00:00So, we're back in action.
00:03Excellent.
00:04All right, let's now rise and begin worship with a song.
01:00Your holy treasure splendor, God that we enter in the strife, Christ's kingdom to engender.
01:15Lift out from sin, my people, Lord, and strengthen us, O Father, bless our joy.
01:30For thy cross, we stand prepared to serve thee with devotion.
01:40We give the sweat of blood or tears for humble resignation.
01:49For we and we both are, O Lord, saving us, O God.
01:58O Father, bless our joy.
02:02Thank you, Lord, and my dear brothers and sisters.
02:08Welcome to the 16th Sunday, an ordinary time.
02:11On this 16th Sunday, we hear the gospel passage about Martha and Mary and about what's truly
02:20important for us, who are followers of Jesus Christ.
02:24Today's Holy Mass is offered for each and every one of you, for all of our members, all of
02:29our parishioners, all those we love and care about, as well as for all of our departed loved
02:36bodies.
02:36Today's Holy Mass is the contemporary writing on page 63 of the Patan Unisal.
02:43We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
02:46Amen.
02:47Lord, bless us with the wisdom, the praise, and the spirit, and the truth, so that by
02:51following your holy will, we may gain eternal salvation.
02:56Amen.
02:57May your brothers and sisters, let us not pause, confess our sins to God, but compare ourselves
03:02so that we may worthily participate in this holy sacrifice.
03:06Amen.
03:17Can we call our sinfulness in taking reconciliation with God and each other?
03:34Let us now recite the second form of the Confidure, found on page 66.
03:39I confess to our mighty God, in the presence of the Blessed Virgin Mary, all the saints with
03:46you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned to my own fault.
03:51In my thoughts, in my words, in what I have done or failed to do, I ask the Blessed Virgin
03:58Mary, all the saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me, the Lord our God.
04:05As an act of dependence for our sinfulness, let us offer up an hour, Father, this evening,
04:10before we go to bed, asking our Lord to help us listen more attentively to his voice.
04:19May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
04:23Amen.
04:24May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you with his authority invested in me, I absolve you from
04:28all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
04:33Amen.
04:37But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you beside.
04:46And trust your words to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.
04:50Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,
04:56is now, and as it shall be, for O God have come on.
05:01Lord, have mercy.
05:03Lord, have mercy.
05:04Christ, have mercy.
05:06Christ, have mercy.
05:07Lord, have mercy.
05:09Lord, have mercy.
05:10Let us now rise and give glory to God, saying, Glory to God in the highest, and peace to the
05:16people on earth, Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you
05:24thanks, we praise you for your glory, Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord
05:30God, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, you are seated
05:37at the right hand of the Father, we sing our prayer, for you alone at the Holy One, you alone
05:44are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, and the
05:50glory of God the Father.
05:52Amen.
05:53The Lord be with you.
05:55And also with you.
05:57Let us pray.
05:59God of infinite majesty, you have given each of us our appointed task.
06:05Help us to fulfill our responsibilities, so that when our Master shall take account of
06:11us, who may find us his good and faithful servants, and bring us into his eternal joy, we ask this
06:19through the same Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the Holy Spirit, one God,
06:25forever and ever.
06:27Amen.
06:28Let us now be seated and attentive to the Lord's word.
06:31Amen.
06:31Amen.
06:31Amen.
06:31Amen.
06:33Amen.
06:33Amen.
06:34Amen.
06:35Amen.
06:37Amen.
06:38Amen.
06:39Amen.
06:40Amen.
06:41Our first reading is a reading from the book of Genesis.
06:56The Lord appeared to Abraham by the cherubim of the long way, as he sat in the entrance of
07:03his tent, while the day was growing hot.
07:07Looking up, Abraham saw three men standing nearby.
07:10When he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them, and bowing to the
07:16ground, he said, Sir, if I may ask you this favor, please do not go on past your servants.
