01:12choose like a million blonde haired blue eyed girls to walk down a runway but black women
01:17in a show are far and few between okay it's very competitive it's like that one token
01:21girl but come on what percentage of magazine covers do you see an asian on it's rougher
01:24being an asian than a black woman tyra has told me right up front the fashion industry
01:28is all about race really she goes on the covers of magazines and i'm not talking about lucy
01:32lu she's an actress so if you entering this fashion world you would be the underdog before
01:37i decided to enter into this industry i never really thought about my ethnicity she says
01:41there's less slots for you in any runway show editorial fashion magazine any single other
01:45race you can even think of right now i'm half japanese and i'm half caucasian but i've never
01:49done anything that made me associate myself as an asian i don't know how much april lives
01:55out her japanese culture in her life but her japanese parachute might be that one thing
01:59that's going to give her the edge what is that it's from iran mosques it's hand painted
02:08i am so proud of my persian culture but my iranian family my father who's muslim a model
02:15the whore i should do something i was diagnosed with lupus which is a chronic illness that attacks
02:23your immune system about a year ago and i don't want my roommates to know i hide everything i take
02:29pills under the counter and like hurry up and drink some water i don't want to be judged i just want to
02:34be as normal as everybody else

03:15so let's start with c'mr what's up are you going to tell me that i should be here i do actually i love
03:22your toughness and i feel like you're trying to do this feminine thing that's not natural for you
03:26i will be tough i just feel like that is what makes you special i still need to find my comfort
03:30zone with still being me but not looking like plain jane how are you handling the stress and
03:35pressure better a lot better the stress level is not intense i mean i do kind of miss my mom
03:40my mom and i are like this that's like my mom yeah my mom quit her job and came with me to paris
03:45when i was 18 and she's the reason why i'm standing in front of you right here today my mom is my rock
03:50okay this is the first time i'm at home in my life i have ever recalled a diva i see camille and
03:57i see the diva attitude there's a certain level of humility modesty that you have to have it's not
04:03about proving to the world how great that you can be with this thing on your chest like i'm good i'm
04:07good i'm good it's a quiet confidence i believe my calling in life is to be a source of inspiration
04:12and strength to other people because that's when i feel so good i love that you see yourself in that
04:17way especially as a woman of color you know i haven't been connected with my japanese heritage
04:22i'm not going to pretend i have so i'm not trying to market myself to just asian girls
04:27because i want to ask your opinion on what i should do with my dad because he's leaving messages
04:30on my cell phone right now and calling my mom does he know where you are no he doesn't
04:34would it help you in any way would it give you strength to talk to him to talk to him just like
04:39whether it's a curse out or a um it would be over if i talk to him right now it might be something
04:44that you have to deal with maybe in your photo shoots you are thinking about him and there's
04:47an anger but there's maybe a sadness because that's what i see in your eyes when you do photo
04:50shoots it's a sadness really i was talking to cmar like seriously i think i've grown more in like
04:56the past couple weeks and i've grown like in the past couple years and if i go back home to like
05:00my life i don't want you to go back to your life before going there's always walgreens yeah i was
05:04like no more walgreens for shandy look at that as your past and look at this whole experience as being
05:09your future okay well one thing i wanted to talk about with you is on the last photo shoot i felt
05:14like you had like an attitude with people really you know so that's that's true that day i wasn't
05:20feeling well you thought i was giving you attitude not me just in general having lupus i don't feel
05:24well and i'm trying to hide it i'm trying to be strong if you get eliminated it's not going to be
05:28because you're tired at work but if i think that you have an attitude and that you don't work well
05:32with others i'm going to be like i don't know about that you know so just be honest and speak up
05:36okay i feel myself just draining down because i'm thinking negative i think i'm going to die
05:42i think my liver is going to go out i'm having short-term memory my hair is falling out i feel
05:47vulnerable i feel weak i'm hiding all these things i'm just tired of it so we wake up and we go to
05:54like lower east side to meet this gentleman by the name of sam christensen and learn about our
