00:01Hi everybody. Welcome back to Empower Field at Mile High. I'm Scotty Gaines.
00:05Despite winning by 21 points last week, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton
00:09had about 14 problems after the game and none of them had to do with what happened on the field.
00:15In other words, it's the preseason for everybody.
00:17Sean then later this week said that it's about 17 issues that he's having right now.
00:22Stuff like the fact that there was a Jazz Fest near their team hotel.
00:25Stuff like that. There's new interns and they're all getting everything warmed up.
00:28So, Steve and Ryan, you know what?
00:31These interns, the new guys on the Broncos are trying to figure it all out
00:34and we'll see if he has a shorter list of grievances this week.
00:38Coaches love that when you can win a game and still be angry and be able to coach up your team.
00:43That works out perfectly for Coach Payton.
00:45Back down to the sideline and Cynthia Freeland.
00:48Well, I can barely hear you because there's so much fun going on down here,
00:52but three takeaways from the last game that we want to have a look at.
00:54Number one, the 34 air yard touchdown connection between Jarrett Stidham and Trent Shurfield
01:01had the lowest catch probability in the game.
01:04It was sub-20%.
01:05That's great for chemistry.
01:07And as for Nick Benito, those four quick pressures,
01:09which means they happened in under 2.5 seconds.
01:12One of them turned you into sack and he has an average of 1.95 seconds.
01:16That is extremely fast.
01:17And my favorite stat of the whole game, the wide receivers, seven Broncos,
01:22had at least 6.3 yards of separation.
01:25And you know how many of the Niners, pass catchers did?
01:28Exactly zero.
01:30The big goose egg, Cynthia Freeland on the field.
01:33So we've got next-gen stats on this next-gen night.
01:37The gen being different, it's generation.
01:39All the young people here in the stadium tonight.
01:42Youth participation night tonight.
01:44Arizona won the toss, they will receive, and it will be a touchback.
01:49And the Cardinals will take over, first down and ten.
01:53We will not see Kyler Murray tonight.
01:56None of the starters expected to go for Arizona,
01:59much like the way the Broncos will play it.
02:02We will see the veteran Jacoby Brissett in his tenth year out of North Carolina State.
02:09They wanted to have a veteran just in case.
02:11Clayton Toon will see him the majority of the game tonight.
02:14He'll back up Brissett.
02:16Brissett's a pro quarterback.
02:17He's really built a phenomenal career, played in multiple systems.
02:20So he's looking to be successful tonight and show the rest of the NFL he can play.
02:24From the Arizona 35, Brissett out of the gun.
02:28Hands off to Michael Carter.
02:32Carter off the left side, able to pick up three.
02:34The Jordan Jackson first tackle of the night for the Broncos.
02:38Tonight's players to watch are sponsored by Empowered.
02:41Get good at money so you can be a little bad.
02:44Invest well at Empowered.com.
02:46Well, it starts with Clayton Toon.
02:47You're going to see him later on tonight at quarterback.
02:49And then Xavier Weaver.
02:50Shout out, Skull Buffs.
02:52See you, grad.
02:53And then Andre Bocelli.
02:54You've got to put him in there.
02:55You've got to play well if your name is Andre Bocelli.
02:57He's been around the block, too, as well.
03:00Some veterans in there for Arizona.
03:04Quick toss out to the right.
03:06Able to complete.
03:07It is Bocelli.
03:09And it looks like he has first down yardage.
03:12Needed the seven, and he got him.
03:14Check out some more players to watch.
03:17Just here by Empower on the defense for the Broncos.
03:20Justice for not really having an excellent camp.
03:22Probably his best camp as a pro.
03:24Jordan Jackson, Air Force Academy graduate.
03:26Made the first tackle of the night.
03:28And then Q Robinson.
03:29He gets better every time he touches the field.
03:32Cardinals have it.
03:33Just shy of midfield.
03:35Out beyond their 45-yard line.
03:40Carter stays in the backfield.
03:44Inside handoff to Carter.
03:46And he has met the backfield and swung around.
03:49Stopped back at the 40.
03:50Jonah Ellis.
03:52Big stop.
03:54Tackle for loss.
03:56Jonah Ellis coming off the bottom of your screen here.
03:5852.
03:59Fights through what they call traffic.
04:01Hits two different offensive players for the Cardinals.
04:04And then makes the tackle.
04:06What an excellent young player Jonah Ellis is turning out to be for the Broncos.
04:10We'll watch those backup spots behind Benito and Cooper tonight.
04:14The outside linebackers.
04:15Ellis had a pretty good game in Santa Clara, too.
04:19Made some plays.
04:19His father was our pastor for the Super Bowl 50 season.
04:24And Jonah Ellis had a fantastic career out of Utah.
04:26And has only gotten better every single opportunity the Broncos have given him.
04:30He plays the run, I think, better than any of the defensive ends on the roster.
04:34And he really gives you some depth behind Cooper and Benito.
04:36That's Hayden Conner, who is down for Arizona.
04:40Rookie center out of Texas.
04:43And a sixth-round draft pick.
04:44While he's being attended to, some of Ryan's keys to the game.
04:48Sponsored by Hyundai.
04:49Test drive a new Hyundai today.
04:51Only at your Colorado Hyundai dealers.
04:53First, you have to do it again.
04:55You may have had a great first preseason game.
04:57Felt real good.
04:58You get to the locker room.
04:58Coach says, you've got to do it again.
04:59Otherwise, it's a fluke.
05:00Or is it a fact?
05:02Next, start fast.
05:03This is something on both sides of the football that Coach Payton talked about.
05:06And you want to finish strong like they did last week.
05:08And lastly, each and every player on the field right now wants to secure their job.
05:13Go out and secure your job by playing well and focusing on the opportunity each down at a time.
05:17Whoa, whoa, whoa.
05:18Isn't something missing from that list you always finish with?
05:21Stay healthy.
05:22Healthy.
05:22You know, this is a big game.
