00:00Previously on Project Runway, I'm very excited to talk to you about my new
00:05fragrance, Surprise. I need something to wear in my television commercial and for
00:10the PR event. One celebrity wearing your garment can make your whole career.
00:17Cindy, what's developing here? A very slim fit dress. I don't know why she chose
00:23the color she chose. This is so much harder than it looks on TV.
00:28I'm feeling quite stressed. I've got so many pieces, this doesn't seem right.
00:33There's still a lot of self-doubt that creeps in.
00:38Keeping it real, you are the winning team again. Kate, you are the winner of this
00:44challenge. Thank you, Heidi. I'm going to wear your dress in my campaign for
00:48surprise. Such an honor. Daniel, you're also the winner of this challenge. I'm going to
00:53wear your dress at the press event for surprise. Thank you.
00:57Dream team, that means that you are the losing team again. Benjamin, this is
01:02probably the worst construction I've seen. She looks like she's been shipwrecked.
01:07Cindy, I'm sorry you're out. This is Project Runway. Team's edition. The winner of
01:15Project Runway will receive $50,000 in technology and office space from HP and
01:19Intel to bring their creativity to life and run their business. The fashion spread in
01:24Marie Claire magazine, the 2013 Lexus GS, $100,000 from L'Oreal Paris to start their
01:30own line, and the chance to design and sell an exclusive collection at Lord & Taylor.
01:35And the model paired with the winner of Project Runway will win a fashion spread in
01:40Marie Claire magazine, and $25,000 from L'Oreal Paris Advanced Hair Care.
01:44Come on, guys. Get out. Let's go.
01:57All right. We walk into the workroom, and it's all illuminated with candles. The aroma is delicious.
02:21Hello, everyone. I'm sure you're wondering why it is that the workroom is being illuminated by these candles.
02:27Yes.
02:27Yes.
02:28They have been provided to us by our good friends at Glade, and each candle contains two scents.
02:34One is Hawaiian Breeze. The other is vanilla passion fruit. These are two-in-one candles,
02:41and therein lies the clue to your next challenge. For me, they take me back to one of my favorite
02:49challenges in the history of Project Runway. It's an unconventional challenge. We went to a flower shop.
02:57For this challenge, you will be sourcing your materials at a flower shop.
03:01Oh. But this challenge is not just about me and my favorite challenge. Someone else has some ideas.
03:09Oh. Who is it?
03:15Hi, guys. Hi, Tim. I love the flower shop, too, but I thought maybe we'd change things up a little bit.
03:22Good. Because I also like the hardware store. Absolutely. So this will be a two-in-one challenge.
03:36You're going to be using flowers and hardware to make a cohesive line of six looks.
03:42This collection is the ultimate hard and soft unconventional material challenge. It really is.
03:49Each look does not need to contain both materials, but the cohesive line needs to contain both flowers
03:56and hardware. I wish you guys good luck and have fun on this challenge, and I see you all back on the
04:02runway. Thank you, Mighty. Bye, Tim. Bye. Bye, guys. Bye. So, designers, there is tremendous concern
04:12about the inequity in the distribution of your ranks. Keeping it real, you still have all eight
04:18designers on your team, and Dream Team, you're down to five. So we want to even things out.
04:25So, Dream Team, you get to choose two members from keeping it real to come over to your ranks.
04:35I like Stanley definitely because he has really good ideas with construction.
04:39And... But Daniel's been in the top so many times.
