00:00In football is brought to you by Blue Moon, the proud beer partner of your Chicago Bears.
00:06It was just put together an excellent drive to score their first points of the day.
00:11Scoring drive is brought to you by ChevyDriveChicago.com.
00:14Great play by the former high school quarterback in Miami.
00:17Went to college at FIU as a QB.
00:19Became a wide receiver for his final two years.
00:22Doesn't get drafted.
00:23Has to go through the USFL.
00:25And then the last three years, Ben Johnson saw him in Detroit.
00:28Only seven games, but knew that Alexander had something to bring to the table.
00:32And he puts together a very impressive play for the touchdown.
00:36Perfect kick to the goal line for Dee Eskridge, but a better return.
00:41League average is about the 29-30 yard line.
00:44That's a great return, well past the 40 for Dee Eskridge, who had some issues in Seattle,
00:49but is an addition here in Miami for the Dolphins.
00:5342-yard return.
00:54So a good field position for the Dolphins' offense.
00:58And now the Bears' defense looking to make another stop like they did on their first drive.
01:02Yeah, Dee Eskridge is at a really good camp in his connection,
01:06in terms of his connection with Tua Tungo-Bailoa.
01:12Not to mention in the return game.
01:13Yep, huge in the return game.
01:15So Zach Wilson's second drive, under pressure, could not stay on his feet long enough.
01:24And this is a rusher that's going to have to make an impact behind Sweat and Odengbo.
01:30This is Austin Booker, who had his rookie year last year.
01:32Yeah, it's really up for grabs, whether it's him, whether it's Robinson.
01:36Hey, it's up for grabs who's going to be the next guy.
01:38But Booker, we've described, I mean, this guy is a poor man's Mad Max Crosby.
01:42Probably came out too early, has gotten bigger, has gotten stronger.
01:47The Bears like his juice, and you saw it right there on that play.
01:50Wins the one-on-one, and that's a nice sack for a loss.
01:54Played about a quarter of the defensive snaps last year.
01:56Obviously, Montez Sweat was the main man up front who led the Bears in sacks.
02:00It's a second at 18.
02:05Pressure again on Wilson.
02:07Being chased by Pickens and Ford.
02:10And a slide.
02:12He is down inbounds.
02:14Booker brought the pressure yet again on that play.
02:17It'll be third down and long.
02:18Jim made an interesting observation with these Bears linebackers.
02:23Dennis Allen's really been moving them around.
02:25When you think about who the starters are going to be, right,
02:27T.J. Edwards and Jermaine Edmonds, probably their most comfortable spots,
02:32Mike linebacker for Edmonds, and the will there for T.J. Edwards.
02:36But you like that he's testing them, Jim, and getting them to move around,
02:40which we're seeing from these young guys here.
02:41He talked about getting the best 11 on the field.
02:44So say you have an injury to Edmonds.
02:46Honestly, your best bet is to put T.J. Edwards at middle linebacker.
02:51Then maybe you bring in Sewell as your weak side linebacker
02:54because that's where he's best suited to play at.
02:56So it's really making guys uncomfortable.
02:59Hey, I may ask you to play different positions.
03:01And as Stacey talked about earlier, he will use chess pieces.
03:06He will move Montez Sweat all over the defensive line to create the best matchup,
03:11much like, say, Kansas City does with Chris Jones.
03:14He's played DN.
03:15He's played D-tackle.
03:17Or they just say, hey, Chris Jones, where do you think you like your matchup?
03:20Go pick on that offensive lineman and make it happen, Captain.
03:23Well, the Bears brought a huge blitz that time,
03:26and they got beat by it for 33 yards.
03:29Back to Jalen Wright in the run game and a good one down to the 19-yard line.
03:33Coming up on the Advocate Healthcare Halftime Show,
03:35we'll take you to Gooding, Idaho, where Colston Loveland comes from.
03:40It's known for its strong sense of community and focus on hard work.
03:43Show you how Colston Loveland came up as Idaho tough.
03:46That's coming up in two minutes of game time.
03:49We've got the two-minute warning here in the first half.
03:53Idaho tough as a rancher.
03:56Out on the farm.
03:57You ever picked rocks?
03:58With him and his brother.
03:59You ever picked rocks, Adam?
04:00You have to to make sure it doesn't get caught in the farming equipment, right?
04:03If you're Colston Loveland from Gooding, Idaho,
04:05that's exactly what you and your brother do.
04:08How about that?
04:09He and his brother, Caden, had to build all those fences you see in the background there, too.
04:17Calling all young fans to join the Chicago Bears Kids Club.

04:3211th play in the red zone for Miami's offense already.
04:35Screen pass is batted away by Daniel Hardy.
04:39Excellent penetration by Hardy.
04:42He read that screen pass perfectly.
04:45Mostly special teams last year, but remember he had the key block punt in the opener.
04:49He reads these plays well.
04:50Yeah, well, the awareness.
