01:13Today on iCrime, a brutal robbery.
01:19A lady versus the law.
01:21Get on the ground!
01:23And this.
01:24I'm Elizabeth Vargas and this is iCrime.
01:37In Long Beach, California, an officer is called to respond to a ranting woman who is impeding traffic.
01:58A nearby driver records the action on his phone as 22-year-old Carmen Mata tells the responding patrol car she's ready for a confrontation.
02:09Open this back door! Open this back door!
02:11She heads back into the intersection as she taunts the approaching officer.
02:17You wanna be asleep, bitch?
02:19Oh, okay, what's up?
02:20The officer keeps his distance.
02:22What's up, bitch? What's up?
02:24What a f***?
02:26But Mata starts to get physically aggressive.
02:31She heads back to confront drivers in the intersection.
02:35What?
02:35What?
02:36After the officer follows, Mata returns her attention to him, shadowboxing her way across the street.
02:45What's up? What's up?
02:47Mata leans forward to spit at the officer.
02:52And that's his cue to act.
02:54He comes toward her with the baton.
02:57She backs up, but she's not backing down.
03:00The officer hits Mata in the leg with the baton, but she stays on her feet.
03:07The officer tries again to subdue Mata as the drivers honk their horns.
03:13Another hit, but Mata seems unfazed.
03:17Just get on the ground!
03:18Get on the ground!
03:20Mata isn't going to give up that easily.
03:22The officer tries handcuffs on her, but Mata continues to fight.
03:27The officer's words seemingly have no effect.
03:32Mata carries on as the officer tries to put handcuffs on her.
03:37What's up, bitch?
03:40What?
03:40What's she trying to get at me for?
03:43What's up?
03:44What's up, bitch?
03:45A bystander finally rushes in to help.
03:48Then backup arrives.
03:52Finally, they manage to get Mata in cuffs.
03:55And yet, still, she struggles as she's led the police cruiser.
04:04Even more backup arrives.
04:07And they may need it.
04:10Mata was first taken to a hospital and was found to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
04:15She was charged with multiple counts of resisting an officer
04:18and sentenced to 120 days in jail and three years probation.
04:23In downtown Los Angeles, a security camera captures a brutal robbery.
04:30A resident enters the building, unaware that he's being followed.
04:34Seconds later, a man in a hood appears behind him.
04:37As the unsuspecting victim presses the elevator button, the robber grabs for the man's watch.
04:44When the man turns, the robber punches him in the face, knocking the victim to the ground
04:50and sending his wallet and sunglasses flying.
04:54The robber goes to remove the Rolex from the man's wrist.
04:58But when the man stirs, the suspect hits him again.
05:02The robber repeatedly strikes the man in the face, ultimately rendering him unconscious.
05:07Finally, the hooded man takes what he came for and runs off, leaving the victim knocked out cold on the floor.
05:16The victim was treated for his injuries and recovered.
05:19Meanwhile, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Pablo Garcia, was arrested for robbery and held on $180,000 bail.
05:28Police believe Garcia may have assaulted other victims and asked anyone who might recognize him to come forward.
05:38A lot of people say that California drivers don't have the best reputation.
05:44Well, this next video isn't going to change that.
05:46One driver in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles goes on a one-man demolition derby
05:52that racks up a total of six, count them, six collisions.
05:56We're going to take you through them one by one.
06:02As seen on a security camera across the street,
06:06the driver of this blue Mustang, 22-year-old Seth Point,
06:10rams into the back of an SUV waiting at a stoplight.
06:14A box truck and a pickup slow down to block the Mustang.
06:19When the driver of the SUV gets out, Point backs up several feet and then stops.
06:23The driver of the box truck, Paul San Pietro, records the scene on his phone.
06:30Watch as the Mustang backs up and gently touches bumpers with the pickup.
06:35Get back in your car, man. He's going to hit you.
06:38Point reverses and hits the pickup again with a lot more force than the first time.
06:45Point then revs the Mustang's engine and steers directly into San Pietro's truck.
06:50San Pietro then gets out of his truck, still recording,
06:56in time to see the Mustang jump the median and back into a Porsche,
07:01traveling in the opposite lane.
07:06The Mustang then shoots back across the median,
07:09only to slam into the SUV again.
07:12Steam now pours out from under the battered hood of the Mustang as it comes to a stop.
07:21San Pietro shouts instructions to the driver of the SUV as she gets out of her vehicle.
07:26Back away!
07:28Get away!
07:29Move!
07:29Behind the wheel of his Mustang,
07:31Point hits four vehicles six times in less than a minute.
07:35The car lurches back and forth as Point tries to get it to move again,
07:40but it's either too damaged to move or it's somehow stuck to the SUV.