04:45If I had to choose between the two, I'd choose A. Stanley's very solid and brings a great amount of
04:50leadership. Okay, so, Stanley and then who melts? I think it should be between Kate and Leon,
04:56even though I know that she bounces off other people, she's still feminine and she's still young. I mean,
05:00she's got sexy ideas she does have sex appeal and she's got so she sees things
05:06and she says it dream team what are your decisions Stanley Stanley come over and
05:12join dream team please dream team what they lacked was direction and time
05:20management and I'm a super efficient person so if I have to play that role
05:24so be it and your second pick we're taking Liana I'm a little upset because I love my team and it's
05:35been working out really great but at the same time I feel flattered because they see me as a strong
05:41contestant and that makes me feel really proud accordingly team keeping it real you got to
05:47choose one member of team dream change but not one of the members who just went over we already
05:57know so you already know we know who's going to declare this one two three Michelle you were
06:08chosen come to the light I just really don't want to work with Patricia and really was hoping that I
06:15never would have to and here I am working with her I'm glad to be working with Michelle on our team
06:20we said yay and we hugged yay Michelle you're here each team has 45 minutes to caucus as a group we
06:29will be going shopping at a hardware store for 30 minutes and to a flower shop for 30 minutes each
06:36team has a budget of $2,500 now you have two days for this challenge your consultation time begins now
06:56we have to decide like whoever wants to do hardware hardware and flowers all flowers also kind of use the
07:05same color yeah yeah think nature colors like yellows lime greens pinks what we should do is come
07:12up with the theme I think of like like say like Dior I'm talking vintage Dior 1950s Dior Stanley has a
07:20great way of setting forth a very cohesive vision to start with Liana our theme is Dior it's not
07:28futuristic it's 1950s it's gonna look vintagey it's gonna look pretty oh I love that 1950s chic
07:35remember keep it simple yeah yeah yeah okay got it okay perfect first things first if there's seven
07:41of us okay what do we do what do we do who's gonna pair up I kind of like to do my own thing because I
07:47was paired up twice I want to do something very oversized I want to use string like garland and
07:54then construct a dress attach the flowers to the garland it seems like a simple form that'll be
08:00really beautiful I'm gonna do a dress that has this high pliable collar I was thinking about doing a high
08:07collar you I think we're there girl yeah yeah yeah design teams we're going shopping okay let's go
08:21everyone all right for this unconventional challenge we are supposed to make a look using stuff we buy at a
08:34flower shop and stuff we buy at a hardware store all right design teams your 30 minutes to shop starts
08:41now designers you have 15 minutes remaining we need some mini blind oh it is in black yep all right
08:59designers time is up all right design teams let's head off to the flower market thank you very much
09:04you got it okay off we go so you have 30 minutes to shop
09:10time is up thank you thank you oh that's perfect now that I'm going to make a dress out of moss try and
09:37fit it on the form then just start slapping stuff on it what are you doing you're weaving your own
09:49fabric yeah I'm really pushing myself forward in terms of the technology of weaving my own fabric I
09:56want my work to be recognized in a positive light I want my work to be recognized in a positive light
09:59you are crazy
10:01I have to just figure out each piece where it's gonna go and then just tape it I love that mm-hmm all of a
10:12sudden we go back to the bodice and we start bending the blinds you see that already bam that's really
10:21beautiful you guys it's time to go okay we need to have a little powwow okay with all of us we don't
10:36coincide with each other everything's looking cool but I realize you know what none of our stuff is
10:42cohesive I mean I'm pretty sure we all have some kind of white flour or magenta flour no we don't none of
10:50these garments go together we're all using both right yeah maybe your strips will relate to my
11:00friends I don't know we kind of feel like we need to just come up with a story to string them all
11:06together which feels sloppy this may really really haunt us on the runway coming up on project runway what
11:14is that disgusting you don't expect it to be normal it's not gonna happen at this point
11:20good afternoon design teams how are you all right I'm gonna check in with all of you so Michelle and
11:34Richard what are you up to I know that I grabbed on to the hard and the soft is the soft going into
11:41all of the negative space yes I'm blown away what I decided to do was make a floral cape significant of
11:52mother nature I'm making a oversized sweater inspired dress so the flowers are going on to this yeah the
12:03hydrangea grow she's gonna be huge I'm okay with huge I like it you just don't want this to look as
12:10though it's consuming her you don't I'm channeling the judges I don't want you to have the bottom look
12:19and knock your team off its current pressure I just kind of want to do this warm beaded thing the moss is
