00:00:00For the 16th year, the Formula One World Championship has come to the little track in Three Springs Valley,
00:00:27about 12 miles from downtown Budapest, for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:00:31Before you may race in Hungary, you must qualify.
00:00:34Welcome to one hour of dramatic qualifying for round 13 of the World Championship.
00:00:40Hello again, everyone. I'm Bob Varsha.
00:00:42Here's Ferrari's team director, Jean Toc, being interviewed by one of the many national broadcasting entities
00:00:48that have come to what could be the clinching weekend of the Formula One World Championship.
00:00:54David Hobbs and Sam Posey are alongside. The clock is now running for 60 minutes of qualifying.
00:01:00The Williams team, obviously, not quite ready to send their men into battle yet.
00:01:04And for good reason, David. It is hot, humid, and very slippery.
00:01:08That's exactly it. Sums it all up, Bob. It is extremely hot.
00:01:11And this track is always very slippery, especially when they arrive here yesterday for practice.
00:01:16It's always slippery and dusty, and it takes them a day to get the track cleaned up.
00:01:19There you see the temperature in the hiatus. Track temperature pretty high at 104.
00:01:24That should help the Michelin runners.
00:01:26Generally speaking, this is a very, very physical track.
00:01:29Tommendous amount of turns. No long straights. Nowhere to cool off.
00:01:32And on a hot, humid day like today, it's going to be difficult for these guys around this very twisty track.
00:01:36Sam, twisty twack.
00:01:38Oh, David, you're so right about it. The twistiness.
00:01:41This track has almost twice as many corners per mile as Hockenheim or Monza.
00:01:46And, you know, unfortunately, it's drawn the criticism of being a kind of Mickey Mouse track.
00:01:51And if you look over on the right at those two turns, they do look sort of like Mr. Mickey's ears, unfortunately.
00:01:57With eight slow corners and a dusty surface, you want all the downforce and traction control you can get.
00:02:02And you will see many of the teams have sported new wings.
00:02:06Check out turn number 12 near the top there.
00:02:09That has been a spot where damage has taken place yesterday.
00:02:13And we may see more of that again today.
00:02:15Still, I like the track.
00:02:16It has an identity, which is slow, to be sure.
00:02:20But it is a real identity.
00:02:22John Alasi said yesterday that the track is slow.
00:02:24And he felt that it didn't show Formula One cars off to their best ability because of that.
00:02:30On the other hand, it certainly does show off-driver ability because it is difficult.
00:02:34I mean, it may be slow, but it's still difficult to get around it.
00:02:37Fernando Alonso on the track.
00:02:38Here's a look at the morning practice times.
00:02:40And the key thing is right up at the top there.
00:02:41David Coulthard got a total of nine laps in yesterday's two hours of free practice,
00:02:46having to rip the bottom off his car on those curbs that Sam mentioned.
00:02:50This morning, he went straight to the top of the charts in his McLaren.
00:02:53So, things looking pretty good for McLaren.
00:02:57Mika Harkin down there in fifth spot.
00:02:59Jenson Button improved dramatically from yesterday.
00:03:01Jack Villeneuve still having a very good weekend.
00:03:03Heinz-Hald Frenz, of course, changing, driving across.
00:03:05John Alasi right behind him, of course, driving Jordan for the first time.
00:03:09Although he had a tremendous run yesterday afternoon for John Alasi.
00:03:13Notice those enormous differences between the fastest and slowest guys.
00:03:16That on the course, which is only 2.4 miles around.
00:03:20So, it's exaggerated.
00:03:21I mean, if you can't handle well here, you're out to lunch.
00:03:25Alonso begins his hot lap.
00:03:27Just turned 20 years of age, ridding Formula One of its only teenage driver.
00:03:32He is trying hard.
00:03:33You'll see a lot of tire smoke on the unloaded wheels around this place.
00:03:38David, Bob and I were speculating yesterday about Alonso's driving position.
00:03:42Notice how incredibly low it is.
00:03:44I mean, it almost, like you line up where his eyeballs have to be and where the front of the cockpit is.
00:03:50And I don't see how he sees that.
00:03:51He's over the top of the cow in front.
00:03:53Yeah.
00:03:54Maybe he doesn't.
00:03:55Maybe that's the secret to his speed.
00:03:57His speed secret.
00:03:58Keeps his eyes closed much of the time.
00:04:02This is on the top of the racetrack, on the backside.
00:04:05Very, very twisty.
00:04:07The cars reach top gear, be that sixth or seventh, depending on your setup, just once around this race.
00:04:13We'll make that twice.
00:04:14Once on the start, finish straight away.
00:04:16And once, as they climb the hill toward the back section.
00:04:19There's the turn 12, where David Coulthard met his fate yesterday.
00:04:23David, you, David, you're a good one here.
00:04:26Bob, I think it's a slow track, and he was a slow driver.
00:04:28The driver would have just been perfectly suited for me, yeah.
00:04:32My point, gentlemen, is that just twice do the drivers reach top gear.
00:04:37And on only two other occasions do they even reach fifth gear.
00:04:40So they spend all of their time in the lower four gears.
00:04:44It is that tight.
00:04:46Alonzo, at 119, posts the first time of the day.
00:04:51No one else on the racetrack right now, so we'll take this opportunity for a break.
00:04:55There's Rubens Batacello, obviously totally focused.
00:05:04Speed Vision's coverage of Formula One is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.
00:05:09Located on the web at mbusa.com.
00:05:12And by Bridgestone, a grip on the future.
00:05:18Welcome back live to the Hungaro Ring, qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:05:22Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Sam Posey with you.
00:05:24The track is slippery.
00:05:26It is dusty.
00:05:26No one has gone out to post the time, save Fernando Alonzo,
00:05:31who has put a time of 1 minute 19.247 seconds on board.
00:05:36So he is the provisional pole sitter.
00:05:38And while we have this moment of quiet on the racetrack,
00:05:42let's give you a driver's eye view of the Hungaro Ring.
00:05:46A lap taken yesterday by Jacques Villeneuve in his VAR Honda.
00:05:50Now this shows you what the track is like on the Friday afternoon.
00:05:53That's coming up to the fastest corner on the track, this climbing left-hander.
00:05:57And you can see he's being very circumspect everywhere he's going.
00:06:02And this long right-hander here, look, just look how far he just makes a bit of an apex there.
00:06:07But every time he touches the throttle, this car just takes off.
00:06:12And I'm not sure it's taken off where he wants it to go half of the time.
00:06:15This is going along that top section.
00:06:19Just one corner after another.
00:06:21The one place you want grip is Hungary,
00:06:22and it's the one place they don't have it on that first day.
00:06:25This is the curb on the left that took out the bottom of David Coulthard's car yesterday.
00:06:32I'm sorry, that curb there is the one that took out the bottom of David Coulthard's car.
00:06:36Tightest core on the track.
00:06:37Look at this.
00:06:38Woo!
00:06:38Just no grip, a lot of understeer there.
00:06:40Just makes it a bit of an apex.
00:06:42About a 55 mile an hour corner, that one.
00:06:44And for this one, of course, it's an important corner because it leads on to a long straight.
00:06:47But again, he's just got no grip way out in the grass here on the exit.
00:06:52So that gives you an idea of what the track was like yesterday afternoon.
00:06:55At the same time, on board with Michael Schumacher yesterday,
00:06:58it didn't look anything like as traumatic as that.
00:07:00But certainly the track would have improved by this afternoon.
00:07:03But again, nobody going out.
00:07:05They're all hanging around and waiting to see who's going to go out and clean up what dust there is left on the track.
00:07:10There's the village of Moguerad.
00:07:12Well, about 10,000 souls live out in that direction.
00:07:16I'm sure the Formula One arrival back in 1986 was a revelation to them.
00:07:21Now, as you know, we've had driver changes.
00:07:22But in addition to Jean Alessi going back to Jordan and Heinz-Herald-Frentz and moving over to Prost,
00:07:27the Jordan team took the opportunity to switch car numbers.
00:07:30Yarno truly went from the 12 to the 11 while Jean Alessi got into the 12.
00:07:35We're not quite sure exactly why that happened.
00:07:38And we'll have more about that driver change later on in the program and tomorrow as well.
00:07:43Peter Windsor checks in for our Grand Prix coverage.
00:07:46We'll be back.
00:07:46Welcome back live to the Hungaro Ring.
00:07:52Still no action on the racetrack.
00:07:54Hungarian television focusing on Jean Alessi in the Jordan garage.
00:07:58At this point, Fernando Alonso with the Minardi European team is your pole sitter.
00:08:03He is the only driver to have posted a time thus far.
00:08:07So we'll try to sneak in some commercial breaks and leave ourselves lots of time when the field does pour onto the racetrack.
00:08:13And considering that this is a track where you cannot do a lot of passing,
00:08:17I'm a bit surprised that guys are waiting to the end when they know there's going to be traffic on the racetrack.
00:08:23Right now we want to give you a quick program note coming up next Friday.
00:08:27SpeedVision World Challenge from Portland.
00:08:29We'll kick things off with the Touring Car Championship at 8 p.m. Eastern, 9 p.m. Pacific,
00:08:33followed by the GT Championship at 9 p.m. Eastern, 10 p.m. Pacific.
00:08:37The cars you and I drive, the SpeedVision World Challenge, next Friday here on SpeedVision.
00:08:43Quick look up and down the pit lane, tells you everything you need to know.
00:08:49Nobody on track, so let's take another break and come back.
00:08:52More live qualifying coming, hopefully, from Hungary.
00:09:05Welcome back.
00:09:06Jean Tote, interested in affairs.
00:09:08But that expression pretty much sums things up.
00:09:11No one has gone on track, save Fernando Alonso.
00:09:15A massive crowd on hand, as there always is here in Hungary.
00:09:18And you hear the horns and you hear a little bit of jeering going on.
00:09:21Now they have someone to cheer for,
00:09:24as Enrique Bernoldi brings the Arrows Asia Tech onto the track.
00:09:30Bernoldi's been under fire a bit recently.
