00:00continue to swarm to that football Jackson and Skinner right there for the Broncos and the
00:06Broncos defense is showing you you're not going to be able to run the ball between the tackles
00:10against us all year so it's going to take some pitches to the edges it's going to take some
00:13backside cuts some trecanary as they can call it and that's all because of the coaching that this
00:18defensive staff is doing these players are in the right position they know what to do
00:22and coaches give them calls that let them play fast and you're not going to be able to throw
00:26against Pat Sertan nope and maybe not Jaday Barron either so I mean that's really something to watch
00:32for it's the defense that led the league in sacks last year and Drake Greenlaw and Hufanga Kalanoa
00:38Hufanga got to see him down there playing with his kids before the game what a moment for him
00:43that last play to Di Mercado another time they tried to run in the middle just can't do it the way the
00:51linebackers are filling into the gaps and one of the unique things about the Broncos D
00:56linemen they kind of float with their linemen until the very end it's a technique they're all
01:00using it's very effective midway point a quarter number two the Broncos enjoying a 17-7 lead
01:06here's third down and eight
01:08tune out of the gun Broncos rushing just four
01:15and unable to hook up the intended target for Hoko good coverage again for Denver Chris Abrams
01:25drain right there in the neighborhood denying Abrams drain really getting a positive play for him you
01:30always want your corner to be near the receiver even if they're going up to catch it
01:34and Abrams drain was right there
01:44Cardinals running somebody on late often happens in the preseason someone thinks their night's done and
01:49everybody's screaming at you all of a sudden on the sideline get your helmet on
01:52there's Blake Gillikin back to punt and he boots it in the air
01:58Jackson runs up lets it bounce into the end zone for a touchback 52 on the punt
02:07we're cheating Harris sponsored by first bank banking for good tonight we're asking which
02:24Denver Broncos quarterback holds the record for the most passing yards in a single game
02:30chat GPT is that cheating or no it's all cheating nowadays
02:34going to go Elway Payton that seems very obvious right over under I played with the quarterback
02:40I'm going to say you played with him you think you played with him I don't know I don't know
02:46it's going to be a Paxton deal told me not to cheat Greasy all right here we go Greasy can't
02:52be the answer every week by the way okay here's Blake Watson the ball carrier it'll pick up
02:56three yards on the play running out to his left Blake Watson has a lot of burst he gets the ball
03:02quickly he gets to that line of scrimmage fast you coach's time how fast a running back gets to the
03:08line of scrimmage in the same play and Blake Watson has to be one of the fastest on the team he looks
03:13like he's excited every time they give him the football the Broncos leading rusher last season
03:19had just 513 yards and that was Javante Williams net just will not do for this Broncos team Stidham tries to look
03:27off the defense at the screen Blake Watson makes spin to make at least one man miss and get out to about the 26
03:35yard line so the running game has obviously been an issue it's been six years since the Broncos had a 1000
03:42yard rusher and you want that because you want the defense expecting run and look that's the formula for
03:48winning championships you have to be able to run the football you want your linemen to be able to establish
03:52physicality you want your running backs to get used to the feel of the game Sean Payton's first two
03:58seasons in Denver he hasn't had a hundred yard rusher in a single game that's got to change this season
04:04here's third down and four here's Stidham pressure in his face unloads across the middle Lucas Kroll and
04:12we'll see where they spot him I think he's just short of that 30 which was the line to gain and they're
04:19saying fourth down I love that Jarrett Stidham's looking to the sideline like are we getting to
04:23play here are we punting I mean that's the preseason for you yeah you're gonna get a freeze
04:28here it's just gonna come over the right guard that's where the pressure's gonna come it's pretty
04:32immediate and so with the swim move Jarrett Stidham knows he's gonna get hit throws it gets his arm
04:37out of the way so he doesn't break a pinky that is professional quarterback play
04:41first three Denver possessions resulted in points first time the punting unit has come on and here's
04:50their 24 year old rookie punter Jeremy Croshaw and a flag comes in the air as the puck goes in the air
04:57and DJ Dallas with a ton of green in front of him waves it down for the fair catch immediately
05:03and we'll check the marker DJ Dallas it might have been play for him to make the team he knows it
05:11it's a 48-yard punt for now
05:17illegal formation by the kicking team number 59 lined up in the backfield that five-yard penalty
05:27we added to the dead ball spot first down Arizona that's on Garrett Nelson that screams preseason
05:36right illegal formation on a punt they rarely call that in the regular season two we'll be back
05:41did you play with Jake the Snake by any chance no here's the answer to tonight's Broncos trivia
05:52question sponsored by First Bank banking for good we asked which Broncos quarterback
05:57holds the record for the most passing yards in a single game October 31st 2004 Jake Plummer
06:03threw for 499 yards against the Atlanta Falcons 31 of 55 four touchdowns three picks that's the 26th
06:12highest total in NFL history I love that four studies three picks he was slinging it but one of the best
06:18players for former Broncos he makes sure he contacts all of us did a huge mental health study this past
06:25offseason Jake Plummer a captain of the alumni very nice keeping it in the family
06:31quick out to J. John Palmer first year player out of UAB picks up six Broncos had pressure right up the
