Airport campaigners have welcomed a public inquiry decision which will limit the number of night-time flights allowed in and out of the city.
Transcript
00:00Following a public inquiry, the number of take-offs and landings at Leeds Bradford Airport between 11pm and 7am will be limited.
00:09The airport had appealed against a Leeds City Council planning decision to restrict some aircraft from flying after 11pm, which led to a planning inspectorate hearing in March.
00:21Complaints had been made from people living near the airport, and the council issued an enforcement notice last September after LBA was found to have breached noise rules.
00:30Now a decision has been issued dismissing two of the three appeals made by LBA.
00:36The airport is currently allowed just over 2,900 take-offs and landings between 11pm and 7am in the summer,
00:43but the Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport campaign group said the airport had breached the limit in each of the past three years.
00:52The airport said that there was an accidental breach of night-time regulations in 2022 due to reporting procedure errors,
00:59but said it hadn't breached the limits in 2023 or 2024, according to its interpretation of the rules.
01:07Campaigners from Galba said they were delighted with the inquiry outcome,
01:11saying it was a victory for local people, the environment and common sense.
01:16The inquiry considered three applications for certificates of lawfulness of existing use or development,
01:22allowing one of the appeals which sought to exempt some aircraft from the night flight limits.
01:28LBA have said it's reviewing the outcomes of the public inquiry,
01:31and will be working closely with Leeds City Council to determine the best path forward,
01:36adding that their priority is for the airport to continue to fulfil the needs of the 4.2 million plus people who use it each year.
