JP and BMitch react to Dan Quinn's comments at the NFL Annual League Meeting.
Transcript
00:00Coming to you live, Scottsdale, Arizona, the Biltmore Hotel, NFL annual meeting.
00:06Everybody's here. You got all the media, you got all the coaches, all the GMs, all the owners.
00:11I think we'll get to talk to Josh Harris today. Should be pretty cool.
00:14But this morning, Dan Quinn spoke at length. I mean, DQ probably talked for like a half hour.
00:22And it's a valuable skill for head coaches that is maybe annoying to fans and media.
00:26But DQ's really good at talking for a while without providing a whole lot of information.
00:32A couple things I did want to make sure we got to hear, though.
00:38I think it's a big deal that John Harbaugh is back in the NFC, or is in the NFC East.
00:43And the Giants, as messy as that operation has been, I think have really raised the floor by bringing John
00:49Harbaugh in.
00:50Number nine, Jeff, Dan Quinn talking about Harbaugh in the NFC East coaching the Giants.
00:58Yeah, so we're excited.
01:01You know, John's an excellent coach, man.
01:03And so to add a heavy hitter into this division, I think that's a big deal.
01:07So we love the division.
01:08They're there.
01:09And like the Washington-New York game has been going on for a long time, man.
01:13And so John seems like an ideal fit for them.
01:19I think he preferred it when it was Joe Judge or Ben McAdoo or whoever else was up there.
01:25Don't you be telling the truth?
01:26No, I think he did.
01:28Listen, brother, the best coaches want to go against the best.
01:30You know what I'm saying?
01:31And he knows John's going to have a stern test for him.
01:35So I hope he lifts his game and be ready to go against it.
01:38I don't know.
01:39Didn't Big John say he always wanted to schedule St. Leo's?
01:41Yeah, but you know what?
01:42When they put the big boys in his face, he still went against them and smacked them, too.
01:46Right.
01:46You know?
01:49I want to try to explain something or at least give some context.
01:53I think it was our friend Nicky Jabala asked Dan Quinn about if there was a possible,
01:59before they released Tyler Biotish, if they talked about trading him.
02:04Number six, Jeff, Dan Quinn asked about potentially trading Tyler Biotish.
02:09We did not explore a trade.
02:12I wasn't surprised that he had gotten signed, and I'm glad that he did.
02:17I know Mike, who's the new OC there, and so he was pumped to get him there.
02:22And we talked, like I know a little bit from Mike about scheme-wise, what they would do,
02:25and I certainly thought Tyler would be a fit there with them.
02:29But I wasn't surprised.
02:31He's tough.
02:32He's durable.
02:32He's smart.
02:33So I wasn't surprised, you know, in that space.
02:37So, correction, it was our friend Mitch Tishler that asked that question, not Nicky Jabala.
02:42Now, you think Mitch looked like Nicky?
02:44Nicky should slap the hell out of you.
02:47No.
02:48I got an email last night talking about some I should be honored, and I didn't respond.
02:56I'll pass that along.
02:57Okay, yeah.
02:59Specifically, though, on this Biotish thing, because I think a lot of fans are jumpy about that,
03:04because they saw him get released, and then he signed a real contract with the Chargers.
03:10And so fans know, because he was released, you don't get any sort of comp pick there.
03:15If he was a free agent, maybe you could have got a comp pick because it was real money.
03:21And Dan Quinn says, no, we didn't explore trading them.
03:24I think there's some differences in the roles here that people should be aware of.
03:29Like, in that two-week period, really starting probably at the combine, running up until the opening of the negotiation
03:39period,
03:39and then the beginning of the new league year.
03:41So you're talking last week of February to the middle of March, Adam Peters, probably Lance Newmark, Brandon Sosna,
03:49like the front office execs, are fielding and making phone calls kind of constantly.
03:56Like, there's a constant, fluid activity within the front office, and that's happening for all 32 teams.
04:05Like, that is, there are always conversations.
04:08So I think there's a difference between, like, DQ saying we didn't have trade talks on him versus AP working
04:17the phones on him.
04:19Yeah.
04:19Because they bring Quinn into the process as something kind of, as something actually materializes,
04:27as something becomes real and tangible.
