00:00All right, Ben Standing's with us as he is every Monday and Friday.

00:15You wrote in your column this morning in the opening line,
00:20the first pre-season game offered some answers.
00:23The days since have created a few more questions.
00:27Let's start with the answers.
00:28What answers from Friday night's game against Miami?
00:35Oh, I mean, it's like small little answers more than like, you know, big ones,
00:40especially since most of the guys weren't playing.
00:42I mean, we did get a couple things like it had looked like Jeremy Reeves
00:46was in line to be first team safety, and then he doesn't have to play in the game.
00:51They breast him with the other main guys,
00:54whereas Quan Martin and Will Harris played more snaps than any safeties who played in the game.
01:00So, you know, a little there in terms of like the current depth chart look.
01:06Yeah, Cross and Reeves are the starters, right?
01:09I mean, that's certainly the way it looks.
01:11It had looked that way for a week or so in camp, but, you know, you never know.
01:16And, you know, this was a sign in that regard.
01:22I would even say maybe, you know, it's been – we've talked a lot about Luvu being the green dot
01:28guy,
01:28it looked like, and then you have Stiles and Chennault both playing in this game.
01:33Not saying that that's – you know, they're obviously going to play,
01:35but, you know, that whole dynamic is like who's going to play more,
01:38or are they going to just split, you know, looking more and more like that may be the case.
01:46And then, you know, you just have to make individual performances.
01:49You know, Katron Allen, like, you can look at it half glass, full, half glass, empty,
01:54depending on where you want to emphasize it.
01:55But there was a stat I saw, I mean, Warren Sharp had it,
01:58that of his 23 carries, zero of them went for negative yards.
02:02And that says something about the style of the player.
02:06And it was something that was recognized by coming into the draft that, you know,
02:10he's a fall forward kind of a guy who makes something, you know, even when nothing's there.
02:14And, you know, I think that's – for a guy that, like, what's his role?
02:17Is it going to be the short yardage kind of guy maybe with Bill and Rashad White?
02:22Well, you know, again, maybe we can nitpick on some things here and there,
02:26but that type of player showed up against the Dolphins.
02:30And so, you know, I think some subtle things like that kind of stood out.
02:34All right.
02:35What you wrote, what questions have the days since created?
02:43Well, I mean, the Marietta one is, you know, the most obvious one.
02:47You know, the medical people out there, by that I mean, you know,
02:54people who don't have degrees, medical degrees.
02:56Because we're telling me that –
02:57The internet.
02:59Yeah, and some other people.
03:00Like, the sprained MCL is not the worst thing in the world, obviously.
03:03I mean, certainly it's better than, you know, what could have been the alternatives.
03:06And that, you know, he could be back – you know, we already –
03:09Quinn already said he's going to be out for preseason.
03:12We didn't technically ask if he's going to practice.
03:14But that's a – we can get to that.
03:15But, like, if he – you know, I mean, if he's out at all, like, if we get to week
03:22one
03:22and it's still iffy, you know, I mean, what do they do?
03:25They don't have a guy right now who you would feel remotely comfortable.
03:28I'm getting a lot of people – because I wrote about the Marietta thing.
03:31I'm getting people going, oh, come on, you're making a big deal about this.
03:34Nobody has a QB3, blah, blah, blah.
03:36You know, there's a massive difference in QB3.
03:39You can have a guy like, say, Josh Johnson or a Driscoll, and nobody would say,
03:45well, if that's your quarterback for 17 weeks, you're good.
03:47But if we're just talking a game or two, right, can that person be functional?
03:52Can that person allow the other playmakers to do what they do,
03:56allow the offensive coordinator to call a game plan in which at least the basics
04:00can be executed and you're not asking him to do too much?
04:03The problem with having a seventh-round rookie in Sam Hartman is there's no sense
04:08that they could even do that.
04:09And that's the difference between having a third-stringer who's at least functional
04:15versus no idea.
04:17I mean, you know, and I think that's where it's a little bit nervous right now.
04:20Again, especially when this – even if it's not for that reason,
04:23the starting quarterback has missed a lot of games.
04:26So, you know, the backup quarterback, you know, Josh Johnson was the number two
04:32at point for a lot of last year.
04:34Let's not forget, at the end of the year, they brought in Jeff Driscoll to be his backup
04:37because they didn't trust Sam Hartman to do that.
