00:00Previously on The Apprentice, each team was told to open a new restaurant that would be rated by Zagat's customer survey.
00:07The winning team will be the one that gets the highest Zagat ratings based on their customer reviews.
00:17Mosaic enjoyed Chris's crash course in customer service.
00:21You want to ask them where they're from, and then they're going to say, well, I'm from Bumblef*** New York.
00:24It doesn't matter. Whatever they say, you go, really? Oh, that's nice.
00:28Apex couldn't stomach the bickering between Gen C and Stacey.
00:32I have done everything you've asked. Don't walk away from it.
00:36The men use sex appeal to charm their customers.
00:39We had four gay guys, so I'm like, John, walk over by the table, bend over and tie your shoe.
00:46But the women left their customers with a bad taste in their mouths.
00:50What do you think of the decor?
00:51For me, it's a little too stuck.
00:54Mosaic won, and tensions boiled over into the suite.
00:59I've never met a bunch of witches that I wish I could fire more.
01:04Stacey R. Kills me.
01:07Stop running around here like you always do, wreaking havoc.
01:10Apex went to the boardroom for a third consecutive time, and the women were criticized for their business skills.
01:17Seven women can't work together.
01:18I'm embarrassed to be a businesswoman right now.
01:22Me too.
01:22Me too.
01:22And Gen C was called out for lack of leadership.
01:26I think that the leadership has talked the talk, but not walked the walk.
01:29I was a leader.
01:30However, you just can't get it.
01:32You failed.
01:33You failed.
01:34You failed.
01:34Jennifer, your entire team hated you.
01:37This is really easy.
01:38You're fired.
01:39Fourteen candidates are left.
01:43Who will be fired this week?
01:45Money, money, money, money, money.
01:53Money, money, money, money.
01:59Money.
02:00Some people got to have it.
02:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:05Some people really need it.
02:09Listen to me, y'all.
02:10Two things, two things, two things.
02:13Bad things, baby.
02:15Dollar bills, y'all.
02:19Come on, that deal, oh, deal.
02:24Make great.
02:26Almighty, dollar, I know that's money.
02:33Give me a nickel, brother.
02:34Can you sell that?
02:37Money can drive some people out of the more.
02:42Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah.
02:44No good, no good, no good.
02:46Money, money, money, money, money.
02:49Money, money, money.
02:52How'd it go?
03:05Brutal.
03:06Stacey, Elizabeth, and Jen are in the boardroom.
03:10Ah.
03:11Did it get out of here?
03:12What happened?
03:13I won't ask anymore.
03:15Carolyn said it the best when she said, look, I am ashamed to be a woman because you guys
03:20keep losing and you guys keep losing and you guys are a disgrace and I agree, we have been a complete disgrace.
03:26I need a beer.
03:27I think we all need a beer.
03:28I think we all need a beer.
03:29I think we all need a beer, too.
03:31The witch is dead.
03:40Jen C's gone.
03:41Jen's gone.
03:43Which witch?
03:44Which witch?
03:45I think that everyone in our team right now is really exhausted and I think everyone's really
03:48fed up.
03:49We're fed up with losing, we are fed up with the stupid petty crap that goes on amongst
03:54team members.
03:55To be honest, though, Sandy, it did feel like you were helping her build a case against
03:59us today, which is not very productive for the team.
04:01I'll agree with that.
04:02Well, I do think it's unprofessional to start crying in the middle of the restaurant and
04:04I do feel if you have to order bread, it shouldn't take 45 minutes.
04:07I agree with you.
04:08That was my whole point.
04:09I would really like to see the women do extremely well, but I'm a competitor first and a woman
04:16second.
04:17Round one.
04:18Fight!
04:19I don't think it's...
04:20It's like, I feel like the cancer is going to spread to me.
04:23In this case, my team is a group of men.
04:26I'm not rooting for uteruses versus penises here.
04:29I'm rooting for my team, whatever team that is, to win.
04:32Ellen.
04:33Hi.
04:34Good morning.
04:35It's Rana.
04:36Mr. Trump would like you to meet him at UPS at 8.
04:40Okay, thank you.
04:45Bye-bye.
04:46Absolutely.
04:47As usual, the men pick the names randomly.
04:49And, uh, big news, I'm the project manager.
04:53Got the troops up and we head it over.
04:55Good morning.
05:02Good morning.
05:03Good morning.
05:04Good morning.
05:16Good morning.
05:17Good morning.
05:18George is back.
05:19George is back.
05:20George and Carolyn, again, will be my eyes and ears.
05:24Well, last week, you folks were just decimated by lack of leadership.
05:31Your leader was fired.
05:33The infighting, the bickering, it's disgusting.
05:37So what I've decided to do is somebody that I have really developed a respect for, a woman,
05:43Pamela.