07:23Let some water be brought, that you may bathe your feet, and then rest yourselves.
07:28The men replied, very well, do as you have said, Abraham hastened into the tent and told Sarah,
07:47quick, quick, quick, quick, three measures of fine flour, kneaded it, and made rolls.
07:52He ran to the herd, picked out a tender choice spear, and gave it to a servant, who quickly prepared it.
08:00Then Abraham got some herds and milk, as well as the spear that had been prepared, and set these before the three men.
08:07And he waited on them under the tree while they ate.
08:11They asked Abraham, where is your wife, Sarah?
08:15He replied, there in the tent.
08:18One of them said, I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah will then have a son.
08:26The word of the Lord.
08:27Thanks be to God.
08:29He who does justice, will live in the presence of the Lord.
08:41One who walks blamelessly and does justice, who thinks the truth in his heart, and slanders not with his tongue.
08:50He who does justice, will live in the presence of the Lord.
08:54Who harms not his fellow man, nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor, by whom the gruffer weight is despised, while he honors those who fear the Lord.
09:07He who does justice, will live in the presence of the Lord.
09:12Who lends not his money at usury, and accepts no bribe against the innocent.
09:20One who does these things, shall never be disturbed.
09:26He who does justice, will live in the presence of the Lord.
09:32Our second reading is a reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Colossians.
09:38Brothers and sisters,
09:40Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake,
09:44And in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church, of which I am a minister,
09:54In accordance with God's stewardship given to me, to bring to completion for you the word of God.
10:02The mystery hid from ages and from generations past,
10:05But now it has been manifested to his holy ones,
10:10To whom God chose to make known the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles.
10:17It is Christ in you, the hope for glory.
10:20It is he whom we proclaim,
10:23Admonishing everyone, and teaching everyone with all wisdom,
10:27That we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
10:31The word of the Lord.
10:33Thanks be to God.
10:34Please rise.
10:54Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
10:59If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples.
11:04Alleluia. Alleluia.
11:10The Lord be with you.
11:21And also with you.
11:22A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
11:26Glory to you, O Lord.
11:28Jesus entered a village where a woman, whose name was Martha, welcomed him.
11:33She had a sister named Mary, who sat beside the Lord at his feet, listening to him speak.
11:40Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
11:44Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
11:50Tell her to help me.
11:52The Lord said to her in reply,
11:54Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
11:59There is need of only one thing.
12:01Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken from her.
12:07This is the Gospel of the Lord.
12:11Revenge be to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
12:14O Christ, dear God, come in the sky,
12:33As we hear your words, O Son, teach our hearts to know your wisdom.
12:51As we hear your word, O Son, teach our hearts to know your wisdom.
13:03The Lord said to her,
13:19There is need of only one thing.
13:22In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
13:25Amen.
13:25My dear brothers and sisters, welcome.
13:30We're going to talk about something explosive today.
13:34We're going to talk about TNT.
13:37Boom.
13:38TNT.
13:40Remember that.
13:41It's an acronym for something.
13:43Before we get to what's explosive,
13:45Let's talk a little bit about this wonderful family.
13:50This family in Bethany that Jesus went to visit.
13:54Martha and Mary and their brother Lazarus.
13:58The Lord had great affection for them.
14:02And we'll see in the Gospels throughout the year that he visited them several times.
14:08We're going to talk about those visits with Martha and Mary and Lazarus.
14:16This occasion is sort of a lead-in.
14:18This is where we're introduced to the family.
14:21We're introduced to Martha, Mary, and Lazarus.
14:25One of the things believed about this family is that they were well-to-do.
14:31They may have been wealthy people, right?
14:34Because they put on banquets.
14:36They did sumptuous things, and they supported Jesus.
14:40They were like his benefactors.
14:42They helped him along the way.
14:45On this occasion, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus,
14:50and she's listening attentively to Jesus as he's proclaiming the good news to her.