06:41middle the Clayton Toon's face Broncos defensive line multiple players getting after the quarterback and
06:48that has an effect maybe they don't get Clayton Toon down right now but he is trying to think faster
06:52release the ball quicker and that's when mistakes happen saw Lavelle bail he's had an unbelievable
06:57training camp as well three straight tackles as I counted it here on defense thought we're gonna let
07:03Cynthia handle the math no you're gonna you're gonna dive in there taking chances left and right
07:07second down and four here's Toon to throw has time lost one deep deep shot and it goes incomplete
07:14just beyond the outstretched arms of Xavier Weaver there is a flag on the play Damari Mathis defense
07:27number ninety six five yard penalty automatic first down so Mathis had the coverage wanting step for
07:34step with Weaver and Yoma was Rick a was flagged what I love is Mathis has his hand on the shoulder pad on top
07:44instead of grabbing the back of the jersey they're gonna call it every time they see jersey but if a guy's running you have your hand on their shoulder pad it's kind of hard to tell whether you're holding them back or not so that's expert defensive back play by Damari Mathis
07:57was Rick a likely in a battle to stay on this roster with Jordan Jackson penalties will not help that cause is a huge huge player six six three twenty just doesn't play like it much he's got to get that fixed here pretty quickly in this game in the third preseason
08:14was Rick a remember came out of college involved in the gambling issue got suspended for a whole season and the Broncos stuck with him and there were a handful of players who got wrapped up in that gambling suspension and not many of those players are still with their original draft the team so was Rick a trying to pay back the Broncos now by playing well and making this club second down and ten a lot of loyalty shown there by the organization here's to another run rolling
08:44running away running away running away from Ellis he's had these Cardinals on the run all night I don't know what kind of coffee he drinks but it's working Jonah Ellis's pursuit is relentless
08:56thank you Robinson getting in there Q still learning and fought the game played a lot at Alabama but the NFL it's so much quicker there's so many more formations and guys are talking like they have unlimited wireless minutes
09:09so you're trying to focus and so you're trying to focus and hearing noise you'll get it figured out
09:12can you hear me here third down and five after 7 p.m. I have unlimited minutes
09:18remember those days too
09:20I used to call my parents collect are you kidding me call me in 10 minutes I'll have minutes
09:25third down and five here's two and again under pressure from Ellis pitches to the right to Carter
09:33and he has slammed out of bounds in a big way
09:36Broncos aggressive defense all night JL Skinner right there and again Ellis forcing the issue
09:43and under pressure right as he gets back to his drop and Clayton Toon has to
09:48click it to his right there how about that hit at the end that's exactly what you want out of your corners
09:54and safeties to come up and play it hard Quentin Newsome not getting a lot of opportunities at the
09:59back of the depth chart but made it made his name known on that one see we get a look at the long snapper Aaron Brewer now on
10:07as the Cardinals are in punt formation
10:10fourth down and four upcoming
10:14my former teammate on the Super Bowl 50 team there he is
10:17hilarious and I got to interrupt one of the sacred moments in pregame you never interrupt kickers but
10:23Aaron put the ball down came over we laughed a little bit talked about some of the things we saw that year
10:28and happy for him what a career he's put together now in his
10:3214th season what does it say the guys are still playing and you were teammates with that's
10:39it says I'm young Steve that's impressive young Aaron Brewer was the long snapper here for Matt Prater's 64 yard field goal that Broncos record
10:48hey man when I come back next life I want to come back as a long snapper there's good quality of life there long careers you gotta be perfect yeah every time
10:59fair catch signaled for
11:01by Courtney Jackson as we approach the two minute warning just a 43 yard punch stay tuned during halftime of tonight's game
11:09it'll be the nine news halftime report quick look at today's headlines news of weather
11:13Colorado's news leader
11:15nine news temperatures in the area reached 90 degrees today but it was
11:20certainly very comfortable at kickoff to get into the low 70s here as we progress throughout the night
11:24with your forecast weatherman Steve Levy I like it
11:28traffic and weather on the 10s
11:29Broncos are backed up
11:34they'll start from the 11 yard line
11:37expect to see Sam Ellinger in the second every saw loosening up earlier
11:41Stidham stays in their hands to bidet and he is met immediately in the backfield for a loss of one on the play
11:48Anthony Goodloe made the stop first year at a player out of Oklahoma State
11:54now the running back room is starting to show itself RJ Harvey started the game had a touchdown run to end the first drive
12:01you see Tyler but day and you see others and so now
12:04Ardrick estimate is going to be coming in in that second half and he's going to have to have the game of his life to stay in the roster conversation
12:11Broncos not in a hurry that ticks down to the two-minute warning
12:15Denver has two timeouts remaining down the stretch we go until halftime 17 7 Broncos
12:31I'm Scotty Gange can we just take a quick moment to look at the crowd here everybody at home this game does not count it's the preseason and the starters on each side of the field are not playing but it's filled with Bronco fans wearing their blue and orange boy Steve Ryan I tell you this city this state is so excited about this team and I think the number of fans in here is a perfect representation of that this evening
12:55Scottie the Broncos have sold out every home game since 1970
13:02another completion there I'll say that again the Broncos have sold out every home game since 1970