05:44I'm going to ask you to go over to Apex and be their project manager.
05:50Let's go.
05:51Say goodbye, fellas.
05:53She's done a nice job.
05:57She's done a nice job.
05:58We're back now to seven men and seven women.
06:02Men against women.
06:03We're going to see if you can pull this whole mess together.
06:07It's not going to be easy.
06:09Everybody on this team hates each other.
06:11The level of animosity is beyond belief.
06:15All right.
06:16Nowadays, retailing has changed greatly.
06:20Today, you have electronic retailers.
06:24The biggest of all is QVC.
06:27QVC's customers buy a hundred million items to the tune of over $4 billion a year.
06:35That's a big business.
06:37And after they sell them, UPS ships 54 million packages.
06:42It's inconceivable, but that's what they ship.
06:45Your task is to go to the headquarters of QVC, which is in Pennsylvania.
06:52And you're going to pick a product, and then you're going to appear on live television at QVC selling the product.
07:02The team with the highest gross sales wins.
07:05It's as simple as that.
07:07The winning team is going to be extremely happy.
07:10It's back up to the suite.
07:12The losing team, it's back to the boardroom.
07:15Now, Raj.
07:17Last week, you led your team to victory.
07:19You were the project manager.
07:21So, if your team goes back to the boardroom, you will be exempt.
07:26So, good luck.
07:28Have fun.
07:29It's going to be very interesting.
07:30I'll see you soon.
07:31Bye.
07:34Welcome.
07:35Welcome.
07:43You're listening.
07:46It's a limo bus.
07:47Once we got the task, we were then informed that we would be boarding a bus to travel two, two and a half hours to West Chester, Pennsylvania, to the headquarters of QVC.
07:55Here's what I want to do.
07:57We're going to do things very differently than the way you guys have done it in the past several months.
08:02Please don't say to me, that's not the way we used to do it.
08:05Because whatever you used to do isn't working.
08:08I am not going to be your friend.
08:09I am going to be bossy and I am going to be bitchy for the next 24 hours.
08:12And then I won't have to do it again.
08:14All right?
08:15Personalities.
08:16I don't know the personalities.
08:18I don't know what's happened in the past.
08:19Here's what I want you to know.
08:20I don't care.
08:22I don't care.
08:23Pamela certainly treated us in a condescending way.
08:26We are women that have been beaten down.
08:28And the last thing that we needed was to be lectured by someone our age about what was appropriate and what was not.
08:35I'm here to make sure that all of you guys are functioning well.
08:38So I want each of you to tell me what it is you feel comfortable being in charge of.
08:42And I'm going to hold you accountable for it.
08:44Public speaking is my deal.
08:45It comes very naturally to me.
08:47And sales.
08:48Got it.
08:49No, that's helpful.
08:50Anyone want some whiskey?
08:51All right, I'm going to stop right there.
08:53What you guys are doing when someone else is talking, we're not going to do that again.
08:56And it's because you're doing something.
08:58Stacy, you're doing something while someone else is talking.
09:01When someone in the team is talking, I want you to stop what you're doing and I want you to listen to what they say.
09:06I had not only to manage this team, but literally to whip them into shape.
09:11I had to do a 180 on this team's attitude.
09:13And you can't do that by playing Mr. Nice Guy.
09:16If you don't win this time, it will really look like you guys just can't get it together.
09:20Just do what I ask of you.
09:22Bill, we just bought the rest of the Suntime site, so we own 100% of it now.
09:34The marketplace is totally brilliant.
09:36If you price something a little bit high, all of a sudden, they don't buy.
09:41If you price it a little bit low, the marketplace just comes and eats it alive.
09:45You have to find the right price.
09:48And if you don't, big trouble.
09:50You better do a good job, Bill, or your ass is grass.
09:54Okay, good luck, Bill. Bye.
10:01This is a very big one.
10:02Yes.
10:03A very big one.
10:04This is huge.
10:05Because they've taken Pamela away, so it might look like, oh my gosh, they're winning because of her.
10:10Yeah.
10:11And that's exactly what Trump's going to say if we lose.
10:15We can't lose this one.
10:24And we're pressured because we have to make this decision.
10:27So we arrived at QVC, and the very first element of our strategy was to pick a product.
10:31Hey, guess what?
10:32It works.
10:33It's no problem.
10:34You guys, it's value.
10:36So we decided to go with the It Works cleaning block, which looks like a sponge, but it's made out of a product.
10:40It's made out of a product that when water is applied, will erase really hard to get out marks.
10:45That's it.
10:46It's like a no-brainer.
10:47Now, who wants to be in charge of actually being on screen?
10:51Maria's really, she's a great presence.
10:53I definitely think that Jen is great as well.
10:55Perfect.