05:23I know a lot of people say the starters aren't playing.
05:25But this is a huge game for your depth and how successful you will be in the NFL.
05:30So health is wealth and you've got to go and get your job.
05:34Connor goes off slowly for Arizona.
05:37Watch for that after the loss on the tackle for loss by Jonah Ellis.
05:42Cards are backed up.
05:43Second down and 15 from there at 41.
05:46Sincere Hainsworth has checked in, replacing Hayden Connor.
05:50And here's Percet to throw.
05:52Has good time.
05:53Pump to the left.
05:54And rolling to the right and throwing on the rod.
05:57And just behind his intended target, Wad and Xavier Weaver, the second-year player out
06:05of Colorado, looked like it was just behind him and Weaver could not hang on.
06:10Fantastic play call by the Cardinals.
06:11You've got the play action.
06:13Everybody bites.
06:14And then the tight end comes back in on the left of your screen to really give that corner
06:17to Percet.
06:18Just delivering the football on the run.
06:20Tough throw to make.
06:21Again, the preseason is where you want to get these kinks out.
06:23Really learn, okay, when I'm throwing on the run, I want to lead the receiver a little
06:26more.
06:27Third and 15.
06:28Let's see what the Broncos dial up here.
06:30Try to set up the screen and it's dropped.
06:33Looks like it will go incomplete.
06:35Tejon Palmer was the intended target for Jacoby Brissett.
06:39But the Broncos were ready for that and it's fourth down.
06:42The defense there stopped the run on that drive as well as forcing that punt coming up.
06:48That's total defense and you love seeing your twos get in there and do that early in the
06:52game.
06:53Looking at Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon.
06:56It is third year after great success.
06:58Defense coordinator with the Eagles.
07:01Now running things here for the Cardinals.
07:04Blake Gilligan is back to punt.
07:06Standing at his own 26.
07:07Courtney Jackson had four returns for touchdowns in college.
07:13They angle it away from him and that's a gorgeous punt.
07:17Will they spot it at the one or the two or the three?
07:21For all of you watching with your significant other, that's what you tell your significant
07:24other.
07:24Hey, this is what I did when I met you.
07:26I downed it inside the five.
07:28It's a 56-yard punt.
07:36First possession for the Broncos.
07:38They'll start from their own three.
07:40We knew Jared Stidham would start the football game at quarterback.
07:44What we weren't sure about would be handing off behind him and the rookie RJ Harvey is in
07:49their second round draft pick out of UCF.
07:52And he's getting a great experience right now in a backed up situation.
07:57So they want to see how the young rookie functions standing in his own end zone starting on first
08:02down.
08:04Both Stidham and Harvey begin in their own end zone on first down and 10.
08:10Cardinals bring some pressure out of the backfield.
08:13It's Harvey makes the catch and they will give him one yard on the play.
08:18He was belted immediately be Keaton Crawford, rookie out of Nevada.
08:23The empower players to watch on offense for Denver.
08:26Jared Stidham had a fantastic game.
08:27Only one in completion last week.
08:29Pat Bryant, excellent sure hands and separation.
08:32And Blake Watson, this young man, is doing fantastic things with the opportunities in the
08:37football on the run and pass game.
08:46Off the play action.
08:47Stidham rolling to his right and throwing.
08:49There's Evan Ingram down the sideline for the big game.
08:54Ingram is still running well into Arizona territory.
08:59So much for the ones not going tonight, including number one, Evan Ingram for 58.
09:06Well-designed pass play from Jared Stidham.
09:09He's going to come across the field here, catch the ball.
09:12Look at the block, too, by Franklin, giving him some space.
09:15And here's what I love.
09:16He keeps going.
09:17Evan Ingram is going to be the eighth fastest tight end to get 500 catches in his short career.
09:22He is explosive.
09:24He is sure-handed.
09:25He is a piece on this offense the Broncos have not had the last five years.
09:29I thought you told me the starters weren't playing tonight.
09:31I didn't tell you anything.
09:32That's what Coach said, and you never trust a coach in the preseason.
09:34Got it.
09:35But that might be enough to get him out of there.
09:38Ingram's done for the night.
09:39That's all we need.
09:39Stidham rolling away from trouble.
09:41Throws wide open.
09:42It is caught.
09:43There's Pat Bryant.
09:44Makes a man miss, and he's inside the 10.
09:47The explosive start for the Broncos' offense.
09:50Good for 29 more yards.
09:52You see this play again.
09:53It's the separation that creates the catch.
09:56Pat Bryant told us in production meetings he watches film on Michael Thomas and how he had success in this offense.
10:01But he's coming across, he gets some depth, and then gets up, feel a little, ooh-oh, made one player miss.
10:07That's what you want to see at a young rookie wide receiver.
10:09Give it to Harvey straight ahead, and he's swung into the end zone for the Broncos' touchdown from eight yards away.
10:16Man, that was quick.
10:19How about a 97-yard scoring drive for the Broncos to open the football game?
10:24It started on their three, and they ended with six.
10:27Fantastic read right here by R.J. Harvey, and that's the experience he wants.
10:32I want to get it backed up, and I want to get it near the goal line to get that in the same drive.
10:36That is fantastic for the coaches to get the evaluation and for the confidence of R.J. Harvey.
10:41He's still learning.
10:42He can play at the highest level in the NFL.
10:45Will Lutz.
10:48Extra point.
10:50He made them all last year.
10:5246 of 46, and he's perfect on the young night tonight.
10:56And so is this Broncos offense.
10:58Wow.
10:597-0, Denver.
11:00Denver.
11:007-0 lead.
11:08Wow, quick strike offense.
11:09And they started with a big play from Evan Ingram, and nobody follows the explosive play of 10 yards or more more in the NFL than Sean Payton.
11:17He wants that, and this is that long run and catch, over 50 yards, and then just another dart from Jarrett Stidham.
11:25He might be, the Broncos might get some trade calls about him.