04:51He's known he's prepared for it, has his wingspan out, ready to bat it down.
04:55It's known your opponent, too.
04:56And obviously, the way football has gone, there's more wide receiver screens,
05:01and the awareness to it.
05:02So, again, I think it talks about Dennis Allen, the points of emphasis,
05:06makes a great play right there.
05:07And Hardy has had really good preseasons.
05:09Last year, he was a sack master.
05:12Zach Wilson over the middle.
05:14He's got a man.
05:15It is caught by Eric Azekama, and he's got the first down.
05:19And one of the philosophies of Dennis Allen is,
05:21you take a look at this replay right here, right over the middle,
05:24just a really nice sit.
05:26Sits right down into that throw, but is protecting the middle of the field.
05:31They want to force leverage outside.
05:34They've got burned a couple of times in the middle of the field in this first half.
05:37This is certainly something to be emphasized for Allen.
05:44A familiar name, some big-time names as part of his bare staff.
05:49That was one of the keys in Detroit.
05:50Ben Johnson always talked about the depth of the staff around Dan Campbell.
05:54He's done a pretty good job of building this together.
05:56Of course, Dennis Allen's defense is still out on the field.
05:59It's first and goal for Miami at the seven-yard line.
06:03League average in the red zone for touchdown rates about 57%.
06:06So almost six out of every 10 times a team gets here, they score a TD.
06:11Bears held a team under 50% of the time in terms of touchdown rate.
06:16They've already had one goal line stand today.
06:19There is Jalen Wright.
06:21They won't get the stop this time.
06:22Wright bursts through for a touchdown.
06:24He's now their number two back behind Devon Achan.
06:31He and Madison are battling for that number two slot this year.
06:36So we tried to check out the replay here.
06:39Hole looked like it opened up pretty good.
06:40Obviously, they get the seal.
06:42The backside has to close down a little bit quicker.
06:45I think that was Dominique Robinson.
06:47No, it was 94 on that particular play.
06:49Austin Booker just seeing a little bit quicker come down the line of scrimmage.
06:53And make that tackle.
06:55Yeah, and they're expecting a big jump from him.
06:57I don't believe he had a touchdown last year in his rookie campaign.
07:00So it must feel good to get in the end zone here, albeit a preseason game.
07:04He was third and rushing behind Achan and Raheem Mostert, who again went to Vegas.
07:10We'll step to side kickoff coming when you come back.
07:12We'll step back.
07:14We'll step back.
07:15We'll step back.
07:15We'll step back.
07:18Nolten score a touchdown they take a 14 to 7 lead on the Bears finished 5 and 12 last
07:32season third and final year under Matt Eberkloos of course Eberkloos was fired after the Thanksgiving
07:37loss in Detroit started 4 and 2 last year and then went on that 10 game losing streak
07:43end of the season with some positivity snapping that long losing streak to the Green Bay Packers
07:48and Ben Johnson within the division comes over for his first NFL head coaching job of course he had
07:55offers he had opportunities he had interviews opted to stay in Detroit build up his resume a
08:00little bit more and now has an opportunity with a young quarterback Alexander has a catch for a
08:07touchdown he'll get a chance to return and he'll get back to the 25 yard line shy of league average
08:12Tyson Bajan has 100 seconds and two timeouts with which to work in two minute offense and it was
08:17interesting to hear from Tyson Bajan this week because that he's told us essentially there's a
08:22a piece of Ben Johnson they haven't tapped into a layer they haven't tapped into he said it's been
08:2899 percent gridiron all the way back to OTAs and I was like well what's the other one percent
08:33personality Jim how long does it take I mean it's been like drinking water through a fire hose
08:38yeah well I get to know the coach I fortunately played under his mentor John Schubert yes so John
08:45was a very detail-oriented guy very intense that you've alluded to program and I'll tell you what
08:51he is go go go and he is not stopped he will not stop until his offense is the way he wants it run
08:58and weight wants it to be nine yards on that first split ten yards they give all ten to Travis Homer
09:04minute twenty two timeouts trying it worse to get into field goal range the check down got deflected
09:11into the air Tyson Bajan was trying to deliver and it was Matt Dickerson who put that big paw up there
09:17to knock it down so third day it is third down and one I thought they only gave him nine on that first
09:23play indeed it was only nine so it was second and one now third and one we know that Cairo Santos can
09:30kick from distance but you'd love to get this ball down at least around the 35 yard line at the end of
09:36this first half run it to get the first down in a short situation with Homer it's a fresh set of downs
09:45with the clock ticking you see the Dolphins trying to keep Homer on the ground for an extra two or three seconds
09:50good opportunity to run this two-minute drill for Bajan and company
09:58now they're checked out it's Homer they're giving that to him so they'll keep taking it
10:05clock is down to 48 and Ben Johnson will use one of those two remaining timeouts
10:09obviously the starters for the most part sitting today but most of those starters got to go through
10:20that 70 play workout give me a sense of what you think Caleb is going to get out of these moments
10:24and what he's trying to get to with Ben Johnson well it's more reps I talked to Ben Johnson for
10:29a period of time after the workout was completed they're going to have him go through another 25 or
10:35so tomorrow and it's literally taking him through the cadence and there's a lot on his plate I mean
10:40it's the motions it's the shifts they're going to do a lot more of that offensively Jim this season