13:09that speaks to this fan base and during some third downs earlier in the first quarter you can hear them tonight too and they're always asking for the in on season tickets to the only team I played for that more people like hey can you help me get on the season ticket list than any other team and I've been able to play I played for the Steelers the Chiefs but I can tell you
13:25that no one is as loud as the Broncos when the fans stomp their feet your face mask rattles on the field is one of the coolest feelings in the NFL
13:33hey those are three if you can play for three organizations like you pick the three right ones I'm a winner and I'm working with you I keep winning come on Steve
13:41those fans don't get a big head though well I got the hat now if I do I love those I love seeing the creativity in the hat I love the alternate jerseys to the NFL
13:51the NFL is letting you let the let that new kind of graphics and design come to fruition
13:57second down and ten
13:59Stidham out firing
14:01on the mark Michael Bandy welcome to the stat sheet
14:05he makes the catch
14:07Bandy able to pick up 16
14:09you know what else looks good out on the field tonight
14:11how about the new grass tonight huh I love new turf
14:15resodded it
14:17Kentucky bluegrass
14:18that's the best there is
14:19looks good on your television screen wherever you're watching
14:23hopefully with friends and loved ones
14:25feels like the outer fringe of a green for all you golfers out there that's what this grass feels like down there and players love it saves your knees
14:33save some injuries
14:35they got finished with the stadium series here at Empower Field
14:39at mile high and put down the new grass for the new NFL season
14:43looking extremely promising for the Broncos
14:46Stidham off his back foot throws it up for grabs
14:49it's incomplete and the flags fly
14:51Trent Shurfield senior felt the contact early
14:55a lot of hands on hips for those Cardinals defensive backs
14:59this play is all Jarrett Stidham
15:03pass interference
15:05defense number 13
15:07spot foul
15:09automatic first down
15:10it's on key trail Clark
15:12he's out of bubble to make this Cardinals roster
15:14anyone who says the preseason doesn't matter don't tell Jarrett Stidham
15:18steps up in the pocket using his perfect technique gets out and points to his receiver
15:21come on back come on back how he throws this ball going left to his right
15:25and getting that pass interference
15:27that is because he didn't give up on the play
15:30neither did Shurfield senior
15:32what an absolute bang bang play for the Broncos
15:3528 yard penalty
15:37and he got hit at the end
15:39and he was smiling about it so you know he's okay
15:41minute 18 until halftime
15:43Broncos have two timeouts remaining
15:45this time it's the check down to bidet
15:47he's got some running room
15:48cuts inside the 20 another first down for Denver
15:51Stidham's over 200 yards passing
15:57Blunt makes the stop for Arizona
16:01wonderful screen call by Sean Payton a one lineman screen that is going to confuse every defense
16:07and every offensive coordinator just saw that in the NFL saying do we have that play
16:1110 plays already over 10 yards
16:13now Stidham wants the end zone
16:14back shoulder it is caught
16:16Troy Franklin
16:18it's another dime for Jared Stidham
16:21and he finds Franklin again
16:24for a beautiful touchdown
16:26Franklin screaming with joy at the end it meant more to him than anybody in this stadium
16:33what I love you're gonna hear this often late hands from a receiver watch how late the hands come up
16:38by Franklin that is him understanding he's likely getting the ball he's pressed covered
16:44so you can't show those hands early the defensive back will get their hands in there he shows them late
16:48gets the grab two feet in bounds for six
16:51Franklin played at Oregon with Bo Nix and proving he's also got a fine connection with Jared Stidham
17:01extra point good six plays 88 yards a minute 47 on the drive and Denver opens up a 24 to 7 lead
17:10Jared Stidham now back-to-back games with 50-50 balls as they call them
17:15but he places it in just the right area so his receiver can get his body between the defender and the ball
17:22really remarkable how well Jared Stidham's playing
17:25Scott he started the night telling everybody about Sean Payton at 14 15 17 things he was upset about from last week
17:32listen Payton's not gonna be happy because he's an NFL head coach I get that but
17:36what's he gonna find a complaint about in this first half
17:38well the offsides penalties false start penalties I mean this is you can win games in the NFL in the regular season playing like that
17:45and one of the things people forget Jared Stidham's showing Bo Nix what he can do
17:49every quarterback's different they're gonna make different decisions
17:51Jared Stidham's playing within the system making pinpoint passes
17:55and that puts pressure on Bo Nix to do the same and be better and as the competitor Bo Nix is he wants to prove why he's the number one quarterback
18:03so this is learning for Bo Nix as well as the production for Jared Stidham
18:08no head coach has won a Super Bowl with two different franchises
18:13does that surprise you that that shocks me by accident one time you think somebody
18:18would after winning a Super Bowl would go to a different franchise and win it again
18:22but it hasn't happened yet and Sean Payton obviously has that opportunity
18:26and after winning the Super Bowl Super 44 is the head coach of the New Orleans Saints
18:31oh by the way that's where the Broncos are headed next week to close out the preseason
18:38D.J. Dallas on the return good special team stopped there by Garrett Wallow
18:45By Garrett Wallow.
18:52Another side of things rolling right here is Denver.
18:57The percentage of players returning from one season, last season to this season, Denver's first in the NFL.
19:04When they're around a bunch of playoff teams, and what that means is you're hitting in the draft, which they have.
19:08Guys like Jonah Ellis, Franklin has just made the catch.
19:11You've got to win in the draft.