12:26more or less a background that's just kind of my just in case so that it's really pretty I mean it'll
12:30show a little how easy is it to fill in the bald spots that should be pretty easy and I've actually got
12:38scraps and I think you could have a very stunning look if you have a moss dress that's embellished
12:43okay I'm excited what I decided to do is a sculptural dress I tested this is that yeah I'm sure isn't
12:49that pretty it's different I bought these beautifully silver lambs ear that are gonna go around the front
12:55it looks like it's covered with frost this voluminous lady is my look the one aspect that I believe is
13:02important and how these are presented is that they not look like craft projects is it going that
13:08direction and it's going to look flirty and soft but you don't tell someone to make a dress out of
13:15hardware and flowers and expect it to be normal first of all I want to applaud everyone's ambitions and I
13:20have two concerns one of which I always have and that is time now here's my other concern cohesion Tim can
13:29see it from a mile away every single garment looks like it was made by a crazy person and none of these
13:34crazy people are staying in the same mental hospital seems to me very kind of decade like it would start
13:41perhaps with you and then perhaps we're a little more 80s and then to kind of futuristic well that's
13:47an interesting thought it's the history of fashion and flowers and hardware dresses from the decade I
13:52like the decades carry on like a hurricane speed winds so what's the theme I see our new look it's
14:02Dior Stanley gave us a theme to work with we had a very cohesive vision so I'm appreciative of that
14:08I built a petticole kind of like 1800 style how did you do it though we did a great job thank you
14:18Leona I'm doing a sleepless jacket but then it's a vest yes I'm just doing like a basic princess cut
14:28dress leave like this all the way down it's time I'm pretty quick so this is mine and I'm weaving my own
14:36fabric out of string good heavens I've constructed my own loom you built a loom good heavens just
14:46making the loom forget about making the textile on the loom Benjamin creates these designs that are
14:52unthinkable for what the challenge is you have a day not a month it's a remarkable piece I love
14:59structure so I started what is that it's a contact paper you're cutting out these shapes yeah I know it
15:08took me all last night and so this shape I want to bring this in just like in the beginning area and
15:14then what happens the rest of it I'm not sure I want to be a rain cloud I don't don't want to be a
15:18gloomy Gus but you have an unfinished top right now nothing else 24 hours from now the whole runway show
15:25and we'll be over and you've had more than 24 hours already since we launched the challenge you've
15:32got to do something because it's not going to happen at this point if my team loses I don't want to be
15:38the member who brought us down and I also don't want to be the member who's going home all right design
15:43teams I'm hugely inspired you've got a lot of work to do though you have until 11 o'clock tonight you
15:51will have two and a half hours in the morning that includes hair and makeup so work work work work and
15:56I will see you in the morning bye everyone
15:58hey y'all
16:04you'll be able to walk right what I'm making it's not like a sexy dress I'm making a sweater I just
16:13can't tell if it's too weird or not I don't think every piece of clothing has to have a sexy fit
16:19that's super ugly this I don't like that it's because I hate the moss nail too I think that
16:34you can add petals and I think that you should add the petals I'm out of petals oh petals are gone
16:41the dress looks disgusting it's like an astroturf dress that was not what I was going for at all
16:47I just hate to rip off all those petals and just have moss I just don't want to see us be in the
16:54bottom that damn moss takes a lot of time it's definitely a lot of work and as we all know it
17:01just takes one weak person on the team or we're gonna be at the bottom coming up on project runway
17:08I kind of feel a little stuck it looks like a pinata am I just this bad omen
17:15everybody else's looks are looking strong at this point and Amanda just keeps reconsidering
17:27everything I really feel like Amanda is the weakest link on our team I would love to start all over I
17:35just I would love to but I just don't think we should I kind of feel a little stuck what if you
17:42just chop this off and then go on the front and then add two new sections on the bottom done are you
17:50kidding me I find out believe it or not Joe comes to the rescue that works that works you made a panel
17:56of flower petals on your garment why do you cut half of it off and put it on the front that idea just made
18:02me dizzy it's GI Joe the real American hero way to go Joe okay folks it's 11 o'clock let's go home
18:11I'm gonna go down I want to go down in flames so long Atlas
18:31good morning designers designers you have two hours to send your models the L'Oreal Paris hair
18:49and makeup rooms and to prep them for the runway I know you're going to be using the Lord and Taylor
18:53accessory wolf so your models will be coming in soon and I will see you a little later this
18:57morning that's gonna be thrilling I'm so excited I'm getting this taken out because I know where