10:56So Jen and Maria are communicating the message.
10:59Sandy, you want to be in charge of the set design?
11:01Okay.
11:02Elizabeth and Ivana, you guys are in charge of the script.
11:05And Stacy's responsibility to be in charge of legal.
11:08You're the liaison.
11:09Everything that happens with legal questions goes through you.
11:11All right?
11:12And I want you to be thinking about pricing.
11:14All right?
11:15Okay.
11:16Everybody feel comfortable with their roles?
11:17Pamela wanted to be able to assign accountability to every member of the team but herself.
11:22So she went around and sort of said, you're doing this, you're doing this, you're doing this, you're doing this.
11:27But she never really fully said, look, if I'm doing something, I'm going to take accountability for that.
11:33And that annoyed me.
11:34But we still need to select our price.
11:36So I need to know where you guys are on that.
11:38What about like in the medium price point?
11:40I mean, do you have any thoughts on like staying low versus medium?
11:46Do you have a recommendation?
11:48Or is your recommendation, no, I just read the facts and I have no recommendation?
11:51No, my recommendation is it seems like if we want an easy number that people seem to roll with, $19.99.
12:00Don't tell me if.
12:01Your decision as a business person, not as a lawyer, your decision as a business person is to do what?
12:06Can you not talk to me like this?
12:08We have to price the product.
12:09I mean, let's chill out.
12:10Every time I'm asking you a question, don't tell me if.
12:13I want to know in your opinion, the business decision is to do what?
12:18I'm not really sure.
12:19I mean, maybe you have some experience.
12:21Do you have a recommendation?
12:22Stacy couldn't really get her arms around that problem.
12:26Until you've studied business and until you've done business, you're not going to know that.
12:30Long story short, I basically had to kind of take that responsibility away from her.
12:34She couldn't handle the problem.
12:36So what price, what price point?
12:39Are we going to call it a De'Longhi cooking grill or De'Longhi panini?
12:51We don't pick that.
12:52They write that.
12:53Okay.
12:54We're selling a De'Longhi grill, which is an Italian-made product.
12:56We knew this task was going to boil down to two things, product and pricing.
13:00So once we had selected the product, we knew the next thing that we could control that would affect sales the most was pricing.
13:05If you lower the price to $69.
13:06What's the price right now?
13:07$70?
13:08$71.25.
13:09I think we need to stay over $70 to try to maximize our revenue.
13:12For me, it's an on or off button on whether or not somebody's going to buy a grill.
13:15We want to keep the revenues up.
13:17Why not make it lower though?
13:18It's basic supply and demand.
13:20I'm familiar with this.
13:21Okay.
13:22Well, that's all we're talking about.
13:23But I'm not talking about pricey elasticity.
13:24I'm talking about the psychological effect, which does-
13:27But it doesn't show the total price.
13:29We're not showing any 60 numbers.
13:30Kelly had a firm position that $71 in change was going to be the best price.
13:35Raj felt that the price should be below $70 because there was some kind of a $70 mental threshold that people would have to cross in order to make the purchase.
13:43You have no idea.
13:45I'm trying to listen to what you've been saying.
13:47When I've been trying to talk, when I've been trying to tell them-
13:48I've been trying to understand what you're saying.
13:50Then stop talking.
13:51Okay.
13:52Then explain it simply so I can understand.
13:53You got it.
13:54Kelly was very much jockeying for the position of de facto leader of the team.
13:59No question about it.
14:00Here's the reality.
14:01I know.
14:02That's the reality.
14:03So this is unreal.
14:04I know.
14:05I agree with you.
14:06I agree with you 100%.
14:07You want to just keep it at $71.25?
14:08Okay.
14:10If I were Chris, I would definitely be concerned about having so much power residing in someone else's
14:16I would be concerned about it.
14:17I would not let it happen.
14:30Here's the story.
14:31I think that we can very effectively push for nearly a dollar a sponge.
14:38So that being said, we're looking at nearly $30 for the package, right?
14:43Yes.
14:44The final price is going to be around there, right?
14:46So there's no magic number.
14:48There is no $19.99.
14:50So my concern is that the people who are going to get this product at a dollar per sponge,
14:56they're going to be like, this blows.
14:58I wouldn't price this over $19.99.
15:00That's sort of the magic number.
15:01Ultimately, Pamela made the decision that she would be responsible for pricing.
15:05So that was her decision, not mine.
15:07This is Dave, the general counsel.
15:10So it's called the It Works cleaning block and we need to demonstrate it.
15:14Okay.
15:15Do you want to just do it now?
15:16Yeah, let's do it now.
15:17I want him to watch the whole run through just to make sure everything's A-okay.
15:20I think that would be smarter than just...
15:21Okay.
15:22Is that okay?
15:23Sure.