11:28Boy, he's playing, and R.J. Harvey started with it backed up, got to finish and put it in.
11:33There's nothing like that in the preseason with a young rookie running back.
11:36Some of them are screaming.
11:37Some of them are crying.
11:38It's a great moment for their career.
11:40Amari DiMarcato from inside the 10 left sideline.
11:46And he'll be bumped out in front of the Cardinals bench.
11:50Time to meet the player, sponsored by Ford.
11:55Check out the official trucks and SUVs here at Denver Broncos.
11:58Scotty Gange.
12:0023.
12:01That guy, Evan Ingram, in 2023 became the eighth tight end in NFL history with 100-catch season.
12:06He had 114 receptions, four touchdowns for the Jags that season.
12:10And you might see this year he's wearing number one.
12:13It's interesting because he's the first tight end to do that since 1973.
12:16And, oh, yeah, he had a 58-yard catch and run today.
12:19You know, a few weeks ago, Evan told me that he wants to be Bo Nix's yes-man.
12:23He's Jarrett Stidham's yes-man tonight.
12:25And right back, the Cardinals come off the play action.
12:29Brissett able to throw and goes to his tight end, Travis Vogelec.
12:35You will not see, or at least we don't expect to see, Trey McBride.
12:38A lot of people would love to see him start tight end for the Cardinals.
12:42Local product, grew up in Greenlee, Colorado.
12:44Played his high school football at Fort Morgan.
12:51Short three-yard gain.
12:53Brings up a second down and seven.
12:57Brissett's out his center.
12:59Got right here.
13:02Make sure that Jonah Ellis might get on this play.
13:08Pressure comes up the middle.
13:09It's picked up nicely.
13:10Brissett throws, and it is caught.
13:13Coming across is Andre Bocelli for his second grab.
13:17That's good for 14 and a first down.
13:20He is singing tonight.
13:21Two catches already in the first quarter.
13:23And the problem there for defensively, you're in man coverage.
13:26So Jacoby Brissett just giving his receiver some space, putting it down low for he can go to get it.
13:31What a play for the Cardinals.
13:34Hard to stop if you're the Broncos defensively.
13:36Not going to see Nick Benito tonight.
13:38Hope to get him back soon at three stitches after a bone spur procedure on his foot.
13:45Give is to Michael Carter, and he'll get to midfield.
13:50Down to Cynthia.
13:50So we have to talk a little bit more about Evan Ingram because he led all tight ends in both receptions with 112 and yards, 957, from the slot over the past two seasons.
14:01Well, what does this mean for the Broncos?
14:03Oh, Sean Payton?
14:04Yeah, he uses tight ends from the slot 52.3% of the time, and that's the fifth highest rate in the NFL, which means maybe he's number one for your fantasy team?
14:13I like that idea.
14:14And it also might be his handicap in golf.
14:16Said he shoots a low 80s.
14:18If Cynthia's giving you free fantasy advice, you might want to take it, people.
14:23Out to Michael Carter for a pickup of two.
14:27Good pursuit for the Broncos there.
14:32Dondre Tillman among the players in the area.
14:37Again, Tillman behind Benito.
14:40Ellis, we've already seen, make plays.
14:41He's behind Cooper.
14:43Alex Singleton was back to full practice this week.
14:45Hope to see Drake Greenlaw next week.
14:48It's all coming together for this Broncos defense.
14:51Yep, and they got a young talent right here.
14:53And Q Robinson, this guy can get after the passing.
14:56Third and seven just across midfield.
14:58Eight minutes left, first quarter.
15:00Broncos is a 7-0 lead.
15:01Here's Percet.
15:02Steps up, fires, able to complete.
15:05And hits Xavier Weaver.
15:08Weaver able to pick up the necessary yardage to move the sticks.
15:12So another third down conversion for Arizona.
15:14That's good for 17.
15:16Clearly, Arizona watched the practice film as these two teams played against each other on Thursday.
15:21And they're dialing up some man beaters, as they call them.
15:24They know the Broncos are going to be in man because of their excellent corners.
15:27And that's where you get those deep drag routes and routes that really open up the field to give the quarterback a clear picture.
15:32First down and 10 from the 32 of the Broncos.
15:43Percet gives to Michael Carter.
15:45He has met in the backfield.
15:46Slowed down.
15:47Now he'll get across the line of scrimmage.
15:49Second effort for Carter, fourth-year player at a UNC, pick up a 5 on the play.
15:56Carter had tremendous success at North Carolina in college.
16:01And they're just being patient, a little wiggle-waggle, finding the crease.
16:05Justin Cernod able to bring him down eventually.
16:10Second down and 5.
16:13The 27 of the Broncos.
16:15This preseason crowd making some noise in a power field a mile high.
16:29Give us to Carter.
16:30Met in the backfield again.
16:33Broncos were all there right away.
16:36Tillman there on the spot.
16:38Jordan Miller was the first man into the backfield.
16:42Loss of 2 on the play.
16:43Tillman's second big tackle of this drive.
16:47You're having backups show up and stop the run at the line of scrimmage.
16:50That's ideal if you're the Broncos.
16:52Especially if you're DeAndre Tillman.
16:54You're having a night already early on.
16:56Everything you dreamt about last night is happening quick.
16:58And now you start believing in your capabilities.
17:01Tillman had two sacks in his NFL debut week 3 at Tampa a season ago.
17:06Here's third down and 7.
17:08But the number 29.
17:09They're going to run with it with DeMarcado.
17:12And he'll stumble forward.
17:14He'll be just short of the marker.
17:16Just over a yard shy.
17:18Picked up 6.
17:19Needed 7.
17:20And it's 4th down and 1.
17:22Looks like the Cardinals offense will stay on the field.
17:25They want this situation.
17:26A lot of things that fans miss in the preseason.
17:28Coaches want specific situations.
17:30They want to get a 4th down conversion on film.
17:32They want to know if their best 4th down call works in the preseason.
17:43DeMarcado stays in there.