04:29But prior to that step of the process, when there's just a zillion phone calls going on, Quinn's not involved
04:36in that.
04:37He's doing evaluations of players, and, I mean, hell, he's working on two new offensive and defensive systems getting installed.
04:44So I think, like, we live in such a soundbite world where Quinn says they didn't try to trade him.
04:52Oh, my gosh, what a terrible mistake.
04:55Maybe they should have traded him, and maybe they didn't extract enough value.
04:57Like, I can understand that mindset, but I wouldn't jump from DQ says it to nobody talked to any other
05:07teams about Biotis maybe being available.
05:09Yeah.
05:09I think those two things can be quite different.
05:13It's funny.
05:14I'm bringing it up and defending DQ as he walks by.
05:17And listen to me, though.
05:19If somebody were to – if they were to reach out and say, you know, we want to trade him,
05:24what would you give us for him?
05:25Say hi to B.
05:27What up, Coach?
05:27I don't know if he can see you.
05:29See you, man.
05:32Right.
05:32Like, that's the thing is the operations, the functionality of the coach versus the GM in the front office are
05:40just different, especially in that period of time.
05:43And, again, and I would say this if Quinn was here, like, if your mindset is you should have gotten
05:48something, whether you extract a sixth rounder or whatever it is, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with that.
05:55But I think to suggest that there were no calls because Quinn said it is not telling the entire story.
06:02Yeah.
06:03Yeah.
06:03I'm with that.
06:05And it's funny.
06:07I think fans disagree.
06:09And to your point, B, this time last year, Adam Peters could do no wrong.
06:14Then you have this past season, and now fans are very, very jumpy about everything going on.
06:19True.
06:20And that's the nature of the beast, right?
06:23One more, because you and I talked about this earlier, about, like, kind of the defensive play caller, right?
06:28Like, who's going to be – is there a guy that would have that role that Wagner had on the
06:34defense with the green dot and all the calls coming in?
06:37Number seven, please, Jeffrey.
06:41In this instance, we'll have a number of different packages, Ben.
06:43Ben, it will be – I've got to explain it the best way – who has probably the most on
06:49-field in all the packages would be the one that would do that.
06:54I've done it with safeties before.
06:55And so it's really – the green dot is the initial part of the communication hub.
07:01That doesn't mean they're making all the calls and the checks.
07:04So, in other words, Ben, you could have the – theoretically, at safety and give it to me as the
07:09linebacker,
07:10and I'm doing all the communication because I may not be in on every package.
07:13So, in practice, we get a number of people that can work through that communication.
07:19But it doesn't have to be one specific position.
07:23It usually falls into a good communicator and one that is involved in the most packages.
07:29So, for us, Lou Vu is somebody that, you know, I would also consider into that space.
07:35He'll still likely play our Will linebacker, which is one of our inside guys, which are similar.
07:40But he could be the one to go do that.
07:42That doesn't mean he would have the most at-the-line communication,
07:45but it does mean you do have to have a few people trained for that.
07:52Interesting, right?
07:53I'll go back one.
07:53I think two communication hubs are really needed.
07:57It's one in the front seven and one in the secondary.
08:00So, whether we have the green dot or not, who's in and out of checks, how do they get there?
08:05But one in the front seven, one in the back seven, and then one of those positions will have the
08:09green dot.
08:11Hell, by that math, they've got 14 players on the field.
08:16I think a lot of this is going to be fluid.
08:19I think defensively, especially in the secondary,
08:22it's more about reacting once the offense gets to the line of scrimmage,
08:27and then if there is motion.
08:28Like, offensively, you're really calling a play.
08:31Defensively, you're kind of calling a set and then reacting as the offense comes to the field.
08:36So, I think some of this is a little overblown.
08:39You know what I mean?
08:40Yeah, I think it's, like, for me, it's not as difficult as many may think.
08:47Like, the coach calls it into your head, you're relaying to your teammates.
08:54Hell, they need to know what to do.
08:56Right.
08:56That's all it really is.
08:58It was also, like, Wagner was such a natural fit for that.
09:01Bobby was able to tell them and also tell them what they have to do.
09:05Right.