04:40So, you know, it just feels like you're putting yourself at a bit of a risk here
04:44all along, and now they're saying they're not even going to bring in another quarterback.
04:48Again, I don't think it's the end of the world, but to dismiss the third-stringer
04:52as irrelevant because the season's over.
04:55The season's over if that guy has to play the season.
04:57It's not over if he has to play one or two games.
04:59And they need somebody to punch him for that.
05:01Right.
05:02Like, my immediate reaction when you started talking, I'm like, look,
05:05if the backup quarterback's got to play like he did last year, we're doomed.
05:08The season's over.
05:10Let's move on to 27.
05:12That would really suck, by the way.
05:14But to your point, Marcus Mariota is very capable of coming in for a two-week period
05:21and keeping the trains on time, keeping them running and giving you a chance
05:26in the same way that, you know, Joe Flacco gave Cincinnati a chance.
05:30Of course, he had to do it for a much longer period of time
05:33and with a terrible defense last year as Burrow was getting healthy,
05:37but they were actually in it with him.
05:39That's what you have to have.
05:41Marcus Mariota's not starting 17 games, and you're going to end up, you know,
05:45vying for a playoff spot.
05:46But if he only has to start one in October and one in early December
05:53in a big spot, you have to have somebody like him versus a Sam Hartman.
05:57There's a big difference, major difference.
06:00Yeah.
06:00I mean, again, go back to 2020 when, you know, they went through, you know,
06:06Alex Smith was there, got hurt, and Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen,
06:10and they get to the end, and Alex Smith can't go,
06:13and they're looking at Steven Montez who had been there all year,
06:16and Ron Rivera said, his eyes got too big.
06:19They're like, all right, so what do we do now?
06:20And they went and, you know, they brought in Heineke,
06:22and, you know, say whatever you want about Heineke, he was a gamer.
06:25You know, he could do it.
06:26So that's all I'm saying.
06:28It's not, you know, you got to play this stuff all the way out.
06:32I mean, and, you know, again, it just, again,
06:34there's no difference to me than last year with the wide receiver room.
06:37I was like, really?
06:38This is the plan when you have this huge risk at receiver
06:41in terms of the injuries and the holdout,
06:43and they went in with the depth.
06:46It was obviously not satisfactory,
06:48and then obviously it played out the way that it did.
06:50So, again, the QB3 is not going, you're not going to,
06:53the season's not going to hinge on that,
06:54but if you don't have a guy that can at least be functional,
06:57then you probably have no chance.
06:59That was such a great pull, Steven Montez,
07:03because he literally, didn't he get into a game,
07:06and he was clearly petrified?
07:10Or Rivera thought that he could play,
07:13but he just, he was one of those guys
07:15when you actually had to do it in the game,
07:19didn't quite look the part.
07:22Did he play in a game?
07:23I don't think he, I don't think so,
07:26but it was a position that he was going to,
07:28you know, again, just based on the fact
07:30that he'd been there all year,
07:31which, by the way, brings up to just a different point
07:34since we're here.
07:35Like, this is no disrespect to Sam Hartman.
07:38The guy, seems like a really nice guy.
07:40He, you know, clearly has a good feel for football.
07:43You know, we could see that even when he's playing,
07:45but like, you know, I mean,
07:47it just doesn't seem like they think
07:49he's a legit quarterback,
07:50and the eye test kind of backs it up.
07:53Well, what does Regina think?
07:56Wow.
07:57I don't know what to tell you on that one,
07:59but, I mean, this is sort of like,
08:01I was just surprised when they brought him.
08:03Kidding, people, I'm kidding.
08:04Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
08:06I'm just surprised when they brought him back.
08:08I'm like, okay, like, A, they drafted a kid
08:10in the seventh round, and it's like,
08:11well, what is, again, like, what is the point?
08:13If it's just a camp body, even still, like, you know,
08:17I don't know.
08:17I'm just, it's like, the odd choice to me
08:20of keeping him, unless it's for other reasons,
08:23then it's just like, well, what was the point?
08:26Now you're in this position where Sam Quinn's saying
08:28they're probably not going to bring anybody else in,
08:29so does that mean for the rest of camp and preseason,
08:33the people you have to evaluate at receiver
08:35or anywhere else are now going to be having to do that
08:38with a seventh round rookie and a guy in his third year
08:41who you have already kind of said
08:43you don't think should be playing?
08:45That doesn't seem like a great spot to be in,
08:47but it is what it is.
