Davide Bonomo, a professional Italian flutist and teacher, introduces the flute and piccolo in this video, explaining their differences to help you understand the basics. The piccolo, the smallest and highest-pitched instrument in the orchestra, is made of wood, steel, or silver and has two parts: head joint and body. The larger flute consists of three parts—head joint, body, and foot—and plays an octave lower. While both are traditionally played, Davide also explores how experimenting with their parts can create unique sounds.

00:00My name is Davide Bonomo, I'm from Italy and I'm a professional flute player.
00:04I play in orchestras, I love to teach flute and music to my students.
00:08Musicians can use music as medicine for their life, so if you're a musician,
00:13or if you want to become a musician, remember the most important thing,
00:17that you can use music and your instrument as medicine for your life.
00:21This is when you are upset, when you are happy.
00:23It doesn't matter if you play flute or violin, we're speaking about music.
00:28Piccolo is the smallest instrument of flute's family.
00:31Usually it's made by boot, but you can find silver or steel piccolos.
00:36In my opinion, wood piccolos play better and easier than steel or silver piccolos.
00:41It's divided in two parts.
00:43The adjoint in the wood version wouldn't have the mouthpiece,
00:46so we put our lolly directly to the adjoint.
00:49If I play along, the adjoint sounds like a whistle.
00:55And the body, which has keys.
00:57These keys allow us to play different notes.
00:59So if I put the adjoint into the body, we play piccolo.
01:12Piccolo has a very very smooth sound, very light sound, but it's very very high.
01:17And it is the highest instrument of orchestra.
01:20So it means that if you play piccolo and orchestra, everyone can hear you.
01:23Especially the second violin, which are exactly in front of you.
01:26Flute is divided as a human body in three parts.
01:30The first part, which is the most important, is the adjoint.
01:33In the adjoint, we can find the mouthpiece.
01:36And in the mouthpiece, all where we blow to obtain the flute sound.
01:40With the adjoint, we can produce the flute sound.
01:43Actually, if I want, I can create melodies only with this part.
01:55It's very difficult to do, but it's not impossible.
01:58For playing easier, we add the other two parts, which is the biggest part.
02:03And it has the most of keys.
02:05With these keys, we can play different notes.
02:08Flute is the smallest part.
02:09We can find the other keys of our flute.
02:12And in general, we use these keys for the low register.
02:16We can produce sound with the adjoint.
02:18Let's try with the body.
02:20Maybe it works.
02:27It doesn't sound.
02:28If we put our adjoint into the body, and into the foot, we have the flute.
02:35We blow in the adjoint, and with the keys in body and foot, we can play different notes.
02:48We saw piccolo and flute.
02:53I would like to see together the differences between these two instruments.
02:57Piccolo is smaller than flute.
03:00This is why piccolo plays higher than flute.
03:04Actually, piccolo plays one octave higher, exactly one octave higher than flute.
03:09With piccolo, the lowest note is the D.
03:12In piccolo, we have two parts, and in flute, we have three parts.
03:16Because piccolo is smaller, it means it has very little variation, for example in our blowing,
03:23produces a bigger effect in our sound, in our intonation, in the same flutes.
03:28Thank you for watching!