15:24Do you have to be somewhere else?
15:25No, no, whatever.
15:26Okay.
15:27Stacy's a lawyer through and through and through.
15:29We put her on legal detail, which means that a lot of items need to be cleared with the lawyers
15:33here before they can go on the air.
15:35Bad idea.
15:36I know that there are some bottles of cleaners that are trademarked, so I want to...
15:39Oh, let's look at them.
15:40Tell me what to do.
15:41Her idea was, God forbid this doesn't get approved by the lawyers.
15:45They're going to shut us down.
15:46Like, she really believes this stuff.
15:48They're not going to shut us down, Stacy.
15:49Don't worry about it.
15:50Put your little stickers on the little bottles and we'll be just fine.
15:53I think this one's okay.
15:55This one's okay.
15:56Okay, so let's go through every single bottle.
15:57During this vetting process, Pamela kind of gave me a disapproving look when the attorney
16:03was going through the product.
16:05We are not here to be legally thorough.
16:08We are not opening up ourselves to any liability.
16:10We want to get him to yes.
16:12Okay, you know what?
16:13You understand what I mean by that?
16:14You asked me to do the legal role and now you're asking me to do something...
16:18I'm giving you feedback as to why I wanted you to stop speaking because you clearly didn't
16:22understand what I meant by that.
16:23Okay.
16:24I mean, come on.
16:25There are so many other people that she could have asked.
16:27If she didn't want someone who's legally capable, then don't ask the lawyer.
16:31Ask the wedding planner to be the lawyer.
16:34We're about to do a run through.
16:35They got the host.
16:36Ivana, Ivana.
16:37We need to start rehearsal now.
16:38Just let me know when you're ready.
16:39Over.
16:40Okay.
16:41Cue them to start.
16:42Everyone, clear the set.
16:43Cameras, clear the set.
16:44Welcome in to QVC Stanford.
16:45My name is Dave King.
16:46We're very excited to be here.
16:47We've got a brand new product called It Works.
16:49On my right, Maria and Jen.
16:50Maria, welcome to the show.
16:51Hi.
16:53Hey, Jen.
16:54How are you?
16:55Thanks for having us.
16:56Hi, Dave.
16:57Thanks for having us.
16:58Thanks for having us.
16:59It works.
17:00Well, Dave, I'm glad you asked.
17:01Have you ever had a permanent mark in your home that you thought was going to become a
17:03permanent fixture?
17:04Mm-hmm.
17:05Wouldn't go away.
17:06When you add water to this sponge, it's made out of a wonderful material that automatically
17:19erases crayon, ink, and, lastly, permanent marker.
17:22Maria needs to hold still in one place, not so much movement with her arms.
17:26This particular product, It Works, actually takes permanent markers and it makes them not
17:30permanent anymore.
17:31How cool is that?
17:32That is excellent.
17:33She's very flustered and very gregarious and her arms are moving and her eyes are blinking
17:37and she really looks like she's having a seizure, so she needs to calm down.
17:40Here, it's really just taking away the ink.
17:42What about the paint?
17:43And the paint's not going anywhere.
17:45I think Jen is more convincing than Maria.
17:46I do too.
17:47I do too.
17:48For large jobs, you have a large size tool.
17:51Okay.
17:52Thank you, Jen.
17:53Thank you, Maria.
17:55And done.
17:56And cut.
17:57I'm not sure it's going to work like that.
17:59Okay.
18:00We have big problems, so let's talk about the big ones.
18:02Maria's style isn't working.
18:03I agree.
18:04Okay?
18:05Yes.
18:06I'm going down to tell Maria that.
18:07Ivana, Pamela is coming down right now to talk to Maria.
18:11Okay.
18:12Copy.
18:13While we're waiting, Ivana, I want you to make sure that you tell Jen that she was awesome,
18:17that everything she did was perfect.
18:19Secondly, I want you to talk to Maria, make sure that she does not say anything.
18:23Jen is leading this discussion.
18:26Is she?
18:27Copy.
18:28Got it.
18:29You don't have to have the talk.
18:30Yeah.
18:31I got it.
18:32Loud and clear.
18:33My first reaction was that that could not have been more inappropriate and a more inappropriate
18:38way to communicate their wishes to the very people that were going to be responsible for
18:42being on camera with a smile on their faces in a few minutes.
18:46We're only chilling.
18:47Well, you want us to put the food on now?
18:48I want you to practice.
18:49Hey, yeah.
18:50Well, there's a lot of kind of anticipation and nerves.
18:51We had 12 minutes and anyone that tries to sell anything in 12 minutes realizes how
18:53fast that time goes by.
18:54Here you go, baby.
18:55Sell some grills.
18:56Let's do it.
18:57The control room at QVC, it's a very, very exciting place.