05:59personality we're working to get these girls familiar with what it is about themselves that other
06:05people identify with so they can talk about themselves comfortably when they're in interview
06:09situations what i'm going to introduce to you is the magic of charisma how you can draw to you the
06:16kind of attention that makes you stand out that makes people listen that makes people notice and
06:19that's pretty essential to a model you know modeling is a package deal you got to learn how to
06:24walk a runway and portray yourself in a certain light um what we're going to do is gather some
06:30information about how everybody else perceives us we are handed sheets of paper and we have to
06:35mark off adjectives that describe each one of the girls and he's going to hand them back to the girls
06:40and they get to see what we said about them so i get to see what people think of me really in the
06:45house adventurous uh headstrong stylish sophisticated quirky fragile secretive emotional responsible
06:53intelligent sophisticated kind exotic superior relentless headstrong defiant outspoken cunning
07:00aggressive opinionated demanding and single-minded anybody surprised who feels attacked okay camille was
07:09not happy with her results she was like sucking her lips and rolling her eyes charisma is about the
07:16willingness to deal with people's judgments opinions and critiques people can say what they want to say
07:21they could feel the way they want to feel honestly like i couldn't really care less my objective is to win
07:28this one's a little bit more serious we're going to do a series of exercises in which each of you is
07:33going to get up and tell a little story to let people see your individuality who you are the first
07:39exercise goes like this there's someone in the world i love and the reason that i love them is okay come on
07:46okay the person who i love mostly is my mother because i've been through so much with her and she
07:54lets me be me she lets me bounce off the walls and break dishes and she still loves me for who i am
08:00and she just makes me feel good inside i've never lived on my own before and it's hard because i haven't
08:07been feeling well and you know usually my mom takes care of me um i've gone through my life being you know the
08:13black sheep of the family and not having anyone to talk to or explain my feelings to and the one
08:19person that i love in my life is um my boyfriend eric and it's because he actually understands me more
08:26than anyone i consider shandy my friend and i feel bad because she's going through a lot right now thank you
08:31very much the worst thing i have ever done was uh the worst thing i've ever done is probably not be
08:40honest with my father my entire life just for the fact that he doesn't prove a lot of things when i do
08:44but my mother supported me 100 and i love her so much my heart aches for sarah because her father
08:52will disown her when he finds out she's doing this sarah had to deal with some negativity
08:59in association with her heritage i haven't
09:03that is where charisma comes from it comes from public self-acceptance the models that succeed
09:13do so not because of how they look they do it because they let people see their individuality
09:20who they are it was a good way to get to know what everybody really thinks but it's very difficult
09:25for me to come out and share what i'm feeling
09:27i'm feeling bad again and i'm tired and i'm just trying to just like keep on pushing myself
09:42because when you have lupus you can't stress out and it's difficult to do in this house
09:46so you know i'm just trying to stick in there
09:49my mom always thought that i look like a boy
10:04no you don't you were like so is the world
10:05she like i would i used to wear like my dad's um army pants but i like cut him and made him into shorts
10:10and i come home and she's like you went to school looking like you look like boom my mom's not here
10:16now so i can just do what i want and you know i don't have anyone you know pushing me down anymore
10:21jay alexander is the runway diva he teaches us how to walk and he's coming over for dinner
10:32and we find out that he's bringing a special guest i tried to call her but i don't know who she is

13:03other family it makes me very angry at them
13:11i'm not close with pretty much anyone in my family at all i couldn't go give them a hug i
13:16couldn't say you know i love you i miss you and it's just really really hard to deal with
13:23even though shandy's my closest friend house i never knew how horrible the relationship she had
13:27with her parents and you know the lack of love
13:34so remember this girl you have no idea how far you can go with your love you know how many people said
13:40when i told them i was trying out for this the word token asian to me that actually that's what makes
13:44you stand out even my mom because obviously she's the one who's responsible for me being asian she
13:48she thinks models are big blue blonde haired barbie dolls so she doesn't look at me and see

