00:00Joey Jr. has, he's very intense, and I was so, I smiled when I heard him say the exact same thing I said earlier.
00:06People begin to know what the guys in practice are doing against them, and it's a welcome, welcome to have them go against the New England Patriots.
00:15What you're going to see as a coach, these coaches are going to get a chance to now see who's retaining everything that they've taught them.
00:22They're going to see how guys react in different situations.
00:25Yes, guys get there, and they start to cheat because they know what the steps are.
00:32They learn those things, but when you go against a new set of guys, you don't get that chance anymore.
00:37You don't get that little choice of, oh, yeah, I know what they're going to do.
00:41You have to go out there and play all of your fundamentals and go all through your head and be able to make the thing happen real quickly.
00:48Now, they're going to find out which young guys really got it, which young guys have gotten this stuff
00:53and now can just go out there and play the game of football.
00:57I say it many times when you're thinking on the football field, you're behind.
01:00If you're not reacting, you're going to have problems.
01:03They get the chance to see that now, and I think as the offensive coaches and the defensive coaches, they both see it.
01:09And then the thing of Dan Quinn talking to the coaches about improving stuff,
01:13and Joe recognizes it's like it's not all about being right.
01:17You know, it's finding, like, the right situation, right solution.
01:20Coaches do sometimes feel, because I said it, it's supposed to happen.
01:25And a lot of times when you say it, it doesn't happen.
01:29So this is that next step.
01:32They're looking at guys now.
01:33They're finding out who's doing things as they go against their teammates on a day-to-day basis, daily basis.
01:39Hell, offensive players talk to defensive players after practice,
01:43and the defensive players are telling them what they're doing, so they're figuring those things out.
01:47But now you're going to be able to now take that next step and say,
01:51which guys stepped on that football field and were ready to play?
01:54Which guys were able to just go out there and play the game?
01:57Which guys had to think about it?
01:59And if you start thinking about it against another team, because they are trying to make their football team.
02:04They want their coaches to understand.
02:07There is that thing.
02:08When you're going against your own player, you don't want to hurt them.
02:12You don't want to do certain things to them.
02:14Even if you beat them, you don't want to embarrass them because that could be your friend.
02:18If your pass rush or your block can get that guy cut, so you pull back.
02:24When they go against the Patriots, they're not going to do that.
02:27And Joe's absolutely right.
02:28In these games, a lot of emotions flare.
02:31Hell, I'll be honest with you.
02:32I was in a lot of fights.
02:33Every time I thought somebody cheap shot one of my players, I wanted to get the player back.
02:37And if they kept doing it, then I felt that they must want to go there.
02:42And I think the coaches kind of knew I reacted that way.
02:47I didn't just go out there and get into fights.
02:49But if you're doing something stupid and you're jeopardizing our season by trying to hurt one of my players, I'm going to fight you.
02:56I didn't care.
02:57And now the NFL has come down on people because of the fights.
03:02They're finding people and things of that nature.
03:04And I think Dan Quinn does run a good deal.
03:07But I say one thing.
03:08Dan is definitely telling his players, hey, we're not going up here to fight.
03:12But we're going to protect each other.
03:14And we're not going to take anybody's ish.
03:16Okay?
03:17If they go out there and they bring something to us, we've got to bring it back to them.
03:20Because not only are you trying to get better as a football team, you want to see how your team is coming together.
03:26Who's going to fight for their brother?
03:28Who's going to be there for their next man?
03:30And if you have to do something, everybody do it together.
03:35I don't want to see players in practice like that for sure.
03:38You know, and listen, I'm not saying go out there and do something stupid.
03:42You know, you pull off your helmet and start swinging your helmet, you're going to get in trouble.
03:45You're going to get in trouble from the league and everybody else.
03:47And you could truly harm somebody.
03:49Don't want to see that.
03:50But as we get closer to this thing, we upgraded offensive line, defensive line.
03:57The two positions that I think are going to make this team go or not go.
04:03And now we get a chance to see guys on that football team that we know are good with New England.
04:10And watch our guys go against them to see how it's going to happen.
04:14See if we have improved.
04:16When I'm watching out on the field, I think the defensive line has improved.
