00:07Wallsend was among 50 other towns from across the entire UK that were nominated for building thriving local economies, with six category winners.
00:17The town came out on top, and so we decided to spend a day in Wallsend to find out what makes it an award-winning area.
00:25So this is Wallsend High Street. We are the winners of the Let's Celebrate Towns High Street Transformation Award.
00:33It's a national award which the Wallsend High Street has won, down to the hard work and determination of the people of Wallsend.
00:39It's a great place to come to, and I'd like to thank everybody that comes here, visits, shops here.
00:44If you want to start a business, come into Wallsend, because it's a community.
00:48I'm Shelley, and this is Shelley's Delia, and I've been here for nine months now.
00:54I chose to open a business in Wallsend because my partner has a business next door, and then this came available, and I thought it would be the perfect spot.
01:03I used to come here when I was young to Park Road Bakery and come and get all my weekly treats, my cakes.
01:11There's a college at the bottom where the students come, and it's a place for them to come and hang out.
01:18We had Wayne in from the council, told me that he is a representative of the local area.
01:23He gave me lots of information. He got us on a WhatsApp group where a lot of the other shop owners are in the area,
01:30so we can have discussions about things, and if there's complaints graffiti and things like that, we can talk with each other and talk to Wayne.
01:37And Wayne came forward with the offer to do our shutters because we're looking very dingy.
01:43So, he's had that done, and they're all looking beautiful, so outside the shop's looking wonderful now.
01:49The people from the shipyards used to come here years ago, and now we have the students who are working on the wind turbines coming here.
01:57So, it's part of history, and it's part of the future.
02:01Right, my name is Ehab, and my nickname is called Bob, as a Bobby everybody knows.
02:06And we've been here, this is, I would say 10 years, exactly till now.
02:11Now, we offer good repairs. We also give warranty with any products, any repairs.
02:18Also, we sell phones, we repair phones, we trade in, you know.
02:24But most of my job, I would say repairing-wise, you know, we got good repair jobs all the time.
02:29You know, the High Street here is like a family. Everybody know each other, you know, especially for all local businesses.
02:34They all help each other in a good way. You know, you can tell all the High Street.
02:40And luckily, we got the winner this year. So, it was the best High Street.
02:44And we appreciate this, because Mr. Wayne is working too hard as well.
