Back in the days of the Roman Empire, a small donkey is born with VERY long ears, that keep getting him into trouble. When his owner throws him out of the stable in disgust, his mother sacrifices her life to save him from a blizzard. And, guided only by his guardian cherub (Tilly), he has to find his rightful place and destiny, somewhere on the road to Bethlehem.

00:00Santa doesn't have to worry. I'll watch over his stable till he gets back, like I do every year.
00:19Christmas Eve, quietest night of the year up here at Santa's castle.
00:25That's because Santa and all the reindeer are off doing their big thing.
00:30But as for Santa's donkey, well, it's sort of a night off.
00:34What? You never knew Santa had a donkey? Why, sure.
00:40Who do you think pulls Santa's snowplow? And who totes all the toy carts from one place to the other?
00:46Me, Spielto. Come on, I'll show you around.
00:52Well, this is it. Not very fancy, but we call it home.
00:57Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen.
01:03Pretty, isn't it? The animals on Christmas tree.
01:07Compliments of Mrs. Santa.
01:10The elves made that pretty little manger themselves.
01:13Just about the way the real one looked, I guess.
01:16Except for the donkey.
01:18They made him all wrong. He didn't look like that at all.
01:21How do I know? Why, that donkey was my ancestor.
01:26Nestor. Yes, sir. Nestor.
01:29The long-eared Christmas donkey.
01:33Elves are supposed to carve me a more accurate version.
01:36But you know them elves.
01:39Oh, well, come on, I'll show you the rest.
01:42Here's where Comet sleeps, and Cupid, and Donner, and Blitzen.
01:49And, of course, you all know this feller.
01:51Everyone knows about Rudolph.
01:55Our fleet-footed friend from the north.
01:59Who lights Santa's way through the darkness.
02:03As he drives his sleigh back and forth.
02:09But there's someone else we should mention.
02:13If we want the whole story told.
02:19He carried the first gift of Christmas.
02:23More precious than diamonds or gold.
02:27Oh, well, come on, I'll show you the rest.
02:57You want to know more about Nestor?
03:17Can't say I blame you.
03:19Well, it all happened a long, long, long, long time ago.
03:25When the great Roman Empire stretched from the land south of the Mediterranean
03:29to the wild countries of the North Sea.
03:35And it was in these frigid climes in a crude stable on the farm of Olaf,
03:39the donkey breeder, that Nestor lived with his mother.
03:44Oh, no food for you, long ears.
03:46You don't earn your keep, always tripping over your ears and smashing things.
03:56There's nothing he can do.
03:59You can have dinner.
04:02You earn your keep.
04:04Come, Thor.
04:04There's enough for both of us, my dear.
04:09Oh, no.
04:10I'm really not hungry.
04:16Ears, Nestor.
04:18Those ears.
04:20Longest god-earned ears ever grew on a donkey.
04:23Yes, sir.
04:26From the day he took his first step, those ears got him into one pickle after another.
04:32Nestor was a donkey who seldom left or played.
04:37Cause no one ever used him in the stable where he stayed.
04:44Everybody teased him, and the other donkeys too.
04:49They said, look at little Nestor, there's nothing he can do.
04:56Look at little Nestor, he's got ears that drag the ground.
05:01They whispered as they mocked him, but he heard every sound.
05:08Nestor's heart was broken, and his eyes were full of tears.
05:13If only there was something he could do about his ears.
05:20Now, in the meanest part of the year, when the daylight was as short as the stub of a candle,
05:33it was the custom on the longest night of winter to hold a celebration.
05:38And this happy time was called the winter solstice.
05:42Simple gifts were exchanged.
05:44Nestor's mother gave him a bright pair of stockings Olaf's wife had thrown away.
05:48It was a beautiful time, full of peace and goodwill, while the others were even friendly to Nestor.
05:56Sorry if I made you feel bad, Nestor.
06:01This is the best day ever. I'll never forget it.
06:07And when the celebration was over, they all fell into a deep and contented sleep.
06:12Except for Nestor, who, tired as he was, was just too excited to go to sleep.
06:18Where are the blazes are they?
06:30What's happening? What's going on?
06:35The Emperor needs donkeys. Strong, young donkeys. Show them to me.
06:40This way, sir. I've got several fine coats.
06:46He was a soldier from the Imperial Roman Army.
06:50Beasts of burden were needed in the Southlands.
06:54Fine, young specimens.
06:56Aren't they?
06:57They'll do.
07:00You too.
07:01What's he doing?
07:12Taking us away.
07:15Away? No!
07:17Mama!
07:18Come back here, you.
07:24What the blazes?
07:26Those ears.
07:28They're so long, they drag the ground.
07:30You try to cheat the Emperor.
07:33You would sell him imperfect misfits?
07:37You can have him for nothing.
07:39Free.
07:40I'll teach you.
07:42I'll have them all for nothing.