07:45That doesn't stop Point from making the effort anyway.
07:51Let's take a look at those collisions one more time from the security camera across the street.
07:56Collision number one.
07:57Notice how the other cars in front of the SUV move ahead when the light changes.
08:04They haven't seen a thing.
08:06Collision number two happens after the SUV driver gets out of her car and Point backs up his Mustang.
08:13He then taps the front bumper of the pickup with the rear bumper of his Mustang,
08:18as if trying to draw the driver out from behind the wheel of the car.
08:24If that's what he has in mind, it works.
08:26You can see the driver of the pickup gets out.
08:29Point then hits the truck again with his rear bumper and hard.
08:33Now we have collision number three.
08:36The Mustang then rams into San Pietro's truck for collision number four.
08:41Collision number five happens when the Mustang jumps across the median and crashes into the Porsche.
08:50Point drives back across the median for collision number six.
08:56The Porsche pulls up on the sidewalk, something we didn't see in San Pietro's video before.
09:03Only from this angle, we can see where all four cars sit damaged after six collisions.
09:11No serious injuries were reported.
09:13Point was found guilty of two charges, reckless driving and hit and run.
09:18He received a sentence of two days' time served in jail, 12 months probation, and 20 days of community labor.
09:26However, the motivation for his actions remains unknown.
09:31Next on iCrime, a hair salon set on fire.
09:37And this.

11:41In our next video, chaos erupts at a construction site for a police training center in Atlanta.
11:55Activists are calling the site Cop City and they don't want it built.
12:00Declaring that it militarizes law enforcement and destroys the local forest.
12:05The video shows dozens of protesters flooding the site for the new public safety training center.
12:12Protesters are seen changing into black clothing and then entering a fenced area.
12:18As police lock the gates, rioters hurl Molotov cocktails and what looks like fireworks at them.
12:26Smoke rises over the property as a car and a tractor are set ablaze.
12:31Smaller fires burn around the site.
12:34Authorities claim more than 100 demonstrators invaded the construction area.
12:39This is just the latest in a series of actions against the $90 million facility.
12:46Demonstrators have camped in the forest for a year, opposing its construction.
12:50Our next video comes to us from Toronto, Canada, where a security camera captures an arsonist at work.
12:59A hooded man has broken into this hair salon in the Richmond Hills District of Toronto.
13:05He walks through the salon, pouring out a container of what looks like gasoline.
13:10He douses the floor with the stuff, making sure it covers everything in sight.
13:15Now he adds a spark of fire to the mix, and the place explodes in flames.
13:23The entire salon is engulfed in seconds.
13:26Smoke begins to fill the room as flames continue to burn bright.
13:31Thankfully, the chairs are all empty.
13:34The fire department arrived quickly to put out the blaze, and there were no injuries reported.
13:39Unfortunately, the man who set the fire was not caught, and an arson investigation is ongoing.
13:44Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers.
13:50In our next video, a confrontation with police in Park City, Utah, leads to a lawsuit and reprimands for the officers involved.
14:00Exhibit A from the plaintiff?
14:02A video of the encounter recorded by his 15-year-old son.
14:06Officers respond to a report of an argument between two neighbors over a 15-year-old boy riding his motorized bicycle up and down the street.
14:17A witness claims that the boy's father, Michael Franchek, had a gun.
14:22When the police arrive at his home, Franchek is more interested in asking questions than answering them.
14:30But he's unwilling to give any information in return.
14:38Let's go ahead and talk about the incident that you had out here a few minutes ago.
14:41Don't know what you're talking about.
14:42Okay.
14:43When Franchek heads back inside his house, Officer Jim Rodriguez tries to restrain him.
14:49No, no.
14:49Hey.
14:50Whoa, whoa, whoa.
14:51Get out here.
14:52Whoa, whoa.
14:52In the ensuing struggle, Rodriguez's body cam falls to the floor inside Franchek's home.
14:59I can't do anything.
15:00You just came in my house.
15:01No warning.
15:02As the standoff between Franchek and the officers continues, he calls out to his 15-year-old son to record what's happening.
15:11Jack, come here.
15:12Run outside.
15:14Jack comes down the stairs, his phone already recording as Rodriguez, Officer Craig Proctor, and Sergeant Cameron Thor try to pull his father outside.
15:26Outside.
15:27You're violating my Fourth Amendment.
15:28Hey, you guys cannot come in here without a certified.
15:30Quiet.
15:31As Franchek continues to resist, a taser is used to get him to comply.
15:36Outside, so he's talking.
15:36Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay.
15:38Enough.
15:38Enough.
15:39Enough.
15:40I didn't do anything.
15:41You just tased me for no reason.