17:45You can also sometimes get the fake call.
17:47They're going to take the delay of game.
17:495 seconds.
17:50Keeper by Brissett.
17:52And he'll move forward.
17:54The big bodied Jacoby Brissett.
17:566'4", 235.
17:58He'll fall forward and get the 1st down.
18:00Everybody wants to prove they're better at this than Jalen Hurts.
18:04I don't think anybody is.
18:05But Jacoby Brissett proving he can take this play and get you 2 yards.
18:09Small play.
18:10But a lot of confidence there for the Arizona offense off that conversion.
18:14Monty Osenford is the general manager of these Arizona Cardinals.
18:19And he was with the Patriots when New England first drafted Brissett.
18:23Back in 2016 in the 3rd round.
18:2510th play of the drive.
18:27Upcoming.
18:28Red zone fringe.
18:34Hand off to Carter.
18:35Finds a seam in the middle of that Broncos defense.
18:39It'll fall forward to the 16.
18:40And a pick up of 5.
18:42Really impressed with the play calling of the Cardinals.
18:44They're running to the weak side here.
18:46Something that coaches do not do enough.
18:48You hear us watching there at your facility.
18:50Run the ball weak once a quarter.
18:53So the Cardinals really calling some great plays to move down the field
18:57and continue this long drive against an expiring defense.
19:00Four minutes to play first quarter.
19:07Carter's back in there.
19:08Brissett wants to throw pressure up the middle.
19:14Lofts one to the end zone.
19:15It is caught for the touchdown.
19:16Simi Fajoko able to make the grab in the end zone.
19:2116-yard strike from Brissett.
19:24And an extra point away from tying the game.
19:27It's going to be on the right of your screen right about there.
19:29Jaquan McMillan a little bit behind the route.
19:34And then also you want your safety to be over there a little quicker.
19:37But that's Jacoby Brissett.
19:38He sees something.
19:38He fires.
19:39Excellent quarterbacks in the NFL make quick decisions.
19:42Jacoby Brissett can do that as he just did.
19:44Ten-year veteran.
19:45Brissett looked to the left too.
19:46He looked some guys off.
19:47He looked him off.
19:47He knew he had a young safety back there.
19:49Those are the little pieces.
19:51That's the art of playing quarterback.
19:53Chad Ryland on for the extra point.
19:56And boots it through.
19:59For a preseason game, this is pretty good.
20:01Got points.
20:01Pretty good first quarter.
20:03Points early.
20:05Brissett doing his thing.
20:07Matching Stidham.
20:08We're 7-all in Denver tonight.
20:12Mile High Stadium.
20:13Actually got to wear those jerseys in 2009.
20:16I think we beat the Cowboys.
20:17It's like, Broncos used to wear yellow?
20:20Don't pretend you don't remember beating the Cowboys.
20:23Sure you do.
20:24Everybody remembers beating the Cowboys.
20:25Yes.
20:28This is a good time to talk about Micah Parsons.
20:30You want to wait a little longer?
20:31Hey.
20:31Hey, somebody said Cowboys.
20:33I don't know.
20:33I'm ready when you are.
20:34I don't know if Micah's going to like it.
20:36I know Cynthia's ready as well.
20:37And that kickoff to the end zone.
20:39Touchback.
20:40The new rule, instead of the 30, they'll go to the 35 this year.
20:47Get a second series for this offense for the Broncos.
20:52I mean, the last series was rather quick.
20:54Yeah.
20:55Quarterbacks can come over and say, guys, I didn't even start sweating yet.
20:57Come on.
20:57Let's get out there.
20:58And sometimes you start calling more run plays and different plays maybe you're not as good at.
21:02But this team's trying to start fast offensively and defensively.
21:06So, Coach Payton wants to get his players used to scoring drive after drive.
21:10That's the expectation of that Parcells offense.
21:13You are expecting to score every time you get the ball.
21:16And remember, the offense struggled to start the game a week ago.
21:19Down 7-0.
21:22Had the intentional grounding on Bo Nix.
21:24Got him a safety.
21:25Made it 9-0.
21:26And then Denver would score 30 unanswered to win going away.
21:29R.J. Harvey's still in there.
21:31A flag comes in.
21:33Harvey gets out to the 40-yard line.
21:35Pick up a 6.
21:36We'll check the marker.
21:37It's our first flag of the game.
21:39Hands to the face.
21:40Defense number 96.
21:42Five-yard penalty is added to the end of the play.
21:45Automatic first down.
21:45Ron Torbert, our referee tonight.
21:48Flag on Elijah Simmons.
21:50Undrafted free agent at Tennessee.
21:53It's going to be right in the middle of your screen.
21:56Simmons right here.
21:56He's going to get that hands to the face.
21:58Nothing feels worse than that.
21:59Your throat's getting pushed into your chin.
22:01And then when they call this early in the game,
22:03the defensive lineman's hands drop about 6 inches for the rest of the game.
22:06So this is a gold call for the offensive line and the Broncos
22:09because now your defensive linemen are going to be much more controllable.
22:13Ball pushed out to the 46 of Denver on first down and 10.
22:17Harvey motions to the right.
22:18Stidham is looking to the left.
22:20Trying to go back shoulder.
22:22Wanted Pat Bryant.
22:24And that goes incomplete.
22:25Good coverage.
22:26Denzel Burke.
22:27Rookie out of Ohio State.
22:29A fifth-round pick for the Cardinals on the coverage.
22:32First incompletion for Jared Stidham.
22:35Pat Bryant did everything he could.
22:37Spinning in the air to catch a football.
22:39Rare you can see that.
22:41That's where if you're Pat Bryant, you learn,
22:42hey, I'm going to step my foot down just a little more.
22:45Give a little second pause.
22:46I got more time.
22:47So he's still working on the timing of balls getting to him
22:49at different parts of the field.
22:50But everyone on the Broncos loves what they see from him.
22:53Looks like we had a motion penalty against Denver.