19:13And what that brings to is familiarity and speed, because now you know what you're doing.
19:16You're not thinking.
19:17You're out there playing football like you're in high school.
19:19Two throws.
19:21Hits Michael Carter.
19:24Karen A. Reid makes the stop.
19:26Loss of one out of the play.
19:28Reid had the interception a week ago.
19:30He's a guy trying to make this team undrafted free agent out of Utah.
19:35That Utah college program is putting a lot of guys in the NFL.
19:39Great job they're doing there.
19:40Reid just making a play.
19:43That's what you can do.
19:43All you can focus on is the opportunity you're getting.
19:45You can't focus on what other guys do in the game that you're competing with.
19:48What can you do?
19:50How can you play?
19:50How hard can you play when given the chance?
19:522nd down and 11.
20:06Watch Jonah Ellis on the bottom of your screen.
20:10Got a little extra water on that break.
20:1135 ticks remaining.
20:16Here's Toon throwing.
20:17Got it away.
20:18Completes.
20:19DeGuara.
20:20His second catch out of bounds.
20:22Stops the clock with 31 seconds left.
20:26Clayton Toon likely his only opportunity to get this two-minute drill before it really matters.
20:31There's an injury in the game.
20:33Hopefully he prepared for it.
20:35Most backups do.
20:36But you don't get this kind of free range to think a little bit and make some of your own decisions like you do in the preseason.
20:433rd and 4 upcoming.
20:44So the Broncos have used two timeouts already, have one remaining.
20:50Arizona's got all three.
20:52With 31 seconds left on the clock and the football at their own 30.
20:57It looked like the left tackle jumped.
21:06Ball start.
21:07Offense, number 78.
21:095-yard penalty.
21:11It's 3rd down.
21:11The clock was not running, so there is no potential for a 10-second runoff.
21:16That's Josh Fryer, rookie out of Ohio State.
21:20I don't know, maybe at some point here the Cardinals just take a knee.
21:22They keep going in the wrong direction.
21:24We'll see.
21:24They keep giving opportunities to Jonah Ellis, and that's why that was a false start.
21:29Because Jonah Ellis was on that side, and now you've got your tackle Fryer just trying to get back.
21:34As a tackler, you're saying, I just want to get in front of him real quick.
21:36He didn't even rush on that play, and that's the effort that Jonah Ellis gives.
21:40He's living rent-free, and that tackles mine.
21:42You have Ellis already making this team.
21:44100%.
21:45Yeah, me too.
21:46Here's the pressure.
21:47It's Ellis again in the backfield.
21:49Blows up that play on Clayton Toon, and a flag comes in at the end.
21:55His get-off is immaculate.
21:59He's untouched, and he pursues the quarterback.
22:02I'm not.
22:03Maybe they're getting him for landing on the quarterback.
22:05I'm not sure, but.
22:06Did he try to intentionally ground that?
22:08Could that be dumping it?
22:09Let's see.
22:11There's a huddle back at the 10-yard line.
22:14Jonah Ellis is just, he's stronger, he's quicker, and defensive ends, you have to take some risks.
22:20You have to know, okay, it's four seconds left on the clock.
22:22That next sound is likely the snap.
22:25Intentional grounding.
22:27Offense, number 15.
22:29Loss it down at the spot of the foul.
22:32Sport down.
22:34Denver is elected not to run 10 seconds from the clock.
22:37So Jonah will start on the snap.
22:39Jonah Ellis creates a false start at the play before, and then creates the very next play
22:44in intentional grounding with contact on the quarterback.
22:47That is relentless pursuit of excellence.
22:50And if it wasn't Ellis, Barron probably would have gotten there too.
22:54So, listen, on a first half where the Broncos looked unbelievable on defense,
22:59Jonah Ellis has really stood out.
23:01And you want your draft picks to play and play well.
23:04A lot of teams are on the NFL, even at this point.
23:07Guys they drafted this year are saying, we got the wrong guy.
23:10George Payton and Sean Payton put together a heck of a roster.
23:12And you add Evan Ingram, Greenlaw, Talanoa, Hufanga,
23:16this is going to be a defense that might set records.
23:19Gillick in the punt.
23:20Here's Courtney Jackson.
23:22And he'll get out to the 43-yard line.
23:2518 seconds left.
23:27And Denver will take over with the football.
23:32It's been an excellent first half for the Broncos.
23:36Got off to a slow start a week ago against the 49ers, but were, you know, dominant latter stages of the first quarter on.
23:44Outscored the Niners going away 30-0.
23:46And here enjoying a 24-7 lead looks like going to the half.
23:49And that's everybody, coaches and players, right?
23:51Coaches have to call the right plays.
23:53Players have to execute.
23:54But the Broncos coming out and fixing the big thing they wanted to after last week.
23:58Starting fast on both sides of the ball.
24:00Stidham was 14-15 last week.
24:03Tonight he's 14-20 for 228 yards and two more touchdowns.
24:07And he's not done.
24:09Wants to throw some more.
24:11Able to complete.
24:12There's Shurfield Sr.
24:14Look at the Broncos hustling to the balls.
24:16Ten seconds left.
24:17Denver has one timeout.
24:18And why not get this rep?
24:19Maybe try to set up for a last-second field goal if you can.
24:23It is so useful.