00:09:33Especially from Bertie, three weeks ago, who landed across his car.
00:09:39And after an incredible flying exit at the first start,
00:09:42landed right across Bernoldi's car.
00:09:44They only changed the engine, Cal, and off he went again.
00:09:46Didn't do any other damage to him or the car.
00:09:48Quite extraordinary.
00:09:49He has come under fire a bit from his teammate,
00:09:52Jasper Stappanis had some disparaging comments about him.
00:09:55But I know that he's the worst teammate he's ever had.
00:09:58Maybe that's because he's almost as quick as Jasper Stappanis in his first year.
00:10:02This team will be switching over to Cosworth Power Plants.
00:10:05They'll have the same engine as the factory Ford team,
00:10:09the Jaguar squad, next year.
00:10:10Bobby Rahal this weekend said that doesn't bother him a bit.
00:10:14He says, if we're worrying about battling with Arrows, we're in trouble anyway.
00:10:18We have the latest issue of Autosport here.
00:10:20And in it, it has an ad by McLaren asking for computational fluid dynamics engineers.
00:10:28Anybody out there who specializes in that, imagine computational fluid,
00:10:34even knowing what that was, much less having a degree in it.
00:10:37I can spell it, I think.
00:10:40Of course, I'm the guy that tried to make the noun diamond into a car yesterday.
00:10:44There's David Coulthard.
00:10:45David Coulthard's shooting up.
00:10:47Quickest man in the morning practice after getting virtually no time on track yesterday.
00:10:52He peeled the bottom off his car like a Sardine can at turn 12.
00:11:01A lot of people spun at that turn one yesterday.
00:11:04Tricky going on a downhill, a real, real understeering music.
00:11:09Donna Herbert has spun twice there in the race last year.
00:11:14I'd say people went off just about every one of the turns here yesterday.
00:11:19The track is used virtually not at all the rest of the year.
00:11:24They used to bring a motorcycle race to this track.
00:11:26The World Superbikes came here once, but it is virtually unused the rest of the year.
00:11:30So it is very dirty, and no amount of washing and brushing will clean it up.
00:11:36Even the bikes don't really clean it up that much.
00:11:40Narrow wheels, and only two of them.
00:11:44Michael Schumacher.
00:11:47He's got his helmet on, so...
00:11:49They'll be looking at the sector times, these guys.
00:11:53So, Bernoldi, just a fraction slower than he was this morning.
00:11:56Alonso, who's currently on the pole, was the second slower than he was this morning.
00:12:00The temperature's gone up, probably 10 degrees when they were out this morning.
00:12:05The hottest part of the day.
00:12:0742 minutes to go in the second.
00:12:08Watching Enrique Bernoldi.
00:12:12Luciano Berti is also on the track.
00:12:14Jacques Villeneuve has just gone out.
00:12:16Over in the Benetton garage, they've been working feverishly,
00:12:19trying to get the spare car changed over to Sue Jensen Button.
00:12:23His primary car suffered an engine problem this morning.
00:12:27This is Luciano Berti in the frost.
00:12:29Many rumors surrounding Frost, of course, now with Frensen behind the wheel of their second car.
00:12:45Will they be able to get the Ferrari at the end?
00:12:49We'll have to refer to Asia Tech.
00:12:51We're going to report...
00:12:52...the money for the Ferrari.
00:12:56And the number for that Ferrari, $30 million a year.
00:13:00That's the highest estimate I've ever heard.
00:13:03It's been one of the great strengths of the pros' team.
00:13:07They've had very few strengths, but the Ferrari engine, at least, is one of them.
00:13:11On board with Villeneuve.
00:13:15Briefly.
00:13:20See if he looks a bit better today than he did yesterday.
00:13:26Coming around, the Charlie's time line.
00:13:39Prost and Panisse went very different directions with the setup yesterday.
00:13:43Panisse going very well in Villeneuve 9.
00:13:47Villeneuve.
00:13:47Villeneuve, yeah.
00:13:48All this downhill stuff is also difficult when the tracks slippery and it makes the car run behind the steer.
00:13:56And of course, we've got to go uphill here, but it's quick left-hander.
00:14:02The old Heliocopter.
00:14:06It was in that long right-hander yesterday with the on-board camera that we saw Villeneuve having all sorts of problems.
00:14:12The car would not stick at all.
00:14:14It looks better today, doesn't it?
00:14:18I suppose that they have adapted Panisse's setup.
00:14:25He's coming up on the left of the curb.
00:14:30Right there.
00:14:31Did so much damage yesterday to David Coulthard when he went right over it.
00:14:35This is the slowest call on the track.
00:14:37He is going better, isn't he, David?
00:14:38Yeah.
00:14:39Looks a lot better, doesn't it?
00:14:40He was, what, 19th yesterday.
00:14:42This morning, just 14th.
00:14:45That's a very manageable car he's got now.
00:14:48It's turning in.
00:14:48It's responding to power.
00:14:53And that's his...
00:14:53And it's a full two seconds quicker than Luciano Berti, who had already displaced Fernando Alonso.
00:15:00And also, that's the quickest lap that Villeneuve has done this weekend by a bit of the guy.
00:15:05It's only 800 for the second day over this morning, but at least it's quicker than this morning.
00:15:09See the other drivers that have posted time.
00:15:12Jasper stopping.
00:15:13This is Kimi Räikkönen.
00:15:15John Alasi and Eddie Irvine are also on track right now.
00:15:19Kimi Räikkönen gets another circuit, which is his first...
00:15:23Yesterday was his first laps around this circuit.
00:15:26He was slower than Heidefeld, but generally speaking, he had a wonderful year.
00:15:30New front wing on this car.
00:15:38I'm not sure why they lose the picture at the top of the hill.
00:15:40It's a wide open circuit.
00:15:41They should have a great line of sight to the helicopter.
00:15:44Quicker than Villeneuve on that first sector.
00:15:49Räikkönen has become quite the bargaining chip this year.
00:15:52We're hearing rumors of high-powered engine deals being offered to Peter Sauber
00:15:58in return for the rights to his astonishing young rookie superstar.
00:16:10And he is quicker than Villeneuve's time at the second intermediate.
00:16:16I can't recall when we've seen Räikkönen at the top of the time charts in qualifying this year,
00:16:21but he may be about to go there now.
00:16:25And he does.
00:16:27Handle it.
00:16:28Seven-tenths of a second.
00:16:31So, 13-3 is a pretty good time.
00:16:34The pole position last year was 17-5.
00:16:37That's good to the U.S. this morning, too, by a couple of tenths.
00:16:40Here's Eddie Irvine.
00:16:41Eddie Irvine, remember, at the Jaguar, had a third at Monaco,
00:16:45which is a circuit very like this,
00:16:47and it's tight and requires good mechanical grip coming off the turns.
00:16:52Yeah.
00:16:53Wow.
00:16:53A little disappointing for Eddie,
00:16:55because if there's a chance in the rest of the season for Eddie Irvine,
00:17:00it's right here this weekend.
00:17:01Jaguar got great hopes for this weekend.
00:17:03They feel that their third place at Monaco could be replicated here
00:17:07because they feel this is a similar circuit,
00:17:09and the high downforce configuration works well.
00:17:12It could be a harbinger.
00:17:13A harbinger.
00:17:16Pedro de la Rosa following his teammate through.
00:17:22Not as quick.
00:17:23Bumping Jasper Stoppen.
00:17:24David Coulthard has sworn off steady girlfriends at the beginning of this year,
00:17:42but apparently he's succumbed to the charms of that Brazilian model, is it?
00:17:49Is she?
00:17:50I have no idea.
00:17:51Bob has all the info and stuff like this.
00:17:53I'm so far behind in the social panel.
00:17:54Keeping up with a Formula One driver's girlfriends is going to keep you busy.
00:18:00And here's a car that really does look still.
00:18:04Clowns over the last five years have always just had that run.
00:18:07A tiny ability to make those cars look good everywhere,
00:18:10especially over the curb.
00:18:11They just look brilliant.
00:18:13They went, oh, ah, that's got that nothing.
00:18:16Oh, oh, oh, oh, shoot.
00:18:19That's about the worst.
00:18:21That's why it's Errol Frensen.
00:18:22That's Frensen.
00:18:23That's just inexcusable.
00:18:24Even if he is unfamiliar with the car.
00:18:28Oh, he was trying to help.
00:18:30Oh, well.
00:18:31Ah.
00:18:32That was scary.
00:18:33Yeah.
00:18:35Notice the negative camber on the front tires on the McLaren.
00:18:40That's for the hand signals.
00:18:42Well, Frensen obviously apologizing, I assume.
00:18:48Well, it can be awkward.
00:18:51I mean, you can't simply evaporate.
00:18:53You're just looking in the wrong mirror at the wrong time.
00:18:55Well, Frensen's hardly at home in that post.
00:18:59He said very few, just one day.
00:19:01Unfamiliar situation.
00:19:05I'm assuming Kultard is going to take it pretty easy here on that set of tires so he can get
00:19:10another lap in on it.
00:19:12Getting back to David's social calendar for one quick moment.
00:19:16But there was a poll run in England recently.
00:19:18Apparently, David Kultard was chosen by 76% of the women responding as the men they would
00:19:24most like to go out with.
00:19:26It was Ralph Schumacher.
00:19:28On a quick one.
00:19:30He may depose Kimi Raikkonen.
00:19:33Ralph was very impressive yesterday.
00:19:36Steady and fast.
00:19:40Let's watch for this time.
00:19:43Bingo.
00:19:44But not by such a huge margin.
00:19:47Six tenths of a second over Raikkonen.
00:19:49Given the vast horsepower difference, probably.
00:19:52He's not so great.
00:19:53He may have had traffic on his run as well.
00:19:55As I said earlier, why they're all waiting so late in the session,
00:19:59knowing how difficult it is to get around traffic on this racetrack.
00:20:02That's puzzling.
00:20:03It's not as bad as often.
00:20:04I mean, we have got 35 minutes left yet.
00:20:08And most of them have been out.
00:20:10But they went 20 minutes before virtually anybody.