14:57He's talking about eternal life,
15:02the coming of the kingdom,
15:04the resurrection of the dead,
15:07and the need for complete honesty in our relationship with God and each other,
15:14to be transparent with each other,
15:17to be honest with each other,
15:18to be supportive of each other.
15:23Back in the kitchen,
15:26Martha's busy, right?
15:28She's taking charge of all the guest arrangements.
15:32She wants to put on a really nice show for Jesus and his disciples
15:37and all the other guests that were gathered in her home.
15:43Her talent was important here, right?
15:47She was talented at preparing and serving and making things nice.
15:54You might as well go to her house for dinner, right?
15:59She wants to be like Abraham and like Sarah, right?
16:04Abraham and Sarah, as we heard in the first reading,
16:06welcome these three visitors, right?
16:09The three visitors, in reality, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
16:14come to visit Abraham and Sarah.
16:18And Abraham is very hospitable to them,
16:21and Sarah prepares everything for them.
16:25And the result of Abraham's great hospitality,
16:28his generosity, his love for these visitors,
16:32and his recognition of who they were,
16:35was that they were blessed.
16:37They told Abraham,
16:43a year from now, when we come back,
16:45you're going to have a son.
16:46God's promise will be fulfilled to you.
16:51Now, we know Martha gets perturbed
16:53when Mary's sitting there at the feet of Jesus.
16:56She's busy.
16:58She's anxious.
17:00She's anxious.
17:00And she feels like all of her talent
17:02is going to go to waste
17:05if somebody doesn't help her out.
17:07Now, certainly she probably had servants to help,
17:10but she wanted her sister
17:11to be right in the batter's box with her.
17:17She speaks openly about how upset she is.
17:20It wasn't like she was mumbling on
17:21that Mary's sitting there at the feet of Jesus.
17:24What are we going to do about this?
17:25Right?
17:26She opens her hand and says,
17:26Hey, Jesus,
17:27tell her to get up and help me.
17:30Right?
17:31She's honest.
17:33Right?
17:33She's honest about how she feels.
17:36The Lord quickly sets things straight.
17:40Martha, Martha,
17:41you are worried about many things,
17:43but there's need of only one thing.
17:45Mary has chosen the better part,
17:47and it will not be taken from her.
17:52Something miraculous.
17:54As miraculous as Sarah
17:56going to have a child in a year,
17:58just as miraculous happens
18:01right then and there.
18:03You have to read the stories
18:05of Martha and Mary and Lazarus
18:07to understand what happened,
18:08but in that moment,
18:10Martha's heart was changed.
18:14Jesus set her straight
18:15about what was important,
18:19and her whole perspective
18:21turned around.
18:22She did a 180-degree turn
18:25about what was important
18:27in life.
18:29That's the real miracle,
18:31and that's the miracle
18:32Jesus wants for each
18:34and every one of us,
18:35for our hearts to be renewed,
18:37to be changed,
18:39and to be open to his word.
18:43Jesus' very presence
18:45brings new life,
18:47and Martha gets new life
18:49in that moment.
18:50Now, later,
18:52we'll see Jesus
18:54coming back to Bethany.
18:56Something terrible
18:56had happened.
18:58The brother Lazarus
18:59had died.
19:01Right?
19:02Lazarus was dead.
19:04And in the first passages
19:06of that portion
19:07of the gospel,
19:09what do we hear?
19:11Martha heard that Jesus
19:12was coming,
19:13and Martha ran out
19:15to meet Jesus.
19:18Not Mary.
19:19Mary sat at home
19:20with the mourners.
19:22Martha ran out
19:23to meet Jesus.
19:26And she declares
19:27very boldly,
19:29again,
19:29Martha is very straightforward
19:30and open
19:31about what she believes,
19:32right?