18:59You step in and it's like walking into the floor of a Las Vegas Casino.
19:17There are computers everywhere and TV monitors, and I've just spent the last couple of hours
19:22learning about how it works.
19:23This blue arrow is just every time a new graphic goes up like a different product.
19:26different product. It would be sold every five seconds. You see how many people jumped on the
19:29line. We're going to have exact numbers of exact sales. We'll be able to relay that information
19:33to the people on the floor so they can say the right things to sell more products. Okay, here we
19:37go, folks. Open their mics. And we're up. What we've got here in front of you is the DeLonghi
19:44Panini Maker. I'm just going to lift it up here and show you what we're doing. We'll start it off
19:48and look at this. You can already see the melted cheese. This is a pita bread. You've got some
19:52cheese in there. A classic Italian sandwich. Now, it made a little bit of a mess, but I'm going to
19:56show you what's great about this product is it's so easy to clean. All we're going to do is
19:59work it. 12 minutes begin and immediately we see QVC's screen go from 300 calls to 50. It basically
20:10looked like the 1929 stock market crash. You've got to get them right. The cameras are jumping up
20:17and down. Get them more excited. We're not filling any product. No marks on the sandwich. You can see
20:20here. It's all over my fingers. We've got melted cheese. We could actually open up an entire
20:24restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Just doing the DeLonghi grill. We've got a call. We've got a call.
20:29Uh, I think we have a call. Yeah, let's go off to the phone. Welcome into the cell. Who's calling,
20:34Ploons? My name is Patty and I'm calling from Choctaw, Oklahoma. Well, hello, Patty. How are you?
20:40Hi, Patty. I was a parent. Spiking calls. Spiking calls. More calls. More calls. The only time that we
20:44truly jumped up in my heart and started pitter pattering was when the caller testimonial comes on.
20:49Somebody from Oklahoma is like, this is the best grill ever. I'm like, thank you. God bless this
20:53woman. Thank you, Patty. Thank you. That is it for this hour called Problem Solvers. But coming up
20:58next, a look at our today's special value, summer fun fashion, and so much more. So stay there.
21:04All right, guys. Great job. Thank you. What do we get at when it stops airing?
21:10We're 191 right now. I'm climbing. I gotta go. Roger, roger. We sold 200 units. We expected to sell 800
21:17units. You know, we did 25% of our objective. Those are very, very bad odds.
21:23We sold 191. 191 and climbing. Roger. Yeah, let's put it up.
21:27I think price mattered hugely. There are fundamental economic laws of supply and demand. The higher
21:34you raise prices, by and large, the lower your volume is. We worked our butts off, and if we
21:39don't win, nothing you can do. The thing that sucks is it's not even going to be close.
21:43Okay, okay. On here in six minutes. Let's go up here. Let's roll. Good luck. You did great. Good luck, guys. Have fun.
21:54We go up to the control room. Countdown. We're starting at three. We're going live at three.
22:02You can go, Rich. Okay. The people responsible for bringing It Works to QVC, Jen on my right.
22:09Hi, Dave. Thanks for having us.
22:10Hi, Maria. How are you?
22:11Fine. Thank you.
22:11All right, so it works. Well, how does it work? What is It Works?
22:15Dave, I've got these great new cleaning blocks I want to show you today.
22:18So, boom. Our segment begins. We start talking about the product. My eye was on sales. Elizabeth's
22:24eye was on the players and the camera shots, and I'm watching the clock tick, and they're
22:28a minute into it, and it's still zero, and they're two minutes into it, and it's still zero.
22:32There's no chemicals in the cleaning block.
22:33There's no chemicals, and what's incredible is you can use it over and over and over again,
22:36and I just want to show you. So, I'm sweating it. Then they start really illustrating it,
22:40showing what the product does. The calls start coming in, and I'm just watching the ticker.
22:44You've got a kid with their secret weapon. They've got their crayon. They're armed with
22:48their crayon. Get right on that stain. Suddenly, I come in with this new cleaning block, and
22:52look how easy it is. It was almost like watching a horse race, and you just want to win, and
22:57you want to cross over that finish line. But hopefully, it's going to work as well as you
23:01say. It's unbelievable.
23:02Dave, Jen. Thank you.
23:03Thank you very much, Dave.
23:04And Maria, thank you.
23:06When the 12 minutes were up, I felt that we had done the best we possibly could, and
23:11when we walked out of the control booth, we had sold about 650 units of this product,
23:16and it was just a relief. It was a sense of accomplishment.
23:19Was it okay?
23:20Well done, guys. You guys were great. I think they really needed fresh leadership. They really
23:24needed this kind of strength. I think they really appreciate this breath of fresh air.
23:27I had so much fun doing it.
23:29It was really fun.
23:30I loved it.