15:43much drive she sold me april i'm getting a sense you've got this negativity towards your ethnicity
15:49i'm half white and half asian okay just because i haven't identified myself as an asian or as a white
15:56person that doesn't mean i'm rejecting it april doesn't know what to call herself so that's what
16:01kind of bothers me about her she clearly looks asian and she should be proud of it is there
16:06anything that you're hiding that you're worried that would come out should you become famous uh
16:10probably the drugs and how did you stop or have you i was um arrested for um robbery and i got on
16:19probation for two years i just like being honest and i'm not pretending oh yeah i haven't done this i
16:23haven't done drugs it's like the part of my life that i went through and it's like in my past the whole
16:28time i'm doing all these stupid drugs i wanted my parents to actually show that they cared what
16:33happened to me and you know i wasn't getting that shani knocked my socks off with her honesty
16:39seeing janice i am intimidated i'm afraid that she's gonna break me down mercedes lately i've noticed
16:46your energy has gone down a little what happened to mercedes what happened to you girl
16:52i'm like oh my god should i tell her i have lupus and i haven't been feeling well and i've been trying
16:57to hide it um i don't want to make excuses that i have an illness but i do um i have lupus what is
17:05lupus tell me what it is it's a chronic illness in which your body attacks itself does that pull
17:10away from your energy it does i'm trying to really hard to fight through it it's just sometimes i can't
17:15control it i made a huge decision i just shared a little part of me that i have never shared with
17:20anybody else all right thank you so much come on in girls today i had to judge you on your charisma
17:29and the coolest thing is admitting that you have flaws that's what makes someone interesting you know
17:34the fact that you can be honest april you've got the most beautiful asian features so embrace your
17:40ethnicity embrace the fact that you are unique sarah you gained brownie points for me why because
17:45there's something about your stance on waving the flag for persian women i felt that you were being
17:49honest oh shandai back there when you admitted that you had a record you know admitting something
17:54that bleak and dark will work as a plus for you because everyone has a past and the winner of this
18:00competition goes to mercedes you win because of your honesty when you shared that you have lupus
18:09that's when you reach me and for someone to be that straight up to come out and fest that up we
18:14can give girls and boys out there faith hope and understanding i would never guess in a million years
18:20that mercedes had any type of illness that's why you win a shopping spree and you get to choose one
18:26person to go along with you there you go i choose sarah oh my god yes sarah the fact that we're saying
18:35that lupus definitely comes as a shock to all of us and the fact that she's working through it on her
18:39own says a lot for her now that everything is out in the open i just hope they're not going to use my
18:44illness to discriminate against me i won the personality contest and sarah and i are going shopping

19:08and it was very overwhelming to choose which item i wanted i saw the perfect purse for you
19:16coming out with having lupus i think that's pretty courageous i just said whatever it's easier to just

19:29i'm kind of curious as to what is going to come out in a way when i saw aquatic creation i was
19:36relieved that we weren't going to get thrusted with sharks or swimming in some sewage plant all right so

19:45is they still bacteria and fish use the bathroom it's just like whoa i want to introduce you to

20:21is very important because tyra told me that she couldn't see a lot of feeling in my eyes and i'm
20:25praying to god they see that this is not a challenge for how long you can hold your breath and just try
20:30to stay in the middle of the tank and make sure you make it look good you know what just get in
20:40too many bubbles though we're getting a lot of bubbles all right and try to stay down longer okay go
20:48you need to see that face more right you need to twist around so you look into the camera a little
20:52more all right go for it eyes are 10 times better that was that was gorgeous now you're working it

22:07underwater what you have to realize is it's more about breathing x spelling there and then just kind
22:13of sinking in if you do a lot of moving around that we get too many bubbles we can't use that frame
22:18it's gonna be interesting to see me holding my breath without using my hands i've tried it and water
22:22goes all up in my nose she's got to learn to keep her eyes open much slower more graceful don't panic
22:28you got a real content keeping those eyes eyes are closed in every shot you got to leave them wide
22:33open it's going to sting a little but just get used to your eyes just being open underwater
22:37oh siamara absolutely gorgeous girl but she looked like a walrus wearing chiffon
22:46i'm trying to keep doing my best not focus on everyone around me and how they're doing

