00:00A new regeneration framework sets out how Newcastle and Gateshead could change over
00:05the next 25 years. The draft plan proposes 16,000 homes, improved transport links and
00:11billions of pounds in investment by 2050. It divides the area into eight zones,
00:16each with priorities for housing, public spaces, jobs and connections. These are
00:20ambitions, not approved building projects. Along the river, the Tyne Hart zone would
00:25link Newcastle Quayside, Gateshead Quays and the Central Bridges. Plans include 1,500 homes,
00:30an arena on Gateshead Waterfront and possible water taxis, riverside seating and public art.
00:36Two new footbridges are proposed elsewhere including one near Redview Bridge,
00:40another one linking Spillers Quay with the South Bank. The framework proposes bringing unused upper
00:46floors and historic buildings in Newcastle back into use alongside changings around New Bridge
00:51Street and Monument Metro Station. Gateshead Town Centre could gain 2,000 new homes,
00:57new parks and a refurbished interchange. The plan aims to reconnect streets around the former A167
01:02flyover with parts potentially becoming a greener corridor. Sport's another major question. The
01:08document calls for a world-class stadium but does not choose between redeveloping St James' Park
01:12or building a new home for Newcastle United. Other zones focus on universities, healthcare,
01:17creative industries and new neighbourhoods. The largest housing figures include 6,000 homes in
01:23the eastern urban villages and 3,750 in the western urban villages.
