00:00All right, so I said during the break, I'm like,
00:02so Vaughn Miller has some regrets, huh?
00:04And you responded very quickly with?
00:07The Commanders probably have some regrets for signing him.
00:09You're like, oh, you too is your answer.
00:12You're sorry you signed with us.
00:14I don't believe in that revisionist history stuff, man.
00:16Listen, they won the Super Bowl.
00:20I understand everybody was, oh, man, I made a mistake.
00:25No, you saw a quarterback that you liked.
00:29You felt you can go and join this team and try to go along for the ride.
00:34The team didn't play as well as they wanted to,
00:36and you didn't play as well as the team wanted you to.
00:39So say what you wish.
00:40Who cares?
00:41Let's keep moving.
00:42Now, I wish, I sure regret that I wasn't born at this time.
00:48Oh, yeah.
00:49You see what I'm saying?
00:50In college.
00:50Come on, man.
00:51You'd be hitting that NIL money.
00:53Yes, indeed.
00:53Like a paper route.
00:54Here's the audio.
00:55It was from 89 Podcasts with Steve Smith and Jesse Palmer where Von Miller talked about
01:01his decision to sign with the Commanders and essentially miss out if he had stayed in
01:06Seattle with the Niners to win or with the Seahawks to win a Super Bowl.
01:10You know, the guys were finishing up OTAs.
01:13You know, I started to get calls.
01:14It wasn't a lot.
01:15I only got two offers last year.
01:16I had, you know, one contract offer from the Washington Commanders.
01:22That's where I went and played.
01:24And, you know, I had one offer from the Seattle Seahawks.
01:26And, you know, obviously I picked, you know, I picked the wrong team on that one.
01:30It would have been three teams, three teams with three different teams with three Super
01:33Bowls.
01:34But, you know, that's just how it's supposed to be.
01:36For me, I just felt like, you know, I knew the Seattle Seahawks had a really good defense.
01:43You know, Coach Frazier was over there, and I went in and took a visit there.
01:47I understood how good the Seattle Seahawks were.
01:50For me, with the Washington Commanders, I just felt like Jaden Daniels was poised for
01:56another great season.
01:58You know, his rookie season went all the way to the NFC Championship.
02:01And, you know, last year, you know, we got hit with injuries, not just the quarterback
02:05position, but all over the place.
02:07And those are some of the things that you just can't calculate on teams.
02:11All right, so there he was.
02:13Well, now you listen to it.
02:14He's basically saying what we're saying.
02:15He was just speaking.
02:17He didn't say, well, I regret it.
02:19He said, it was kind of like, well, I made a mistake on that one.
02:22You know what I mean?
02:23There's assumed regret.
02:25Yeah.
02:25But he didn't actually say regret.
02:29I guess, what do you want him to answer if they ask him so?
02:33You had a choice.
02:34How do you feel?
02:36So, I mean, he's being truthful about it, but does it make you as a fan feel some type
02:41of way to hear him say that?
02:43Like, we all know how bad the season was.
02:46We feel like he feels.
02:47Right.
02:48Join the club.
02:49Yeah.
02:50Sucked last year.
02:51But you were part of it.
02:53I hate to say it, but you were out there.
02:54Part of it.
02:55Yeah.
02:55Not that you were the main problem, per se, but you were part of the endeavor.
02:58That was not good enough.
03:00Yep.
03:00Not good enough at all.
03:02So, do you think there'll be anybody this year that says that?
03:07I'm sure there's going to be people all over the league that say stuff like that.
03:10Okay.
03:11But that's those people who live in the past.
03:15In the past.
03:15Yeah.
03:16You can't live in the past.
03:16Let's get back to the present so your future can be bright, homie.
03:19So, what do you think is the big storyline opening camp in a couple of weeks?
03:24What will be the big storyline opening camp?
03:27The new coordinators?
03:28The coordinators is going to be the major one.
03:30The defensive overhaul.
03:33Sonny Stiles.
03:35The Ohio State linebacker.
03:37You know, Terry being moved around instead of sitting in one spot all day.
03:42Okay.
03:42Who is going to be the Robin to Terry's Batman?
03:48That's a major one.
03:49Like, can that guy emerge?
03:51There'll probably be some lingering talk.
03:54There's going to be some.
03:55But, like, for me, everyone goes immediately to the receiver.
03:59Oh, yeah.
04:00It's the shiny object.
04:01It's the fun toy.
04:02I keep looking at this league, man, and the tight ends are special.
04:05And if Chiega Conquo could do the things that they suspect, he's shown speed and running
04:11the ball after a catch, he could be number two for you.
04:14Really?
04:15Okay.
04:15But don't you still need a difference-making number two wideout to give you depth, flexibility,
04:21and a varied attack?
