physical punishment on children
00:10
which basically means hitting or smacking in certain situations.
00:15
In places like Scotland and in Wales it has been outlawed for a while
00:17
so we want to know what people's views on it are and whether they think the law should change.
00:21
No, not for me. I mean, I think, you know, society's moved on
00:25
and I always think, you know, words are more powerful than physical harm, especially than children's.
00:30
I don't really think that a smack harms a child.
00:36
There's a difference between a smack, maybe on the back of the leg or the hand,
00:43
to a jolly good spanking, which is wrong, we all know.
00:47
And if you're sensible and you're honest, everyone will know what's appropriate and what isn't.