08:48Do you think there's a chance that Jaden
08:51and the offensive starters and some of the defensive starters
08:55will play Saturday against Detroit?
08:56We know that it won't likely happen against Baltimore,
08:59but could it happen Saturday against the Lions or not?
09:04I mean, like, you know, all things being equal,
09:06I would say, yeah, you know, you should play some of these guys,
09:09but now that Mariota's hurt, and again,
09:11you can tell me that he'll be back in two weeks
09:13and it won't be a big deal, that's cool,
09:14but as of now, he's hurt, and I don't think I'd play him.
09:19I think the risk is now exponentially greater
09:22knowing that Mariota's out.
09:23Again, maybe he'll be ready for week one.
09:25I'm not a doctor. I don't know.
09:26I don't think you can operate like that.
09:28I don't think you can.
09:29I think if your backup quarterback is out
09:31for the rest of the preseason, that can't...
09:34If you're starting quarterback, if you think he needs work
09:38or that the offense needs work with the new offensive coordinator,
09:41I don't think you can operate on that level of fear.
09:45Again, if you had a third stringer
09:47that you could remotely play, I might agree,
09:49but at the moment, it's just the extreme is so nuts
09:53that I don't know that you could...
09:54I mean, again, even if it was Josh Johnson,
09:56who none of us are saying is a guy you'd be comfortable with going,
10:00but at least you could play Josh Johnson for a game or two.
10:03That's all I'm saying.
10:04I don't know how you would do this otherwise,
10:05but sure.
10:06I mean, to the larger point, everybody needs work.
10:09It isn't just the quarterback.
10:10You need to get Stephon Diggs on time.
10:11You need to get the offensive line.
10:13If Alec Grady's actually going to be back,
10:15you've got to get rhythm with him and the quarterback,
10:18and so on and so on.
10:20So there's more to it than just the quarterback.
10:23I just...
10:24Look, again, if they're not bringing anybody else in,
10:26then they clearly don't have the same worries that I would,
10:30but that's me from the outside.
10:33We'll see.
10:35Steven Montez is available, if you're curious.
10:39He hasn't played football since 2024.
10:42He played with the Edmonton Elks.
10:45That's not the CFL team.
10:47I'm pretty sure the Edmonton team and the CFL are the Eskimos, I think.
10:53But he didn't get many opportunities after playing here.
10:56All right.
10:58Of the players that really helped themselves on Friday night
11:02with respect to making the roster
11:05or being seriously considered for the practice squad,
11:08who was on that list for you?
11:12Well, I mean, I think the two running backs,
11:14like I said before with Cater and Allen,
11:16like at least you saw the rationale behind
11:19what he could potentially do for them.
11:21So, you know, I think he's probably already in a decent position
11:24to make the team, especially now with McNichols banged up.
11:27But I think that just at least helps solidify that.
11:29And then if you're talking practice squad,
11:31you know, Robert Henry shows that he can be
11:36a guy that can make plays in space.
11:39And, you know, again, we go through this every single year.
11:42There's a guy or two as a skill player who you see in preseason,
11:46you're like, oh, my Lord, this guy's going straight to Canton.
11:50And then, you know, it doesn't always play out that way.
11:52But, you know, you need guys who can, you know,
11:55potentially help and make plays in certain ways.
11:57And, you know, like in the example of, say,
11:59I'm not saying they're the exact same type of guy,
12:01but in the knock on wood example that Bill were to miss any time,
12:04you know, maybe this guy Henry could be a guy that could come in
12:07and give you some of that, you know, elusiveness and wiggle
12:10and whatever that maybe you wouldn't get from some other.
12:13So, yeah, I mean, as a pure practice squad guy,
12:16he looked fun for sure.
12:22I mean, I think, you know, the linebacker situation is interesting.
12:27Allie Cahill and Kane Medrano are not the same type of guy
12:30in terms of the positions that they play.
12:33But it was Cahill.
12:33Medrano nearly had a pick six.
12:35I mean, it was right in his hands.
12:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
12:39But, I mean, like, you know, Cahill made this team last year
12:41kind of out of nowhere.
12:43And, you know, they were using him in that green dot kind of role.
12:48Medrano is more of the speed special teams kind of a guy.
12:52So, you know, I think that's an interesting dynamic.
12:54I mean, do either of them make the team?
12:56Or if so, which one?
12:57You know, that could signal, you know,
13:00depending on what they think they need more of.
13:02You know, that could be interesting.