10:44and you saw Ben Johnson talking to him directly all right that way he can call the play say hey here's the coverage
10:50and this is where the where the plate caller in the quarterback they talk through things hey man I'm expecting this
10:57versus this coverage and they will talk through where Caleb will get a good vision of what his plate caller is expecting of him
11:04another deflected pass Bajit was looking for Steven Carlson that ended up falling just short it's going to be third and four with the clock stop
11:12that's one of the things that Caleb pointed out in terms of insight for Ben Johnson Caleb got frustrated at one point early in camp
11:19because things weren't going very smoothly his headset went out at one point while he's going to the line and he got a little frustrated
11:25Ben went up to him and said hey if your headset goes out give me the plays that you like give me the three or four things
11:32that if all things go haywire communication wise we can go to it screen for Alexander and they get the first down
11:39with 37 seconds left and just if you're wondering are they going to simplify this offense at any point as the season approaches
11:46no I mean this is a very complex offense they have overloaded him on purpose and Ben Johnson told me
11:52that I'd rather give him a ton now and have to peel it back than not give him too much Jim and say shoot we should have done more
12:00when things like that that that you bring up Adam or say the headset does go out and give me those three or four plays
12:07that's where Bennett as a coach and a play caller is going to say hey you know the personnel that's in the game
12:12we've already talked about three so let's say he's got 12 personnel with Loveland and Cole Komet in the game
12:18all right what's your top 12 personnel play we're going to expect you to call that when that happens again
12:23go to your best place son
12:25just a little bit of that insight and experience from Johnson
12:30here's Beijing throws over the middle it's up in the air it's picked off
12:35they were trying to find Samori Toure instead Patrick McMorris comes away with the interception for Miami
12:41they're trying to be better ball hawks they got Minka Fitzpatrick back from Pittsburgh he's back with Miami
12:48to add to that secondary a turnover for the Bears here and that's what I'd say for Torrey either you
12:53come down with it or nobody comes down with it yeah it's a tough play it's contested by by by Miami
12:59but you've got to fight through the football fight for the football you got to fight through coverage you
13:03know they're going to hand swipe it and so try to prevent the interception it was tough play good
13:09coverage all the way around and well executed on all accounts I thought Tyson made the right read
13:14everybody did their jobs there and unfortunately ends up in a turnover Ethan Bonner had very tight
13:19coverage for Miami on Samori Toure and it ends up with a McMorris pick so the Dolphins still have all
13:28three of their timeouts Jason Sanders has a huge leg you only have to get down to about the 39 40 yard line
13:36to get into his range Wilson gets swallowed up again it's Dominique Robinson on cue
13:43and this defensive line continues to play well in this first half for Chicago
13:48Dominique Robinson has absolutely flashed this training camp for the Chicago Bears and he just
13:55swallows up the quarterback right here remember guys he was a wide receiver for three years in college he
14:02he starts in college as a quarterback moves to receiver he's really only played defensive
14:08end for about six years before that he was a high school quarterback so think about all the changes
14:12he's had to make and I would imagine he was frustrated last year he had a bigger role two years ago
14:17was only used in six games last season yeah he will be used totally different in Dennis Allen's scheme
14:22they want their defensive ends bigger stronger which is why Booker what we talk about for him
14:27it's about maturing physically Robinson is getting there he's been filling out since he was a former
14:32quarterback and he told us last year he's still trying to gain weight there is Wilson the Bears front
14:38makes him have to run Booker chases him down Dolphins still have two timeouts and they'll use one of them
14:44he's still trying to gain weight here with 14 seconds left you are just on the cusp of Jason
14:48Sanders field goal range just some really good pursuit here by Austin Booker Jim mentioned him
14:54earlier he's always going 110 miles per hour that's what the Bears love about him and that's the jump
14:59he needs to make maybe doesn't always make the right decision but he's going to give you that motor and
15:04that effort same thing for him last year played about a quarter of the snaps as a rookie
15:08Matty Perflus always used the word instinctual to describe Austin Booker as a rusher you saw some
15:15of that raw talent last season he's he's relentless that's why I did classify him as a poor Mad Max
15:20Crosby we know Crosby and the Raiders that guy is 100 effort and Booker has that he's just got to get
15:27bigger and stronger again he came out a year early some people thought he should remain in school so
15:32he's just got to mature physically but if it marries up his size and his motor oh
15:38should have been a pick for Terrell Smith and it should have been a touchdown the other way
15:42he knows it too should have been a pick with that four four speed man
15:47and with that speed there was nobody in front of him that would have been a house call
15:51good ready way to jump on the football hey reads it instinctively just got to squeeze it
15:56just got to squeeze it maybe a couple more reps on the jugs machine a couple more reps but listen
16:01this guy is a state champion out of georgia 200 yard sprint just meter sprint 100 meter sprint i mean
16:10he's going to dream about that one tonight yeah that's going to be tough for smith to swallow