00:20:13But remember, Bob, the laps here are much shorter.
00:20:17So you more quickly run through your 12 allotted laps.
00:20:22Nick Heitfeld has just gone second, bumping Giancarlo Fisichella.
00:20:27So it is Ralph Schumacher, Nick Heitfeld, Kimi Raikkonen, Giancarlo Fisichella,
00:20:32and Eddie Irvine, your top five.
00:20:35But the heavy hitters are just beginning to roll.
00:20:37And now, Jarno truly goes to the top of the charts.
00:20:40There you see the numbers.
00:20:44Keep in mind, pole position a year ago, 117.5.
00:20:47So that's a 15.6 for Jarno truly.
00:20:50That's half a second quicker than he's been all weekend.
00:20:52So Harkonnen and Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard increase their times by half a second.
00:20:58We're going to be in the 14s.
00:21:00We're going to be in the mid-14s.
00:21:02Pretty incredible.
00:21:03It's absolutely astounding.
00:21:05Considering the fastest race back here is Nigel Mansell back in 1982.
00:21:09Well, 92 with a 118 in chain.
00:21:13And we say this place is difficult to pass.
00:21:15This man, Mika Hakkonen, back in 1989, started 12th in a Lotus Ford.
00:21:21Oh, excuse me.
00:21:24Back in 92, started on the back row and drove all the way to fourth in that loaded Ford.
00:21:31So it is possible to get around.
00:21:32Well, didn't Nigel Mansell start way back one year and win it?
00:21:35Back in 1989, it was Mansell who started 12th and went on to win the race.
00:21:41Hakkonen working on a very good-looking lap here.
00:21:48Urge, urging him on.
00:21:50Looks like Yano Trulli's tenure on pole is going to come to a pretty abrupt end here.
00:21:57Boy, look at the acceleration.
00:22:00A lot of steering input there, but he launches off the final corner and moves into P1.
00:22:09Again, the track, of course, is slow.
00:22:11There's no question about it.
00:22:12But I like it because you can really watch the guys driving the car.
00:22:17Montoya up into sixth place.
00:22:21That is his first hot lap for him.
00:22:30Michael Schumacher, nearly a second up at the second intermediate.
00:22:34This could be a big gap.
00:22:36This could be it.
00:22:37This is your mid-14 time.
00:22:38Just trying to look at him.
00:22:39Right off the bat.
00:22:40It's certainly a high-14.
00:22:41First lap in the round.
00:22:43Oh, my.
00:22:44Oh, God.
00:22:45You can't get near mid-14.
00:22:47That's unbelievable.
00:22:49Talk about Hakkonen.
00:22:50Might as well just put her in park and forget the whole thing.
00:22:54Sheep as crazy.
00:22:56And here's Barrichello.
00:22:56Barrichello right behind it.
00:22:57And we're going home the next thing.
00:22:59Boy, oh, boy.
00:23:00Ferrari.
00:23:01I mean, this is as theatrical as anything we've seen all year in qualifying.
00:23:04I mean, they wait.
00:23:05They're the last major team out onto the track.
00:23:08And when they do it, they put both their men on the front row within seconds of each other.
00:23:13It's pretty dramatic.
00:23:14Yano truly had just been on the pole.
00:23:16Suddenly, he's 1.2 seconds adrift of pole.
00:23:19That is.
00:23:20That's incredible.
00:23:21Imperious.
00:23:22Yeah.
00:23:22That's scary for the other guys.
00:23:24Recalling the days when Senna and Prost swept the year back in 1986 was amazing stuff from the Ferrari teammates
00:23:33as Michael goes for his fourth world championship this weekend.
00:23:40Welcome back live.
00:23:42This is Luciano Berti on a hot lap.
00:23:44David Coulthard has also come back out trying to improve on the deadstone last lap of 1 minute 28 seconds,
00:23:53having been balked horribly by Heinz-Harrell Frensen and the other frog.
00:23:59Here at Speed Vision, as you may know, we're stepping up our coverage of NASCAR Winston Cup Racing.
00:24:04Every weeknight at 6.30 p.m. Eastern, we have Totally NASCAR.
00:24:08Every Monday at 7 Eastern, 8 Pacific, it's NASCAR Victory Lane.
00:24:11And beginning August 26th, we'll have NASCAR Tech on Sunday nights at 7 Eastern, 8 Pacific.
00:24:17Now, we want you to know that increasing our NASCAR programming will not affect our coverage of Formula 1.
00:24:23We'll still pursue the rights to the 2002 season and beyond.
00:24:27We've got a lot of email from you Formula 1 fans out there.
00:24:31You've heard stories of the NASCAR channel and so forth.
00:24:34We'll stay with you in our commitment to Formula 1 and all of the other diversity.
00:24:39And, of course, you know, the announcement this week that Kart is going to show 15 races on Speed Vision next year
00:24:45and all the practice, all the qualifying, and they're going to have some magazine shows.
00:24:49So, a lot of open-wheel racing is going to be on Speed Vision next year as well.
00:24:52And let's hope we're all a big part of it.
00:24:54We will remain the place to be for racing fans.
00:24:57This is David Coulthard on a hot lap.
00:25:03Michael Schumacher is the provisional pole sitter with a lap at 1 minute 14.417 seconds.
00:25:10His teammate Rubens Bartichello is second.
00:25:13The 107% time is 119.626.
00:25:18Two men are currently outside that 107% limit.
00:25:22Tarso Marquez and the Minardi and this man, David Coulthard.
00:25:25But I suspect that the Flying Scott is about to change that.
00:25:32Oh, nice.
00:25:34He's having, he's got a beautiful lap going here.
00:25:37Good enough, certainly, to displace Mika.
00:25:41But I'm not sure that it will be good enough to, whoa, he hammered that turn 12 there.
00:25:47That's where he came a proper before.
00:25:49He lowered the 12.
00:25:52Boy, he came out of there clean, didn't he?
00:25:54Not right over the, out into the pit lane, I don't know.
00:25:56People don't really menace the Ferraris.
00:25:59Now, we may not see a World Feed graphic here.
00:26:02We do not.
00:26:03The timing and scoring has malfunctioned, we are told.
00:26:07So we're not sure exactly.
00:26:12We're not sure exactly where that time put David Coulthard.
00:26:15Joe Ramirez on the right with the black hat on, looking closer, adjusting the monitor.
00:26:19I don't think it's going to help, Joe.
00:26:21We haven't got the time either.
00:26:25Here's Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber.
00:26:27Heidfeld's been quitting himself very well this weekend.
00:26:30I must say.
00:26:40Okay, now we have the timing and scoring back.
00:26:42And David Coulthard slots into the number two spot,
00:26:45splitting the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barichello.
00:26:491.14.860 seconds for David Coulthard.
00:26:58That's a significant ray of hope for McLaren
00:27:01because they have been very successful in the races.
00:27:06Oh, boy, trouble for Heidfeld.
00:27:09That was a bit odd on that.
00:27:10It was a bit odd.
00:27:12Very scary there for a second for the young German.
00:27:15There you see the numbers on David Coulthard
00:27:18as he heads back to the pits.
00:27:20And a very relieved McLaren crew.
00:27:23One more scheduled commercial break before the checkered flag.
00:27:26We're going to take it now.
00:27:28Join us live in a moment.
00:27:34Speed Vision's coverage of Formula One is sponsored by Tag Heuer,
00:27:38the official timekeeper of the Formula One Grand Prix.
00:27:45Welcome back.
00:27:47Rubens Barichello is on a hot lap in the Ferrari.
00:27:50Currently third, as you see,
00:27:51behind Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard.
00:27:55Mika Hakkinen is provisionally fourth.
00:27:57Yarno truly fifth,
00:27:58followed by Ralph Schumacher,
00:27:59Kimi Räikkönen.
00:28:00Nick Heidfeld just jumped up to eighth in the Sauber.
00:28:04There's Juan Pablo Montoya.
00:28:05Well, that ruined Barichello's lap.
00:28:07Absolutely.
00:28:08He caught him on the exit of that fast left-hander.
00:28:11So, um, okay.
00:28:14So he's aborted at that.
00:28:16Jack Villeneuve is now up to ninth,
00:28:18bumping Juan Pablo Montoya,
00:28:20who then is tenth.
00:28:22Eddie Irvine, eleventh.
00:28:23Giancarlo Fisichella, twelfth.
00:28:25Pedro De La Rosa's thirteenth,
00:28:27followed by Jean Alessi,
00:28:28Olivier Panis,
00:28:29whom you see right there.
00:28:30Heinz-Herald Frensen,
00:28:31Jenson Button,
00:28:32Luciano Berti,
00:28:34Jasper Stoppen,
00:28:35Fernando Alonso,
00:28:37Enrique Bernoldi,
00:28:37and Tarso Marquez,
00:28:39who remains outside the 107% limit.
00:28:43Recall that he did not qualify
00:28:45for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
00:28:47And his seat with the Minardi team
00:28:49is definitely in jeopardy.
00:28:52Here is Montoya,
00:28:53about to begin a hot lap.
00:28:54As we watch Juan Pablo
00:28:57look for the new wing
00:28:58just in front of the rear wing.
00:29:01It's a white banana kind of wing.
00:29:03And then there's a second one
00:29:05on the roll bar
00:29:06near where the camera is.
00:29:09BMW and Williams
00:29:11have gone for extra downforce here,
00:29:13as have many of the other teams,
00:29:15including Ferrari.
00:29:16Two little winglets there
00:29:17on the side pods.
00:29:18Yeah, but that's about
00:29:19the only thing you can see.
00:29:20I think most of Ferrari's work
00:29:21is underneath.
00:29:23Front wing, too.
00:29:27Ralph Schumacher
00:29:28just jumped up into fourth place.
00:29:29Olivier Pannis, ninth.
00:29:32Jacques Villeneuve, tenth.
00:29:33Heinz-Arrel Prensen
00:29:34moved up to 15th.
00:29:35Jasper Sappen up to 17th.
00:29:37And Schumacher quicker again
00:29:39on that first sector.