04:23That's an assumption.
04:25But, like, last year, the team that won the Super Bowl had an 1,800-yard receiver, and
04:30then the next guy had 600.
04:32Hmm.
04:34They won the Super Bowl.
04:35You know why?
04:36Because they had a balanced attack.
04:38They would run the ball.
04:39They were able to catch the ball.
04:40But they had a receiver that could just blow it open for you, too.
04:43And there's also a known sort of pecking order of everyone's role.
04:47Yeah.
04:47So, when you're slotted in the right spot and you get what you get, then as long as you
04:52play that role, it can be very effective.
04:54Yeah.
04:54You don't have to put up big numbers as the number two.
04:57In fact, you don't even want it, necessarily.
04:59Mm-hmm.
04:59And they've already talked about how we just want to increase looks to 17.
05:03And I'm all about that.
05:05I'm like, let's increase the targets to him and see where it goes.
05:09I didn't get to ask you about this on Monday when it crossed, but Rasul Douglas is planning
05:16to sign a one-year deal with the Commanders worth up to $3.8 million.
05:19He's only 30, or, ugh, he's a corner who's 30.
05:24Depends on how you look at it.
05:27He had signed with the Dolphins after the 53-man roster cuts.
05:30Played 15 games last season.
05:33Former Buffalo Bill.
05:35Former Green Bay Packer.
05:36I thought when the Packers got out of that business, that was a mistake by them.
05:41And, you know, he's a credible veteran.
05:43Like, you can't get mad at a credible veteran helping to possibly add stability to your secondary,
05:50which was very porous last year.
05:53I think he'll help.
05:55I think he comes in with experience, and he has talent.
05:58And one thing, I was sitting there, I did a little show yesterday with Fred and Santana.
06:03Okay.
06:04And Fred does this little thing called Smoot DB School or something, like secondary school.
06:11Okay.
06:12And watching them have a discussion and just positioning how you line up and stuff.
06:21Some veteran dudes know what you're running before you even come off the line of scrimmage.
06:28By how you're standing.
06:28How you're standing.
06:29How you're lined up.
06:30Where you're looking.
06:31And Santana, who's a guy who understood that, would still line up in a spot to give you one thing.
06:38And do something else.
06:39He was fast enough to get back to where he needs to be and run a totally different set of
06:44routes
06:44that you thought he would never run from that position.
06:47So just a guy like Rasul, he has that ability too.
06:52And maybe, just maybe the young guys asking him and watching him do stuff, they can pick up and learn.
06:58That's how I learned watching Ernest Binder.
07:00Seriously.
07:01Yeah.
07:01It's the details, the little tiny things that make the difference.
07:06And those who are really, really good pick up on them.
07:09And those who are also good at disguising them are the ones that end up making the plays.
07:13Because you don't know what they're actually doing.
07:16Here's a great example of how low the low tide is right now.
07:21This is the quiet.
07:23Can you hear it?
07:24The quiet before the NFL storm.
07:27I'm on ESPN.com's NFL page.
07:31Here's the headlines.
07:32The headlines.
07:33Ready?
07:34Cowboys player Neyland diagnosed with CT.
07:36Very sad story.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Stage one or stage two CT.
07:41They founded him.
07:41He committed suicide this past year.
07:43Terrible story.
07:45Okay.
07:46Then there's the Terry Narnold clears waivers, now a free agent.
07:49Okay.
07:50Got the Douglas to sign with the commanders.
07:51That's old news.
07:53So it's already still up on their page.
07:55Day and a half old.
07:57Bears quarterback Williams gifts Pope autographed jersey.
08:03Whoopity-doo-dah-day.
08:05How is that a headline on ESPN.com's NFL page?
08:12Answer.
08:13Man, it smells like low tide right now.
08:15I can smell the rotting fish on the beach.
08:17Next headline.
08:19Chiefs Kelsey Swift marry in ceremony at MSG.
08:22Yeah, I know.
08:22That was five days ago.
08:25There's this horrible story about Calais Campbell's mom.
08:28Yeah, that was horrible, man.
08:29Brother, I didn't want to get into it.
08:31There's another horrible story.
08:33Former Titan scout found guilty of murder.
08:35Ugh.
08:36There's the Chris Johnson thing with the ALS.
08:39Chris Johnson aims to revive the ice bucket challenge.
08:42I'm like, I don't know.
08:44That was a thing.
08:45That was a big thing, the ice bucket challenge.
08:47I don't know if you can revive that.
08:49I'm not sure if America is going to mount that horse again.
08:52You know, it seemed like a one-time kind of a deal.
08:55It could be something else.
08:57Jump from it.
08:58Instead of just doing that, do something else.
08:59Figure out another way.