16:15remember he's battling right now for that cb2 spot
16:18fourth down and six they'll go for it here still have a timeout and it's not going to matter they
16:25sack him out of field goal range zach pickens shuts it down
16:29and i i credit robinson he's the one that forced zach wilson to step up in the pocket so good push
16:37on the outside by robinson seen a couple of flashes as stacy alluded to look at him right there that's
16:43what causes zach wilson to step up and then pickens cleans it up bears good deed to end this half
16:51and that's a mistake for zach wilson as well your infield goal range for a good
16:55long-legged kicker and you end up taking the play that you can't have on third down and then on fourth
17:02down as well the bears take over chance to do something with it here they can certainly throw for
17:08a hail mary or maybe try to go short and lateral
17:17goes short it's born in first down i don't know if he got out of bounds with time remaining
17:24he had the right idea to try to get to the sideline but that is going to be zeros on the clock
17:32let's see trying to make sure again this is something that can be helped by replay assist
17:37just to take a look if there's still time remaining
17:41they are going to put a second back on the clock
17:45so good job by scott novak and company again replay assist is more and more implemented now so you can
17:52have expedited reviews on plays like this you don't have to go for a minute to the monitor
17:57these expedited reviews sometimes take 15 seconds at most you see good job he stepped out with still a
18:03second left it's a good job by rookie and luther burden knowing the clock knowing the situation
18:08hey gets him an opportunity for for three points here what did santos i think santos hit uh what eight
18:14over 50 a season ago nfl average is 70 percent from 50 plus yards he was eight of nine
18:20he hit a 53 yarder at family fest last weekend this will be from 57 cairo santos with the boot and it is good
18:33one of the most reliable kickers in the nfl now in his sixth consecutive year with the bears
18:44wasn't as good of a year as we've come to know from santos last year but from distance he's as good as
18:50as they get and credit to bachin and burden who teamed up with six seconds left to make that quick
18:59play they got santos into field goal range and the bears tag on three points a fun first half
19:08flashes from both offense and defense we'll have plenty to talk about luke kanellis and jasmine baker
19:14will take care of you during our halftime segment remember we'll have george mccaskey on in the third
19:19quarter and a whole half to play in chicago in preseason game number one
19:31dolphins and bears were at the one turnover was the interception for
19:36chicago thrown by baje and off the deflection other than that we saw some flashes on offense we saw some
19:41flashes on the defensive end welcome back inside the broadcast booth adam jim and stacy just a
19:45comment from you guys what did you guys think from the first 30. hey loved the early defense what
19:49they were able to do obviously finished with points good situation and with the 57 yard field goal so a
19:55little bit of both were a lot of positive yeah i think tyson bajant for all intents and purposes was
20:00fairly efficient ran the offense as well as you can in the first preseason game for ben johnson and now
20:06we're going to see case keenum in this backup quarterback competition will be miami ball to
20:13start the second half we'll see more of the third and fourth string depth chart players this is jonathan
20:20kim the undrafted rookie out of michigan state who is working on a kicker roll
20:28and there will be a touchback this is going to go out to the 35 yard line that's the change this year
20:33on the kickoff so with all that you may have heard the jovial voice of uh the chairman of the chicago
20:38bears as well george mccaskey is kind enough to come into the broadcast booth and join us as he
20:43often does at least once a year once a preseason to give us kind of a state of the union so to speak and
20:49a little bit of uh excitement for the always as uh as always we appreciate the time george thank you
20:53i'm sorry i used to be in tv was i breaking the cardinal rule of tv don't talk when your mic we don't
20:59we don't mystify this stuff anymore the way we used to right it's a lot different now uh obviously
21:04as we get set for the season 29 days away a couple more preseason contests i wanted to get your
21:08impressions of the field first ben johnson kind of taking over can you kind of walk us through the
21:14process of getting ben and then your impressions of him as a head coach so far well we got the coach
21:19that everybody wanted us to get and that's not always the best choice but we think here we've married
21:24the best choice with the popular choice so we're very excited um he's demanding he's intense uh he's
21:32focused he's innovative he's smart and the players respect the hell out of him yep well you've talked
21:38about him being an agent of change and obviously for the players too for young caleb williams the
21:43impact you know i'm always going to talk about the quarterback and you've got such a young talented
21:48guy and ben johnson really will have a really give him a path a direction here to really bring out his
21:53talents yeah we're hoping that that quarterback head coach partnership is going to lead to a lot
21:59of success for the chicago bears how have you seen caleb grow george um he gets it he knows what it means
22:09to be the starting quarterback of the chicago bears jim you know that's a big responsibility not
22:13everybody can handle it he can handle it he gets it he's a great teammate he loves to put in the work
22:20and we're expecting big things from him george you're in charge of the franchise that has the
22:24most hall of famers and another hall of fame but not enough not enough sure there's a little backlog
