Manchester Pride 2025: Understanding Mardi Gras

We went down to Freight Island to find out a bit more about the brilliant performances and acts that they can expect to see at this year’s celebration.

00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World my name is Theo Qspets and today I'm coming to you from Freya

00:07Island talking to you about Manchester Pride now it's coming up very very soon it starts on the

00:1122nd of August and here at Freya Island is where we're going to be seeing a lot of Mardi Gras themed

00:16performances from Pride with some brilliant performers set to take the stage so we're going

00:21to talk to some of the team here and find out what's in store for people who want to come down

00:25and give it a try we're also going to be looking at the space and hearing about what they're going

00:28to transform it into so I'm Isabelle Stainsbury I use she they pronouns and I'm head of operations

00:32at Manchester Pride so we are taking over Freya Island and Mayfield Depot it's going to be an

00:38absolutely incredible weekend we've got this for both the Saturday and the Sunday incredible artists

00:44we've just announced Nelly Furtado which I am absolutely buzzing about but there's going to be

00:48great acts on every single day and night and a lot of different spaces as well so you can sort of

00:55enjoy your own vibe flow through the day you know have a nice drink and a sit-down meal watch a bit

01:01of cabaret in Freya Island be raving in the garden later on if you want to and then yeah definitely

01:08a big old boogie inside at Mayfield Depot too I think the most important thing about this venue is

01:13that it just gives us a huge space where everybody can come together and we want to make sure that there

01:18is something here for absolutely everyone we know that our LGBTQ plus communities are diverse in their

01:25tastes and in what they want to see from a pride and we're really excited to bring this to the

01:29program so that we can make sure that there's something for everyone Mardi Gras is a new event

01:33for us this year it was named Mardi Gras to honor Manchester Pride's histories Manchester Pride

01:38originally was known as Mardi Gras back in the 90s so really excited to bring that history to life here

01:43um this event is going to be absolutely amazing it's a full day festival vibe you can come and

01:49enjoy the full day from I think it's like noon up until 11 o'clock at night and then if you do want

01:56to see another boogie down in the gaverly because that's only nine minutes walk away too so yeah it's

02:01a great way as well to show up for pride to show up for communities by coming to these events you're

02:06showing visibility for the modern pride movement and you're helping us raise funds that we can distribute

02:11to LGBTQ plus communities throughout the entire year I cannot wait to see Club Dykes and Dolls

02:16um I love the energy of a queer women's space especially one that's trans inclusive and the

02:21lineup that looks wicked too so there you have it a huge brilliant quirky space that's going to be

02:31jam-packed full of people celebrating the best that pride has to offer there's going to be some

02:35brilliant shows here it's exactly the sort of place where you'll be dragged up on stage to join in

02:40in some sort of drag karaoke so I can guarantee if you come down to Frey Island 22nd to the 25th of

02:46August you'll have a great time and if you are looking forward to pride let us know down below
