00:00I'm here with Cody Johnson. Now Cody congratulations. Thank you. You're being
00:04awarded tonight for winning the Spirit Award. Now tell me what does this award
00:08mean to you? Any award means something but when you read the description of it
00:13which I just did today for being awarded for someone that goes their own path and
00:19represents country music in a positive manner and it was inspired by Merle
00:23Haggard which is one of my all-time greatest heroes so feeling pretty
00:27honored tonight. That's huge and you've covered some of Merle Haggard's music
00:31you know like if we make it through December but what is your favorite song
00:36of his and why? I know them all that's the thing is I know every one of them. So this
00:42award means a lot to you. Yeah I probably have the most like that's probably the
00:46most artists songs I have on my phone playlist is Merle. My song to my little
00:51girl Clara is my favorite memory of all and for Corey it's the farmer's
00:58daughter so I mean there's there's a lot of them that we have. Okay that's so
01:02sweet especially because they're connecting you to your kids. Yeah. Alright so
01:05earlier this week you played the band together in Texas to benefit and help
01:11the flood victims in Texas and you sang a gorgeous version of How Great Thou Art.
01:15How important is it for artists to be a part of these kind of events and help
01:20their community because you're from Texas right? Right and that you know when
01:24Miranda reached out to me Miranda Lambert of course when she reached out to
01:27me it was an immediate yes. My wife and I personally had donated some funds to
01:33some different things and we don't talk about that a whole lot like I think with
01:36philanthropy it's better to just keep it to yourself but you know I have a I have a
01:41gift to sing and play and bring joy and happiness and healing to people through
01:46music so I felt it was my duty to go and play and I was very honored to be there it
01:50was a great event so hats off to you Miranda. And how is your family? Were any
01:55of them affected by the floods? No it was more in West Texas so but we have a lot
01:59of friends and a lot of family that were affected maybe not directly as far as
02:03like the loss of a family member but it was a it was a bad deal all around but one
02:07thing about Texans is we always band together. And I think that's a lesson our
02:11whole country can take right now like of banding together and that that's what's
02:15most important so I really appreciate your example in that. Luke Bryan is
02:19presenting to you tonight what kind of influences he had on you and your career?
02:24He's just watching his his rocket ship to stardom and to and to still kind of
02:28maintain there like even whenever he's not releasing music he's still very much
02:32relevant as Luke Bryan no matter what he's doing and he plays one hell of a golf
02:36game. Have you played against him? Yeah and I lost. Look out guys Luke Bryan
02:42he'll kick your trash all over the golf course but hey thank you so much and
02:46congratulations on tonight I hope you just have the most magical night. Thank you
02:49very much.