22:28there we're uh we're talking to canton we want to address that backlog as soon as possible and we can
22:34start with jay hilgenberg i think it's a great starting point and then charles tillman you want me to
22:39keep going i think you got a nice laundry list of guys and listen you especially like me i'm going to
22:44advocate for peanut as as often as humanly possible i know obviously one of the emotional moments of
22:49the last year the emotional through lines of this organization was the passing of steve mcmichael
22:55obviously we know his impact on the field you know 40-year anniversary coming up for the super
23:00bowl championship but can you give us a sense of what you felt from your position watching the kind
23:06of inspirational moments that he's brought to us over the last several years during the late stages of
23:11his battles yeah he was the iron man of the bears and he loved playing football especially in chicago
23:16he was a fan favorite whether he was on the field for the bears or in the booth at wrigley uh giving
23:21the umpire what for so um he was a chicago and threw him through even though he is a good old boy
23:27from texas and the fans loved him one of the hall of famers at the university of texas and i think steve
23:32mcmichael would appreciate a play like that it's austin booker again as the defensive line has been the
23:37bright spot of the defense so far today yeah steve loved getting to the quarterback and you're showing
23:41the decal that we're going to wear on the back of the helmets this year to honor him and we're going
23:45to have a stencil on the field with his number on it and uh we want to make sure that he's properly
23:50recognized as one of the all-time greats in bear history i only wanted to bring this up because i
23:55thought it was just the right touch mrs mccaskey was a private person and she wouldn't want things to
24:04be made about her i think that was something that we all appreciated about her i think the touch of
24:10only wearing the original jerseys the no throwbacks this year just something that she really appreciated
24:16i thought that was a very nice subtle touch and probably one that she'd appreciate yeah we wanted
24:20to do something understated you know if she were to see this patch that the players are wearing on their
24:24jerseys she'd be calling me up and giving me what for what are you doing but we thought it was a proper
24:31and appropriate and respectful way to honor all that she has meant to our family and to the bears
24:37and to the greatest city in the world to the nfl as well obviously too i think that was something that
24:41we felt across the league last year yeah and you're looking for another 100 years that really was her
24:46message i know you talked about it i find it you know ironic here i am in this stadium i played in one
24:52of the last games of soldier field you know old soldier field and now you've got an opportunity to
24:56build just a beautiful facility excuse me up in arlington heights sounds like for the state the
25:02cook county everybody involved in the state of illinois could benefit from such a great project
25:07yeah but we've got to convince them that this is going to be great for the state and that's on us we
25:11need to do more work in that area we need to do more convincing kevin warren is leading that effort
25:16he's doing a great job he did it in minneapolis and we're confident that he can do it here
25:22in chicagoland so george it'll be 40 years since super bowl right the 85 bears 40 how are you going
25:30to honor honor those guys in that legacy yeah well as i said we want to honor steve's legacy he was a
25:36big part of that super bowl team of course and all the other guys we're inviting them back for our
25:41homecoming weekend for our september 8th monday night opener against the vikings and we're hoping that
25:46they're going to bring us some good luck on monday night football it's just always a pleasure to get
25:50some insight from you we appreciate how you handle your business and it's always appreciated when
25:55you get some insight from from the chairman so thank you so much as always well i don't want to
25:58leave your area without thanking you adam and you jim but stacy i'm so thrilled that you're here
26:03rounding out the crew thank you i said these are these are two of chicago's adopted children right
26:09even though it's a michigander and a canadian i feel like these are two of the adopted children of
26:13chicago they're chicagoans now thank you for welcoming me and making me a part of the family it's great
26:18it's been amazing thank you really good stuff thank you so much mr mccaskey always a pleasure
26:23three minutes plus in we got a flag off the interception let's see what the penalty marker is
26:28for scott novak and his crew thanks again to george mccaskey for just taking some time it's always
26:33appreciated anytime we get a little insight from the front office pass interference on the defense
26:40that'll be a spot foul and an automatic first down
26:46so pass interference negates the pick
26:49it was jack jones who came away with that interception but it's going to be
26:53negated because of the pi right there as you see impeding the progress of tyler scott
26:58so the bears have life at their own 32 yard line
27:04is case keenum in a quarterback they're on the number 11 and it's a handout for dion hankins
27:11as he pushes ahead hankins at the bottom of the depth chart the rookie out of texas state
27:17and it's second down for sticks as the guys are calling him because of one and one the sticks so case
27:22keenum the 13-year veteran now at the controls yeah and this was very intentional by the chicago bears
27:28bringing case keenum in and ryan poles sat down with ben johnson and they kind of looked at who
27:32was going to be available and they wanted a savvy veteran in the room somebody that when the coaches
27:38are in meetings can grab those quarterbacks jim and teach them how to operate on the field and off