24:24And one of the things you weren't able to see on TV is Trent Shurfield Sr. ran the ball back to the referee.
24:31This situation, less than 10 seconds, take the ball, hand it to the referee.
24:36Don't put it on the ground.
24:37So Shurfield Sr. knowing that coaching point, executing it,
24:41and then everybody getting on the line of scrimmage and set
24:43so that Jarrett Stidham can snap it for one last shot.
24:46Heads-up play for Shurfield.
24:48Six-team in six years.
24:50Four consecutive one-year contracts.
24:53Heads finally gets a two-year deal with the Broncos.
24:55Heady play right there.
24:57Coaches I talked to of his at the Vikings loved him.
24:59Said there's no job too small.
25:01They could put him in any situation.
25:04It's the exact kind of player you want on this roster.
25:06Cardinals will spend their first timeout with six seconds to play.
25:12Now, too, when you put that on film,
25:14now Coach Payton's going to say,
25:16watch Shurfield Sr. run the ball back to the referee.
25:19Watch everybody get to the line despite the ball not being there.
25:22The center's got to get set.
25:23Quarterback's got to be right there.
25:25That's something they practiced,
25:26and sometimes you forget about it in the game as a player
25:29because you're like, okay, it's second down.
25:30What are we doing?
25:30Oh, no, we've got to get on the ball.
25:31So communication was high.
25:33Awareness was high.
25:34That's exactly what you're looking for,
25:35and worth it even if they don't score points here
25:37in these last six seconds.
25:39You know, some guys are running around celebrating
25:41or goofing around like,
25:42no, there's still business to attend to here.
25:45100%.
25:46And a guy like Sean Payton will certainly recognize that.
25:49You're right.
25:50Six seconds left.
25:52Denver has one timeout remaining.
25:55Quick hitter, maybe try to set up a field goal
25:57or get out of bounds.
25:58Sure.
25:59Back to Troy Franklin.
26:01Pick up a seven.
26:03Two seconds left on the clock.
26:05Will Lutz.
26:07They're going to run him out.
26:08See where they spotted this football.
26:12The 70-yard kick last week.
26:14Yes.
26:15You knew that some coaches were going to see if their kicker could do it, too.
26:18From the 46-yard line is the spot.
26:23This is big for Will Lutz.
26:2464.
26:26This is some Matt Prater stuff right here.
26:29For Will Lutz.
26:31Career-long is 60, and can't curve at home.
26:36Looked like it was short and off to the right.
26:42And that's how the first half comes to an end here in Denver,
26:46and that's virtually the only thing that didn't go the Broncos' way.
26:50And Lutz wanted that for his confidence for the rest of the season
26:53to show his teammates and coaches they can do this.
26:56And he gets to learn, like all of us who shot a pitching wedge,
26:59you've got to tune it in a little bit more,
27:00and that's what the preseason's for.
27:02Dial in your details and your techniques.
27:06But valuable reps just trying to get to be set up in that position.
27:11You might be in that same scenario, end of half, end of game,
27:14in 22 days from now when the Tennessee Titans are in town.
27:19One of the things about our Super Bowl 50 team,
27:21we won at that time the most games within three points
27:24than anyone else in the NFL.
27:25There you go.
27:26Down to Cynthia.
27:27Back in a power field at mile high.
27:35Denver, Colorado, and it's all Broncos here.
27:37Final game around this week two of the NFL on this Saturday night.
27:4224-7, Denver enjoying the lead.
27:44I'm Steve Levy with Ryan Harris, Super Bowl 50 champion.
27:48Scotty Gaines and Cynthia Freeland with us on the broadcast as well.
27:50I mean, I think just about everything went right there for Denver in the first half.
27:55It did.
27:56I mean, offensively, you had explosion,
27:58and the points were scored by multiple players.
28:00Quarterback played well in Jarrett Stidham.
28:02Then also defensively, you gave up one score
28:04and then shut everything down for the rest of the game so far.
28:08So everybody has improved from week one.
28:10Broncos had a 97-yard scoring drive.
28:13Explosive and everybody getting involved.
28:16Some of the highlights, and again, there were many to choose from here.
28:18Well, these are highlights and confidence plays.
28:21R.J. Harvey getting to walk into the end zone.
28:24Troy Franklin with one of two touchdowns in the half,
28:27a player that everybody had questions about coming into this season.
28:31No more questions, he says.
28:32I'm getting points.
28:34And then you get other players who are fighting for jobs.
28:36Jaleel McLaughlin showing that toughness,
28:38and then Tyler Bidet and Blake Watson really accelerating
28:41and separating themselves from everyone else
28:43by the way they could catch the football.
28:45But this is all because Jarrett Stidham is executing at a high, high level.
28:50He doesn't think this game doesn't matter.
28:52He understands what it means to his teammates.
28:54Jarrett Stidham leading the way for the victory so far.
28:57Stidham unbelievable.
28:5816-23.
28:59240 in the two touchdowns.
29:01First half stats sponsored by Verizon.
29:04The Denver Broncos are powered by Verizon 5G.
29:07So you know what jumps out to me there?
29:09We don't even have a category for turnovers.
29:11There weren't any.
29:11That's incredible.
29:13Both defenses not getting the hands on the football.