22:57Well start.
22:59Offense number 79.
23:01Five-yard penalty.
23:02Second down.
23:04That's on Matt Parrott.
23:06Pat Bryant in college.
23:08He's a confident guy, right?
23:09He knows he has good hands, knows he can make all the plays,
23:12and wants to develop some consistency and be a star at this level.
23:17Well, he puts in the work before practice.
23:19He catches 19 footballs and puts them in a garbage can.
23:22A teammate I had that used to do that, Antonio Brown.
23:24He was a pretty good receiver.
23:25Yes, sir.
23:26And he says he practices over the shoulder, catches and everything.
23:28So he puts the work in to be great.
23:30What I love is he was one of the best players on his offense.
23:33He still couldn't be stopped in college.
23:34Stidham going sideline for Trent Shurfield, senior.
23:39Able to make the catch.
23:44But out of bounds.
23:45As it goes, incomplete.
23:48Jared Stidham here, second time to the left.
23:51He kind of hung the ball in the air,
23:52so that's a little technique that he's going to know.
23:55Okay, when I'm throwing left, I've got to lower it a little bit.
23:57I'm throwing a little high.
23:58So those are the in-drive changes
24:00that Jared Stidham's thinking about right now.
24:06Third and 15.
24:08Stidham's in a slump.
24:10Two incompletions, huh?
24:11Takes the snap.
24:12Cards rushing for pocket collapses.
24:14Stidham squeezes through, steps and fires.
24:18Hits Pat Bryant for first down yardage.
24:21Now there is a penalty marker on the field.
24:23We'll check it.
24:24But great athleticism by Stidham,
24:26and he knew where the line of scrimmage was.
24:29He has your broadcast in his ear.
24:31Stidham, holding, defense, number zero.
24:34Going to decline.
24:36Play results for the first down.
24:37And you love to decline a penalty on offense
24:40because you had success anyways.
24:41Let me get a couple looks at this.
24:43Stidham looking right, looking left,
24:45and watch him act like Houdini under there.
24:47Get away from me.
24:48And he stops, delivers a dime to none other than Pat Bryant,
24:52who's ready for the ball.
24:53Rare to have a rookie receiver looking back at the quarterback
24:56when he's scrambling like that.
24:58Stopping on a dime, throwing on a dime.
25:00This man's got 20 cents already.
25:02The penalty that was picked up, that was on Will Johnson,
25:05rookie out of Michigan, second-round pick.
25:07Cynthia Freeland reports that Johnson had an outstanding training camp
25:11for Arizona among their best players.
25:14Offense number 11, five-yard penalty, first down.
25:17And now all of a sudden it starts to feel like a preseason game
25:19with penalties piling up.
25:21Well, and this is now the second false start call on this drive.
25:24And it's something when I was at practice that I saw often.
25:27They're not really working that double cadence,
25:29that second cadence well, and you need that.
25:31We won the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning and Super Bowl 50.
25:34We were always changing the count.
25:35Andy Reid would change the count five times in the first 10 plays.
25:39That's a bonus for the offense.
25:41First down and 15 now after the marker.
25:46Tyler Bidet has checked in.
25:49And another flag.
25:51It's a laundry fest.
25:53Stidham throwing.
25:55Penalty will go against Arizona.
25:56Let's see if there's a second penalty.
25:58He's Michael Bandy, the intended target.
26:03Contact before the catch is a penalty.
26:05It's not allowed.
26:06There was a flag prior to that.
26:07Yep.
26:11What's strange, it's on both sides of the field.
26:18Now there's lobbying.
26:20You think there's lobbying in D.C.?
26:21You stand there when refs are trying to discuss who it was.
26:25There were fouls by both teams during the play.
26:27Illegal formation.
26:28Offense number 63 was not on the line of scrimmage.
26:31Offside.
26:32Defense number 70.
26:34Those penalties offset.
26:35Repeat first down.
26:39This is a clunky kind of drive for the Broncos.
26:42You're going to see 63 right here.
26:44He's going to get called for being too far in the backfield.
26:47You want to be able to break the line of the guard or the center's waistline.
26:51And then on the left side, de-tackle, they jump.
26:55But defenders, they're prone to making mistakes.
26:57That's why they play defense, Steve.
26:59Got it.
26:59But the first penalty there was on Arizona.
27:01That allowed the play to continue.
27:03They didn't blow it dead until after the fact.
27:05Give us back to Harvey.
27:09Picks up five on the plate.
27:12Harvey getting a little bit of welcome to the NFL from his coaches.
27:15Hey, great touchdown.
27:16Way to go on that 93-yard drive.
27:17You're back in.
27:18A lot of this is conditioning as well.
27:21You want your players conditioned to be able to come in and out of the game,
27:24hear different play calls, and execute.
27:26Harvey, three carries so far for 18 yards.
27:30Second down and 11 upcoming.
27:32Got Evan Ingram in the game.
27:34I have to start saying Ingram alert right here at the bottom of your screen.
27:38Here comes some pressure.
27:39It's picked up nicely by the Broncos.
27:41Stid of steps and fires in traffic.
27:43Pat Bryant goes up to make the catch.
27:46Inside the 30.
27:48Working on Keytrell Clark of the Cardinals.
27:51Good for 16.
27:54Looks like a young Cortland Sutton.
27:56Jarrett Stidham poised in the pocket.
27:59Moving his feet.
28:00Excellent technique.
28:01And then sure-handed Pat Bryant.
28:04The separation he creates with his brow.
28:06Only happens from studying film and working on the details.
28:09Stidham throws it sidearm.
28:12I think he was more throwing that away than anything else.
28:14Troy Franklin was in the neighborhood.
28:16But there was nothing going on right from the snap there.
28:19Sometimes you get a defensive end that just guesses, hopes that it's a pass play because
28:22they're so far out of position.
28:24But that's a good decision by Jarrett Stidham.
28:27Get it to the ground.
28:28Go to second and 10.