27:43it's a it's a good pick hey the last two years he was mentoring the young cj stroud down there for
27:47the houston texas so he's well traveled he's played the highest of highs and obviously he's experienced
27:53some lows so he's a good place to really center the gravity of young quarterbacks like he did cj stroud
28:00dangerous play there as you saw john saunders jr deflect that ball it was a near pick but another
28:05flag prior to the pass holding on the defense number 41 that's a five-yard penalty and an automatic
28:12so another miami penalty this one against channing tyndall one of their linebackers it's defensive
28:18holding which came prior to the pass being delivered pass interference gets negated off
28:24a deflection defensive holding does not nor does illegal contact so those still stand even if the
28:30ball is deflected
28:34so fresh set it out with the help of some miami mistakes and hankins pushes ahead
28:41deandre swift is going to be the lead back and now reunited with ben johnson so there is some
28:47expectation of increase in the production of the running game i thought deandre was pretty serviceable
28:52last year but he expects to have a little bit of a boost in this office yeah brought over from
28:56philadelphia he played really well for the philadelphia eagles and obviously he has familiarity
29:01in the system led the bears last year 253 carries just under a thousand yards and had six rushing
29:07touchdowns but he doesn't have to come off the field he can stay out there and passing downs and
29:12very good hands to boot and a good all-around back hankins gets swallowed up by his fellow number 35
29:18there and john saunders jr a strong run takes him down to the 40 yard line and there were some
29:24questions that ben johnson needed answered in terms of his personnel right so they add
29:28the three guys in the middle tooney dolman and jackson and now this sort of backfield is taking shape
29:35he really believes they can be a wide zone run team where they're attacking space with that zone that
29:39offensive liner they can be a gap run team jim and so he likes the versatility that he's seeing thus
29:44far and the personnel groupings that you mentioned when you got two tight ends 12 personnel people
29:49forget detroit ran quite a bit of it they were 26 percent of 12 personnel so all those schemes are
29:55available nice play right there another good connection this time it's samori toure holding on to it
30:01and he'll take it all the way down inside the 15 yard line a good pickup for keenum and what does it
30:06come off of play action that stacy just talked about run run run hey now you've got the play
30:10action you're selling it and here it leads to the big play everything stacy taught you want it to look
30:16the same and then boom all sudden you get these big open spaces because everybody bites on it it marries
30:22up and looks the same and here you've got a big deep strike down the field ben johnson's offense
30:27kyle shanahan's offense same deal with all los angeles and sean mcveigh even if they're in shotgun there's
30:33still so much play action that goes off of their offenses hankins gets swallowed up at the line of
30:38scrimmage there is another flag thrown lions ran the ball 46 percent of the time that's top five last
30:45year play action was the heaviest legal shift on the offense two throws are moving at the same time
30:53that's a five-yard penalty first down we'll replay that first down jared goff had more touchdown passes
30:59in play action than any quarterback last year 15 of them for comparison caleb williams had five
31:04the heavier personnel the jumbo sets the lions used it the fourth most in the nfl 74 plays the bears
31:12only ran jumbo personnel 13 times all last yeah and it's going to translate here to the bears the bears
31:18were they were last in a lot of those statistics here we mentioned big plays that just had a chunk play
31:23bears were 29 last year so those deep play action big strikes down the field we saw with golf they're
31:29very explosive have explosive players like williams like amonra st brown you look at laporta the tight
31:36end there will be heavy influence in that and i thought stacy made a great point off the air it's like
31:42who's going to be the amonra st brown they may not have him here yet well he's a special player yeah he's
31:47a special player and his willingness to block on top of being a superstar is something you just can't
31:53replicate but they certainly have a lot of talent on this bears roster and i've got a lot of guys that
31:58can do a bunch of different things on the slant good connection keenum is able to find jade walker the
32:04rookie out of texas a m undrafted free agent he's about a yard shy the line to gain so on second and 15
32:11they get 14 yards to set up third and short and good run after the catch again it becomes an explosive
32:19play when you get that yards after the catch and a lot of it is being accurate with the football and
32:24certainly case keenum well experienced to do that third down and one hankins is the back keenum under
32:31center and joel wilson at tight end walker at receiver got two tight ends out there
32:41it is hankins and it's going to be a tackle for loss miami's front gets there
32:48the penetration by derrick mcclendon who's made a couple of nice plays bears will likely go for it
32:53on fourth down well miami was the ninth best run defense in the national football league last season
33:01a big turnaround with defensive coordinator anthony weaver and we saw a reflection of it there
33:06it's a solid defensive year they're top 10 in both pass rush and scoring last year on defense
33:13second year for weaver carlson in motion fourth and two keenum under pressure floats it walker can't hold
33:21on it was mcclendon bringing the pressure again he had a nice drive for miami and the bears unable to
33:28cash in from inside the five so keenum's first drive goes nearly the distance walker extending for it