00:29:40Oh, boy.
00:29:41This is where he puts
00:29:42the other nail in.
00:29:45The sectors are very evenly
00:29:46spaced around the track.
00:29:53Ferrari just seems planted everywhere.
00:29:55It wears you out
00:29:56to watch it, this place.
00:29:57Just one corner after another.
00:29:59And the heat.
00:30:00Hey, if you like to watch guys
00:30:02steer cars, this is the place.
00:30:04Schumacher carves three-tenths off.
00:30:07Used a lot of curb there.
00:30:08That's unusual for him.
00:30:09He likes to stay off those things.
00:30:10He's going to get into a high 13.
00:30:11He's going to be like a 13.
00:30:12It's possible.
00:30:18Juan Montoya
00:30:19just jumped up into seventh.
00:30:21Ralph Schumacher
00:30:22improved to fourth.
00:30:23No, we had him in fourth.
00:30:24Oh, 14.08.
00:30:28The guy is amazing.
00:30:32114.082.
00:30:34This is only his second run.
00:30:36He still has a couple to go
00:30:38if he chooses to use them.
00:30:39He doesn't always.
00:30:44Only got 19 minutes left.
00:30:46And this team
00:30:49has got to figure out
00:30:50what to do
00:30:52about the Ferrari superiority.
00:30:55Ferrari has got a lock
00:30:56on this thing right now.
00:30:58Benson Button
00:30:58now 17th.
00:31:01And of course,
00:31:01Ferrari has a lock
00:31:02on the championship.
00:31:04Schumacher clinches
00:31:05the championship
00:31:06by outscoring
00:31:07Coulthard
00:31:08by three points
00:31:09this weekend.
00:31:10Any three points.
00:31:11In other words,
00:31:11if he wins,
00:31:12it doesn't matter
00:31:13what happens
00:31:14to Coulthard
00:31:14Schumacher's champion.
00:31:17Jarno Trulli.
00:31:18Ooh, ooh.
00:31:19Ugly.
00:31:19That was a little weird.
00:31:22Very big.
00:31:23Jarno Trulli,
00:31:24of course,
00:31:24now under
00:31:25pressure
00:31:26from John Alasi
00:31:27on the Jordan team.
00:31:30Alasi
00:31:30coming in
00:31:31with
00:31:32all sorts of hopes
00:31:33for
00:31:34the last part
00:31:35of this season.
00:31:37Pressure seems
00:31:37to fade a bit today.
00:31:39Yes,
00:31:39it is looking
00:31:39pretty strong
00:31:40for Alasi,
00:31:41but
00:31:41Alasi
00:31:42currently down
00:31:4316 spot
00:31:442 and 6.
00:31:45That was
00:31:45again
00:31:45trying to prove
00:31:46that
00:31:46on this lap.
00:31:48The Jordan
00:31:48engineering team
00:31:49is always
00:31:49a little bit
00:31:50innovative.
00:31:50You see,
00:31:51they have
00:31:51one of those
00:31:51engine cover
00:31:52mounted wings.
00:31:54It's black
00:31:55just behind
00:31:55the onboard
00:31:56camera,
00:31:57which is that
00:31:57black cross
00:31:58right atop
00:31:59the airbox.
00:32:07I still believe
00:32:08that Alasi
00:32:08coming on
00:32:10with Jordan
00:32:10could be
00:32:11a big boost
00:32:12for the team
00:32:12in the latter
00:32:14part of this
00:32:15season
00:32:16because
00:32:16Frensen,
00:32:18a great driver
00:32:18obviously,
00:32:20his record
00:32:20certainly
00:32:20indicates that,
00:32:22but he
00:32:22had some
00:32:24problems
00:32:25throughout the
00:32:25year and I
00:32:25think his
00:32:26morale was low.
00:32:27Truly is a
00:32:28good qualifier
00:32:29and here he is
00:32:291.2 seconds
00:32:31off of Schumacher
00:32:31at the second
00:32:32intermediate.
00:32:34It is emerging
00:32:35that even though
00:32:36Eddie Jordan
00:32:36says he had
00:32:37no agenda
00:32:38when he fired
00:32:39Heinz-Harald
00:32:39Frensen.
00:32:41Let's wait
00:32:42while Truly
00:32:42finishes his
00:32:43lap.
00:32:44Nope.
00:32:45No improvement.
00:32:46Currently
00:32:47sixth.
00:32:47One and a half
00:32:48seconds off
00:32:48of pole.
00:32:49It now appears
00:32:50that this man,
00:32:51Eddie Jordan,
00:32:51was talking to
00:32:52John Alasi
00:32:52a bit earlier
00:32:54about having
00:32:54Alasi come
00:32:55back to his
00:32:56team.
00:32:57He proceeded
00:32:57to fire
00:32:58Heinz-Harald
00:32:58Frensen
00:32:59and then when
00:32:59Alasi's
00:33:00switch over
00:33:00to Jordan
00:33:01was held
00:33:01up by
00:33:02Alain Frost,
00:33:03Eddie Jordan
00:33:04supposedly had
00:33:04to go back
00:33:05and ask
00:33:05Heinz-Harald
00:33:06Frensen
00:33:06if he would
00:33:06drive the
00:33:07German Grand
00:33:07Prix after
00:33:08all.
00:33:09Frensen
00:33:09declined.
00:33:11Probably
00:33:12not quite
00:33:13using that
00:33:14word.
00:33:15Arkenen
00:33:16getting pretty
00:33:17desperate here,
00:33:17putting a lot
00:33:18of wheel
00:33:18over the edge
00:33:19of the road
00:33:19here.
00:33:19Getting well
00:33:20into the grass.
00:33:24As you
00:33:25just saw,
00:33:26Fernando Alonso
00:33:27is now the
00:33:28man outside
00:33:28the 107%
00:33:30time.
00:33:31Michael
00:33:32Schumacher
00:33:32improved pole,
00:33:33so obviously
00:33:34the 107%
00:33:35time comes
00:33:35down,
00:33:36and Tarzo
00:33:37Marquez
00:33:37managed to
00:33:38put in a
00:33:38hotter lap
00:33:39than his
00:33:39teammate,
00:33:40so Minardi
00:33:40still has
00:33:41one foot
00:33:42outside the
00:33:43race,
00:33:43so to speak.
00:33:44Boy,
00:33:44talk about
00:33:45riding the
00:33:45curves.
00:33:46He was over
00:33:46the inside
00:33:47one and
00:33:47outside of
00:33:48the outside
00:33:49one.
00:33:49Seen to
00:33:50play record
00:33:51too,
00:33:51that can
00:33:51be.
00:33:53Unusual,
00:33:54I see
00:33:54Mika so
00:33:55untidy,
00:33:55particularly
00:33:56here where
00:33:56he has won
00:33:57the last
00:33:57two Hungarian
00:33:59GPs.
00:34:01Fifteen and
00:34:01a half
00:34:02minutes to
00:34:02go in the
00:34:03session.
00:34:04Cluthard
00:34:06comes back
00:34:07out.
00:34:09Knowing
00:34:09that he
00:34:09has to
00:34:09pick up
00:34:10nearly
00:34:10a second.
00:34:12This is
00:34:12Kimi
00:34:12Raikkonen.
00:34:13Excuse me,
00:34:14Nick Heidfeldt.
00:34:15The runs
00:34:15take such
00:34:16a short
00:34:16period of
00:34:17time
00:34:17to do
00:34:19three laps
00:34:19around this
00:34:20two and a
00:34:21half mile
00:34:21track.
00:34:22The Formula
00:34:22One version
00:34:23of a
00:34:23short track.
00:34:24Heidfeldt
00:34:24decided to
00:34:25pull that
00:34:25one too.
00:34:27The
00:34:28architecture
00:34:28here is
00:34:29not
00:34:29particularly
00:34:30memorable,
00:34:31is it,
00:34:31gentlemen?
00:34:31It certainly
00:34:33recalls the
00:34:34days of the
00:34:34Cold War.
00:34:36This track
00:34:36was introduced
00:34:37to Formula
00:34:37One back
00:34:38in 1986,
00:34:39and as I
00:34:39mentioned on
00:34:40yesterday's
00:34:40practice show,
00:34:41the track has
00:34:42virtually no
00:34:43spectator amenities.
00:34:44The big
00:34:45awning you see
00:34:46over the main
00:34:46grandstand wasn't
00:34:47there back in
00:34:47the 80s.
00:34:48We drove up a
00:34:49dirt road to get
00:34:50into this place.
00:34:51There is nothing
00:34:51on the infield,
00:34:52no concession
00:34:53stands for the
00:34:54fans.
00:34:55Part of the
00:34:55reason for that,
00:34:56we are told,
00:34:56is that the land
00:34:57that was acquired
00:34:58for the
00:34:58racetrack was
00:35:00simply that,
00:35:01the racetrack,
00:35:01not the infield,
00:35:03nothing outside the
00:35:04borders of the
00:35:05immediate racing
00:35:05surface.
00:35:06As a result,
00:35:07there's been a
00:35:07lot of bickering
00:35:08over the years
00:35:09as they try to
00:35:09acquire more
00:35:10land to build
00:35:11the sort of
00:35:11amenities that
00:35:12you have to
00:35:12have in this
00:35:13day and age.
00:35:13Well, the
00:35:14chief amenities
00:35:14seem to be
00:35:15that brothel
00:35:16that was nearby,
00:35:17but that's been
00:35:18closed down.
00:35:19Last year, right.
00:35:20What was that
00:35:21called,
00:35:21Mom?
00:35:22Erotic
00:35:22camping.
00:35:25Love it.
00:35:26Well, it
00:35:28brings up a
00:35:29good point,
00:35:29however,
00:35:30in this day
00:35:30and age,
00:35:31as amenities
00:35:31are demanded
00:35:32of Formula
00:35:33One tracks
00:35:33lest they
00:35:34lose their
00:35:34place on
00:35:35the schedule.
00:35:35It's amazing
00:35:36that a place
00:35:36like Hungary
00:35:37continues to
00:35:39exist on
00:35:39the schedule
00:35:40because it
00:35:40really offers
00:35:41nothing.
