We meet the librarians at Market Drayton Library to learn about the summer reading challenge that has started.

00:00We're at Market Drayton Library and certificates galore. We've got medals. Hello Mary, are you okay?

00:07Yes.

00:08Cool. What's this all about then? I've heard there's a reading challenge, is that right?

00:12Yes, so we've got our National Summer Reading Challenge designed by the Reading Agency.

00:16This year's theme is the Story Garden.

00:19Ah, cool.

00:21I have never heard of it.

00:23The Story Garden. So you like your books, don't you?

00:26So are you going to get involved in this challenge, Mary, reading lots of books over summer?

00:30Yeah.

00:30How many books are you going to read? We suggest six, but children can personalise it and set their own target.

00:37How many books are you going to read?

00:39Wow.

00:41I can't read that much. I bet you I could read 10 in two days.

00:45Yeah.

00:46Wow.

00:46Let's maybe keep it more achievable, maybe 20.

00:49And if you read more, we can always change it.

00:52So if they read six, is it six books from a list? Is that how it works?

00:56It's six books that's right for their level, reading level.

00:59Yeah, yeah.

01:00So younger children may be sharing stories.

01:02Older children may want to read a longer book by themselves or maybe even challenge themselves

01:08to read a book series.

01:09Or listen to a book in a car, an audio book.

01:11Ah, yeah.

01:12You can stream a book and listen to a book.

01:14Yeah, yeah.

01:14Family can all share the same book.

01:16Great stuff.

01:16We've also got a challenge for any adults as well that want to take part, more older

01:21children and teenagers.

01:22We've got the road to reading, where you can challenge yourself to read half an hour a week

01:28for 10 weeks.

01:29You know what?

01:30That's sold online with a QR code.

01:32Yeah.

01:32That's so achievable.

01:33But a lot of us don't read as much as we should, do we?

01:37It's such a shame.

01:38I think people read more than they think they do.

01:42Ah.

01:42I think, you know, because reading magazines counts.

01:45Okay, yeah, yeah.

01:46Look at books, magazines count.

01:48Yeah, yeah.

01:48Audiobooks count.

01:49A lot of people listen to audiobooks but don't necessarily think that that counts as reading.

01:54Yeah.

01:54We don't mind how you access a book.

01:57So if people want to find out more, get themselves down here to Market Drayton Library.

02:02As we say, it's a national challenge, so it's for all the children in Scotland, England, Wales

02:06and Northern Ireland.
