00:00The questions, you know, I tell you, Elmo, I've broadcast a lot of fights that you've refereed,
00:05and you're one of the finest referees in the nation, I'll say that, and around the world.
00:08And I made the misjudgment that that was a legal blow, then I saw the replay, and you were right on the money.
00:14That shot that I thought was a legal liver shot was certainly a low blow.
00:18As opposed to the last time I was interviewed with Showtime, where my ears have failed me, okay, but my eyes have failed me.
00:24No, they haven't failed you at all.
00:26But I know, Colonel, you're not going to jump my ass like that.
00:28No, I would never do that.
00:30And we'll show you, too, you'll probably like to see this as we take a look over here on our monitor.
00:34You'll see the low blow, Elmo, and, you know, it looked to me because of my positioning,
00:39but you were in proper position to see it and call it exactly right.
00:42I don't know that it should have been that damaging to him.
00:47When I saw the blow, I was surprised because I did see it a little bit on the side,
00:52and I didn't think that it was that damaging to him for him to go.
00:55But I'm going to be honest with you, he's a very, very nice young man.
00:58I don't think he's near the talent that Lacey is.
01:01I had to step into it and stop it.
01:04And here's where you do stop the fight.
01:06He catches him with that good right hand.
01:07Yeah.
01:08Well, you know, it was to a point the way he was starting to feel all of the power that Lacey had.
01:14Well, you know, sometimes referees, because the crowd, they want to see a guy like Lacey fight a little bit more.
01:20But you have a job, and the referee's main job is to protect the fighter.
01:24And it's obvious this guy is not in the class of Jeff Lacey.
01:26Without a doubt.
01:27Without a doubt.
01:28He's a nice young man.
01:29You look at his racket.
01:30He's fought most of his fights in Iowa.
01:33I don't know what kind of talent they have in Iowa.
01:36The three times he left Iowa, he was beaten outside of Iowa.
01:40So, you know, it's one of those things that, in my position as a referee and all of us as referees,
01:47we have to be mindful of those things.
01:49We have to understand what's going on in the ring.
01:52And we can't allow anybody, just because of crowd reaction, I'm not intimidated by a crowd at all,
01:58we can't allow a crowd reaction to force us to let a fight go on.
02:02Absolutely not.
02:03And any time, folks, that you see a fight in the hands of this man, Elmo Adolph,
02:06you know that you're going to get a very fair fight and the proper decisions made.
02:10And you had to correct me in tonight's fight, Elmo.
02:13That doesn't bother me at all.
02:14Any time a referee does a great job, I'm pleased.
02:16No, that's a, you know, hey, we make mistakes too, Colonel.
02:19You know, we really do.
02:21And I can't say that I've been without making mistakes myself over the years, over the 38 years.
02:28Well, you didn't make any tonight.
02:29The words of Elmo Adolph.
02:31Elmo, thanks for joining us.
02:32We're going to another fight that we're going to show you as Diego Corrales fought a little bit earlier this evening
02:37against a guy by the name of Rocky Cassiani.
02:40And we're going to show you exactly what happened in that fight and how it unfolded
02:44because Diego Corrales coming into the fight was really a terrific fighter.
02:50He had a tremendous career.
02:51And then he ran into problems, a few domestic problems, and he ended up in a situation where
02:56he was incarcerated for about a year.
02:58And he had to serve that time.
03:00And he came back, hopefully a better man.
03:02And certainly he looks to be a terrific fighter, as at one time he was a world champion.
03:08We're going to take a look at the tail of the tape, and we can tell you a few things when we see it.
03:11That Diego Corrales is a little bit of a bigger man than Rocky Cassiani.
03:17And you'll see that as the fight unfolds as we replay it for you.
03:21Diego Corrales coming into this fight with a record of 34-1.
03:25As you see the tail of the tape, you can see he's about, oh, three and a half inches taller.
03:30He's a couple of pounds lighter than his Cassiani.
03:34He's nine years younger.
03:36Remember, Corrales is only 25 years of age, and he has two inches advantage in reach.
03:42And that's something that, as you'll see, he's able to take advantage of as the fight unfolds.
03:48Corrales and Cassiani, a terrific fight coming up for you as we'll show you the replay.
03:53These were the rules under which it was contested, the 10-point must scoring system.
03:57There is a standing eight count.
03:59There is a three-knockdown rule in the state of Tennessee.
04:02He can be saved by the bell in the last round only, and only the referee can stop the fight.