19:06you you know I mean so we can get you fitted this hair I swear it'll be done really really beautiful
19:21smokey smokey smokey smokey eyes because we want the lips to be nude and really glossy okay sounds
19:27beautiful we're gonna do there's a really fresh face strong eyebrow and a little bit of a lash really
19:34strong like 50s eyeliner pink lip pink cheek okay we're gonna keep it pretty close to how it is so
19:42we'll just put a little shine in with some of the precious oil treatment and make her runway ready
19:47just spray it and just like let it go fall back it's just like a really like a little baby
19:52kind of Beyonce Sasha Fierce yeah pretty much just like that and just down the back okay
19:56designers in 10 minutes you and your models and I are going down to the runway all right
20:08designers and models we're going down to the runway hi design team hello welcome to the runway as you
20:34know in fashion one day you're in and the next day you're out there are 13 of you here and after
20:40tonight there will be 12 one member from the winning team will be the winner of this challenge and one
20:46member from the losing team will be out for this challenge we wanted to revisit some of our most
20:52favorite unconventional materials challenges we send you to the hardware store in the farm market the
20:59ultimate heart and soft okay let's meet the judges first we have acclaimed American designers Zach Posen
21:07hi fashion director for mericulera magazine Nina Garcia fashion writer and founder of the blog the man
21:17repeller Leandra Medin welcome hey teams and you see there's an empty chair there we have a very
21:25special guest judge let's bring her out designers please welcome bed midler thank you so much and it
21:47looks like a good group really bright and full of piss and vinegar what can I say we will square designs as
21:55they come down the runway one of you will be the winner and one of you will be out okay let's start the show
22:02it looks really good the texture on the skirt the foliage that's dripping down the sides
22:18I'm really really proud of myself to me I think I have one of the stronger designs on my group
22:23I'm feeling pretty good about my look the colors are looking good I made something I like and
22:37something that is really like inspired by the materials ah the back looks so good
22:52our model coming down the runway looked beautiful it's so cool and so different from anything else up
23:01there 58 mini blinds and 64 screws and bolts baby
23:17wow it's looking fun it's really wild it's like Frida Kahlo
23:31she looks like an Ave Maria you know it's like it's amazing
23:35it's kind of cool how stiff the dress is it feels like super 60s which is exactly what I was going for
23:48and the back and the way the pins just kind of sway looks super cool
23:56my dress looks great just because I have immunity I took it as an opportunity to take a chance and do
24:07something huge and over the top she looks like a little strawberry shortcake I hope the judges can
24:15see how much work went into this she looks adorable I am very surprised when I looked over to the other team
24:28it doesn't look cohesive but each piece it's somewhat beautiful in its own way
24:45I'm confident in my look the top looks awesome it is everything that I wanted it to be and it's
24:57everything that I am as a designer I feel like I finally didn't let my team down
25:00she looks fantastic she looks graceful she's beautiful she has a little touch of diva and a
25:11little touch of like sophistication it's just perfect it looks awesome our whole concept of
25:20Dior couture in 1950s the whole vision came to life when I see my look on the runway it look magical
25:33the jacket it looked like a sculpture from the woods and the skirt the lily flowers at the hand
25:41it looked like a feather and folded together and I hope that it judges gonna like it my dress makes
25:52me really happy it looks so fresh and not just because it's drowning in fresh flowers I don't always
26:01really work with such bright colors but I think that I've pulled it off and held it
26:11it looks great I'm completely happy the leaves shining through the metal looks like it's it's fabric
26:18underneath there
26:19it's just beautiful whimsical it's like a fairy fantasy
26:41I'm so happy and I can see everybody loves my look
26:52looking at the other team and their cohesiveness clearly they were more thought out than our team the
27:06only thing we had cohesive was we all use flowers design teams this was probably one of my favorite
27:17runway shows today but we still have to choose someone to go home and this is going to be very hard
27:22design teams all the looks were so beautiful that we could not declare a losing team yes instead we
27:36have a winning team and an almost winning team dream team you are the winning team today
27:44keeping it real that means you are the second place team we felt that dream team had a little
27:55bit more cohesion and that's what put them on top unfortunately one member of your team will be out
28:01we're going to talk to dream team first and then I'm going to call you back out you can leave the runway
28:14all right dream team tell us about your beautiful line well we wanted to remain cohesive because
28:21that was part of the challenge brief so we decided on a kind of color spectrum to try and remain within
28:29yeah that's that's kind of how the color palette came about I think you guys did a fantastic job when