00:35:41FIA keep
00:35:42whining on
00:35:43about Silverstone
00:35:43and the traffic
00:35:44was the problem
00:35:45this year,
00:35:46but the traffic
00:35:46at Silverstone,
00:35:47A, is nothing
00:35:48compared to the
00:35:48traffic here,
00:35:49and the crowd
00:35:50here is nothing
00:35:51compared to the
00:35:52crowd at Silverstone.
00:35:52That's what they
00:35:53keep forgetting,
00:35:54is that Silverstone
00:35:54has such a
00:35:55massive crowd.
00:35:56What you see
00:35:57is not always
00:35:58what you get
00:35:59when it comes
00:35:59to it.
00:36:02And Silverstone
00:36:03has spent
00:36:03millions
00:36:04over the last
00:36:06ten years.
00:36:06And plans to
00:36:07spend millions
00:36:07more.
00:36:08Plans to spend
00:36:09another 40
00:36:10on top of
00:36:10the 16 or
00:36:1118 million
00:36:11they've already
00:36:12spent.
00:36:13As a member
00:36:13of the British
00:36:14Racing Drivers
00:36:14Club,
00:36:15which owns
00:36:15Silverstone,
00:36:16I'm sure you
00:36:17have been studying
00:36:18each line item
00:36:19in the budget.
00:36:20Well, not
00:36:20exactly,
00:36:21but I certainly
00:36:21show more
00:36:23than the cursory
00:36:23in the budget.
00:36:25Well, of course,
00:36:26this track
00:36:27here is
00:36:28symbolic
00:36:29of a part
00:36:30of the world
00:36:31once covered
00:36:32in the Cold
00:36:33War.
00:36:34It's an Iron
00:36:34Curtain country,
00:36:35and it's a huge
00:36:36cigarette market.
00:36:38And you notice
00:36:38that Marlboro
00:36:40is very much
00:36:41in evidence
00:36:41as are the
00:36:42others.
00:36:42And Budapest
00:36:43is a spectacular
00:36:44town.
00:36:45It's about
00:36:4510 or 12
00:36:45miles away.
00:36:49No improvement.
00:36:50No improvement.
00:36:51In fact,
00:36:51his time
00:36:51was no
00:36:52improvement.
00:36:53No.
00:36:53It was worse,
00:36:54but he's still
00:36:54in fifth place
00:36:57time.
00:36:58He holds on
00:36:59to his third
00:36:59place.
00:37:00Here is
00:37:00Coulthard
00:37:00to the line.
00:37:02No,
00:37:03he's slow.
00:37:03He was 0.8
00:37:04off before,
00:37:05now he's
00:37:05over second.
00:37:06I wonder if
00:37:06something's
00:37:07happening on
00:37:07the racetrack
00:37:08that's causing
00:37:08all the drivers
00:37:09to abort the left,
00:37:10but they know
00:37:10they're not
00:37:11quicker.
00:37:12Well,
00:37:12they're trying
00:37:13different setups
00:37:14and I suppose
00:37:14they...
00:37:15Villeneuve and
00:37:18Frensen.
00:37:19Frensen
00:37:19holding up
00:37:20yet another...
00:37:22Frensen's
00:37:23not having
00:37:23a very good
00:37:24day.
00:37:24He's not
00:37:24going to be
00:37:25voted
00:37:25most congenial.
00:37:27And he ran
00:37:28into that
00:37:28problem
00:37:29last year
00:37:30too.
00:37:33Holding
00:37:33people up
00:37:34and having
00:37:34contractime
00:37:35in qualifying.
00:37:37Villeneuve's
00:37:37going to have
00:37:38to get himself
00:37:38together now.
00:37:39A lot of
00:37:39steering wheel
00:37:40input there
00:37:40as he turned
00:37:41into that
00:37:41corner.
00:37:42Looks like
00:37:43he's got
00:37:43some grip
00:37:43though,
00:37:44David.
00:37:44Currently
00:37:4412th.
00:37:45Boy,
00:37:45he's just
00:37:46packing the
00:37:48car around
00:37:48about.
00:37:50It looks
00:37:51twitchier to
00:37:51me.
00:37:52It sure
00:37:52does.
00:37:53That's the
00:37:53sort of
00:37:53buzzsaw
00:37:54approach
00:37:54to taking
00:37:55a turn.
00:37:56First
00:37:56intermediate.
00:37:58Seven-tenths
00:37:59off.
00:37:59Second fastest
00:38:00part of the
00:38:00racetrack
00:38:01right there.
00:38:01There comes
00:38:01a long
00:38:02right-hander.
00:38:02that projects
00:38:03a lap
00:38:04two seconds
00:38:05off
00:38:05Schumacher's.
00:38:07Wow,
00:38:08that's a
00:38:08huge lap
00:38:09in just
00:38:09a 23-second
00:38:10segment.
00:38:11And it
00:38:12looks fast.
00:38:13That's the
00:38:13scary bit.
00:38:14It probably
00:38:15feels fast
00:38:15too.
00:38:16We've been
00:38:20hearing a lot
00:38:20this summer
00:38:21about heat
00:38:22indexes,
00:38:23especially in
00:38:23the Midwest,
00:38:23you know,
00:38:2495-degree days
00:38:25with a heat
00:38:25index of
00:38:25125.
00:38:27I would say
00:38:27that Villeneuve
00:38:28has definitely
00:38:29got a speed
00:38:29index.
00:38:30This obviously
00:38:30feels a heck
00:38:31of a lot
00:38:31faster than
00:38:32it is.
00:38:34Maybe we
00:38:34should have
00:38:34our own
00:38:35heat,
00:38:36speed,
00:38:36and tight
00:38:37track index.
00:38:38This is a
00:38:38240 on that
00:38:39scale.
00:38:40He gave up
00:38:40one.
00:38:41I mean,
00:38:41wow,
00:38:42after all
00:38:42that work.
00:38:43Yeah.
00:38:43I'm sure
00:38:44the dashboard
00:38:44showed him
00:38:45that he wasn't
00:38:45going to get
00:38:46anything out
00:38:47of the
00:38:47two-and-a-half
00:38:48seconds by
00:38:49which he
00:38:49currently trails
00:38:50Michael Schumacher.
00:38:52Honda engine
00:38:52is there
00:38:53looking a
00:38:53little bit
00:38:54disconsolate
00:38:54knowing their
00:38:55engine is
00:38:55probably as
00:38:56much as
00:38:5650 horsepower
00:38:57off the
00:38:57BMW.
00:38:58While the
00:38:58BAR crewmen
00:38:59were all
00:39:00smiles.
00:39:00They were.
00:39:01There's
00:39:02Mika Hakkinen.
00:39:05I noted
00:39:06in one of
00:39:06the British
00:39:06enthusiast
00:39:07magazines
00:39:07recently,
00:39:08the writer
00:39:08noted that
00:39:09of all the
00:39:10teams,
00:39:10BAR is the
00:39:11only one
00:39:12that is not
00:39:13running a
00:39:1324-hour-a-day,
00:39:14seven-day-a-week
00:39:15aerodynamic
00:39:16length on the
00:39:17program.
00:39:18Pretty
00:39:19staggering
00:39:19thought.
00:39:24You see
00:39:25Ralph Schumacher
00:39:26has the top
00:39:26speed in a
00:39:27straight line.
00:39:28You're used to
00:39:28seeing that
00:39:29BMW engine
00:39:30in combination
00:39:31with the
00:39:32Williams chassis
00:39:32and Michelin
00:39:33tires, nearly
00:39:34always the
00:39:35fastest cars
00:39:36in the speed
00:39:36traps.