07:46And you can keep little droopy ears.
07:54Forward, slaves.
07:55To the glory of the Roman Empire.
07:58You, look what you've done to me.
08:08No young donkeys.
08:10No silver coins.
08:12I'm a pauper.
08:16Blast you.
08:22See?
08:23You'll ruin everything.
08:26I'm done with you.
08:28Out.
08:31No.
08:33Nestor.
08:35My son.
08:37I don't care if the storm freezes you.
08:41Get out and never come back.
08:45Blast you.
09:04Oh!
09:12Nestor!
09:14Nestor!
09:17Nestor!
09:22Nestor, answer me!
09:24Nestor!
09:28Nestor?
09:32Mama?
09:34So cold, Mama!
09:37No more, my darling.
09:39Now we must be brave.
09:42Mm-hmm.
09:42Remember that.
09:44Whatever happens, you must be brave.
09:50Finding a sheltered spot,
09:52Nestor's Mama dug away the snow
09:54until she came to the winter grass underneath.
09:57Lie in there, Nestor.
09:59But Mama...
10:00Do as you're told, Nestor.
10:02Yes, Mama.
10:04The grass was cold and hard,
10:08but better than the icy snow.
10:09And Nestor's Mama covered his entire body with her own,
10:13except for...
10:15Ears, Nestor.
10:18Yes, Mama.
10:19By morning, the storm had gone.
10:25And as savagery often does,
10:27it left beauty in its wake.
10:30The good Lord sometimes works in strange ways.
10:34The love of Nestor's mother had saved him.
10:37But in saving Nestor,
10:39she had allowed the storm to take her.
10:41And she was gone forever.
10:50And now, Nestor was all alone.
10:58Well, Nestor was on his own
11:08But he survived that long winter
11:10Moving constantly southward
11:12Through the great dark barren forests
11:14Oh, my bother
11:19What's the use?
11:22What good am I anyway?
11:23With these stupid ears
11:25Huh?
11:28It was then that Nestor's ears
11:31Which were as sensitive as they were long
11:34Heard the first whispers
11:35A little girl?
11:43No, you couldn't be a real little girl
11:46You'd be frozen
11:47Are those wings?
11:50Yes, wings
11:52Do you like them?
11:54Who are you?
11:55It's not who I am
11:56It's what I am
11:57Do you know what I am?
11:59A cherub
12:00Hmm?
12:01Cherub?
12:02We're supposed to be inspiring
12:04You are?
12:06Angels inspire humans
12:07And cherubs inspire animals
12:09You do?
12:11But oops
12:11I fell off a cloud and spoiled everything
12:14My name is Tilly
12:16Now then
12:18Now then
12:18It's up to me to guide you
12:19And see that you do what you're supposed to do
12:22What am I supposed to do?
12:26Your ears can do a wondrous thing
12:28No other ears can do
12:30The sounds they hear will guide you
12:32On a path that's straight and true
12:34And you will save another
12:36As your mother once saved you
12:38I don't think these silly ears can do anything wondrous like you say
12:43But I guess if that's why Mama did what she did
12:46I should follow you
12:48That's right
12:49Come on
12:50But where are we going?
12:52Oh
12:53Oh, I can never remember names
12:56Wrote it on my wing
12:58Bethlehem
13:00Bethlehem?
13:02Where's that?
13:03Far away
13:04Across many lands
13:06And over the sea
13:07But I'll get you there
13:09Aw
13:10I don't want to go that far away
13:12He wants you to
13:15You know
13:16Oh
13:18Mm-hmm
13:19Come on now
13:21And so they started off on their long, long journey
13:25Nestor could tell Tilly was a real friend
13:28Because she was the only one who didn't make him cry
13:31But laughing at his ears
13:32Don't laugh and make somebody cry
13:38Don't make it rain from a sunny sky
13:46Sometimes a little holding in
13:48Sometimes a little holding in
13:52That's my escaping grin
13:56Though funny it may be
14:00We'll show some sympathy
14:02Don't laugh and make somebody cry
14:10A little love is not a lie
14:18If roads turned suddenly askew
14:24And someone laughed at you
14:28You'd never laugh again
14:32And you'd understand it then
14:35Don't laugh and make somebody cry
14:46Don't laugh and make somebody cry
14:54Don't laugh and make somebody cry
14:56That's something you can't
14:57That's something you can keep in mind
15:00That's something you can keep in mind
15:01That's something you can keep in mind
15:02Next time that's your find
15:04You've made somebody cry
15:05You've made somebody cry
15:07Don't make somebody cry
15:11Don't laugh and make somebody cry
15:19And here we are
15:25Is this Bethlehem?
15:28Almost
15:28Why don't we go all the way there?
15:31Oh, it's not time yet
15:32You are to stay here until it's the proper time
15:34How will I know?
15:36You'll know
15:36Goodbye for a while
15:38Where are you going?