33:41kid who was the heart and soul of texas a and m last season unable to hold out still a four-point game
33:58is brought to you by advocate healthcare blue moon chevy drive chicago.com pnc united airlines
34:12and by the illinois lottery
34:17back in chicago miami has a long field in front of its offense and it is quinn ewers the rookie out of
34:23texas their seventh round pick in at quarterback and a leap from alexander madison there's another
34:32flag plenty of those here in the second half as we go deeper into the depth charts holding
34:37offense number 68 half the distance to the goal
34:41josh preeb on the penalty and quinn ewers will be stuck inside of his own five-yard line opportunity for
34:48him three years at texas 27 and nine record i think this offense fits him well though steve sarkeesian
34:54the style of offense they run there's a lot of motions a lot of shifts obviously the quick strike
34:59plays so i think this is a really good spot for him to land in and i honestly think he's pushing
35:04zach wilson potentially be the two there
35:10first and 12 another handoff for alexander madison i can't not sing the hamilton song
35:17that's a carry anyway second down along coming up yeah ewers is something that's impressed the miami
35:21dolphins talking to their folks before the game is just his demeanor he's really poised really stoic
35:26he anticipates things and uh certainly walked into a nice situation with mike mcdaniel one of the
35:32things that's so underrated is his ability to connect with his quarterback and bring that
35:37confidence alive which is what he did with tua after all those coordinator changes that he went through
35:45high snap handled ewers delivers off target he put his receiver theo weiss jr the rookie out of missouri
35:53into a tough spot trey flowers came flying in the veteran defensive back yeah trey flowers he's
36:01bounced around the league but like you said it's a nice job to clean it up at the end of the probably
36:06wasn't the most accurate pass but trey flowers earned an opportunity again another taller corner
36:12that the bears targeted here this offseason pete carroll loves his tall corners and flowers had some
36:18good productive seasons with seattle that's a veteran hard-hitting quarterback he's played safety in
36:23college as well third down at five it's yours on the slant it's broken up josh blackwell lunging into
36:32the intended target aj hennig the lincoln way east alum the local product who played at northwestern
36:40he got stopped by blackwell there adam and jim one of the things dennis allen did when he
36:45gave this defense a message is he went all the way back into history all the way back to 1997 and he
36:53looked at the 16 times the bears made the playoffs 14 of those he told his players those were top 10 bears
37:01defenses monsters of the midway and that message has resonated jim with this group and he said it's
37:07their obligation to respect history heck of a pun 54 yards it'll be jp richardson trying to maneuver
37:18okay that was an impressive thing from allen 48 seasons 16 playoff appearances 14 of those 16 top 10 defenses
37:32checking with the newest member of our team jasmine baker hello jasmine
37:36the bears have been showing support for the next generation of female athletes throughout training
37:40camp they've invited five high school girls flag football teams to come and watch practice and these
37:46players are getting a vip access a chance to meet bears coaches and players and to top that all off
37:53president and ceo kevin warren and his wife greta are donating brand new cleats to every team that comes
37:59the bears are committed to backing the rise of girls flag here in illinois
38:03back to you one of the fastest going sports in america right now high schools are adding black
38:07for both boys in the olympics as well soon it's absolutely huge i had an opportunity to go cover
38:13it down in birmingham when they had some of the world championships down there diana flores the greatest
38:18female player are you kidding me out of mexico and she's like the tom brady of flag can't wait for it in
38:2520 28. tom had said it in fact he said that about diana good pressure that time by grayson murphy for
38:32miami their defense continues to pad on some pressure against this bears front the offensive line is going
38:39to be a discussion point from start to finish this year obviously beefed up the interior of it with the
38:45veterans added ozzy trapillo on the perimeter you hope that darnell wright continues to stay healthy
38:51but the big additions are on the interior to help the run game yeah bringing in uh dolman and jonah
38:56jackson we have talked enough about him played uh for the detroit lions was a pro bowl player people
39:02forget that before he got injured for the la rams a season ago and then like what you said about ozzy
39:08trapillo i think it's kind of leaning that way that potentially he could be the starting left tackle
39:14and i think stacy in my opinion when you've got this guy joe tooney a four-time all pro player tied in
39:20with that rookie i think ozzy will pleasantly surprise a lot of people what he potentially
39:26could do yeah not to mention a four-time super bowl champion yeah patriots and chiefs ozzy's a good
39:32just a good football player he is not a typical rookie is what i would say
39:38he's protecting a third down and long for keenum under pressure and he's able to get rid of it at the
39:45very least it'll be out of bounds near midfield it's fourth down so this competition at right
39:50excuse me left tackle it's real it's real and braxton jones we saw him earlier they're going to
39:56rotate those guys but the important point here is this is the first week that braxton jones has been
40:02back 100 he's been rolling at about 80 percent coming off that fibula fracture on the left side
40:08from last season that he had to have surgery for so are the bears going to weigh ozzy versus braxton