04:07So we're just about set to go as we get ready to go to the Diego Corrales-Rocky Cassiani fight.
04:12This is the way I called it when we did it just a short time ago.
04:15Here it is, Corrales and Cassiani.
04:17We're in white trunks with gold trims.
04:39Weighing in 135 pounds from San Basilio, Colombia, he has a record of 21 wins, 10 defeats, 1 draw, 15 wins by knockout.
04:55And in the red corner, wearing black trunks, the gray trim, laying in at 133 pounds.
05:14From Sacramento, California, by way of Las Vegas, Nevada, he enters the ring with a record of 34 wins, 1 defeat, 28 wins by knockout.
05:29The former junior lightmate champion of the world, Diego Corrales!
05:38Corrales!
05:40Let's do this to you, I don't care.
05:43Let's go.
05:44Let me hang it, champ.
05:46We're all ready to do.
05:48We're all ready to do.
05:49Rocky, Diego, bring it in, guys.
05:53All right, gentlemen, we're doing all of these elections in the courtroom.
05:55Any questions from the blue corner?
05:56Any questions from the blue corner?
05:58All right, we're all set to go here with the first round of the scheduled 10 round.
06:28Affair in the lightweight division.
06:29Diego Corrales, decked out in the black trunks with a red trim.
06:33He's a former IBF 130-pound world champion.
06:36He had three successful title defenses at that weight.
06:39He was 33-0 with 27 knockouts and a champion at just 23 years of age
06:45before he lost that devastating loss to Floyd Mayweather when he was down five times
06:50and finally stopped in the 10th round of that fight.
06:53Rocky Cassiano, in his own right, a pretty good fighter.
06:57He's had, well, here we are right away with a low blow that starts things off here
07:02off the hands of Cassiani.
07:04And the referee, Bruce Foster, will give Diego Corrales all the time he wants
07:08and tells him he's got to keep him up.
07:10By the way, the rules here in the state of Tennessee, a little bit different.
07:15The fight is sanctioned by the Tennessee State Boxing Commission,
07:18which is in the Department of Commerce and Insurance.
07:21There is a standing eight count.
07:23There is a three knockdown rule.
07:26A fighter can be saved by the bell in the final round only,
07:29and it becomes an official fight once the fourth round starts.
07:32So he must get three complete, and then the fourth must start.
07:35And Corrales taking his time after that low blow.
07:38And Corrales seems to be all set, and Cassiani, more important, seems to be set now.
07:45So here we go.
07:45Right away, right back to it is Cassiani with good shots.
07:48You see the hand speed of the former champ, Diego Corrales,
07:52and that's the big difference in the fight.
07:54Cassiani has a pretty good record of 21-10-1 with 15 knockouts,
07:58but Corrales is 34-1 with just that one loss
08:01that I mentioned at the hands of the great Floyd Mayweather.
08:04This is his second fight back after a one-year prison sentence
08:09that he had to serve time for spousal abuse for domestic violence.
08:13And he had a fight just a couple of weeks ago on January 25th in Atlantic City
08:18in which he stopped Mike Davis in three rounds.
08:20In all honesty, we don't expect this fight to go too far either
08:23because Corrales really is a world-class fighter,
08:27and his promoter, Gary Shaw, expects him to have three or four more fights
08:30and may be ready for a world title shot before the end of the year.
08:33That's the kind of class that Diego Corrales has.
08:35Corrales is to the right of your screen with all the tattoos on him
08:38in the black trunks, and that's Rocky Cassiano in the white trunks
08:41who just took that pretty good right hand to the left side of his head.
08:44Give me a clean break. Step back. Step back.
08:47Cassiani was stopped by Ernesto Zapata a couple of years ago,
08:50and since then he's two of three wins.
08:52He went 12 good rounds in May of 2000
08:54with the now world champ Juan Manuel Marquez,
08:57the new IBF featherweight champion.
08:59So he can give you some rounds ordinarily,
09:01but Diego Corrales is a very special fighter.
09:04He's a terrific fighter.
09:07Give me a break. Give me a break. Step back. Step back. Step back.
09:10Rocky, by the way, after going down with that low blow,
09:15used only 38 seconds of the allotted five minutes
09:18that he could have taken for that low blow,
09:20so he wanted to get right back at it.
09:24Rocky wide with those left hooks.
09:26This is Corrales, a very disciplined fighter.
09:29The hands right together held high,
09:30jabs high with that left hand,
09:32puts it in the face of Cassiani,
09:34then bangs him right behind the left ear,
09:36and now he just waits for the referee,
09:37Bruce Foster of Brawley, North Carolina,
09:39to let them get back and separate the two guys.