23:30And I want them to get just a blowout win. I don't want them to win by a little.
23:34I want them to just crush it. I'm like, I love it!
23:37Hello, folks.
24:01I watched both teams sell their items live on QVC, and they were both very impressive.
24:09Hi, George. How did the women do?
24:13Well, the women sold 659 units of the It Works cleaning tool at a retail price of $27.23 for
24:23a grand total sale of $17,944.57.
24:29That's pretty impressive. Carolyn, how did the men do?
24:32The men sold 252 units of the Panini Grill at a retail price of $71.25 for a grand total
24:42sale of $17,955. Mosaic wins by $10.40.
24:50Wow. $10.43. That's it? A really close one.
25:06Men, you really are doing well. I must tell you that so far you're just clobbering the women.
25:12I thought maybe we could help by putting Pamela on the other side, but that hasn't helped either.
25:18I think you're going to love your reward. You're going to meet two friends of mine,
25:22John McEnroe and Anna Kornikova.
25:24And you are going to be going to the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium in Flushing Meadows, and you are going
25:33to be playing tennis with Anna Kornikova and John McEnroe. And then, for a really special treat,
25:41I'm going to send all of you back to QVC on October 11th to sell your product again on live television.
25:50And that will be fun, and it will be an experience. And the women,
25:54I'll see you back in the boardroom. Somebody will be fired.
26:07This is the walk. This is the walk for the U.S. Open. Center Court, Arthur Ashe Stadium.
26:12Come on. Don't get so freaking defensive.
26:19Oh, Lord.
26:23I'm going to get whooped.
26:25You guys ready?
26:28Two in the baseline, okay? Let's see if there's any hope whatsoever.
26:31Andy, get in there.
26:33The ball's closer. Watch the ball that hits those strings.
26:36I've been playing tennis my whole life, and I have had a poster of McEnroe on my wall since,
26:40you know, I've been like five or six years old. And to get up here, first time at the U.S. Open,
26:44and play against McEnroe on center court, it's like, uh, it's beyond a dream come true. And it's great.
26:49Good man, Andy.
26:51Andy's got some feel.
26:57What? Come on!
26:59What's the score? 15-4.
27:01What are you, the gossip? The page six call?
27:03No, no. I want to invite you on the page.
27:05Oh.
27:06You know, I have a general rule. If you meet a woman of such beauty, you cannot...
27:09Excuse me, I'm serving.
27:11You must try, at least.
27:13Well, thank you for trying.
27:15I mean, life is one of those things.
27:17No points for not trying.
27:19If you are presented in the presence of such an epic beauty,
27:23you must take a shot, at least at coffee, a totally harmless beverage.
27:28How do you know I would go with you on a date?
27:29Well, I'm, you know, I'm a man of not too much humility.
27:35What do I get from it?
27:36What's the bet?
27:37Perhaps a coffee.
27:40I'll get a samovar, a Russian samovar.
27:43How about a dare?
27:45I'll dare you guys to something.
27:46No, no, no, don't do Anna.
27:48Yes!
27:49A dare.
27:50Wait, I mean, look, will you do a dare if I, if I return?
27:52If you return, you win your bets.
27:54I know, but if I win.
27:55And if you don't, then I...
27:57You have to do a dare.
27:58That's fair, Rod. I like this.
27:59Yeah, I like this.
28:00Anna challenged me that I could return one of five serves.
28:04And I took the bet, knowing that, you know,
28:06I would probably get precisely what I wanted,
28:08which was to spend more time up close,
28:11and in this case, quite personal, with Anna Kornikov.
28:15Nice and easy, Anna.
28:19One!
28:22There's a spin on it.
28:25It's like a tricky Democrat.
28:28I'm telling you, the ball has a spin when it's...
28:33This is like a Bill Clinton serve.
28:36Three!
28:38Anna, these are slick Willy serves you're giving me.
28:45One ball!
28:46It's like one of the chest you went in and hit you.
28:47She's very accurate.
28:49Pressure.
28:50I'm going to return this one.
28:51I'm going to return this one.
28:55Oh!
28:59We won!
28:59Okay, what do we do?
29:00What do we do?
29:01What do we do?
29:01Raj, take it off!
29:02Come on, let's...
29:02No!
29:03He's got a jogging...
29:04No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
29:09The team has come to a conclusion that...
29:15You have to run out of your boxes, Raj.
29:17You're out of the top.
29:18I'm going once in your boxes.
29:20Oh, God, this is worth watching.
29:22Go, Raji!
29:23Go, Raj.
29:28I think I'm going blind.
29:30Oh, jeez.
29:32Oh, Lord.
29:34Oh, my God.
29:40Okay, somebody get some pass balls.
29:42Yeah, yeah, let's see that.
29:43Let's take the ball.