19:33So she gets up there
19:34and she's like,
19:35Lord,
19:36I know
19:36that if you had been here,
19:38my brother would not
19:39have died,
19:41yet I believe
19:42that you are the Messiah,
19:43the Son of God,
19:45and that there is
19:46a resurrection
19:47from the dead,
19:49that there is
19:50eternal life.
19:51I believe this.
19:54Martha listened
19:55to Jesus.
19:57And so she believed,
19:59and so she ran out
20:00to Jesus.
20:03Now,
20:05the family's well-being
20:06is well attested to.
20:08about six days
20:11before Jesus' crucifixion,
20:14where does he go?
20:15He goes to a banquet
20:16at the house
20:17of Martha,
20:18Mary,
20:18Lazarus,
20:19and Daphne.
20:20And everybody's there.
20:23Huge banquet.
20:24What does Mary do?
20:28Mary anoints Jesus' feet
20:30with aromatic spikenard,
20:33a very expensive
20:34perfume oil.
20:37So she anoints his feet,
20:40and she dries them
20:41with a hair.
20:47This is where Judas
20:49sort of shows
20:50who he really was,
20:51right?
20:52It's like,
20:52why'd you spend
20:53the money on that for?
20:55Could have been given
20:56to the poor,
20:57and actually just
20:57put him in his pocket.
21:02Here comes
21:02the explosive part.
21:04Here comes
21:05the TNT.
21:08It takes
21:09no
21:10talent.
21:12TNT.
21:13It takes
21:13no
21:14talent.
21:16Oftentimes,
21:17we think,
21:18oh,
21:18well,
21:19you know,
21:19I have to have
21:20this special talent
21:21for evangelization
21:23or understanding
21:24of the Bible
21:25or prayer
21:26or some other
21:27special technical
21:28thing in the life
21:30of the church.
21:30Maybe I need to be
21:31a theologian
21:32or a philosopher.
21:34It takes
21:35no talent
21:36to listen
21:38to the voice
21:38of Jesus,
21:40to hear him,
21:41and to believe.
21:44If we think
21:44we have to have
21:45talent,
21:46let's set that
21:47aside.
21:49We don't.
21:50I've tripped
21:51my way
21:52through life.
21:53Right?
21:54You know,
21:55I have no
21:56special talent.
21:57I remember
21:57I had to go
21:59for special tests,
22:00because they
22:01didn't know
22:02what to do
22:02with me.
22:03So I went
22:04for the test,
22:05went to the
22:05Office of
22:06Vocational
22:07Rehabilitation
22:07Services.
22:08They put a
22:09book in front
22:10of me with
22:10gears.
22:12They said,
22:12if this gear
22:13up in this
22:14corner turns
22:14clockwise,
22:16what direction
22:16will the gear
22:17down in this
22:18corner turn?
22:20Four hours
22:21later,
22:21I had no
22:22idea.
22:23I just,
22:23oh,
22:24pick an answer.
22:25They're like,
22:26you shouldn't
22:27be an engineer.
22:29You should be
22:30more in people
22:31services,
22:32right?
22:33You know,
22:34so I became
22:35an accountant.
22:36What do you
22:36know?
22:37But,
22:38right,
22:38it takes no
22:39talent to
22:40just love
22:41Jesus,
22:42to love his
22:43word,
22:44to accept his
22:45word into our
22:46lives,
22:46to be changed
22:47by it,
22:48to have our
22:48hearts open.
22:51Let's be like
22:52Martha marrying
22:53Lazarus.
22:54those people
22:54that Jesus
22:55loved so
22:56dearly,
22:58those people
22:58who took
22:59care of
23:00Jesus,
23:00who supported
23:01Jesus.
23:06Quiet
23:07ourselves.
23:09Quiet
23:10ourselves of
23:12all of the
23:12mess,
23:14the things
23:14that Martha
23:15was initially
23:16worried about,
23:17much serving,
23:19anxious about
23:20many things.
23:22Jesus says,
23:22quiet
23:24yourself.
23:29And simply
23:30accept what
23:32Jesus is
23:32telling us.