00:39:38Well, you see
00:39:38the McLaren
00:39:39there is a lot
00:39:40slower down
00:39:41the straight
00:39:41than the
00:39:41BMW engine
00:39:42cars and
00:39:43of course
00:39:43this is
00:39:43because
00:39:44everybody's
00:39:44piling on
00:39:44all this
00:39:45downforce
00:39:45to get
00:39:46them around
00:39:46the track
00:39:47quick and
00:39:49obviously
00:39:49the Williams
00:39:50doesn't have
00:39:50the grip
00:39:51required here
00:39:52whereas the
00:39:52Williams
00:39:52in the
00:39:53ground
00:39:53seems to
00:39:53have a bit
00:39:54of grip
00:39:55but way
00:39:55off on
00:39:55top speed
00:39:56and that's
00:39:56that extra
00:39:57horsepower
00:39:57the BMW
00:39:58cranked out
00:39:58top speed
00:39:59only 175
00:40:00miles an
00:40:01hour
00:40:01and reached
00:40:02only once
00:40:03on the
00:40:03track
00:40:03and that
00:40:04very, very
00:40:04briefly
00:40:05so top speed
00:40:06not an issue
00:40:07at all
00:40:07still looking
00:40:08pretty twitchy
00:40:09at that one
00:40:09spot though
00:40:10just back
00:40:10there
00:40:10some amazing
00:40:13car control
00:40:14from Hackenden
00:40:15there
00:40:15those curbs
00:40:16at turn 12
00:40:17were put in
00:40:18and none of
00:40:18the teams
00:40:19were informed
00:40:20of them
00:40:21and of course
00:40:22oh
00:40:23wow
00:40:24Montoya
00:40:25like
00:40:25in sliding
00:40:26Montoya
00:40:27had a beautiful
00:40:27slide like that
00:40:28yesterday
00:40:291.6 seconds
00:40:32back
00:40:32notice that
00:40:33burst of
00:40:34tire rubber
00:40:35left on the
00:40:36track
00:40:36as the car
00:40:37lost grip
00:40:38and then
00:40:38regained it
00:40:39you can imagine
00:40:40the permutations
00:40:41the onboard
00:40:41computer went
00:40:42through
00:40:43and the
00:40:43traction control
00:40:44system
00:40:44trying to
00:40:44figure out
00:40:45what was
00:40:45going on
00:40:46and how
00:40:46do we
00:40:47fix it
00:40:47well Bob
00:40:48you mentioned
00:40:48traction control
00:40:49there
00:40:49of course
00:40:50the word
00:40:50was that
00:40:51when traction
00:40:51control
00:40:52came in
00:40:52we wouldn't
00:40:53get to see
00:40:53drivers sliding
00:40:54the cars
00:40:55anymore
00:40:55I think
00:40:55it's worth
00:40:56I think
00:40:57it's fantastic
00:40:57more
00:40:58I think
00:41:00it was
00:41:00David Coulthard
00:41:01saying
00:41:01well the fact
00:41:02is you know
00:41:02the traction
00:41:02control doesn't
00:41:03actually give
00:41:03you any more
00:41:04grit
00:41:04what happens
00:41:05is I think
00:41:05people just
00:41:06push it
00:41:06even more
00:41:07to the limit
00:41:08AC Fernando
00:41:12Alonso
00:41:13in 18th place
00:41:13he is now
00:41:14within the
00:41:15107% rule
00:41:16all of the
00:41:16drivers are
00:41:17assuming
00:41:17Michael
00:41:18Schumacher
00:41:18or someone
00:41:19else for that
00:41:20matter
00:41:20doesn't go
00:41:21out and
00:41:21lower
00:41:22the provisional
00:41:22pull time
00:41:23yet again
00:41:24Rolf off
00:41:25the pace
00:41:25they had
00:41:27hoped
00:41:27to come
00:41:28up
00:41:29today
00:41:30after
00:41:31you know
00:41:32fourth and
00:41:32fifth
00:41:33quickest
00:41:33situation
00:41:34yesterday
00:41:35Rolf in
00:41:36and out
00:41:36of fourth
00:41:36and fifth
00:41:37it was
00:41:38thought
00:41:38thought that
00:41:39he might be
00:41:40able to
00:41:40squeak onto
00:41:41the first
00:41:41two rows
00:41:42but
00:41:42I don't think
00:41:43Ralph and
00:41:43Montoya
00:41:44can't wait
00:41:44to get to
00:41:45Monza
00:41:45well exactly
00:41:46and then
00:41:47Spa
00:41:47after that
00:41:48and the
00:41:49USGP
00:41:50at Indianapolis
00:41:51where they'll
00:41:51have that
00:41:51huge straight
00:41:52to blast
00:41:53I think
00:41:53Spa
00:41:54you know
00:41:56I mean
00:41:56there's a lot
00:41:57of speed
00:41:57at Spa
00:41:58but there's
00:41:58an awful
00:41:58lot of
00:41:59handling
00:41:59required
00:42:00I think
00:42:01Monza's
00:42:01going to be
00:42:01the place
00:42:02for those
00:42:02guys
00:42:02to go
00:42:03ripping
00:42:04off into
00:42:04the distance
00:42:04again
00:42:05there's
00:42:06the Toyota
00:42:07man
00:42:07Mr. Anderson
00:42:09he's looking
00:42:11good politically
00:42:11right now
00:42:12because he's
00:42:13won his
00:42:13case
00:42:14as far as
00:42:15being able
00:42:15to test
00:42:16deep into
00:42:16the season
00:42:17if you're
00:42:18not up to
00:42:18speed on
00:42:19that folks
00:42:19the Toyota
00:42:20team as it
00:42:21prepares to
00:42:22take its
00:42:22place on
00:42:23the grid
00:42:23as the
00:42:23twelfth and
00:42:24final team
00:42:24in Formula
00:42:25One
00:42:25next year
00:42:26has said
00:42:27they're going
00:42:27to keep
00:42:27testing right
00:42:28up till
00:42:28the first
00:42:29of the year
00:42:29now there
00:42:30is a
00:42:30testing ban
00:42:31that goes
00:42:31into place
00:42:32for the
00:42:33active teams
00:42:33when the
00:42:34season ends
00:42:35and many
00:42:35of those
00:42:36teams have
00:42:36been asking
00:42:36why Toyota
00:42:37can continue
00:42:38to test
00:42:38while they
00:42:39cannot
00:42:39Eddie
00:42:40Irvine
00:42:41comes out
00:42:41it's an
00:42:42interesting
00:42:42question
00:42:43well of
00:42:43course
00:42:44Toyota's
00:42:45response to
00:42:46that is
00:42:46that well
00:42:46we haven't
00:42:47actually started
00:42:48yet
00:42:48well it's not
00:42:49until next
00:42:49year
00:42:50the teams
00:42:50are saying
00:42:51well they've
00:42:51put their
00:42:51money down
00:42:52so they're
00:42:53in the
00:42:53gang
00:42:54and I
00:42:55guess it's
00:42:55one of
00:42:55these
00:42:55interpretations
00:42:57of one of
00:42:57the millions
00:42:58of rules
00:42:58of life
00:43:00as well as
00:43:00Formula One
00:43:01it is a
00:43:02gray area
00:43:03though
00:43:03Toyota of
00:43:05course building
00:43:06their own
00:43:06engine as
00:43:07well as
00:43:07the chassis
00:43:08so they've
00:43:08got their
00:43:09hands full
00:43:10Mikasalo
00:43:11doing a lot
00:43:12of the
00:43:12testing
00:43:12and Keifeld
00:43:14begins his
00:43:15hot lap
00:43:15let's take a
00:43:16moment
00:43:16let's take a
00:43:17look at
00:43:18what happened
00:43:18to Mika
00:43:19Hakkinen a few
00:43:20moments ago
00:43:20as he made
00:43:21that final
00:43:22corner
00:43:22and watch
00:43:23for the
00:43:23streak of
00:43:23rubber on
00:43:24the racetrack
00:43:24I may be
00:43:32wrong there
00:43:33I think the
00:43:34rubber is
00:43:34already there
00:43:35he crossed
00:43:35it
00:43:35it appeared
00:43:36to come out
00:43:36the bottom
00:43:37of the
00:43:37wheel
00:43:37still a
00:43:39pretty
00:43:39spectacular
00:43:40bit of
00:43:40car control
00:43:41from the
00:43:41team
00:43:41Heidfeld
00:43:48in better
00:43:49shape by
00:43:49two-tenths
00:43:50of a second
00:43:50than Villeneuve
00:43:51was
00:43:52in that
00:43:53first
00:43:53second
00:43:53you've got
00:43:57to admire
00:43:57Peter Sauber
00:43:58for going
00:43:59his own
00:43:59way in
00:44:00Formula One
00:44:00he really
00:44:01pulled this
00:44:02team
00:44:02well basically
00:44:03he built
00:44:04it from
00:44:04scratch
00:44:04made his
00:44:05name in
00:44:05sports car
00:44:06racing
00:44:06with the
00:44:06help of
00:44:07Mercedes-Benz
00:44:07but
00:44:08it's not
00:44:10like the
00:44:10big German
00:44:11manufacturer
00:44:11pushed him
00:44:13up the ranks
00:44:13he definitely
00:44:14had to do
00:44:15the sales
00:44:15job
00:44:15had to get
00:44:16the engines
00:44:17and then he
00:44:18was in
00:44:18Formula One
00:44:19chose to
00:44:20base his
00:44:20team in
00:44:21Switzerland
00:44:21where it's
00:44:22very difficult
00:44:22to keep
00:44:23personnel
00:44:23bankers
00:44:25ours of
00:44:26course
00:44:26very
00:44:30very
00:44:30quality
00:44:32performance
00:44:33there
00:44:33although
00:44:34typical
00:44:35of him
00:44:35this year
00:44:36Sauber also
00:44:37defied his
00:44:38own main
00:44:38sponsor
00:44:39in hiring
00:44:40Kimi Raikkonen
00:44:40and was once
00:44:42again proven
00:44:42to be correct
00:44:43that's maybe
00:44:44the biggest
00:44:44good move
00:44:45that Peter
00:44:46Sauber
00:44:47has ever
00:44:47made
00:44:47he's
00:44:50Ruben's
00:44:50Barrakello
00:44:51beginning
00:44:51a hot
00:44:51lap
00:44:52Ruben's
00:44:53Barrakello
00:44:54languishing
00:44:54on that
00:44:55last run
00:44:55over a
00:44:56second
00:44:56behind
00:44:56his
00:44:57teammate
00:44:57but he's
00:44:58not had
00:44:58much luck
00:44:58with track
00:44:59at this
00:44:59afternoon
00:44:59dude
00:45:00looks like
00:45:06he's got a
00:45:06pretty clear
00:45:07track in
00:45:07front of
00:45:07him
00:45:08now
00:45:08less than
00:45:09four and a
00:45:09half minutes
00:45:10to go in
00:45:10the session
00:45:10and the track
00:45:11just may not
00:45:12support
00:45:13another quick
00:45:15time like
00:45:16Michael's
00:45:16catching up
00:45:17a car
00:45:18right in
00:45:18the worst
00:45:18possible
00:45:19place
00:45:19along the
00:45:19top of
00:45:20the hill
00:45:20here
00:45:20but this
00:45:22is when
00:45:22you really
00:45:23love driving
00:45:24you've got
00:45:25a good car
00:45:26underneath you
00:45:27and you're
00:45:27really pounding
00:45:28around
00:45:28trying for
00:45:29those last
00:45:29couple of
00:45:31hundreds of
00:45:31a second
00:45:32really
00:45:32for a turn
00:45:34beautiful job
00:45:36by Ruben's
00:45:37I don't think
00:45:37he was held
00:45:38up by that
00:45:38car
00:45:38the guy
00:45:39whoever it
00:45:40was
00:45:40saw him
00:45:43coming
00:45:43and thought
00:45:43I'm not
00:45:44going to
00:45:44get in
00:45:44the way
00:45:44of him
00:45:44again
00:45:45I better
00:45:46have
00:45:46somebody
00:45:46on my
00:45:47side
00:45:47I can
00:45:47talk to
00:45:48he's really
00:45:50driven a
00:45:51hell of
00:45:51a laugh
00:45:52here
00:45:52currently
00:45:52eight-tenths
00:45:53of a second
00:45:53off of his
00:45:54teammates
00:45:55time
00:45:55nope
00:45:57can't get
00:46:00within a
00:46:00second of
00:46:01him now
00:46:01well I think
00:46:02the track
00:46:02is slowing
00:46:03down
00:46:03he's getting
00:46:03hotter
00:46:04he was a
00:46:05little on
00:46:05the sloppy
00:46:06side
00:46:06but I mean
00:46:06it looked
00:46:07wonderful
00:46:07didn't it
00:46:08right
00:46:08the peak
00:46:08of the afternoon
00:46:09so it's
00:46:10hot
00:46:10that's
00:46:11good
00:46:12good
00:46:13good
00:46:13time
00:46:28and
00:46:28I
00:46:29could
00:46:29live
00:46:31in
00:46:31Look how much better this looks than that life we were doing there earlier.