28:35your models all turned the corner and they came out it was really magical I mean there's really nothing on
28:41the runway today that I don't like it was fun it was just fun all around everyone was in a really good
28:46spirit and you can see the fun in your work it's all really amusing it's whimsical it's a beautifully made very
28:54exciting very exciting really bravo to all of you guys Samantha I love that you used a material from the
29:03florist non-topically it's always exciting to see almost a textile built out of layering I love the way you trapped
29:11those leaves it's almost like a play on transparency it just looks very fragile and very delicate so I
29:20love that juxtaposition and equally with you Liana's it is also so beautifully done the cage is really
29:30beautiful it's hard to do a cage romantically without it getting sort of hard and cage-like and I think it
29:36feels dreamy and nest like in a good way yes who on your team do you think should be the winner I think two has a really
29:44strong look it's gorgeous and the necklace how I use like plumbing and wrapped it in rope it's genius and Ben built a loom he
29:51built a whole big loom yeah I weaved the top part of my dress it's beautiful 250 nails later it was really therapeutic for me I love to Matt I love
30:00Matt I love Matt's as well I really love that I think it's very modern and what he did with the materials that he used is amazing what did you use for your corset a black robe and then a mop I mean if you can make the mop in my house turn into that body I would be very happy
30:21so impressive I'll never go to the hardware store again without thinking what can I make all right
30:29we've heard what you had to say we're gonna talk to keeping it real next and then I call you back out
30:35you can leave the runway team keeping it real please tell us about your line for this challenge we were
30:46inspired by fashion history so we each took a decade and that's what you see before you so tell us each
30:54era my arrow is the 50s and I just wanted to picture what I would wear if I was an Alfred Hitchcock leading
31:01lady and maybe going to a garden party as well and I had the 1960s so I played with color blocking and
31:09embellishments my era was 1970s my era was the 80s I had fun our decade was 90s my era was the future I have
31:22to say I liked your collection as well you took some risks some people might say Patricia for example could be
31:30like messy looking you know I happen to like it powwow chic powwow chic thank you it is it's cool I like it we
31:40were talking about it before this did remind us of Madonna mm-hmm I mean it is hard to execute this
31:46perfectly obviously because of what you've used the blinds material this kind of looks like a big
31:52sweater dress to me what you made yeah that's what I was going for yeah it looks like an oversized kind
31:59of sweater dress this beautiful dress I mean it looks like a gigantic version of what you have on
32:05today and I like that you're all played with different kind of volume and it shows like nice
32:11different variety I think you guys did a very good job that's why today is very hard to say like which
32:17one is really sticking out in a bad way sadly I did not get the whole decades point when these looks
32:26walked down the runway and I think that was part of the problem that they didn't look like a cohesive
32:32collection and I have a question for Joe did you have difficulty with your silhouette um yeah my work
32:41is usually oversized and I'm realizing it's totally inappropriate for this experience I feel like the
32:46fit actually is good for it's a good jacket shape I'm sorry it's a jacket well I pictured as like a coat or an
32:53oversized sweater you know so it is like we don't get that I didn't get that we don't get that at all
32:58I know that this is gonna be a very hard question but who should go home on your team what do you think
33:05Richard this sucks I love Amanda Amanda you know nothing personal good we're good I was delirious last
33:17night toward the end when I was trying to help her I didn't know what I could do we're trying to help it
33:21fall in place so that way yeah we just wanted to make it pull together so it could be a part of
33:26the collection anyone else feels the same way I do I do because she's such a good person but it was
33:34really really hard to see her go through what she went through last night too it was a lot of up and
33:41down it didn't feel that traumatic last night but maybe it was Patricia who do you think is the weakest
33:47link I love Amanda too we were three hours into the first day and I kept seeing her struggle with
33:53the moss and I was concerned I said just get rid of it just get rid of it I did conquer the moss though
33:58Joe what about you well I think she's been like working in the real world and has been like thinking of
34:06clients and you know when you do that for a long time you kind of forget about like your creativity
34:12that's true I do work with clients and so I'm always thinking will someone really wear this and so I've
34:19kind of lost that avant-garde edge because I want someone to actually wear the moss dress Kate who do you
34:26think is the weakest link for me it's just reflecting on who has been in the top on the team and who has
34:34been in the bottom and everybody has been in the top except for Amanda so far whatever the struggles