15:41Home
15:41Ah, Nestor was on his own again
15:48He was taken in by a desert merchant
15:51A dealer in animals
15:53And brought to a stable
15:54Filled with camels and donkeys
15:56But he was so funny looking
15:58Nobody wanted to buy him
16:00Yeah, it was the same old story
16:03Nestor was the donkey
16:06Who seldom laughed or played
16:09Cause no one ever used him
16:13In the stable where he stayed
16:16All the camels teased him
16:19And the other donkeys too
16:21They said, look at little Nestor
16:25There's nothing he can do
16:28Look at little Nestor
16:31He's got ears that drag the ground
16:33They whispered as they mocked him
16:37But he heard every sound
16:40Nestor's heart was broken
16:43And his eyes were full of tears
16:46If only there was something
16:48He could do about his ears
16:52I'd sure like to get out of this place
17:00Aw, Tilly
17:01When will it be time to go to Bethlehem?
17:05Uh, Bethlehem?
17:08Huh?
17:09You wish to buy a donkey
17:11To take you all the way to Bethlehem?
17:14I have many fine specimens
17:17Come
17:18One dark night, two strangers
17:24Gave Nestor a surprise
17:27They chose him from all others
17:30For they loved his gentle eyes
17:33The man was called by Joseph
17:36And Mary was his bride
17:39She needed help to Bethlehem
17:42And Nestor's back to ride
17:46Him?
17:52You actually want him?
17:57Is he for sale?
17:59Is he for sale?
18:02Oh, he's not cheap
18:05Long ears are all in style this season, sir
18:10Come, Joseph
18:11We have not much money
18:13But Mary
18:14You are heavy with child
18:16You cannot walk
18:17Oh, take him
18:21A gift
18:22He's yours
18:24Oh, thank you, sir
18:25May God bless you
18:28Now, what made me do that?
18:35And Nestor, who just a minute before
18:38Was about to give up
18:39Suddenly had the strength
18:41To carry Mary
18:41All the way to Bethlehem
18:43They traveled through the desert
18:47But hadn't gone too far
18:50When winter clouds
18:52No longer let them see
18:55Their guiding star
18:57It was a terrible sandstorm
19:03Nestor realized he could save himself
19:06By bolting and running for shelter
19:07But then his ears
19:09His very special ears
19:11Heard
19:11Whispers?
19:14Tilly!
19:15That little poem of hers
19:17Your ears can do a wondrous thing
19:20No other ears can do
19:22The sounds they hear will guide you
19:24On a path that's straight and true
19:27And you will save another
19:30As your mother once saved you
19:33I will guide you now, Nestor
19:34That voice
19:38Not Tilly
19:40You're
19:41You're
19:43Listen to the angels
19:46And follow
19:47I will follow them
19:50Mother
19:51You'll hear a choir of angels
19:56Follow the sound of the angels
20:00Nestor had a secret
20:12Only he could hear the sound
20:15As the angels gave directions
20:18To the ears that dragged the ground
20:22And guided by the angels
20:23He gently carried Mary through the blinding storm
20:26His great ears protecting her
20:29And the precious miracle within her
20:31And as suddenly as it came up
20:35The storm went away
20:36And when the desert sand settled
20:39Look
20:40Bethlehem
20:44You've gotten us through
20:46Thank you
20:47Thank you, little donkey
20:49Nestor took them right into Bethlehem
20:53Crowded with the multitudes
20:55Come for the Roman census
20:56And as you know
20:58All the ends were full up
20:59Nestor didn't know what to do
21:01And then he thought back
21:03And he remembered how warm and beautiful
21:06A stable could be for a baby
21:08When his mother was close
21:09And so it was that Nestor
21:15Found the manger where they stayed
21:19Where kings and wise men
21:22Bowed before a baby where he laid
21:26Mary bore our Savior
21:30Nestor brought them there
21:33A gift of love from God above
21:38For all the world to share
21:41Here's Nestor
21:45And when Nestor returned
21:56He really was a hero
21:58Look at little Nestor
22:01He's got ears that dragged the ground
22:04They shouted as they praised him
22:07And his friends all gathered round
22:10Nestor's heart was happy
22:13And his eyes held no more tears
22:16Now all the world knows Nestor
22:19For his laughter and his ears
22:22Though Rudolph I just love you
22:25I know you'd want it said
22:28I know you'd want it said
22:28Nestor's ears are lovely
22:31As a reindeer's nose is red
22:34So children if you're happy
22:37When you trim your Christmas trees
22:40You might thank a little donkey
22:43Whose ears hung to his knees
22:46Look at little Nestor
22:54He's got ears that dragged the ground
22:57They shouted as they praised him
23:00And his friends all gathered round
23:03Nestor's heart was happy
23:06And his eyes held no more tears
23:09But now all the world knows Nestor
23:12For his laughter and his ears
