An area of low pressure to the northwest pushes a frontal system over the UK this evening. Some showers continue over the western coasts of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the South West. Some dry spells overnight for most, but a band of rain with some intense downpours pushes in from the west tomorrow morning. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the evening of 26/08/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Alex Burkill.
00:00Have you got a shower today? There have been quite a few around, but there's some heavier, perhaps even thundery rain pushing through as we go through tomorrow.
00:08The driving force for that is an area of low pressure to the northwest of the UK, pushing a frontal system across the UK.
00:15And even after that clears away towards the east, there's more showery rain coming in from the west as we go through Thursday and into Friday.
00:21But looking at the details for the rest of today, and yes, some showers are continuing across parts of Scotland, down the western side of England and Wales,
00:29maybe a few for Northern Ireland, but most places will have a largely dry night with some often clear skies.
00:35And as a result, things could turn a little fresh for some of us, not especially so.
00:39Some rural spots may just about dip into single figures, but generally towns and cities holding up around 14, 15 Celsius, that kind of thing.
00:47And so then it's a largely bright start to the day tomorrow for many, but notice towards parts of Northern Ireland, southwest England, across Wales,
00:55that weather system that I highlighted at the start, that's already going to be pushing its way through.
01:00And it's going to make its way northeastwards as we go through the morning and also into the afternoon.
01:04Now, it's a relatively narrow band of rain, but it could be quite intense and it's not moving that quickly.
01:11So we could see some locally high rainfall totals building up, maybe 15, 20 millimeters in a few spots,
01:17if you get some torrential downpours in association with it.
01:20It does make its way across the whole country, but worth noting, it breaks up and turns a bit more showery across parts of the south, southeast by the time it reaches here.
01:29So a bit more hit and miss as to whether or not you'll see any of that more persistent rain.
01:34But most places, not everywhere, most places will see a spell of some heavy rain.
01:39And there will be some gusty winds in association with this as it pushes through.
01:43Something a bit drier, brighter following in behind, also scattering of showers for Northern Ireland.
01:48And then looking at the temperatures for tomorrow, not quite as high as today.
01:52They're down a few degrees and it's going to feel a bit fresher too when we get that rain, when we get those gusty winds making their way in.
01:59That front then does clear away eventually towards the northeast as we go through the evening tomorrow.
02:04But it takes a little while to clear away from the far east of Scotland, even some cloud clinging onto the far southeast of England as well for a little while.
02:12And then we get more showers coming into western parts across Northern Ireland and down the western side of Scotland, England and Wales.
02:19Meanwhile, central and eastern areas turning largely dry with some clear skies.
02:23So a fairly similar night to tonight really in many respects, but perhaps a slightly bit fresher.
02:29So temperatures more widely getting close to single digits.
02:32Rural spots perhaps dropping into mid-single figures in a few places away from the cloudier, blustery west.
02:39And then Thursday, it's a showery day across western parts in particular.
02:43Some blustery winds mixed in with those showers.
02:46Some of them could be a bit heavy, could be a bit thundery at times.
02:49And they'll always be relatively frequent.
02:51Further east, a drier, brighter start.
02:53But a few showers will be pushing their way in here, becoming more widespread as we go through the afternoon.
02:59And with a fair bit of cloud and some showery bursts, those blustery winds, temperatures, if anything, look like they'll be a degree or so down compared to tomorrow for many of us.
03:07Still just about getting into the low 20s in a few places towards the east in particular, where the sunnier skies linger for that little bit longer.
03:15Then as we go towards the end of the week, we are still going to have low pressure across us.
03:21So more showery bursts of rain could be some longer lasting spells at times.
03:24But it's into Saturday when there's the potential for an area of low pressure to track somewhere around the south of the UK.
03:30And if this comes off, then it could bring some particularly wet and also quite windy weather across parts of England and Wales as we go through the first half of the weekend.
03:39So that's definitely something that we need to keep an eye out for.
03:42Anna will be talking more about that in this week's deep dive.