04:20But are they improved because nobody can now cut them?
04:26And my simple explanation is when you are a D lineman, you are a pass rusher, you are a linebacker, you're rushing an offensive player in practice for sure with your own team, you know they cannot go below your waist.
04:42They are not going to do it.
04:44So you have a distinct advantage.
04:46But when you get into those games, even against New England, they may tell them don't do it.
04:52But hell, if they think you've got an advantage, they're going to do the thing that they know can nullify the stuff that you're doing.
04:57And once the game comes on Friday night, they damn well will cut you.
05:03And I think a defensive lineman, once they understand that, they don't come with the same reckless abandon that they do.
05:10They slow it down a little bit.
05:11They play it a little bit more cautious than what they do in practice sometimes.
05:15So I can't wait to see if our D linemen have made that major step.
05:21Are they a lot better than they were last year?
05:23Because Joe stated it.
05:25It's not about just the D line or the linebackers or the defensive back.
05:30It's all of them working together.
05:33Last year, there were times when the D line held stout.
05:37Running back gets through, the linebacker wasn't there to make the tackle.
05:40All the times, I saw Saquon Barkley run right out the field and had Jeremy Chin coming, should have had him, boom, dead to his rights.
05:48He did not touch him.
05:50Didn't make the tackle.
05:51So everybody has to work together.
05:53The pass rush, everybody thinking, oh, it's just about the outside.
05:56No.
05:57How about the rush up the middle?
06:00How about the defensive back holding it?
06:03Cover your guy just a little bit longer to allow the guy to get home.
06:06So it's a lot of things that I'm looking for.
06:08And then we flip it, I'm looking for the offensive line.
06:10We did bring Laramie Tunsil in.
06:12Dude, he looks great, too.
06:13I want to see him against somebody else now.
06:16I want to see Laramie.
06:17That's a big fellow.
06:18He's a big dude.
06:19I want to see this stuff.
06:21So I was asked earlier, what are you looking for?
06:25I'm looking for the O-line, D-line.
06:27Because if I see them get some moves, some push, and I think they've gotten better, I believe this football team can get better also.
06:36Because they lead the way.
06:38For sure.
06:39I don't think we're going to see Tunsil.
06:41We're going to see him in their practices.
06:43Yeah.
06:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:44That's what I'm talking about.
06:44I'm talking about Wednesday practice more than I am the game.
06:47I think you may get more.
06:48We will get, you and I will see more in Wednesday game that's going to be helping this team throughout the year.
06:56I mean, Wednesday's practice that we're going to see on Friday.
06:58Totally.
06:58Because on Friday, we're going to see younger guys getting that opportunity to go out there and prove they can play.
07:03On Wednesday, we're going to see the nucleus, the base, base, the foundation of this team perform.
07:10Oh, yeah.
07:10Those guys don't get that same opportunity on Friday.
07:13So Wednesday is going to be a little bit more, going to show me more about what this team is than Friday will.
07:21Totally.
07:21Have I told you what I think our setup is for Wednesday?
07:23What's that?
07:23Not totally confirmed, but the Patriots have, I think there's two Boston sports talk stations.
07:32And I think those guys get to set up, like, because it's in the stadium.
07:37You know what I mean?
07:38Like, they got space.
07:39They're doing it in the stadium?
07:40I believe so, yeah.
07:42They have a practice field, too, but I think it's in the stadium.
07:45And I think we get to get set up kind of on, like, a club-level platform watching everything.
07:51So we'll be able to see everything.
07:54Yeah.
07:54You know, when you're watching from the field level here, you get a really good view, but you don't get kind of that all-22 look.
08:01Yeah.
08:02So I don't know for sure yet, but I think that could be pretty darn cool.
08:05Yeah, yeah.
08:07You know, one thing I'm also curious about, and it's somebody you know, what do you think it'll mean for Izzo to be back up in New England for practices and stuff?
08:18Not much this preseason.
08:20Yeah.
08:20You know, and he's probably been there before or since he left there.
08:24He probably has.
08:24Yeah, so it's not going to be that big of a thing for him.
08:27But I'm ready.
08:30I can't wait for it.
08:31Dude, me too.