24:48these like blonde hair white moms but i'm used to that because you look at my dad and you look at
24:55me and it's like that's your daughter because he looks like our garfunkel hey my mama's here
25:01and i'll just write in my hair and hi mom and she's like give me a hug
25:08tyra's mom comes over and we sit down and she uh tells us about how tyra got into the business she
25:14graduated from high school at 17 and that september i stood in the airport and cried until i was sick
25:24waving at the plane taking off by the time she left to go to paris she was fully knowledgeable of
25:31everything including the negativities she took it as a business not as oh i'm gonna run over here and
25:38have some fun and become famous and she doesn't get involved with drugs or partying or the wrong
25:45men you travel the world and you're in hotel rooms alone you travel to the next country you're on an
25:52airplane lots of people around you but basically alone that's how a lot of girls get in trouble
25:57what you have to do is keep a strong connection to the people who will be there whether you win or
26:04whether you lose i hope you all see your careers as more than just being cute magazines young girls
26:10today have such low self-esteem so i started a camp called t-zone y'all when i was a kid i was super
26:15skinny and so insecure so i really identify with my girls every night we talk about things like
26:20relationships and sex and beauty and body image so as a top model you guys really can influence and
26:27inspire now it's also important to look at your modeling career as a business this industry only allows for
26:34one person of color in that certain category at a time so like april if you make it you know you
26:39are the top asian girl at the moment or camille or you know cmr you guys are the top black or latin
26:44girls i may not look fully middle eastern but i like to represent a good image for middle eastern women
26:51now i realize you can't take it personally i'm very business-minded i understand that yes my look is much
26:57more dominantly asian than white therefore i must market myself that way to be successful
27:04sarah's mother's so cute i felt as if my mom was here in spirit
27:10do you think my dad's gonna secretly enjoy them in the limelight now it's hard to say with your dad
27:17you have no control over what he thinks or says or anything honey know that it's cultural it's not
27:22my whole persian family to hate you though sarah they love you they're not gonna hate you they're
27:27gonna be so happy for you don't be afraid of it you earned this so just get out there and be sarah
27:34my mom has just increased my confidence about a million percent watching you know mercedes and sarah
27:40it's like their moms know them through and through and of course it makes me sad it makes me think about
27:45how i'm not that way with my mom oh i asked him like how many people you know have recovered from this and
27:51he's like nobody recovers it's chronic you never get rid of it i know but i know i know you don't
27:55want to hear that but that's the reality so sorry okay it just sucks because you know i know i know it's
28:14if i show god and my family that i can be strong
28:18that nothing could hurt me with this disease i want to go as far as i can you know
28:25just seeing how much they've been there for each other and that they're real family they love each