29:15No doubt that was a coaching point for the Broncos going in.
29:18Hey, guys, last week at this time we had three turnovers in the half.
29:22What are you doing?
29:23Let's get our hands on some footballs, turn this game, and seal this deal.
29:26Again, these coaches, they're going to find something to be angry
29:28or at least not happy about, but it'll be tough for Sean Payton.
29:33Kickoff.
29:34Get a kick return straight ahead.
29:37It's Bidet out beyond the 30-yard line.
29:40And here is the aforementioned Scotty Gange.
29:42All right, Steve.
29:43You know, I tell you, being down on the sideline today,
29:45it is so much different at this moment right now than it was last week in Santa Clara.
29:50It's almost like a party down here.
29:52When the Broncos are making plays, the guys are going crazy.
29:55Of course, they're up 24-7.
29:56The starters are having a great time.
29:57It's awesome to see whether they're wearing shoulder pads
30:00or those little sleeveless hoodies that all the starters are wearing on the sideline.
30:04Everybody's having fun.
30:05It's just great vibes down here, fellas.
30:07Stidham's arm's got to be tired.
30:08All right, let's give him a break.
30:10He's saying, Coach, I can keep playing.
30:12Sam Ellinger checks in to open up quarter number three.
30:15Wants to throw and throws into a pile of Cardinal red.
30:20A host of Cardinals there to make the tackle.
30:24And that's going to go as a loss of five.
30:27And Ellinger put it into Blake Watson's hands.
30:29It goes as a completed pass, but that's about it.
30:32You can see the numbers on Sam Ellinger from a week ago against the 49ers.
30:37And that's one of the questions, buddy.
30:39Should Denver keep a third quarterback as they did a season ago with Zach Wilson?
30:44Well, you do want your quarterback familiar with the formations and things like that.
30:47But talking to coaches around the NFL,
30:50they sometimes keep that third spot open for a quarterback that they didn't see
30:53that may be getting let go from a team that has some depth there at the quarterback position.
30:57Here's Blake Watson for a pickup of five.
31:01And one of the offensive linemen got just bowled over.
31:05I think Nick Gargiulo got just bowled over by the Cardinals' defensive front there.
31:11They're coming out.
31:12Back-to-back screen plays.
31:13It's unusual offensively, especially with a new quarterback in.
31:16Typically, you want to run the football, let them get into the pace of the game.
31:19But Ellinger getting some early action here.
31:213rd down and 10 from the 33.
31:26Cardinals look like they're going to send some heat.
31:29Arizona, 41 sacks last season.
31:33Like 13th in the NFL.
31:34There is the pressure.
31:35Ellinger trying to get away.
31:37He swung around.
31:38A flag comes in at the end.
31:39He got back to the 30.
31:41Benton Whitley brought him down, but there's a flag back at midfield.
31:45And I think our day one, Caleb Lohner is going to have drawn the penalty here.
31:52Nobody knows how to cover.
31:53Contact.
31:54Defense.
31:55Number 26.
31:56Five-year penalty from the previous spot.
31:59Automatic first out.
32:00That's on Jamie Robinson.
32:02Third-year player out of Florida State.
32:05Robinson 5'11", going against the 6'7", Caleb Lohner.
32:08He was absolutely with his hands on that man.
32:12Everybody would be.
32:15Lohner played 52 snaps of college football.
32:19That's it.
32:20And the Broncos still took a flyer on him.
32:23Seventh-round draft pick out of Utah.
32:26Love what coach said about him, too.
32:27I told the coaches, don't tell me what he can't do.
32:29That's how good of an athlete he is.
32:32I want to know what he can do.
32:33And let's grow him in this game.
32:34Blake Watson is the first man through.
32:36The ball carrier picks up three.
32:39And so when you think Sean Payton in drafting a guy like Caleb Lohner,
32:42the comparison is to Jimmy Graham, right?
32:45A tight end who had some kind of basketball career.
32:48Payton said that Lohner was far better than a basketball player
32:51than Graham even could have imagined he was.
32:54So he watched more basketball film on Lohner than actual football film as well.
32:57That's the depth that George Payton and Sean Payton go through
33:00in evaluating the players.
33:01Offense number 84.
33:03Ten-yard penalty.
33:04There's your boy Lohner on the hold.
33:07And so here's a look at Caleb Lohner playing some hoops.
33:11Just range all day.
33:13A little turnaround.
33:15He can do that on third and nine.
33:17That's great, too.
33:18Get up there.
33:19Also at 6'7", can he catch 11-foot football?
33:22That's what I want to know.
33:23Five seasons of college basketball.
33:25Two at BYU, two at Baylor, one at Utah.
33:28I mean, big-time basketball programs.
33:30He made four catches on the season in his one year of college football.
33:35All were for touchdowns.
33:37That's what got him drafted.
33:38Audrick Estime is in now for Denver on second and 17.
33:43Threw out to the left.
33:44Jawan Newton makes the grab.
33:48Rookie, undrafted, free agent out of Toledo, a rocket.
33:52And we'll start to see some of the bottom of the roster wide receivers now for the Broncos.
33:59The top six appear to be all in good standing.
34:08Shurfield, Franklin, Bryant, Sutton, Valey, Mims.
34:11That's actually in numerical order.
34:13And then is there a seventh wide receiver that could make this team?