28:29We got the plays.
28:29Cardinals able to defeat the Chiefs in their preseason opener last week, 20-17.
28:36Broncos handled the 49ers 30-9 out in Santa Clara.
28:42Jaleel McLaughlin in the game for the Broncos now for the first time.
28:4580 seconds to play in the quarter.
28:49Stidham has time.
28:51Lofts one.
28:51Sideline is caught.
28:53Troy Franklin into the end zone.
28:56Touchdown Broncos.
28:57And a beautiful ball right on time from Jarrett Stidham again.
29:02Stidham throwing this before Franklin even was looking for the ball.
29:06So Jarrett Stidham just diagnosing the defense immediately.
29:11Looking to his right when he began.
29:13And then he said, uh-uh, and then floats it right in between the corner and the safety.
29:19And Franklin coming up with the big catch.
29:21He had a couple of big drops last year.
29:23Not so this year.
29:24Franklin is learning how to play the position and score points.
29:27Eight plays, 65 yards.
29:30Takes 239 off the clock.
29:32Will Lutz finishes things off.
29:34It was not artistic like the Broncos' first drive was.
29:39Resilient.
29:40But the result is the same.
29:41And it's seven more points for the Broncos.
29:44Lake Stavage is quarter number one.
29:52Tonight's coverage is sponsored in part by Ramos Law.
29:55Dr. Joseph Ramos, medical doctor and attorney.
29:57If you've been injured in an accident, visit RamosLaw.com.
30:01Ramos Law.
30:02What makes us different makes us better.
30:04And you'll see the Super Bowl 50 Lombardi trophy.
30:08Ryan at his hands.
30:09Fingerprints are still all over that.
30:11And they're going to honor that team.
30:1310th anniversary edition of the season.
30:15I can't wait to do it.
30:16We also have a teammate of mine that's playing for the Cardinals.
30:21But we'll get to that in a second.
30:24Cardinals on the return.
30:26DiMercato cuts to the middle.
30:2825-30.
30:29And out to the 32-yard line.
30:32Special team stop by Keydron Smith.
30:35Let's go back to the touchdown.
30:36What do you see there, Ryan?
30:36Well, it starts with Franklin being fantastic at his route running.
30:40And then Jarrett Stidham's going to look to his right.
30:42That's just going to freeze that safety long enough to create the throw.
30:47Jarrett Stidham gets back.
30:48Clean pocket.
30:49And now you see this safety is looking this way because of Jarrett Stidham.
30:53But Jarrett Stidham's going left with the ball.
30:56Franklin catches it and finishes it for six.
31:01Clayton Toon is in the game at quarterback.
31:0569 seconds to play in the first quarter.
31:08And Toon wants to throw with a man in his face.
31:12Throws it goes incomplete.
31:14Looking to work the sideline.
31:16Xavier Weaver was the intended target.
31:19Jacoby Brissette started the game.
31:21His last drive, he was 549 yards and a touchdown pass of his own.
31:26And a fourth down conversion as well.
31:29So Jacoby Brissette proven to his teammates that he can be counted on if needed in this season.
31:35You know, I think it's a trend around the NFL.
31:38I'm just looking at all the scores.
31:39Preseason week one, week two.
31:42We got 21 points in our game already.
31:44High scoring preseason games.
31:46Defenses want you to get comfortable and confident before they throw something new at you week one.
31:50Michael Carter is strung out by the Broncos defense for no gain.
31:56Met at the line of scrimmage all around.
31:58Jade Barron.
32:00The first man of the football.
32:02There is a flag down.
32:03One of the best tackling corners I have ever seen.
32:06Look at that relentless pursuit.
32:07He must be in jiu-jitsu or something.
32:09Wiping down the hands any way possible.
32:11Get him on the ground.
32:12That's rare to see from a corner, especially a rookie.
32:16That's quite a statement.
32:16You just made one of the best tackling corners you've seen.
32:19And I played with Champ Bailey.
32:20I played with some of the best.
32:21But Jade Barron, the first practice I went to, I was like, oh, who's number 12?
32:25Had to look at my sheet.
32:27Coaches say he listens in meetings.
32:29Rookies never listen.
32:30I didn't listen in meetings my rookie year.
32:32But he absorbs the meetings.
32:33And coaches told us he wants to be as good as Pat Sertan right now.
32:36But doesn't understand he has to learn the game a little more at this level.
32:40But he's doing an excellent job.
32:41Little patience to get to that Sertan level.
32:44Third down and nine from the Cardinals 33.
32:48Two and wants to throw underneath.
32:53Want to Demarcado out of the backfield.
32:56Forget about it.
32:56Nothing doing.
32:57Sertan was right there in case there was a completion.
33:01And it's fourth down.
33:03Defensively, doesn't matter who goes in there.
33:05Because they've got some fantastic draft picks.
33:08Starts with Jade Barron.
33:09We just talked about him.
33:10And also you've got Pat Bryant who's making some noise.
33:12I'm telling you, once this young man, Q Robinson, learns to jump the snap a little bit,
33:16he is going to be a terror.
33:18And this is my guy.
33:19This is my day one, I'll call him.
33:20All right, Steve.
33:21Caleb Loner, 6'7".
33:22Former basketball player.
33:24He's going to have some opportunities in the NFL.
33:27Here's the punt.
33:28Blake Gilligan gets it away.
33:30Courtney Jackson is back.
33:33Trying to make a play and make the team.
33:35Cuts in to 20.
33:35And to the 23-yard line.
33:38And Denver gets the football back after the first three and out of the football game with
33:45some 18 seconds left to play in the court.
33:47Talked to the special teams coach, Rizzi.
33:50He said, Courtney Jackson has explosive talent returning the ball.
33:53Had four returns for touchdowns in college.
33:56Had some coaching points afterwards after the first preseason game.
33:59Said, hey, get north and south.
34:00Get us five yards to a first down.
34:02That's all your job is.