23:34It is good
23:35word.
23:36It is good
23:36news.
23:38There is need
23:39of only one
23:40thing.
23:41In the name of
23:41the Father,
23:42the Son,
23:42and the Holy
23:43Spirit.
23:43Amen.
23:44Amen.
23:44Amen.
23:44Amen.
23:45Amen.
23:45Amen.
23:45Amen.
23:47Amen.
23:47Amen.
23:47Amen.
23:48Amen.
23:48Amen.
23:48Amen.
23:49Amen.
23:49Amen.
23:49Amen.
23:49Amen.
23:50Amen.
23:51Amen.
23:51Amen.
23:51Amen.
23:52Let us now
24:01rise and
24:02together
24:02profess our
24:03faith.
24:04I believe
24:05in one God,
24:06the Father
24:07of the Almighty,
24:08maker of heaven
24:09and earth,
24:10of all that is
24:11seen and unseen.
24:13I believe in one
24:14Lord Jesus Christ,
24:16the only Son of God,
24:17eternally God of the
24:19Father, God from God,
24:21life from life,
24:22true God and true God,
24:24be God not made,
24:26but one being with the
24:27Father.
24:28Through him all things
24:29were made.
24:30For us and for our
24:31salvation, he came
24:33down from heaven.
24:34By the power of the
24:35Holy Spirit, he was

31:35Father, our powerful, ever-living God, we dwell always and everywhere to give you thanks
31:40through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through his teaching and ministry, Jesus showed us
31:47how we are to live, giving our lives in service to you and all people. Still hearing his
31:53word in our world today, we strive to follow his example and set our hearts on the world
31:59to come. Therefore, with the angels and archangels above the saints and the entire church, we
32:05deliver from a praise to your glory, repeating unceasingly, holy, holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and
32:14might, heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes
32:21to the name of the name of the Lord, O Son, and the highest.
32:24The prayer is found on page 82 of the canon of St. Hippolytus. Please kneel.
32:32We give thanks to you, God our Father, to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, whom in these last days
32:47you have sent us as Savior, Redeemer, and messenger of your will. He is your word, inseparable from you.
32:54Through him you have made all things, and in him you were well pleased. You sent him from heaven to a
32:59virgin's womb. There he dwelt and was made flesh. He was revealed as your Son, born through the Holy
33:06Spirit and of the Virgin. When he suffered, he fulfilled your will and gained for you a holy people.
33:12He stretched out his hands to free from suffering those who believed in you. When he was betrayed
33:18to his freely chosen suffering, thereby to destroy death, to break the chains of darkness, to crush
33:26hell beneath his feet, to give light to the just, make a covenant, and to manifest his resurrection.
33:32He took bread. He gave you thanks and said, Take and eat. This is my body, which is broken for you.
34:02In like manner, he took the cup and said, This is my blood, which is poured out for you. Whenever you do this, do it in memory of me.
34:17Let's pray.
34:33Calling that you who is dead and resurrection to mine. We offer you the bread and the cup. We thank you for allowing us to come before you and to serve you.
34:44We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your Holy Church to gather all in unity.

34:59So may we praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.

35:30Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
35:35Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
35:40Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
35:49And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
35:54Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, and grant us peace in our day.
35:58In your mercy, keep us free from sin, and protect us from all anxiety, as we have a joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
36:09For the name and the power and the glory are yours, now and forever and ever.
36:14Amen.
36:15The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?
36:21The bread, which we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
36:30In Christ's church is one bread, we who are many out of our body, for they all are shaped on the blood of God.
36:38May the union of divinity, humanity, and Jesus Christ bring us sanctification and eternal life.
36:45Amen.
36:45Lord Jesus Christ, who sent your apostles, I leave you peace, and my peace I give you.
36:51Do not look at our sins, but on the faith of your church, and grant us the peace and unity of your kingdom, where you live forever and ever.