28:56america's next top model the winner will receive a contract with my modeling agency img models a photo
29:02spread in jane magazine and a cosmetics campaign with sephora and we have our panel of judges here
29:08first we have miss janice dickinson she is the very first supermodel we have eric nicholson eric is
29:14the senior fashion editor at jane magazine nigel barker noted fashion photographer and last but
29:20not least we have our special guest judge nolay marin is your stylist on your underwater shoot and
29:25impress many as you all know so we're going to bring you in one by one for your individual
29:29evaluations after that the judges will deliberate and will determine which one of you should be
29:34eliminated this week you will be tested on your ability to act as a spokesmodel for pretend
29:39cosmetics line named antm beauty you will be evaluated on how well you present yourselves for
29:4460 seconds hi you guys here to promote my new beauty line antm beauty we have 500 different
29:49combinations so we are very versatile so you walk into my my beauty salon i will hook you up and you
29:55look like tyra banks and if you want to send it as a gift we can hook you up with that as well time
30:00you started off so strong but then you got nervous that's when you kind of fell into the home girl
30:06thing all right sarah you had an underwater photo shoot and here is your best picture wow wow i did biceps
30:13and everything but it's a little too biceppy look at the intensity in your eyes miss sarah yeah i look
30:17fantastic your eyes look the best i've seen them these girls want to be america's next top bottle so
30:23much they're able to breathe underwater get the title anything antm understands that every woman
30:29needs their own customized brand of makeup and we also understand that your body is important that's
30:34why we have tested all of our makeups to make sure that they're 100 allergy free i'd like to see a little
30:40more warmth in your eyes when you're selling the product a little more love coming out it was like
30:44we're watching an infomercial for the product it sounded like you were at an auction just but there was
30:50absolutely no personality and didn't make me like you and say oh i want to be like april okay here's
30:56your best shot wow it's amazing i love the muscle in your leg you look like you were just in a normal
31:01studio posing you don't look like you're underwater that is really hard to do even for professional
31:05models we do not test on animals i am not for the cruelty of animals we only test on humans um i would
31:13i don't know uh i thought it was very poor delivery a little scatterbrained sound as if you were
31:18selling sort of a cheap makeup this is america's next top model not america's next average model
31:23all right this is your best shot oh what happened there the mouth is open you were not catching the
31:29fish the fish were just in the water your eyes were closed we needed your eyes open antm beauty has
31:35created a and um the new antm beauty line is a hip new super glam look that can make all women feel like
31:44a super top model sandy it just didn't sell it to me you're too quiet you lacked confidence all right
31:50sandy here's your best shot freaky you did not work the blouse you did not work your face you did
31:56nothing but sink like the titanic the bottom line is is that obviously you did get a photograph all you
32:01need is one no we don't i want to see a hundred you know what maybe that's true no lay but i think just
32:06the way you're handling it right now this is impressing me because a lot of the other girls would have
32:10burst into tears with that kind of criticism antm beauty customizes your colors no more second
32:16guessing once you get at home or realizing you know i just spent ten dollars on this foundation and
32:19it's not my color yeah i hate that i hate that too you did a great job it's just i needed to have a
32:24little bit more force and power here is your bishop whoa it's gorgeous a little cross-eyed body rocks but
32:32the pose is the best one out of everybody the pose is insane i love it antm beauty is really for
32:39everybody it's for my mother who has white and fair skin or it's for my father when he goes out and

33:44top model and the makeup artists that i met they used the products on my face and i really liked it
33:50we test all of our products your time is up can i say one thing please no that was the time that was the
33:55time you're giving ground control to camille camille for me you were slightly arrogant you sounded
34:00pathological and it was like psychotic that you won last year i felt it made me feel uncomfortable

34:23okay sarah i think she's really coming into her own i feel she looks like an east german swimmer

34:32dropped it into that sort of ghetto thing there's an art to using that i don't think she's mastered

34:43on the way she sold the makeup tonight c'mara in all honesty we facially she's a pretty girl but
34:49she's very heavy in the bottom part of her jaw i think c'mara is one of the few girls who could be
34:54doing the couture runways you both are blind what is wrong with you what not i think that there's
34:59potential in that the reason why she's here is her energy was so great she just has this you know
35:04you know let me out and let me out i'm new york girl attitude i love it shandy shandy her facial
35:09expressions were absolutely mortifying but she seemed to have potential mercedes well beautiful girl
35:16she had a lot of charisma her face is really dead in the picture she looks like she's counting down the
35:20minutes like is it over yet is it over um but her personality is so endearing joanna i think she
35:25looks so serene like a baby about to be born in this photograph joanna looks like she has six fingers
35:30it looks like a lobster claw katie face is a little strange but i think she did a great job she could be
35:36a lot more edgy a lot more fashion forward camille she's just such a darn know-it-all i don't think
35:42this is the place for her this competition i think she needs to be somewhere telling people what to do
35:46rather than taking advice i mean she turned me off i mean i'm gonna vote her out tonight
35:59i have eight beautiful girls standing in front of me but i only have seven pictures in my hands

37:30camille you have a problem with people telling you what to do and if you have a problem with that
37:37you're not going to be able to be a top model cemara the judges love your personality but on photo
37:44shoots you lose your focus and don't take direction well but nevertheless i'm all about a girl with personality
