We went out into Manchester to ask people on the street about whether it was still acceptable for parents to hit their children at all, or whether the law should be changed here in the UK.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Houston Betts and today I'm out on the streets of Manchester
00:03asking people about punishments for children.
00:06And that's because here in England it is still legal to use reasonable physical punishment on children
00:10which basically means hitting or smacking in certain situations.
00:15In places like Scotland and in Wales it has been outlawed for a while
00:17so we want to know what people's views on it are and whether they think the law should change.
00:21No, not for me. I mean, I think, you know, society's moved on
00:25and I always think, you know, words are more powerful than physical harm, especially than children's.
00:30I don't really think that a smack harms a child.
00:36There's a difference between a smack, maybe on the back of the leg or the hand,
00:43to a jolly good spanking, which is wrong, we all know.
00:47And if you're sensible and you're honest, everyone will know what's appropriate and what isn't.