34:16They're going to have to play on special teams, too.
34:18That's why I like a Michael Bandy or Courtney Jackson.
34:20Yep.
34:22Jackson's been the main return man tonight.
34:24Here's Elliger throwing.
34:26Nice throw, and it's Joaquin Davis makes the grab.
34:31Second-year rookie out of, beg your pardon, at North Carolina Central.
34:35He's got great speed and leaping ability.
34:39Davis here getting that speed upfield and the separation.
34:42Stopping on a dime.
34:44Rounding that hoop, as they call it.
34:46Davis has had a phenomenal camp.
34:47To the point where I thought maybe coaches might try and hide him a little bit in the preseason,
34:51get him on the practice squad.
34:52But dealing with a hand injury, but his hands look to be just fine there.
34:56Estimé, the ball carrier, back to the line of scrimmage.
34:59Hopefully Estimé is just focusing on the next play.
35:01But right now, you get to run like that after seeing what Bidet and Watson have been doing.
35:06You want to break one for 60 yards and say, hey, don't get it.
35:08That's got to be in your head.
35:09How could it not?
35:10That's human nature.
35:11Well, you've got to train yourself and be a pro.
35:13Just the next play.
35:13Hey, I can't control what opportunities I get, but I can control my effort, my vision, and my technique.
35:19That's where Audra Guestamé has to live right now.
35:22Broncos just beyond midfield.
35:24Second down and eight.
35:26Another opportunity.
35:29Estimé.
35:29Good run.
35:30First down.
35:31There is a flag.
35:32Oh, and Papo made the stop for Arizona.
35:38It's a game of nine if it stands.
35:41All-start on receiver, I believe.
35:44Offense.
35:45Number 84 did not come set after the players were in motion.
35:50It's a five-yard penalty.
35:51Second down.
35:52That's your basketball player again.
35:53Second penalty in four plays.
35:55But, hey, he's young.
35:55Okay.
35:56I had two back-to-back penalties in my first preseason game.
35:59Really?
35:59I was getting cut that next morning.
36:01What happened?
36:02We set the record for few sacks allowed that year.
36:04Top five offense in both categories.
36:07They were probably bad calls against you.
36:08100%.
36:09You know, the refs are getting used to seeing again now that they're in preseason, you know?
36:13They want to put it on the young guy, too, right?
36:15Second and 13.
36:19Elliger back at the 45.
36:21Quick out to the right.
36:22Hits Newton again.
36:24He'll be swung around just back to the line of scrimmage.
36:27Maybe a yard on the play.
36:31You can tell Sam Elliger wants to throw the football.
36:34We got to see him a couple years ago in Indianapolis.
36:36I think they had six quarterbacks that preseason, if I remember correctly.
36:40Elliger's got that arm, can make throws,
36:42and he wants to show that he's got the arm talent to be a backup quarterback here in the NFL.
36:46Big-time star at Texas.
36:47He actually left college with the fourth most total touchdowns in Big 12 history.
36:54Trying to catch on here with the Broncos.
36:58Third and 13.
37:02Arizona brings lots of pressure, and Elliger can't get out of it.
37:06Pocket collapsed around him, and he is brought down by a host of Cardinals.
37:12A little bit of a blitz zero look, and this left side, on your left side,
37:20this player lets you know that it's open to the left.
37:24Caleb Lohner was out there, but Elliger didn't see it.
37:26Scotty, take it away.
37:27All right, fellas.
37:29You know, Jeremy Croshaw, growing up in Australia, he worked at McDonald's.
37:33Of course, in Australia, they call it Macca's.
37:36Macca's?
37:37Macca's.
37:37I didn't know this, and I said, well, are you ever going to work at McDonald's again?
37:40He goes, no, I think if this football thing seems to be working out,
37:42so I think I'm doing just fine, won't have to go back to McDonald's.
37:46I can confirm the Macca's thing.
37:48No way.
37:49Doing the Super Bowl in Australia.
37:51Everybody, every commercial is for Macca's.
37:55That's not good.
37:55I'm loving it.
37:56What do you mean?
37:57I'm loving it, too.
37:58It's the original.
37:59Got a brother get a Big Mac.
38:02I think they call it something else, actually.
38:07Tonight's coverage is sponsored in part by Breckenridge Distillery.
38:10Breckenridge Bourbon Whiskey, the official bourbon of the Denver Broncos.
38:14Shop your local Colorado retailers for Breckenridge's limited edition Broncos bourbon whiskeys and Broncos vodka.
38:23Joined by 9 News Broncos inside of the one and only Mike Kliss.
38:28What's going on?
38:29How we doing?
38:30How you doing, guys?
38:31You guys are doing great.
38:32Good.
38:32Happy to see you.
38:33Usually we get you in the third preseason game.
38:37Yeah.
38:37And you correctly predict all 53 spots of the roster.
38:41Yeah.
38:42Yeah.
38:42A bunch snap there.
38:44Good job by Toon to just hang on to it, then gets rid of it.
38:49Underneath.
38:49The catch is made for a short gain.
38:53That's Vogtolik, the tight end for Arizona.
38:58Smith made the stop.
38:59Keidron Smith.
39:00So where do you want to start?
39:02We were joking that Sean Payton's going to be hard-pressed to find anything to be angry about after that first half.
