Some showers around this afternoon, with some isolated heavy downpours. Otherwise, plenty of sunny breaks with some scattered cloud. Generally drier and sunnier with warmer temperatures in the east and south. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 26/08/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Alex Burkill.
00:00Hello, very good day to you. Plenty of sunny breaks today but also plenty of showers to watch out for as well.
00:06Some of them could be a little bit on the heavy side.
00:08Let's start off though looking at what's currently happening out in the Atlantic because there is a system that's developing.
00:14I mean, for a start, there is a what was Hurricane Aaron that's now tracked across the Atlantic.
00:19It's a relatively deep but also quite flabby low towards the northwest of the UK.
00:23And it's this that's driving the change to something more unsettled that we're seeing at the moment.
00:28And then we have this system here, a frontal system that's going to push in as we go through tomorrow, bringing some heavy, perhaps even thundery rain.
00:36But looking at the details across the UK, and yes, there are some showers around.
00:41There was a spell of slightly more persistent rain that pushed eastwards earlier on in the day.
00:45That's now clearing away. Nonetheless, could be a bit more cloud and a few spots of rain across parts of East Anglia for a little time this afternoon.
00:52Otherwise, the big talking point is really the fact that there will be sunny breaks.
00:56Yes, but plenty of those showers, especially across northern and western parts, across parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland in particular.
01:03Some of those showers are likely to be quite heavy.
01:06Further south and east, a greater chance of avoiding them.
01:08And in fact, many places are going to stay largely dry.
01:11And with the sunshine across eastern parts in particular, still feeling very warm indeed.
01:15Temperatures peaking in the mid, possibly even high 20s for some places.
01:19Further west, a fresher feel than it was over the long weekend.
01:24And temperatures here just about scraping into the low 20s for some places.
01:28So slightly cooler than it has been recently.
01:31Later on through the evening, there will still be some showers across northern and western areas.
01:35But most places will see the showers dropping out, decreasing.
01:39And so it is going to be dry for many of us with some clear skies.
01:43However, towards the far west-southwest of the country, we are going to see that system that I highlighted earlier starting to push its way in,
01:51mainly across parts of Northern Ireland, but also just about reaching the far southwest of England and Wales.
01:56So strengthening winds and some heavy, showery rain arriving as we head through towards dawn as well.
02:02Further east, where we stay with the often quite dry and clear weather, it is going to be a little bit fresher than some recent nights perhaps.
02:09But most towns and cities holding up in double digits around mid-teens for many places.
02:14A few rural spots may just about drop into single figures perhaps.
02:18And then through tomorrow, we are going to have this band of heavy and at times thundery rain making its way eastward across most parts.
02:26There will be some gusty winds on this as well, so pretty unsettled, but it's going to move through relatively quickly.
02:33As a result, the more unsettled weather shouldn't last anywhere for any particularly long period of time.
02:38That being said, we could see some relatively high rainfall totals building up.
02:42We're talking 15, 20 millimetres perhaps.
02:44And whilst this is coming in a relatively short period of time, it is going to be some welcome rain for many places.
02:50Lots of gardeners, farmers have been cooling out for some wet weather for quite a while.
02:54As that system pushes its way eastwards, we will see something a bit drier, brighter following in behind, but also a scattering of showers across western parts too.
03:03With this then, things are going to be a little bit fresher tomorrow.
03:06Temperatures down several degrees across eastern parts compared to today.
03:10And whilst in the west, they're going to be similar, maybe a degree or so down.
03:14Obviously, when we get that wetter, windier weather coming through, that is going to make it feel a fair bit cooler.
03:19That system does eventually clear away towards the east as we go through the evening.
03:25But still, some heavy bursts of rain affecting some eastern parts of England and also the northeast of Scotland for a little while yet.
03:31But drier, clearer weather following.
03:33However, that drier, clearer weather doesn't really paint the picture for the rest of the week.
03:37It is going to be markedly more unsettled than it has been recently.
03:40Quite an autumnal feel to the last week of meteorological summer with spells of rain or some showers for most of us.
03:49All of it is coming in from the west.
03:50We have quite a mobile pattern and so it's western areas where we're going to get the wettest weather.
03:55And do watch out, we could have some strong, gusty, blustery winds at times, particularly on Saturday.
04:00That's something that we're keeping an eye out for at the moment.
04:03But for more information about that, check out the deep dive, which Honor will be bringing to you later on.
