00:00Today I'm going to be comparing two of our shamanic drums. The first one we have is a goat skin shamanic drum
00:06and this one over here is cow skin. On first glance, they both look very different.
00:12The skins are treated in a different way. Even though this one is cow skin, you can have cow skin that is white.
00:19So the grain is slightly different in both of these drums, but the main difference is that the goat skin is actually thinner.
00:26If you feel it, it feels like it's got more sort of bounce to it. Whereas the cow's hide is a lot more firm,
00:35it's a lot more strong and it's thicker and that will of course affect the sound.
00:41These drums vary from about £50 to £65 whereas the cow's hide is more expensive and is about £120 upwards depending on the size.
00:51So we have different sizes for this one and styles and we also have different sizes for this one.
00:56The goat skin drum I'm holding now is made in Indonesia whereas the cow's skin drum is made in Pakistan.
01:03The beaters that they come with slightly vary. So this is the beater that comes with the goat's hide drum.
01:08It's a wooden handle that has been varnished and it has a soft end. The cow's hide one, it's slightly more firm
01:15but it's pretty much the same at the end. It's very nice, it's very natural.
01:18So now I'm going to play the goat's hide shamanic drum so that you can hear how it sounds
01:21and I'm going to try and play with a slight variation so that you can hear different tones.
01:48There's a little technique that you can use when playing your shamanic drum and it gives it a lovely tremolo sound.
01:54So what you do is when you hit it, you can give it a little shake and it sounds like this
01:59and you get a really nice sound effect.
02:02Another difference to both of these drums is the back.
02:05So with the goat's hide you can see it's rope tied.
02:09It doesn't really make too much difference to the sound, it's more aesthetic, it's how it looks
02:13and I think it looks quite nice. There is a slight fraying on the rope whereas the cow's hide is more uniform
02:20so you can see all the way around it the animal skin is tied.
02:25This is the traditional way of making these drums.
02:27So now we're going to be playing the cow's hide drum and I must admit that I do prefer this one to the other one.
02:33I like the sound more, it sounds deeper, it has more resonance in the low end, in the bass tones
02:38and another thing to note as well is that every single one of these drums will have a slightly different tone.
02:45Each one is completely unique and the tone will always be different between every drum
02:49because of how the skin is treated, because of slight variation in size
02:53so you'll never get the exact same sound from another drum even if you purchase it twice.
02:58Let's play and see how it sounds.
03:08I love the sound of this drum. It sounds beautiful. It's got a really full sound.
03:25I don't know why but when I beat the other drum I feel like I'm playing a drum.
03:29When I play this one I feel like I'm deeply connected to the drum.
03:34It makes me feel focused. It makes me feel like I'm in the moment.
03:38Anyway, I hope you like this video and if you are interested in getting one of these drums
03:42I will put a link in the description so that you can check those out.
03:45Thank you so much for watching. See you soon.