13:06And I think also, like, I think Tyler Owens was interesting to me.
13:10Again, it's hard to get completely worked up over snaps in preseason
13:15because you don't always know what the priorities were.
13:17But the fact that, you know, he was a guy, like, on the very first play, right?
13:21On the very first play, he didn't, like, essentially play outside corner to a degree
13:26and, like, or at least he moved outside and defended the receiver out there.
13:30He played fewer snaps than Harris and Martin.
13:33And I say that in a positive way for Owens,
13:35as if they were like, well, maybe we don't need to see him as much.
13:38He played more special team snaps than anybody on the team last year.
13:41We already know that Ballour's out.
13:43Jeremy Reeves is probably going to play less, right?
13:46He can't play more if he's going to be a lot of safety.
13:49And so Tyler Owens, you know, I generally thought he would make the team,
13:55in part because he's just got these incredible athletic and physical dimensions
13:59that they'd want to keep playing with.
14:01But, you know, when you see how they're using him
14:03and potentially even prioritizing him over Harris and Martin,
14:07then that's, you know, that's interesting just in terms of both making the team
14:11and also maybe how they see him possibly fitting in the rotation.
14:16Yeah, back to the running backs.
14:17I mean, I actually, I mean, I think it's really hard.
14:20I mean, because we can go down the list.
14:22The Marcus Masons and, you know, just the running backs.
14:24Mack Brown, Lake Seastrunk, like just thinking about running backs that weren't.
14:32But he, the thing that stood out to me is just in sort of a zone run scheme,
14:37he's totally built for it.
14:39He's got really good patience, really good, excellent vision, good burst.
14:44He actually looks more natural as a zone runner than Katron Allen does.
14:49But, you know, they're learning a lot about these guys in practices,
14:54joint practices as much as they are in the games.
14:56But I would think that that's a guy that certainly helped himself.
15:00I just don't know where the room would be unless you decided
15:03that Katron Allen is a six-round pick.
15:05You liked Henry's upside more.
15:08Yeah, I mean, even, you know, Quintin McNichols could be out a few weeks.
15:12We'll see what that means in terms of the season.
15:14But let's just say he was out even longer.
15:16Like, if you wanted a fourth back, would you go with,
15:19Henry, would you go with Jerome Ford, who's a guy that's played in the league
15:22a little bit, can do more things, ready to go?
15:26You know, that would be an interesting dynamic.
15:28But, yeah, we're a ways off.
15:29And I would also say, you know, the conversation we always have
15:32about running back is not that they're a dime a dozen,
15:35but that you can always typically find somebody there.
15:37Now, I think it's smart for teams around the league to prioritize
15:40paying some of the better guys, you know, your Barkley and your Gibbs,
15:43if that makes sense.
15:44But it's still the same general idea, and this is an example of that.
15:47He looks like a guy that could play, that if you had to throw him in,
15:50could probably give you at least something, which is not the case
15:53at other positions.
15:54But at the same time, don't overvalue it, because there's a lot.
15:58We just say you can find running backs kind of here, there, and everywhere.
16:01And that's why, like, most camps probably have a guy like him who you're like,
16:05ooh, this is interesting.
16:06But that's the point of the running back position.
16:08There's just a lot of guys who can do this.
16:11By the way, I thought Antonio Hamilton Sr., and I went back and looked at my
16:15kind of recap for the Giants game at the end of the year.
16:18He played very well in that game.
16:21He's, with some of their special teams losses, like a guy like Nick Belor,
16:26who was arguably their best coverage guy on teams,
16:32I have a feeling they brought him back, and now there's – because of special
16:38teams alone, he's going to make this football team.
16:43Well, you know, that's the thing.
16:44Special teams has obviously took the key element.
16:46When you look at these last few spots, he did have, you know, some good highlights,
16:52I thought, as a special teams guy in the game.
16:54And, you know, like you said, late last season, he was standing at a bit.
16:57A little bit of corner, but, you know, special teams as well.
16:59And that would be his entree into making the team.
17:02Now the fact that Trey Amos is still out and we don't quite know his deal,
17:07now keeping a fifth quarterback seems more logical in general.
17:12So, yeah, it would just come down to how do you do that?
17:15You know, where else are you taking – removing away a player from another spot?
17:18But certainly Hamilton looks like that guy.
17:21And this is also the dynamic of he's, you know, over 30.
17:26You know, he was a guy they picked up in camp last year.