39:07Yeah, he's going to have to start a race from that 17-point list that he was talking about.
39:11But, you know, I think this team with expectations, they've shown it in training camp.
39:17They've shown it in the joint practices.
39:19They've shown it so far in two preseason games with two decisive games here, two decisive wins.
39:26Bo Nix looked a little shaky last week in the preseason game, but he bounced back with a terrific joint practice against the Cardinals.
39:35He was throwing a ball with authority, downfield, you know, the 18- to 20-yard middle routes, the sideline routes.
39:42That's the best Bo's look.
39:43So he's ready to go.
39:45He's got some new weapons.
39:46What do you think that offensively Ingram and Shurfield add to this Broncos roster?
39:51Well, Ingram definitely showed, you know, he was the lone starter tonight, and he was overqualified with that 158-yard catch-and-run.
40:00He's really going to have something.
40:01Shurfield is making the team.
40:03He'll be one of the backup receivers and a standout special teamer.
40:08Tune on the run and throwing and completing to Michael Carter.
40:15Good shirt tackling by the Broncos to make sure he doesn't get to the line to gain.
40:20And then tonight you saw Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant.
40:23Those guys are making their move for that number two.
40:25Didn't see Marvin Mims tonight.
40:27He'll probably start his number two.
40:29He'll be kind of a jack-of-all-trades.
40:32He's got that speed.
40:33Got that speed, but I tell you, Franklin's come a long way.
40:36He's been the most improved player this year.
40:38Had a terrific camp.
40:39And, yeah, great.
40:40And it doesn't even matter who the quarterback is for Franklin.
40:43Everybody knows about his affiliation with Knicks at Oregon and obviously with Stidham.
40:47It's been great as well.
40:49Gilligan punts it away.
40:50Courtney Jackson still trying to make this team, Mike.
40:53From the five.
40:54Look at him.
40:55The 20, 25.
40:57Took a big hit at the 29.
41:00If he could have shaken that last cardinal, that could have turned into something big.
41:05But Michael Carter got in the way.
41:08More with 9 News Broncos insider Mike Kliss when we come back.
41:19Ramos, medical doctor and attorney.

41:24Ramos Law.
41:24What makes us different makes us better.
41:27Back with Mike Kliss, 9 News Broncos insider.
41:31And so you've been covering this team for, was it 40 years, you said?
41:34Yeah.
41:35I look like it.
41:36But it's actually been 21.
41:38Just 21.
41:38This has to be among the tougher jobs for any Broncos GM.
41:43There just seems to be depth in every position group here.
41:46This year, there's more depth than they've had, which is, you know, Sean Payton, George Payton have rebuilt this team.
41:52Slowly but surely.
41:54And your 10 and 7 made the playoffs last year.
41:58And then they went out and made some key acquisitions.
42:01You know, on defense, you got Greenlaw, Hufanga.
42:04Then you got Ingram on offense, Shurfield to, and Dobbins.
42:10Gargiulo is down on the field right now.
42:12It does not look good.
42:15Send up your prayers.
42:22We'll be back.
42:34It was October 5, 2014.
42:55He had 226 yards receiving on eight catches today.
42:59Broncos receiving record previously held by the Hall of Famer, Shen Sharp.
43:03Scored two touchdowns at 31 and 86 yards.
43:06Actually had a 77-yard touchdown called back, which would have placed him in the top three performance, performance of all time.
43:15Demarius will be inducted into the Broncos' ring of fame this season.
43:19And you, these are live pictures now of what's going on on the field here.
43:24All of the Broncos out at midfield.
43:27And a lot of the Cardinals sending their best wishes to Nick Gargiulo, the offensive line.
43:36Got player, first-year player out of South Carolina.
43:39Got rolled up on, blocking somebody else.
43:41So doing his job, getting injured.
43:43It's brutal because when you're playing, Steve, you can't, you're not thinking about injuries.
43:46You're playing as hard as you can.
43:47All of a sudden, everything sounds different.
43:49You're thinking different things.
43:50All of a sudden, prayers up for Gargiulo.
43:53And you knew it was bad immediately.
43:56We all, I've never seen a cart faster onto an NFL field than what we just saw.
44:00Never.
44:00Everybody knew.
44:01They usually want to give a player every chance they can to get off the field themselves.
44:05And you've got to think about, for the family members, too, right?
44:08I mean, you've got family in the stands.
44:09They see that cart come out.
44:11They're concerned.
44:11They're going down right now to the locker room to go meet him.
44:13And around the country, watching on 9 News, the NFL Network tonight.
44:18So we'll be thinking about Nick, the entire Gargiulo family, and certainly if we get a report
44:23and hopefully get some good news before we go off the air tonight, Cynthia or Scotty,
44:28we will pass it along to you.
44:30Caden pre-scoring on the receiving end of that Ellinger pass, picks up 12 yards there.
44:38Broncos trying to go fast here with six minutes to play in the third quarter, already leading
44:4324-7, and Caleb Loner gets his hands on the football, using his hands for good things
44:51there as opposed to bad and penalties and crime.
44:53He always hangs on to the ball.
44:55You know, he did it in basketball.
44:56He's doing it on the NFL field now, too.
44:58He's going to be an interesting guy on the roster.