34:04So right there, a little improvement from Courtney Jackson, the rookie out of Arkansas State.
34:09Denver football.
34:10First down and 10 from their own 23-yard line.
34:13And Stidham stays in there.
34:16Bidet in the backfield.
34:19See if we see R.J. Harvey again.
34:21Have not seen J.K. Dobbins yet.
34:24Handoff straight ahead.
34:25It's Bidet.
34:27Who last year was Beatty.
34:29And now is pronouncing his last name Bidet.
34:32I think we're all good with that.
34:34He had five rushes for 32 yards.
34:36And the preseason opener against the 49ers picks up three there.
34:39As the final seconds tick away of quarter number one.
34:44That was fast and fun.
34:46Not a lot to chew on.
34:48Now something to digest as well.
34:5014-7 Broncos after the first 15.
34:54Never have a hundred catches in a single season.
35:12His Broncos record stood for 40 years after he retired.
35:16He still ranks third among all Denver wide receivers all time.
35:20Receptions and receiving yards behind only Rod Smith and Demarius Thomas.
35:25And that year he had a hundred catches for the first time.
35:27But anybody did it.
35:28Did it in 14 games.
35:30Woo!
35:30He wasn't playing 17 or soon to be 18 games.
35:33Part of the inaugural Ring of Fame class in 1984.
35:38Lionel Taylor already honored inside the stadium here tonight.
35:42And now on your television screen.
35:44He was one of the guys that changed the game.
35:46A lot of coaches were getting mad at the Broncos.
35:48Why are you throwing it so much?
35:49This is the winged tee in the Veer days.
35:52Mr. Taylor making a name for himself and really changing the game of football.
35:56That's a great point.
35:57That was three yards in a cloud of dust, right?
35:59The Veer works every time.
36:01The Veer works every time.
36:02We're not throwing it around the yard.
36:04But to retire, bud, and still have your record stand for 40 years.
36:09On more games, too.
36:10The other players playing more games.
36:12Wow.
36:14Pat Bryant gets into the act.
36:16That young wide receiver would love to follow in the footsteps.
36:20Pat Bryant, so many catches already in this game.
36:23And catching every single one of them.
36:25Not one bobbling off of his hands.
36:27Now coaches are thinking, how can we get him involved with the ones?
36:30That's how well he's playing tonight.
36:32Give straight ahead, Bidette.
36:39This is a small play, but a huge play.
36:42Tell me why.
36:43Bidette.
36:43Because this is a play where it's broken at the beginning.
36:46There's somebody right in his face.
36:48But what does he do?
36:49He just digs in.
36:51Burrows like he's getting underground.
36:53Doesn't let someone.
36:54He had a forearm to the face.
36:55Who keeps going forward with a forearm to the face?
36:57That's toughness.
36:58That's determination and intent.
37:00Tyler Bidette continuing his production to prove he belongs on this roster.
37:03Do you think Bidette is the leader in the clubhouse as the third running back right now?
37:08I think he's the best.
37:09He always gets you production.
37:11Positive yards.
37:12Fights through runners as he's doing each and every play.
37:15And can catch the ball.
37:16One thing people forget about Sean Payton.
37:18He needs his running backs to catch the ball.
37:19And what that does is it forces the defense to be more vanilla because they have to play either run or pass.
37:24And they make a choice that's kind of in between.
37:26So a guy like Tyler Bidette can offer you some serious depth midway through the season if you get any injuries.
37:30And they trust him in pass pro as well on third down.
37:33Yep.
37:33You got to be able to pick up the blitz.
37:35As Jaleel McLaughlin was in the game making that last carry.
37:41And, you know, a guy like Bidette makes a play and then that puts the pressure on the other guys.
37:46That's why he wanted to get a first down.
37:48And McLaughlin did.
37:50Here's Stidham rolling to his left away from traffic.
37:54And he'll just sail that one out of bounds.
37:58Was getting pressure from Arizona Benton Whitley.
38:02Back up in the booth.
38:03Super Bowl champ from that Super Bowl 50 team, Ryan Harris.
38:07I'm Steve Levy here in Denver.
38:09How many running backs can you keep?
38:10Can you keep four running backs?
38:12Is that a possibility?
38:13I don't think you can do it without maybe, you know, somebody gets injured in the last preseason game or something like that.
38:19Three is a good number to keep.
38:21You can always find running backs.
38:22But right now, to me, Tyler Bidette is that number three back.
38:25RJ Harvey, J.K. Dobbins, and Tyler Bidette for now.
38:30Here's McLaughlin saying, get me on that roster, Ryan.
38:34Keep four backs.
38:36George Payton.
38:38McLaughlin rips off a big one for 35 yards.
38:42Jaleel McLaughlin has only continued to play hard and learn the craft of being a running back.
38:49Sees a mess to his left and takes off to his right.
38:51He has track speed.
38:52That's what they call that right there.
38:54And what I love right at the end of that play, he's spinning back into the field.
38:57He's not jumping out of bounds.
38:58He wants some more.
39:00Gives it right back to him.
39:01Why not?
39:02McLaughlin crashes down to the six.
39:05All right, Ryan, your rules for running backs to make this team.
39:12You're going to make the team.
39:13You've got to take care of the football.
39:15It starts with ball security.
39:16All the running backs have done an excellent job with that this preseason.
39:19You have to pick up the blitz.
39:20That's where Jaleel McLaughlin, as great as he can run the ball,
39:22you can't have him in on third down necessarily, a little bit of a smaller back.
39:26But Coach Payton loves 10-plus yard runs.
39:28Offensive linemen do, too.
39:29Not only do you get the first down, but now your defense is tired because they all had to chase him.
39:34And you have to catch the ball in this offense out of the backfield and be able to score points doing it.
39:39Maybe even further down the list off the page, it's a special teams component there, too.
39:44Here's Stidham rolling to his right.
39:46Hooks up with Bidet inside the five for a short gain of three.
39:52Can bring him third down.
39:54Watch this catch by Bidet, too.