17:30In the middle of camp.
17:31Like, you know, can you put him to the practice squad and get him there?
17:36And then, you know, elevate him the first week or two if you need to.
17:39You know, those types of things they're going to have to figure out, you know,
17:42in terms of who they can expose or not.
17:44But certainly Hamilton looks like a guy that could play.
17:46And also, like, you know, Fabian Moreau, you know,
17:49he's a guy that was with Durante Jones in Minnesota.
17:52Right.
17:53He's a completely solid vet.
17:55He was playing – I want to say he was playing ahead of Hamilton,
17:59at least in this game.
18:00And I feel like even in some practices that's been the case.
18:03But, you know, again, it might just depend if it's a choice,
18:06what they prioritize more, perhaps the cornerback part
18:09or the special teams part.
18:12Ben Standing joining us.
18:14Jake Moody hitting a 29-yarder off the right upright is not good for him.
18:19And that matters in this kicking thing.
18:23And Stevens already had sort of a lead.
18:26I don't know.
18:27Stevens actually – I don't know if you noticed, the play was whistled dead,
18:30but he actually missed an extra point before the play was whistled dead.
18:34He went through with the kick and pushed it to the right.
18:36Ended up making it on the retry.
18:41But is it Stevens and his job to lose at this point?
18:47I mean, I would think so.
18:48You know, even going back to the beginning of this,
18:50it felt like as long as they weren't feeling nervous about a rookie,
18:56that Ty would go to the guy with the bigger leg and therefore more potential.
19:00And the fact that Stevens has also been more accurate to boot in camp,
19:04you know, I think would suggest that it's his job to lose.
19:10But, you know, I mean, look, we'll see what happens.
19:12I'd be curious to see if, like, next game, they're like, okay, kid,
19:16you go do everything, right?
19:19And we'll see where we're at.
19:20And if he does it, then there's nothing else to see here.
19:23And if he doesn't, then, yeah, well, then maybe it's still game on.
19:26But, yeah, it looks to me like Stevens is the guy.
19:29And, you know, again, it's that big leg aspect of it.
19:33You know, I think we're all going to be, you know,
19:35you always want the offense to move down the field as much as possible.
19:38But I think some of us sickos are going to be like, eh, that's okay.
19:40Maybe you stall at the 50.
19:41Let's let him kick one from 60 plus.
19:44Yeah, well, there was an opportunity in the game the other night.
19:46Hold on.
19:47I wrote this down on my notes.
19:48Yeah, I think I saw somebody say he could have kicked like a 61-yarder.
19:52It was, I think it was a 60, I think it was a 61-yarder.
19:55Yeah, because the ball was at the 40, I think it was a 62-yarder.
19:59The ball was at the 45, I think I wrote down.
20:01When was that?
20:01When did they punt?
20:03I think it was like the first drive.
20:08I'll find it.
20:09Whatever.
20:10Yeah, I would like to see that.
20:13For sure, I'd like to see that.
20:15I think it was the first quarter.
20:16And I think in that case, Quinn wants to see the defense.
20:18Yeah, they were at the Miami 44.
20:21So, seven, that had been a 61-yarder.
20:2461-yard field goal.
20:26First drive of the game.
20:28Offensive drive of the game.
20:29Yeah, and they punted.
20:30Right.
20:30So, you know, I mean.
20:31With their backup punter.
20:33Right.
20:34I mean, I'm just guessing that Quinn was like, hey, we want to do this.
20:36He didn't want that to be his first kick.
20:38Well, not just that, but also like, you know, you want to have the defense also.
20:42You know, it's not just him.
20:43You want to have the defense do what they need to do.
20:46So, give them the longer field to play with.
20:48Obviously, that first drive wasn't great defensively anyway.
20:51So, you know, give them, you know, the opportunity to do what they do.
20:55So, obviously, it's always a fun thing to do right before the halftime or, in this case, in the second
21:01half when it's a preseason game.
21:02But, yeah.
21:03It won't surprise me if we see him launch one of those here in preseason if the situation works out.
21:11But, yeah, that one in the first quarter probably wasn't exactly right.
21:15All right.
21:16We'll end on this because we've talked a little bit about this today because we talked about it on Thursday
21:20and Friday.
21:22You titled the section in your substat column this morning, Meme-ified.
21:27The sports meme industrial complex worked overtime this weekend to capitalize on the drama involving Jaden Daniels and LSU.
