Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Trinidad and Tobago and across the Caribbean. According to the Trinidad and Tobago Heart Foundation, 33% of deaths in this country are linked to cardiovascular conditions.

In response, the Caribbean Cardiac Society will host its 38th Annual Caribbean Cardiology Conference from July 23rd to 26th at the Hyatt Regency in Trinidad.

This year's theme: "Strengthening Hearts, Empowering Communities."

00:00With cardiovascular disease still the number one killer in the region,
00:05healthcare professionals are sounding the alarm.
00:08The Caribbean Cardiac Society and network of specialists across the region
00:11is working to combat the crisis by equipping medical professionals
00:16with the tools and training to make a difference.
00:20It's really a group of healthcare professionals, not just cardiologists, nurses, doctors, technicians,
00:24support personnel as well who are trying to help support cardiology care for our population.
00:32The reality is, quite unfortunately, the cardiology and cardiovascular disease burden in the Caribbean
00:38is comparable to many parts of the world, which is still number one, quite surprisingly.
00:43To strengthen the regional response, the Caribbean Cardiology Conference will focus on training,
00:49education and collaboration.
00:51The four-day event will feature an ECG workshop, targeting the local medical community
00:57and an interventional roundtable with participants from around the world.
01:01So it's a good network of interaction, collaboration, education, training, sharing experiences,
01:07deciding what works in one part of the world may not work in another part of the world.
01:11What works here might help another part of the country as well.
01:13So not all new things are better, not all new things are applicable,
01:16but many times it's trying to, again, expand access, expand education,
01:21make sure things that we are doing are accessible, feasible, but also equitable
01:25in terms of the healthcare environment for us in the Caribbean.
01:27So we need to understand, get your checkup.
01:31Heart disease is preventable, it's avoidable, it can be detected.
01:35Talk to your healthcare doctor, talk to your family physician.
01:38As the region faces increasing health challenges,
01:40The CCS hopes this year's conference will help strengthen professional networks,
01:46advance training and encourage citizens to take their heart health seriously.