39:56I mean, he is sitting down, squatting, staying available, though.
40:00Two feet inbound, staying available for his quarterback with scrambling.
40:04With a 300-pounder screaming at him.
40:09It's the rare third down and one from the two.
40:15Can still get a first down here, obviously.
40:19Seven seconds to snap it.
40:21With Caden pre-scoring, it is a tight end, throwing back of the end zone.
40:30And I don't know if that was miscommunication or he's throwing that out of the end zone.
40:34That's going to bring up fourth down.
40:35I think they knew they were going for it on fourth down, so they say, hey, here's the call.
40:39If you don't like it, throw it out of bounds.
40:40We'll go for it.
40:41But this is also a little bit where Jarrett Stidham can improve.
40:44When you're doing that play fake, I mean, I thought Tom Brady was one of the best at doing it.
40:48Peyton Manning, too.
40:49Their head was down.
40:50They were looking at the ball.
40:51They weren't acting like they were going to keep it.
40:52And just a little wrinkle like that can really sell the defense, bring them up, and open that up a little more in the end zone.
40:58Cardinals just ran a defender off late.
41:00Here we go.
41:01Fourth down and one from the two.
41:02Stidham out of the gun.
41:05Bunch formation.
41:06Bedé to his right.
41:07Gives it to him.
41:08Holds it.
41:08And the flag comes in.
41:12See if that'll change the play call.
41:15False start against the Broncos.
41:17And you're okay backing up if you're the Broncos.
41:19You don't want that by any means.
41:22But that's a third false start now.
41:23And so now what happens is the coaches go back after this game.
41:26They say, guys, I don't think we can go on any other count but one.
41:29That's terrible.
41:30When you're going against some of the defensive ends in the AFC West, you want to keep that defense guessing.
41:35Peyton Manning did it by saying, hey, if I say an ice cream flavor or turtle, there's no place.
41:39We go up there, chocolate, chocolate, Omaha Blue Goat.
41:42And then he'd finally give you the play so that way you didn't jump because there was no play to execute.
41:47I think that was the second flag against Alex Pelcheski so far.
41:5126-yard field goal attempt for Will Lutz.
41:55No doubt about it.
41:56Broncos settled for three instead of seven.
42:0217-7, Denver.
42:09Children's Hospital Colorado, the official Children's Hospital of the Denver Broncos.
42:14My old quarterback.
42:17Yeah.
42:18Sheriff.
42:19Peyton was out at the joint practice this past week.
42:23Had an opportunity.
42:24I thought that was cool.
42:25He was hanging out with Marvin Harrison, Jr.
42:27Yeah, I saw that photo.
42:28Yes, very nice.
42:29What, 103 touchdowns to his dad?
42:31But what a time to be there if you're Peyton Manning.
42:36Everybody who played the game, we want to see those joint practices because that's where guys are going to contest balls.
42:41They're playing like it's a real game.
42:43Now, what's different is you don't get that kind of long drive.
42:46You know, six plays, the twos are in.
42:48You know, eight plays, the threes are in.
42:49But that is where the most fierce competition happens in the preseason, in those joint practices.
42:54It's down to the field here, Cynthia.
42:56Cynthia.
42:56Cynthia.
42:56Cynthia.
42:56Cynthia.
43:01Bidet had five rushes, and all five of them were considered a success.
43:06So, at least four yards on first down, half the distance to second, and converting on third.
43:10Well, he followed that up with another one so far tonight.
43:13But Julian McLaughlin, he's three for three.
43:15And, oh, by the way, R.J. Harvey, he's two for three in that same metric.
43:19See, now you're starting to notice the separation.
43:23And you can see it on the sidelines.
43:24R.J. Harvey's relaxed and confident.
43:27Bidet is excited and happy.
43:29Those guys are separating themselves from the group.
43:31Rushes on that last drive.
43:33Six carries, 62 yards.
43:35Clayton Toon being chased and throws.
43:38Let's see.
43:39They'll call it a catch.
43:40It's Fajoko who makes the grab.
43:43He had the touchdown catch earlier.
43:46Jonah Ellis was the player chasing Toon out of the pocket.
43:49And Toon had to run for his life because Ellis almost got him and watched the pursuit.
43:54Almost got him twice on that play.
43:55That's the kind of effort Jonah Ellis gives every play.
43:58John A. Barron got up high to impact his vision on the throw as well.
44:04Saw the pick six in his mind.
44:07Broncos is swarming to the football so far here tonight.
44:11Off the play action.
44:13Trying to set it up.
44:14It's complete.
44:15Josiah DeGuarra able to make the catch for the Cardinals.
44:20A little short gain of two yards.
44:23Kyler Murray was incredibly healthy a season ago.
44:27And because of that, Clayton Toon was his backup all season.
44:31While he saw action in six games, only threw two passes all of last season.
44:35Cardinals will take that again if they can keep Kyler Murray healthy.
44:38And the problem there is Kyler Murray, listed at 5'10, has had some injury issues.
44:43Of course, a tough playoff game as well.
44:45But Kyler Murray is a guy who needs to change the narrative on his career and quick in the NFL.
44:49Third down and fourth.
44:52Out of the gun.
44:53Broncos rush five.
44:54Gets rid of it.
44:55Carter able to make the catch.
44:57And it's a good spot.
45:00We don't need a virtual measurement, I don't think.
45:02And it is a first down for Arizona.
45:05The Cardinals, they doubled their win total.
45:08Now, again, they were starting with four, but they doubled it to eight last season.
45:12And Jonathan Gannon's second year as a coach.
45:14And if they could double up or go north to eight, that would be a pretty impressive season.
45:18And that division's kind of open there, that NFC West.
45:21Yes, San Francisco's going to be there.
45:23Maybe healthy, maybe not.
45:25But that's a wide-open division.
45:26Two and out of the shotgun on first down and ten.
45:35Inside handoff, it's Di Mercado.
45:38And again, the Broncos just...