21:37I really hope that the people around him understand what they did and don't do that again.
21:44Do you think that that's being reinforced somewhere?
21:50Oh, I have no idea.
21:51I mean, you know, like, to do this, you know, look, I think we discussed this the other day.
21:56There could be something interesting in terms of the NIL aspect of it.
21:59You know, why are the guys who are no longer playing still having their name and likeness being used when
22:06they're presumably not getting any money?
22:08Separate issue from how bad of a PR blunder this was.
22:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:11No, I think so.
22:12That part was real.
22:13But the fact that they then decided to make this more public by going to ESPN, by saying, according to
22:18ESPN, that a Daniels spokesman said this was about the number five jersey at LSU.
22:23Like, these are the types of things that just seem to be a complete own goal.
22:28So then when Jaden Daniels comes out later and says, you know, it says that hopefully it's a private matter.
22:33Well, I mean, when your people went to ESPN and more likely than not, I don't know this for sure,
22:41but I'm guessing they leaked the cease and desist.
22:43Thinking that the world would back God's gift to football, you know, Jaden Daniels, that that can be the only
22:54thing they thought they could achieve is that everybody would come out and back them.
22:58LSU, Washington fans, football fans, football media.
23:02I mean, anybody with a brain in their head with any experience could have said, don't do this.
23:09It's not going to go the way you thought.
23:11My question is, I think he'll recover from this football wise here.
23:16It's fine as long as he plays well, but we can't have this again with the people around him.
23:23They've got it.
23:24They've got to take a major step or seven backwards out of this.
23:31I would hope that they got the message.
23:35Well, that I mean, yeah, that's that's the question.
23:37The people that decided to do this in the first place, do they understand the lessons here now, as we've
23:43all know, having walked through life in various ways?
23:46Some people like, oh, OK, that just was a bad choice.
23:49And other people don't see it that way at all, whether they're ignorant or arrogant or whatever.
23:54And they just think, no, we're doing the right thing here.
23:57Don't worry about it.
23:58That's yeah, that'll be the question.
24:00I agree with you.
24:00I don't think it's going to affect him here at all.
24:04But, you know, I do think it's yeah, like you said, this was sort of the get out of jail
24:11free card on this kind of front.
24:13And again, it's like, OK, man, like now you guys are this is a real thing we're doing here.
24:17OK, so, yeah, I do think it's an it's an important deal.
24:21What did you make of Dan Quinn saying he probably hasn't been paying attention to it?
24:24I mean, I get that.
24:25You know what?
24:26I haven't played that sound.
24:27Max said he had it.
24:28Max, do you have that?
24:29Will you play it for me real quickly?
24:30I haven't heard it yet.
24:34Sorry, which sound I was doing?
24:35I was doing Quinn on Quinn on the Jaden Daniels situation.
24:38Yeah, let me pull it up one moment.
24:41Yeah.
24:42I mean, you know, for people of a certain age, he went full Sergeant Schultz on it.
24:48Yeah, I don't know.
24:49And, you know, look, he was getting ready for a game and this, that and the other.
24:52But it was such news.
24:54I don't know how you couldn't completely.
24:55He said he was aware that Daniels had issued a statement, thought that was a good move.
25:00This, that and the other.
25:01But then he immediately pivoted to just how well Jaden would play in camp.
25:04And, you know, let me let me hear it, Max, if you got it.
25:11Do you have it?
25:12Not yet.
25:13Not yet.
25:14All right.
25:14Don't worry about it.
25:16Ben just gave the summary of it.
25:18So, yeah, I mean, I don't know what he's going to say to that.
25:21I think that, you know, of course, this isn't going to affect this team in this moment.
25:29It's preparation for the season and his hopeful, you know, rebound season in 26.
25:35It's obviously affected very severely the relationship that he has with his alma mater.
25:41I think it's recoverable.
25:43Other people don't.
25:44I think he's a good enough kid and certainly can repair that, you know, at some point.
25:49I think the thing that you just have to understand, I would guess, is you don't want this to happen
25:57again.
25:58This is not, this is self-inflicted.
26:01This is unforced error at the highest of levels.
26:04Anybody that they could have consulted with that had any experience with this stuff could have said, no, don't do
26:12this.
26:13In addition to, you're not going to get the reaction you want.
26:16The timing of it is terrible.