29:44Oh, my God.
29:45You ready?
29:46Go, go, go, go.
29:47Bring it on.
29:57Come on.
30:01Oh, God.
30:04Okay, enough.
30:22He's going to need good reasons of why she would not be effective as his apprentice.
30:26She asked me to do legal.
30:27I was doing legal.
30:28She didn't like the job I was doing.
30:29She wanted me to be shady legal.
30:31Pamela deserves to be fired because she doesn't listen to others.
30:33She's irreverent.
30:34She may be disrespectful at times.
30:36She's very flippant.
30:37Isn't it pretty obvious how we lost?
30:38It's really obvious to me.
30:39Why?
30:40The price.
30:41It was way too high.
30:42Ultimately, Pamela ended up taking the pricing task out of my hands.
30:46She ended up deciding on it, and she was the one who made an uneducated decision.
30:50Tonight in the boardroom, it is really a decision between taking out Pamela and taking out one of us.
30:56Insofar as being Donald Trump's next apprentice, she's not up for that.
31:01I fundamentally believe that anybody with decent leadership experience could have successfully led us to a victory.
31:08I mean, I really believe that wholeheartedly.
31:18Maybe I'm just being, you know, a little too self-involved or self-centered in my view of it, but it felt to me like the Apex team wanted, they wanted direction and they wanted structure.
31:27They wanted a stronger leader to say, this is how you're going to behave in your job.
31:31And here's what I'll tolerate, and here's what I absolutely will not.
31:42I don't think that I'm cocky when I say that I would be surprised if I got fired.
31:45I think I just am pretty effective at gauging my capabilities versus some other team members.
31:50I think, unfortunately, they'll probably go under more fire, heavy fire, than I will.
31:56It's just the way it goes.
32:26And here's what I think.
32:30Pamela, Pamela.
32:34I put you on this position.
32:36Pamela, Pamela.
32:48Good to see you again.
32:49I put you in this position.
32:50You went to Wharton, you went to Harvard, and you lost again.
32:53We tied.
32:54Well, you didn't tie.
32:55You lost by $10, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it is a loss.
32:59What do you think happened?
33:01For all intents and purposes, to us, to me, it was a tie.
33:04First of all, let's get the business of the, we tied or we didn't.
33:10If I have to put in a bid for a multi-million dollar parcel of property,
33:15and I don't get the bid, we're not the highest bid, we're off.
33:19It doesn't make a difference whether we're $10 off or $10 million off.
33:23We didn't get the project.
33:26What do you think, Jennifer?
33:27I felt like we priced our item too high.
33:29I was very uncomfortable going over the $19.99.
33:32Who set the price?
33:33I believe Pamela set the price.
33:35Pamela, do you think it was too high?
33:37No, I think it was too low.
33:38You know, in all fairness, for some kind of a detergent or whatever, $21, it sounds like
33:43a lot of money to use.
33:44It should have been higher.
33:45What would you have priced it at if $27 is too low?
33:48$27 is too low, $0.10 too low, or probably $0.02 too low.
33:52The comparative products on the market were priced at a dollar.
33:56I'm just asking a simple question.
33:57Dollar bar.
33:58Which would bring it to $31.
34:00$30.
34:00It was a $30 bar set, $30.
34:03That's a hell of a lot of money.
34:04To me, it sounds like a lot of money.
34:05I think if you priced it accordingly, you would have blown the men away.
34:10Can I say something, just quickly?
34:13Pamela has a very distinct leadership style, and it's...
34:15I would say that's true.
34:16Yes, I think that's very true.
34:18You're very decisive, independent decision-making.
34:20There are a lot of times when you are making decisions for the team without really receiving
34:26all of the feedback from the rest of the team.
34:29Pamela, you have a choice.
34:31Yeah.
34:31You can bring two back, or you can bring three back.
34:35I'll bring two.
34:36Stacy and Maria.
34:38All right.
34:39Elizabeth, Jennifer, Ivana, Sandy, go up to the suite.
34:44Maria, Pamela, Stacy.
34:46I'll see you back in the boardroom.
34:48I'll see you back in the boardroom.
35:18George, what did you think?
35:22I was very impressed with Pamela's leadership.
35:25She did bring them together.
35:26They operated as a team, and I think that that's a major, major quality.
35:31I could understand why the rest of them might hate her for it, because she was so strong.
35:35And my feeling was that that was more important.
35:39Pamela could be too strong.
35:40Because she didn't.
35:41She hasn't listened to anybody.
35:41That may well be.
35:43She certainly has the characteristics of a good leader.
35:46Carolyn.
35:47I can agree with Jordan saying she did some leadership qualities, but the reason they lost
35:51this task was because it was overpriced.
35:53And that was her decision.
35:56All right.
35:56Robin, let him in.