15:43Once his father is taken outside to the front porch, Jack records him getting handcuffed.
15:49This is unbelievable.
15:50Franchek tells his son what to do.
15:52Jack, follow me and record.
15:54Following his father's instructions, Jack is admonished by Officer Cameron Thor.
15:58Like his father, Jack does not back down.
16:02Give us space.
16:03Okay.
16:04What's your space?
16:05What's your space?
16:06Jack, Jack, record the whole thing.
16:07You're recording.
16:08Give us space.
16:09In the parking lot, Franchek is outraged that he is in handcuffs.
16:14I didn't resist.
16:15I know.
16:15I didn't do it.
16:16You know.
16:17See, he acknowledged that you can resist, Jack.
16:19Yeah, I have an on video.
16:20Proctor and Franchek debate what just happened.
16:22He told you to stop, right?
16:24He did not say anything of the sort.
16:26Jack's efforts to document the proceedings are not proving to be popular with all the officers.
16:31What's your name?
16:33Step back.
16:33I'm not.
16:34Look, look, look.
16:34You just touched.
16:35You can record all you want, but you're stepping back right now.
16:38The back and forth continues as Franchek is placed in a squad unit.
16:42When asked, Jack refuses to identify himself.
16:45What's your name?
16:46I do not need to give you that.
16:47Jack follows the officers going back inside the Franchek residence to retrieve the lost body cam.
16:53He gets a stern warning from Rodriguez.
16:55If you try and come past me, you're going to go on the ground face first.
16:58Do you understand me?
16:59Okay, and then I'm going to file a complaint against you.
17:01Things are only getting more heated between the Francheks and the police.
17:06Find out how it all shakes out when we come back.

20:51Before the break, we showed you what happened when police showed up at the front door of Michael Franchek.
20:57Officers were responding to reports of a dispute between the older Franchek and a neighbor.
21:02One witness reported that Franchek had a gun.
21:05When the older Franchek refused to answer questions, police entered his house, tased him, and handcuffed him.
21:13Not to worry, though.
21:14Franchek's teenage son, Jack, is recording everything.
21:19Go grab your camera, yes.
21:20I'm allowing you to do that.
21:21During the struggle with Franchek, Officer Rodriguez dropped his body cam,
21:25so he goes back into Franchek's home to retrieve it.
21:30Franchek's 15-year-old son, Jack, has his phone recording the entire incident.
21:34His face has been obscured on Rodriguez's body cam video because Jack is a minor.
21:40I have three cops on me, and I'm 15 years old.
21:43Rodriguez reminds Jack why the police were called in the first place.
21:47So you were the one driving up and down the street on the motorcycle?
21:50Jack is quick to come to his own defense.
21:53Uh, I was on my gas bicycle.
21:55Okay, that's a gas-powered vehicle.
21:56You have to have a driver's license.
21:57Um, no, you don't.
21:58Not when it's 50cc and you have a permit for it.
22:01Still pleading his point, Jack cuts through the house to come out of the other side,
22:05where his father is being detained.
22:08Once there, Jack recounts to Officer Proctor what started the whole incident.
22:13Another bicycle rider allegedly threatened him.
22:17He was on his little road bike.
22:18He said, get out of the way or I'm going to beat your ass.
22:20Proctor tries to explain why the police response escalated against Jack's father.
22:25What we got told is a gun was involved in this incident.
22:28So we're going to take this a little...
22:29No gun was involved, not at all.
22:31As the back and forth continues, the officers begin to lose patience with Jack.
22:36We have to control this situation.
22:37Do you have a stretch warrant?
22:38We don't need a stretch warrant.
22:39Yes, you do.
22:40You might want to go to school and learn the law.
22:41I already know the law.
22:43No, you don't.
22:43Jack learns his father's fate and it's not good.
22:47Where is he going?
22:48To Southern County Jail.
22:50Eventually, Proctor gives up on trying to explain matters to Jack.
22:54I'm more willing to talk to you, but I'm not going to play the stupid games.
22:58Okay?
22:58You kind of are.
22:59Okay, we're done.
23:00Okay.
23:00Franchek is loaded onto a stretcher to be examined for injuries by paramedics before taken to jail.
23:08After an internal investigation, officers Thor and Rodriguez received reprimands for violating departmental policy, as did a third officer on the scene.
23:18The violations were from health risks to Franchek after being tased, interfering with Jack Franchek's videotaping of the incident, and improper report preparation, among others.
23:32According to the city attorney's office, Cameron Thor is no longer employed by the Park City Police Department.
23:38Jack Franchek is in college and plans to study law.
23:42Jack Franchek is in college and plans to study law.
24:12Jack Franchek, is in college and plans to study law.
24:13Jack Franchek...