26:19Um, because you don't want it to happen again and be a distraction when the games are actually going on,
26:25you know, or I mean, I can, I think a lot of people are already, you know, putting it out
26:30into, uh, next January and February when there will be likely contract negotiations.
26:36Um, let's hope it, it, it's, it, that was a lesson learned for his sake, uh, and for the team's
26:43sake, for everybody's sake, it's a lesson learned.
26:45There's no guarantee that it was though.
26:47No guarantee at all.
26:49Right.
26:49And I do think like, I don't, I know I'm not going to do my best to not have this
26:52turn into the Bryce Harper national.
26:55Is he going to get signed with the Yankees bit that just hangs over his head.
26:59But this is the point of, if you look ahead, okay, the people that helped him make this decision will
27:03be the, presumably the people who are going to help him make other decisions, including the contract.
27:08And that's the one thing we're all going to be like, okay, you know, assuming he's healthy and assuming he
27:13should pull it, you get it paid and all that.
27:15That's going to be the big question hanging over it.
27:17And, you know, situations like this or make you be a little bit more nervous than, you know, you'd like
27:24to think you would be when most of these things are somewhat cookie cutter to a degree, but you know,
27:28we'll see.
27:29Yeah.
27:30All right.
27:31I will talk to you, uh, later on this week.
27:34By the padded practices, the next two days is the parent plan.
27:37So keep that in mind.
27:40So padded practices as in Tuesday and Wednesday.
27:43Correct.
27:44So the starters aren't going to play on Saturday.
27:48Right.
27:49I mean, it's trending that way, but you know, I mean, I guess if you don't play Tuesday, Wednesday, you're
27:56off Thursday, Friday, you know, then that, that gives you some time.
27:59And, you know, again, do I think I take Deron Payne's out there?
28:02I mean, probably not.
28:03Do I think some of the younger guys to be out there?
28:06Sure.
28:06Jaden, that's the, that's the big question.
28:10I, you know, um, when does training camp officially end?
28:16Um, it's this week, right?
28:19It usually is right before that second preseason game.
28:23Uh, no, training camp still going on for a bit here.
28:29I think it doesn't typically go through the last game.
28:32I think it goes through the last game.
28:34I think in recent years, it's ended earlier and earlier, at least, at least calling it training camp.
28:41Yeah.
28:41I mean, there is a point where it transitions where one day we're out there and the next day we're
28:45not, but I think that's going to be a bit.
28:49Usually that's like sort of around the point when they, uh, trim to 53 and that's, you know, when it
28:55all kind of ends.
28:56But, you know, look, man, I don't remember what happened yesterday, but I'm getting old, Kevin.
28:59I love, I love, by the way that, and I just saw this, that Ben and his sub stack listed
29:04all of the potential quarterbacks that they could bring in.
29:07And one of them was Phillip rivers.
29:10Yeah.
29:10I don't, I, can you imagine?
29:12Yeah.
29:12I'll come in and play third string preseason football for you.
29:16Um, I would have mostly joke, but you know, yeah, I know, but also because guys like Driscoll would be
29:24a possibility.
29:25He, I mean, he was, you know, he was a teammate of blouse, right.
29:28And he was here before.
29:30I mean, again, to me, without knowing Mariota's exact situation, I'd be calling Driscoll right now.
29:35I'm being like, come on in because he's an adult in the room, so to speak.
29:39He's actually done some of these things.
29:41Like, let's just say Jayden doesn't play.
29:43Then what do you, it gets true.
29:45Well, then what are you doing?
29:46You're going just with the two guys who have no experience.
29:48I mean, presumably right.
29:50Detroit's going to play their better guys.
29:51Right.
29:51And typically if this is the game, so now you're going to put a thing, Kelly, man,
29:55this and Sam Hartman against the lions team that possibly has a bunch of guys.
29:59And you want to see your own guys again, maybe it's too late for that in terms of a Driscoll,
30:03but like, that's how I would be thinking.
30:06What's the, I'm going to tell you right now what Detroit's going to do.
30:11Detroit is, oh, that's week two of the regular season.
30:16My fault.
30:17Week two of the preseason.
30:18Where's the number here?
30:23It's not up.
30:24There's no number on the, oh, here it is.
30:26Detroit's minus two and a half.
30:28So there's a number.
30:29So they're, they're less than what Miami was on the road.
30:32All right.
30:32I got to run.
30:33Thanks.
30:35Ben standing, everybody.
30:36Kevin Sheehan showed the team nine 80 and the team nine 80.
