00:00In this video, I'm going to show you how to play the kashaka shaker.
00:03There are many different ways that you can play this instrument.
00:06You can place it in your hand and shake it like this.
00:09One, two, three, four.
00:11Or one and two and three and four and.
00:14But the traditional way to play this instrument is like this.
00:17So you place your hand out.
00:19In between your middle finger and your ring finger, you put the rope.
00:22Your ring finger comes over to hold the cast ball in place.
00:27This rope comes around in between your thumb and your pointer finger.
00:32Really, you want that cast ball to be in the palm of your hand.
00:35The balls should be able to make contact with each other.
00:39So this instrument is adjustable.
00:41So we can just make a loose knot like this.
00:44And then to play it, we're going to fling this part over.
00:49And we're going to go kash.
00:51So kash.
00:54Kash.
00:55Shake.
00:55Shake.
00:56And when you're first doing this, you know, you may want to play slowly and then speed up
01:01as you get more comfortable.

01:15But once you're more comfortable with it, you can then have one in the right hand, one in
01:19the left hand.
01:20So that instrument we've just played with is from Indonesia.
01:23But these kashaka shakers are from West Africa.
01:26So to play them in both hands, we're going to do the same thing, but in reverse.
01:30Put our ring finger over.
01:32And the challenge is to try and play both instruments at the exact same time.
01:37So that they knock at the same time and you shake at the same time.
01:42It may take a bit of practice, but keep going and you'll get there.
01:45So let's give it a go now.
01:48Kash.

01:52Each instrument, when it's from a different region, also sounds very different.
01:56For example, this one sounds like this.
02:00But this one from Indonesia sounds very different.
02:02It's got a different clacking tone and it also sounds different when you shake it.
02:16And then this one from Japan sounds even more different.
02:19So this is actually made from hemp.
02:21The balls are much bigger, which allow for better grip, much better for beginners.
02:26And it's also very easy to catch because the balls are bigger.
02:31But when you shake it, the sound isn't as loud in comparison to the other instruments like
02:35Or