36:00Mr. Trimple, see you now.
36:01Grandma, why did you bring Stacy in here?
36:25Stacy's in the boardroom because Stacy does not add one ounce of value.
36:29And in fact, she speaks so frequently that it's actually value.
36:34Stacy, she's tough.
36:34That's 100% incorrect, and I would love to respond to that.
36:37Are you insulted by that?
36:38No, because she's wrong.
36:39She speaks so frequently that it's actually distracting.
36:43May I please bring up an issue?
36:44I was asked to do legal.
36:46Unfortunately, for this particular task, there was a significant amount of legal issues.
36:50Pamela later explained to me that I was too legal, even though she had assigned me to
36:54be legal.
36:54I said, what does that mean?
36:55She said, you weren't thinking as a business person.
36:57I said, Pamela, you asked me to be an attorney.
37:00I am an attorney.
37:02If you ask me to do the business, I'll do the business.
37:03If you ask me to be the lawyer, I'll be the lawyer.
37:05I am not going to act unethically.
37:06If you want another Enron on your hands, Mr. Trump, here's Pamela.
37:11You can imagine the scope of this project, and Stacy's talking about the labels on the bottles.
37:15I would like to know now, why did you bring Maria in?
37:21I'd like to know as well.
37:23Here's my background on Maria, and I only had the opportunity to work with her on this
37:27one task.
37:28Maria identified herself as a specialist in public speaking, and I relied on her.
37:32Is that true?
37:33Yeah.
37:34Well, not as specialist as probably was strong, but I do have a public speaking background,
37:37and am constantly called upon to do sales training for both my organization and others.
37:42The entire group also encouraged Pamela that I was the person to be in the primary role.
37:48So why weren't you?
37:49So when we got up to do the very first test run, they determined that my rate of speech
37:53was not necessarily something that they were going to be able to identify with.
37:57I happen to agree with that.
37:59Do you think you're not good on camera?
38:01I think I am great on camera.
38:02Pamela, why did you put Maria in?
38:05I put Maria on camera because she identified herself as someone with a strong background
38:09in public speaking.
38:10When I first met with the team, I said-
38:11Well, she identified herself.
38:12Don't worry about herself.
38:13What do you think about her?
38:14I think that she's very compelling.
38:16When she speaks, I listen.
38:17She's a very compelling person with a great presence.
38:19We turned on the camera, and she crumbled.
38:22I literally had to replace her 15 minutes before we went live because she was so bad.
38:27What do you think, Stacy?
38:28What do you think of Maria?
38:29I think Maria is an excellent saleswoman.
38:32She was put in a great position.
38:33I don't think that she was utilized to the best of her skills.
38:35I think Pamela doesn't want to take accountability.
38:37I mean, that's why at the beginning of the task, she signed an individual group.
38:41She signed subtasks to everyone within the task.
38:43And a lot of wrong people.
38:45I think that she didn't do a good job of assessing our skill sets.
38:49I asked, I had a group meeting at the beginning and said, tell me your skill sets.
38:53They told me.
38:55And then there were people that stepped up and said, I want to be in charge of this.
38:57I want to be in charge of that.
38:58It fit with what they told me that they were in charge of.
39:00And now all of a sudden they're saying, wait a minute.
39:02You can't just rely on them.
39:04You have to sort of figure it out for yourself.
39:06You know, you're saying, what do you want to be in charge of?
39:07Does it fit?
39:08Well, you have to assess them yourself.
39:10And so far, I must be honest.
39:12I don't think you have a good assessment of people.
39:14She certainly has not even respect on this group.
39:15I don't think you have a good assessment of people.
39:17I think you're really smart.
39:18I think you're really interesting.
39:20I totally disagree with your choices.
39:23And you don't have a good assessment of people.
39:25Pamela, you're fired.
39:35Go ahead.
39:45Well, it was the right choice.
40:06I think it was the right choice.
40:07I mean, she's so opinionated and so sure of herself.
40:10And everything she says seems to be wrong.
40:13She is decisive.
40:14She's got a good head on her shoulders.
40:15She's decisive and she's wrong.
40:17She said wrong.
40:45Stay tuned for scenes from our next episode.
40:53For more Apprentice, log on to NBC.com.
40:56Well, my plan was to really not be too strategic about it.
41:00I really just wanted to be above board with people and give them direct feedback in a constructive way, not have factions of folks vying against each other.
41:12I was just really trying to be as above board and positive as I could and that that would in some way just sort of flow through to my team members.
41:20There's cutthroat in business and then there's, you know, heavy political mudslinging.
41:24And this was actually something that I wasn't very used to.
41:27It was an interesting experience.
41:29I think in the end it was probably my undoing.
41:32I probably maybe should have been a little bit more underhanded, but I just don't play like that.
