We're at Market Drayton Library and certificates galore. We've got medals. Hello Mary, are you okay?
00:07
Yes.
00:08
Cool. What's this all about then? I've heard there's a reading challenge, is that right?
00:12
Yes, so we've got our National Summer Reading Challenge designed by the Reading Agency.
00:16
This year's theme is the Story Garden.
00:19
Ah, cool.
00:21
I have never heard of it.
00:23
The Story Garden. So you like your books, don't you?
00:26
So are you going to get involved in this challenge, Mary, reading lots of books over summer?
00:30
Yeah.
00:30
How many books are you going to read? We suggest six, but children can personalise it and set their own target.
00:37
How many books are you going to read?
00:38
899.
00:39
Wow.
00:41
I can't read that much. I bet you I could read 10 in two days.
00:45
Yeah.
00:46
Wow.
00:46
Let's maybe keep it more achievable, maybe 20.
00:49
20?
00:49
And if you read more, we can always change it.
00:52
Cool.
00:52
So if they read six, is it six books from a list? Is that how it works?
00:56
It's six books that's right for their level, reading level.
00:59
Yeah, yeah.
01:00
So younger children may be sharing stories.
01:02
Older children may want to read a longer book by themselves or maybe even challenge themselves
01:08
to read a book series.
01:09
Or listen to a book in a car, an audio book.
01:11
Ah, yeah.
01:12
You can stream a book and listen to a book.
01:14
Yeah, yeah.
01:14
Family can all share the same book.
01:16
Great stuff.
01:16
We've also got a challenge for any adults as well that want to take part, more older
01:21
children and teenagers.
01:22
We've got the road to reading, where you can challenge yourself to read half an hour a week
01:28
for 10 weeks.
01:29
You know what?
01:30
That's sold online with a QR code.
01:32
Yeah.
01:32
That's so achievable.
01:33
But a lot of us don't read as much as we should, do we?
01:37
It's such a shame.
01:38
I think people read more than they think they do.
01:42
Ah.
01:42
I think, you know, because reading magazines counts.
01:45
Okay, yeah, yeah.
01:46
Look at books, magazines count.
01:48
Yeah, yeah.
01:48
Audiobooks count.
01:49
A lot of people listen to audiobooks but don't necessarily think that that counts as reading.
01:54
Yeah.
01:54
We don't mind how you access a book.
01:57
So if people want to find out more, get themselves down here to Market Drayton Library.
02:00
Yeah, or a library near you.
02:02
As we say, it's a national challenge, so it's for all the children in Scotland, England, Wales
02:06
and Northern Ireland.
02:07
Cool.
02:08
And just show us that little medal again, Mary, that you've got.
02:11
Let's have a look at him.
02:11
Flip him round.
02:13
Look at that.
02:14
Beautiful.
02:15
Thank you, ladies.
02:16
Bye.
02:16
Bye.