40:14from last season or ozzy versus braxton from right now through training camp because he hasn't really
40:19been 100 until this week yeah multiple injuries for jones last year including the one that ended his
40:24season against detroit tori taylor gets it inside the five and it's going to flirt with that one yard line
40:34but it's going to head into the end zone we'll check the penalty marker that was thrown at the 15
40:39on the far side of the field during the kick holding receiving team number 46 at the distance of the
40:45goal push down punchback goes to the 20 this will go back to the 10 because of the miami
40:51defensive penalty taylor thought he could have pinned that one inside the five
41:08bears preseason football is brought to you by shell the official fuel partner of the chicago bears
41:21bears defense last season did show some improvements the run defense was porous but as the
41:27year went on and even matt iberkloos was fired this is still the top 10 scoring defense there was some
41:33improvement over the course of the year and obviously the talent is there for dennis allen too
41:38they have talent you look at the you like the secondary with jalen johnson when he returns
41:43i mean we haven't talked enough about spidey i mean their nickelbacks signed him to an extension
41:48and kyler gordon the guy's got blitz he gets turnovers on the football strip sack fumbles they have
41:54and then really it's about the health of brisker they've got to get brisker healthy because kevin
42:00fired he led their team in tackles that guy is a very active safe so that secondary is very good on the
42:05back end great play there by trey flowers is hoping to add some depth to it we joked with kevin the
42:10other day it's like hey it's great that you had 130 tackles a career high but if you're the safety of
42:16a team and you're leading the team in tackles that means the run defense probably wasn't particularly
42:20good he said he wants to get that number closer to 80 and let the defensive linemen and linebackers have
42:25more opportunities on shorter plays screen pass and that was dropped incomplete looking for alexander
42:33baddison adam if you ask and jim any position group they're going to tell you we're the heart and soul
42:38of our defense this secondary actually believes it and it's an interesting conversation around
42:44jaquan brisker with his concussion history you know we asked dennis allen are there different
42:49teaching points for him because it was a very serious concussion a vestibular concussion last
42:54season it affected some of the cognitive things that he experienced and he had to do some retraining
42:59there they want him to keep the head out of it but they don't want to change his play style they want
43:04jaquan brisker the violent player that he is just keep the head out of it on third down and long for
43:10yours still looking for his first completion that ball's loose it is out it is the bears that have
43:16it power eckles ends up with it and it was austin booker who made the impact to knock it away from
43:23yours again austin booker is having himself a day and one of the things the dolphins pride themselves on
43:33is their speed i mean his ability to come off the edge and chase he has been on
43:40pursuit and in pursuit all day long and the strip sack here and a heads-up play by eckles dennis allen's
43:48got to be pleased it's the effort the guy's non-stop he's going to finish till the play ends i don't know
43:53if you call that a swan dive i don't know that technique but it was good to create the forced
43:57fumble three sacks and a forced fumble for austin booker about that powers echo the former north
44:03carolina tarheel played for mac brown my old buddy and uh broadcast partner tackled the texas longhorn
44:10which i think mac probably feels a little bit uh torn by you see case keenum trying to get
44:17everybody lined up it's benedette for the time being at left tackle now for ben johnson
44:22first and goal chance for the lead for chicago
44:30hankins gets the first crack at it and the front for miami is able to penetrate impressively
44:38good job by matt dickerson has made a couple of nice plays here in the third
44:44joe wilson the tight end's got to be a little bit tougher at the point of attack there you mentioned
44:48uh the left tackle there be more forceful you know what's coming downhill and this is where you
44:53got to get the push right here this is where it matters we saw eric b enemy the new running backs coach
44:59for the bears obviously a lot of success in kansas city had a stint in washington was at ucla last year
45:07as the offensive coordinator and assistant head coach
45:13and a flag thrown it's going to be a procedure penalty against the bears
45:17have to clean this up especially in the red zone
45:20false start offense number 78 that's a five-yard penalty second down that's joshua miles the former
45:26arizona cardinal and new york giant who they tagged for the false start so you got the third string guys
45:32on this offensive line in right now benedette miles ricky stromberg the former washington commander is out
45:38there as well you'll see bates mcfadden glazer and karana amagaji excuse me on the offensive line in this
45:49second half
45:53trying to see if the dolphins are playing man or zone with that motion from hankins screen pass side arm
45:59from keenum trying to keep his feet was two ray and another flag is thrown from the far side this is
46:05off sides lining up in the neutral zone against miami so outside defense number 42 that's a five-yard penalty
46:13second down now goes right back to the five yard line and second a goal from the five
46:19nice little sidearm here though i thought keno yeah he you know that's what a veteran does he sees uh
46:25the flash of color coming to the outside because typically on those screens you're not going to get a
46:30a lot of hands on a man on a line of scrimmage he's too far out so you've got to have the good arm