00:47:01Knowing what Heifeld has done, of course, Raikkonen, desperate to out-qualify his teammate.
00:47:09Heifeld is 7th, Raikkonen 9th.
00:47:14And that 1.8 seconds is just about the deficit of Michael Schumacher on his previous best lap.
00:47:26That almost sounded like a short shift in the corner there.
00:47:39Yeah, he was really trying to house Heifeld from 7th.
00:47:44It didn't happen.
00:47:46Now they all pour onto the racetrack to get one more hot lap started before the checkered flag flies about 90 seconds from now.
00:47:55Here's the current order.
00:47:57Lacey in 15th on the track here on the screen.
00:48:05He really needs to pull himself off to fulfill the promise of yesterday.
00:48:10Trying to get everything off that corner and he was throwing it all away.
00:48:14Very good performance.
00:48:16That bumps Pedro De La Rosa from 11th spot.
00:48:23Does Michael Schumacher have one more in him?
00:48:25I guess not.
00:48:26He's going to decide to call this a deck.
00:48:28And he doesn't even have to get around here.
00:48:31That's the key of what Kooltog can do.
00:48:37Meanwhile, further back, Fernando Alonso and Luciano Berti continue to toss 18th place back and forth.
00:48:56David Kooltog, remember, was quickest this morning.
00:48:59This represents the last realistic challenge to Schumacher's pole.
00:49:07Michael Schumacher used 6 in his allotted 12 laps.
00:49:13Virtuoso performance.
00:49:15That's pretty impressive.
00:49:18He will be looking good if this run comes up short.
00:49:21That's pretty close though.
00:49:23That's very close.
00:49:27I'm going to find a 10th somewhere on the back side here.
00:49:34Yes, yes, I know.
00:49:37Come on, let's get back.
00:49:38There we go.
00:49:44They like to look at the curve.
00:49:49Oh, no.
00:49:50Whoa!
00:49:51Boy, did he go all that all at once.
00:49:56It looks as if Mr. Schumacher has just sewed up his 41st pole position.
00:50:03And that unassailable 65 pole positions at Aircon Center start to wonder, could it be possible?
00:50:11Checkered flag flies.
00:50:13Nine tenths of a second.
00:50:15Not enough for David Kooltog to improve.
00:50:17He remains eight tenths behind Michael Schumacher.
00:50:22And that will be Michael Schumacher's ninth pole of the year.
00:50:29He is having an exceptional year.
00:50:32Here's Hakkinen, also off the pace.
00:50:36Jarno truly has just turned a remarkably good lap and moved ahead of Hakkinen for fifth.
00:50:42Indeed he has.
00:50:43Jarno truly jumps up to fifth spot.
00:50:45Adding insult to injury for Mika Hakkinen.
00:50:48Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher basks in the glory of the moment.
00:50:52He and Ferrari at this point looking pretty much unassailable for the world championship.
00:50:57But that story is still to be told in tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:51:03That fine time by Trulli, I'm convinced, goaded a little bit by Elasi's presence on the team.
00:51:10Threatened Elasi. Looked so good.
00:51:13Well, he puts the Jordan team in an interesting situation.
00:51:16Trulli is a left foot breaker, as was Heinz Harald Frensen.
00:51:20John Elasi, however, breaks with his right foot.
00:51:22So they had to reconfigure the car to provide that third pedal.
00:51:26He also does Elasi like to use a foot actuated clutch rather than the steering wheel actuated model of the other drivers.
00:51:33So they had to bring four chassis to the racetrack in order that each driver could have a spare.
00:51:38Villeneuve finally managed to out-qualified Panis there.
00:51:41Jumped a couple of spots ahead of him.
00:51:43Elasi up to 12th.
00:51:46Irvine very disappointing, wouldn't you say, David?
00:51:48Oh, yes.
00:51:49Yeah, I mean, they were thinking they might be...
00:51:50I mean, Irvine was talking seriously yesterday about a podium finish tomorrow.
00:51:54And Fischkella very disappointing too.
00:51:56The Benadon had been so promising with a new high downforce aero package
00:52:00and a talk of a qualifying engine, it came to naught.
00:52:03And the arrow's looking very dismal down there in 20th and 21st spot.
00:52:07Bernaldi out-qualifying versus Dappen.
00:52:11That will get up the Dutchman's nose for sure.
00:52:14So qualifying is now complete, but we're not finished.
00:52:17We'll take a quick break and be right back.
00:52:19Join us.
00:52:20Welcome back live to the Hungara Ring where the flags still wave.
00:52:34Many of them.
00:52:35The Whitefield with the Blue Cross of Finland.
00:52:37That was a lot of fins making the trek to perhaps the nearest Formula One race to their home country
00:52:42to cheer for Kimi Raikkonen and Mika Hakkonen.
00:52:46Raikkonen edged by his teammate Heidfeld here by a couple of spots,
00:52:51but only two-tenths of the second.
00:52:53Once again producing a sterling performance, both the young Sauber drivers,
00:52:58who I think are probably delivering more performance per dollar than any pair of drivers on that grid.
00:53:04I'll be sure of that.
00:53:05Raikkonen can't be dissatisfied with that ninth spot considering this is his first trip to this track.
00:53:12Another one.
00:53:13Now the teams during the three-week break that has now ended were allowed 30 miles of shakedown running.
00:53:18No official testing, but you could go out and run the cars for 50 kilometers or 30 miles.
00:53:23The Sauber team chose not to do that before coming to Hungary.
00:53:27According to their technical director, Willy Ramf, they said it doesn't justify the cost to go to a racetrack
00:53:32because we'd have to travel quite some way from Switzerland to find a circuit to do that.
00:53:37Well, with teams like Ferrari and McLaren, they spend money wherever they can spend it.
00:53:43They never think of holding back.
00:53:45But at the Sauber level, you do want to maximize, or as they say in Formula One, speed, optimize.
00:53:51But, of course, this typical bureaucracy they've got there, Ziano Trulli is probably pretty happy,
00:53:58but on the other hand, he's still a second, 1.3 seconds behind the pole.
00:54:04They have this test ban, and, of course, all it means is that people like McLaren, Ferrari, BMW
00:54:10build these incredibly expensive test beds to run these things on computer simulations of every track they go to.
00:54:16So those guys actually come out looking pretty good.
00:54:19They just have to spend a lot more money that the small teams can't.
00:54:22And, of course, they did it to save money to go to testing.
00:54:24The rules were to save money, right, exactly.
00:54:25Exactly.
00:54:26It cost everybody a lot more money in the end.
00:54:27Well, some of those shakedowns provided some interesting situations.
00:54:30Ferrari example, which has their own test track, sent their test driver, Luca Badua, out to do practice starts.
00:54:35After each start, he would shut down the car. It would be towed back. He'd do it again in order to get as many practice starts as possible.
00:54:41And it's welcome to the top three qualifying drivers for the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:54:45It's Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard, and Rubens Barrichello.
00:54:48Michael, many, many congratulations to your tenth pole of the year.
00:54:51You're 3.3 seconds faster than last year's time, 0.8 of a second faster than anyone else.
00:54:56Are you surprised how quickly you've gone?
00:54:59Yes. No, I mean, we predicted certain lap times and we went much further than we thought, honestly.
00:55:07And it was down to really having a perfect lap done.
00:55:11The car was sorted out in the morning just fantastically, 100%, and it couldn't have been better, honestly.
00:55:18You only did two runs, so you only did six laps, used two sets of tyres. How important is it to save tyres for the race?
00:55:24It was not so much about saving tyres, honestly. It's simply when you feel you have done the maximum and there is nothing you can do in the car,
00:55:31nothing you can do on your own side, then you simply sit and wait. I mean, there is no point in wasting efforts.
00:55:38And that's what we've done. Just saved our energy.
00:55:41Thank you, Michael.
00:55:43David, on both your final two runs, you were faster in the first sector, but in the second sector it seems to disappear.
00:55:49Did the track go off towards the end of the session?
00:55:51No, on the third run, I ran a little bit wide with the tyre configuration that I ran.
00:55:58I picked up more undersea than I expected through the fast corner.
00:56:01I think it's turned nine out the back, so I pretty much lost that lap.
00:56:06And on the last lap, just generally not quite as tidy throughout that midsection.
00:56:12I wasn't sure if it was so much the track going off or just where I was at that time with the tyres.
00:56:18Now, your first run was lost when you came up against Heinz Howard Frensen again.
00:56:23Are you two magnetically attracted in Holofine?
00:56:25No, it's been a long time. It was Belgium last year. It was the last time we came together.
00:56:28But I think that it happens sometimes that you get traffic and one incident is, you know, you have to expect a track like this.
00:56:37But I was just a little frustrated because he went literally at cruising speed through the first corner.
00:56:42And I feel that his team should be giving him the information.
00:56:45You know, the team manager or his engineer should be able to tell him, OK, Heinz, a car's just passed the start-finish.
00:56:51You know, our team certainly do that.
00:56:53And that's what's frustrating, that other people don't have the same level of professionalism.
00:56:58Thank you, David.
00:56:59Rubens, disappointed to be third?
00:57:02In a way, yes, because I think, you know, the car felt very, very good in the morning.
00:57:07And, you know, my first run was quite good. The second run was coming even better.
00:57:12And then I had traffic.
