이재명 대통령이 한미정상회담 당시 도널트 트럼프 미국 대통령이 방명록에 편하게 서명할 수 있도록 의자를 빼줬으나 앉지 않은 것에 대해 “경상도 사람의 예의”라고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.
 
강훈식 대통령비서실장은 지난 29일 MBC 뉴스데스크에 출연해 한미정상회담 비화를 전했다.
 
강 실장은 이 대통령의 회담 태도가 ‘의자 끝에 허리를 꼿꼿이 세우고 계속 눈을 맞추는 게 굉장히 신경을 많이 쓴 듯 하더라’는 진행자의 언급에 “그 뒤로 왜 의자를 빼줬는데 앉지 않았냐고 (이 대통령께) 여쭤봤다”면서 “본인(이 대통령)께서 ‘경상도 사람의 예의 같은 거’라고 표현하셨다”고 말했다. 이 대통령은 경북 안동이 고향이다.
 
강 실장은 “한국식 예의일지는 모르지만 트럼프 대통령도 우리가 굉장히 정중하게 정상회담에 임하고 있다는 것에 대해 느꼈을 거라고 생각한다”고 말했다.
 
정상회담 직전 도널드 대통령이 자신의 소셜미디어(SNS)에 “한국에서 숙청 또는 혁명(Purge or Revolution)이 일어나는 것처럼 보인다”고 적은 글과 관련해 강 실장은 “회담 3시간 전에 글이 올라와 저희도 놀랐고 당연히 충격적이었다”고 했다.
 
다만 “이 대통령은 그것과 무관하게 본인 일을 계속 진행하셨다”며 “저는 그때 30분 후에 백악관에서 수지 와일스 비서실장과 면담이 예정돼 있어서 (면담을 위해) 자리를 이석했는데 대통령은 되게 담담하셨다”고 밝혔다.