34:42you guys had with Amanda from this side they were not apparent thank you well this is gonna be a very
34:52hard decision for us we've heard what you had to say we're gonna have a little chat and then I call
34:58you back out you can leave the wrong way let's talk about our dream team I love how the whole thing
35:09tied together they were beautiful pieces yeah and it looked like they were comfortable working with
35:14each other they didn't pull apart who should win this challenge well I think it was Benjamin's strongest
35:21piece he's presented he's been struggling so he's been always up here to get my office in and today
35:27actually he had a really high score it was very pretty like I'm a high score too and he made his
35:32own move at the risk I was dumbfounded I gave him the highest score possible yeah I have two that I gave
35:38the highest score you can possibly give and one was Samantha's and the other one was Leanna like I love
35:44how Leanna even though it's very hard and stiff but still it's super feminine you know I love the
35:50pastel flowers that she glued on and where she placed them and you can still see the beautiful
35:55legs from the model coming through and it's dreamy it's beautiful but then you look at Samantha's dress
36:02and this is super modern I mean this is like what's in fashion right now and she made it out of hardware
36:08materials and a few flowers what they both have in common is this lightness and this femininity without
36:16hitting you on the head with it you know think about it it is metal mesh what Samantha used yeah
36:23create this extraordinary piece that look yes so light it's a complete illusion and it's incredibly
36:28successful however I do think Leanna's is a little bit better finished all right let's talk about keeping it
36:39real I felt bad for Amanda I did too because to be honest with you with all the grief she got from
36:47the other designers I didn't think this was such a bad design this is the only thing that I have a
36:52problem with is Amanda's is the execution because the idea I like to I had trouble with her proportion
36:59for somebody who is so aware of real women and real dressing unfortunately made her bust very low and
37:06very wide but I have a real problem with Joe's as much as I loved Joe this was even beyond me and he
37:14said it was a coat and none of us knew it was a coat plus it was not flattering you don't want to look
37:19like that I didn't really like his Michelin man take on futurism I don't know I can understand that a
37:26little bit in an avant-garde kind of a way let's talk a little bit more about Amanda because no one in
37:32her team seems to think that she should stay everyone said she's the weakest link it's contagious
37:38finger pointing yeah it's yeah in this case what they're saying what the team is saying the end did
37:44not justify the means maybe perhaps they think that dress was not worth the anguish that that team
37:49had to be put through in order to create it no one was really bad but it is project runway and someone
37:57does have to go home well this is painful so we've made our decision okay let's bring them back out
38:06designers you all did a great job today but as you know on project runway one day you're in and the next
38:24day you're out dream team congratulations on your first team win finally and Samantha you are the winner of
38:42this challenge we really loved your dress it was fashion forward and simply gorgeous thank you thank
38:57you all dream team you're all in you can leave the runway I'm shocked I'm completely excited keeping it
39:06real real you also did very well Kate Daniel Patricia Michelle Richard you're in you keep the runway
39:19thank you
39:21Joe Amanda one of you will be out and please remember that this was not an easy decision
39:31Amanda it sounded like you had a hard time and you needed a lot of help Joe some of us had issues
39:42with the silhouette your dress was not the most flattering Joe you're out Amanda that means you're in
40:01wow thanks you can leave the runway Joe I'm sorry that was a tough one well thanks anyways nice to meet you
40:13bye all the best to you bye nice seeing you all what I like to make isn't for everybody and I'm totally
40:22okay with that it just wasn't right for the judges so unfortunately my time is done
40:28I'm done just for this show the most memorable and positive thing that I've gotten from this
40:43experience is definitely meeting the fellow designers here I want to congratulate every single one of you
40:50it was a fabulous show but a designer is going to go home with every challenge and Joe I'm just sorry it's
40:57you me too but the world will go on and you will go on I'm somebody that has a lot of ideas and I think
41:09that my work is kind of profound these days so it'll find you sooner or later all right designers there is
41:20still some business to be taken care of tonight so I want you to meet Heidi and me on the runway in 10
41:26minutes what yes next time on project runway for this challenge you're designing for one of country music's
41:38biggest stars Miranda Lambert when I saw this I wanted to run for the hills there's nothing else I
41:49can do well basically I this one out shoot nobody has anything remotely usable from far away looks kind
41:57of like tinfoil looks like she had linguine where's your confidence you gotta find that dude it's just bad bad bad
42:04you just got yelled at by Nina