00:57:14And since then I lost the balance of the car, basically.
00:57:18I had too much undershear out there and I couldn't set the time anymore.
00:57:22I mean, together with the fact that, you know, I think the track was a little bit dirtier and, you know, it was just a plus-plus.
00:57:29I mean, at the end, starting third in Hungary is not too bad.
00:57:34But I think the car was capable of doing better even because I was much closer to Michael all the sessions.
00:57:42Now, is your aim for tomorrow just to, between you, Michael himself, score enough points to secure the Constructors' Championship for Ferrari?
00:57:49I drive as fast as I can. If I can win the race and Michael can secure his championship, I think we're going to win both.
00:57:58Hey, Rubens. Michael, that was a very calm and collected qualifier.
00:58:02Will you be as calm for the race when a win means you're world champion again?
00:58:05Obviously, we will try, but be sure it will not be as calm as what we have seen in qualifying.
00:58:11We've seen very often this year in qualifying that we got it together, but the race was much tighter.
00:58:17So I do expect a very tight race, a very competitive race from Rubens from DC.
00:58:23So I guess the spectators are going to see a good show tomorrow.
00:58:28Anyway, we want to secure the championship, if possible, down here.
00:58:32But before we can do that, we need 10 points.
00:58:35Thank you. Now a word from Michael and Rubens, your own language.
00:58:39Before Michael lapses into German, for the record, this is Michael Schumacher's ninth poll of the year,
00:58:44not his tenth as the interlocular suggested.
00:58:47David Coulthard has two, Juan Montoya won, and Ralph Schumacher won this year.
00:58:51We'll be back to Hungary.
00:58:59Welcome back. Here's a look at the results of today's qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
00:59:03Michael Schumacher with an absolutely imperious poll position.
00:59:07His ninth of the year, 41st of his career.
00:59:10David Coulthard in second, and a remarkable performance from the Scott,
00:59:14given the lack of practice time yesterday after tearing up his car.
00:59:18Rubens Botticello, third. Ralph Schumacher, fourth.
00:59:21Yarno, truly a good performance in fifth.
00:59:23Mika Hakkinen, I'm sure, is a bit frustrated to be 1.3 seconds out in sixth.
00:59:28That Ralph Schumacher run is pretty good,
00:59:30because they really weren't expecting to do well here.
00:59:32They don't think that Williams has got the mechanical grip.
00:59:34Nick Heidfeld doing a good run there.
00:59:36Juan Montoya probably a little bit perplexed to be so far behind his teammate.
00:59:40Kimi Raikkonen, just a couple of tenths off Heidfeld,
00:59:43so nothing to be ashamed of there.
00:59:45Pedro De La Rosa out-qualifying Eddie Irvin.
00:59:47Both of them, no doubt, scratching their heads,
00:59:49wondering what the heck happened to their high downpour setup
00:59:52they thought was going to do really well here.
00:59:54Jasper Stappen in 21st place.
00:59:56I'm sure he's bitterly disappointed as well.
00:59:58And Tarso Marquez is the Red Lantern, the caboose.
01:00:02Now let's take a look, excuse me, before we get to that.
01:00:05Be sure to join us tomorrow for our race coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix,
01:00:09live here on Speed Vision.
01:00:10Pre-race coverage begins at 7.30 a.m. Eastern Time with reports from the paddock
01:00:15from Peter Windsor, including comments from both John Alasi and Heinz Harald Frensen
01:00:19regarding their switch of positions.
01:00:21That and much more.
01:00:22Now let's take a look at highlights of last year's Hungarian Grand Prix.
01:00:27At the start, the usual scramble, everybody knowing they have to get to turn one first on this track.
01:00:32Mika Hockinen managed to do it, starting from third place, getting around pole sitter Michael Schumacher.
01:00:38Mika Hockinen had a string of incredible starts last year, and that was one of them.
01:00:43First round of pit stops.
01:00:45Hockinen manages to get back on track well ahead of Michael Schumacher in second place.
01:00:50There's the Ferrari just coming into view.
01:00:54And then in the second round of stops, David Coulthard was not able to come out ahead of Schumacher
01:01:00in the battle for second place.
01:01:03There you see Johnny Herbert spinning down in that turn one, getting involved with one of the BAR cars,
01:01:08and here he is just a few laps later getting tagged by Jos Verstappen there as they go around the same corner,
01:01:14almost exactly the same spot.
01:01:16Mika Hockinen went on to win the race in his battle with Michael Schumacher for the championship.
01:01:21Tomorrow, Schumacher make clinch.
01:01:23We'll be back.
01:01:34Welcome back. Here's a look at the highlights of practice.
01:01:36Of course, the big story coming in, Heinz-Herald Frensen in the blue of the Pross team,
01:01:40while Jean Alessi in the yellow of the Jordan.
01:01:42Jean Alessi, despite this spin in the first session, would recover to finish an astonishing sixth on the day.
01:01:53Alessi back in yellow.
01:01:55David Coulthard at the infamous turn 12, which has a new curve build up on the exit of that turn.
01:02:01He would go off twice in the morning practice session there.
01:02:06A precursor of bad things to come.
01:02:09Ralph Schumacher setting fifth fastest time and promptly exceeding the bounds of traction.
01:02:14He was in good company. Virtually everybody had at least one go-round.
01:02:18Michael Schumacher cranked out a 16-9, which seemed exceptional at that time.
01:02:23But remember, that is now two and a half seconds off the pole position we just saw him set.
01:02:28And this was the dramatic moment when David Coulthard simply sheared the bottom off of his McLaren,
01:02:34doing tremendous structural damage to the car.
01:02:37He had to shoo away photographers to keep his secrets.
01:02:40Montoya ended up 13th, but he definitely pushed it to the very limit.
01:02:46And watch him dirt track off this last turn.
01:02:49Magnificent style by Juan Pablo Montoya, but to no particular effect in terms of time.
01:02:56Great fun to watch.
01:02:58Michael Schumacher was the man midway through the afternoon session.
01:03:01He set what would turn out to be the fastest time of the day.
01:03:04One 16.651 sounds pokey in light of what we know now.
01:03:12Welcome back.
01:03:13Here's a look at some of the highlights of today's Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying.
01:03:17Very much a Ferrari theme to the weekend,
01:03:19as Michael Schumacher bids to become the first back-to-back driving champions for Ferrari
01:03:25since Alberto Escari back in 1952-53.
01:03:28There you see that incident that David Coulthard was talking about with Heinz-Hild French,
01:03:33and it came all the way around turn one.
01:03:34There's David Coulthard's girlfriend looking on.
01:03:37There you see Michael Schumacher looking exceptionally smooth, as is his Ferrari.
01:03:42Schumacher's margin of eight-tenths over the opposition on this short track, David, 2.4 miles,
01:03:49is probably the most outstanding qualifying performance of the year.
01:03:53Eight-tenths in one minute, 14 seconds.
01:03:55It's quite staggering.
01:03:56On only two sets of tires, two hot laps.
01:04:01Of course, there's lots of activity that goes on on every Formula One weekend.
01:04:07The garage is a fascinating place to be.
01:04:11In a matter of minutes, things can go from quiet, even boring, dare we say,
01:04:17to absolutely frantic, especially in the closing minutes of qualifying.
01:04:22Well, Brian Redman always used to say the job with racing, he says it's 90% boredom and 10% extreme fright.
01:04:31David Coulthard, a remarkable weekend, obviously in more ways than one.
01:04:36After losing all that time in practice, coming up, putting his McLaren on the outside of the front row.
01:04:42But it's good to be Michael.
01:04:46Remember, he will clinch his fourth world championship.
01:04:48We'll have to wait until tomorrow, and we hope you'll join us then.
01:04:51We'll be back.
01:04:52We'll be back.
01:05:02Welcome back.
01:05:03Here's another look at Michael Schumacher's 41st career pole-winning lap.
01:05:10And it was just...
01:05:11It looked good, but you know, Bob, when you and I used to go to those Formula One races
01:05:15and watch Senna get those pole positions, it never looked that spectacular.
01:05:20And this one looked great, but it looked so easy.
01:05:23The amazing thing is he admitted that it was a perfect lap.
01:05:26He basically said it was a perfect lap.
01:05:28It went faster than I thought I would.
01:05:30See how much room he's got.
01:05:32He just gets the apex, only just over the curb, barely touches the curb on the exit of the corner.
01:05:39But he does run 12 pretty hard on the exit.
01:05:42And this complex there, you know, boy, that's a pretty steady old complex.
01:05:46He'll be closer to get the air good.
01:05:48And I suppose it's even the more remarkable when you place it in the context of a lap.
01:05:54The track is bumpy.
01:05:55It's very difficult.
01:05:56It's very hot.
01:05:58And slippery.
01:05:59And dirty.
01:06:01And yet he manages to lay down these tremendous feats.
01:06:04His car setup is very different than most of the other drivers up and down the pit lane.
01:06:09At the end, his time, though this Fox at 114.082 improved to 059.

01:06:27And by K&N Engineering.
01:06:30Performance begins with K&N air filters.
01:06:35Welcome back once again.
01:06:36Here's a quick look at the final results of today's qualifying.
01:06:39Well, a tremendous run by Schumacher and Kultadler.
01:06:41Eight tenths behind, as Sam has already said.
01:06:43And the rest of the field stretched out.
01:06:45Ralph Schumacher done a bad run.
01:06:46Hyde, Felton, Reichen.
01:06:47Got to be pretty happy, Sam.
01:06:48Villanue about qualifying.
01:06:50Panisse and Lacey.
01:06:51Good, I think, good start for his performance with Jordan.
01:06:55Eddie Irvine and Pedro De La Rosa must be very upset, though, down there.
01:07:00Well, no question, it's going to be an interesting first turn tomorrow.
01:07:04Not nearly as dull as Rubens-Banichella would have you believe.
01:07:07Don't forget, tomorrow we'll be back at 7.30 a.m. Eastern Time for pre-race, the race,
01:07:13and post-race coverage of the Hungarian Grand Prix, including reports from Peter Windsor.