09:42This guy knows exactly what he's doing in there.
09:44He's a consummate professional.
09:47He felt for his fight a couple of weeks ago
09:49that he's not really fine-tuned.
09:51He, as I mentioned, he got out of incarceration last June,
09:54but he had his first fight just a couple of weeks ago,
09:56and he looks pretty good right now
09:57as he's unleashing shots left and right here
10:00to the head of Cassiani,
10:01and the bell ends round number one.
10:03That's a good Diego Corrales first round.
10:08And for all the ring rust that we talked about yesterday
10:11in the conversations,
10:13he doesn't look like he's too rusty to me right now.
10:15He seems to be very sharp with his punches.
10:18The book on him is he's very aggressive.
10:20As you can see, he's a good body puncher.
10:23He has all the tools.
10:25Before the Mayweather fight,
10:26Corrales was actually as high as number five
10:28on the world pound-for-pound list.
10:30So this is a good one.
10:31And there he is.
10:34Has Kenny Adams in there with him,
10:36and Danny Smith and Andrew Riggins work the corner.
10:40Let's go to work.
10:41Number one on his head.
10:42Let him touch him.
10:43Keep touching him.
10:44Keep touching him.
10:45Let him go.
10:46Now watch the low blow.
10:52We'll see it nice and clear here.
10:54And it's right there.
10:55And you can see the immediate reaction by Rocky Cassiano.
10:59Cassiani felt that,
11:01but he only took, as I mentioned,
11:02the 38 seconds to get back up
11:04when he could have taken the full five minutes.
11:06So he wants to go.
11:07Now there seems to be a problem
11:10with either his shoulder or his elbow.
11:12Perhaps his elbow,
11:13the doctor is in the corner.
11:15And he may have hyperextended that elbow.
11:21He's not going to be able to continue.
11:22Well, I can't feel it for sure.
11:24It doesn't feel like it.
11:25It could be a bad thing.
11:25It's the doctor right there.
11:30That kind of pain.
11:31Okay, bend it one more time for him.
11:33No, no, no, no, no, he bend it.
11:34He's 18, he can't.
11:35He can't.
11:35He can't.
11:38No, he's not going to be able to continue.
11:40They have to stop the fight.
11:41He's in tremendous pain.
11:42To me, it looks like a hyperextended elbow.
11:44And the doctor, who was right in there,
11:46felt all around,
11:47and could feel the pressure points and whatnot.
11:50And just, I mean, this guy is in a lot of pain.
11:53And you can see the way he's holding it.
11:55There's just no way he can continue.
11:57So it's going to be scored as a technical knockout
11:59after one round.
12:01And we're hoping Cassiano would give him a few rounds.
12:03But that's just a sin
12:05that we couldn't get to see Diego Perales
12:08work a little bit more.
12:14We're going to take a look at the tail end of the round
12:16on the replay here
12:17and see if we see anything with that elbow.
12:20See, through the elbow,
12:21it looked like he whipped it around there,
12:22but nothing shows right now.
12:25It's the right elbow we're looking for.
12:28Does he get hit on it?
12:29No.
12:30I mean, Kerales is all over him.
12:33And just Kerales landing shots,
12:35but I can't see anything on that elbow
12:36or any sort of hyperextension.
12:40And he's holding it, you know,
12:41in kind of a strange situation right there.
12:46He backed off the rope.
12:47It's just all Diego Kerales
12:48unless he gets hit on top of it
12:49and a pinched nerve or something of that nature.
12:52There's just no way of knowing
12:53for sure what the problem is.
13:00And he just piles away
13:03and continues to throw shots at him
13:06and the possible hyperextension,
13:09a dislocation of that elbow
13:10as the cause of the stoppage of the fight.
13:14It'll be scored, as I said,
13:15a TKO at the end of the first round,
13:17and we'll get the official particulars momentarily
13:19from our ring announcer, Greg Gaston.
13:22But the fight is over,
13:23and Diego Kerales has won the fight.
13:25And as I said,
13:29it looked like some sort of hyperextension or maybe even a dislocation.
13:34Who knows?
13:35Okay, our ring announcer is standing by,
13:37and we'll get the official particulars
13:38as we go to our ring announcer, Greg Gaston.
13:41Ladies and gentlemen,
13:43Paul Giavice of the ringside position,
13:48Rocky Kassianna sustained a dislocated right elbow
13:53and could not answer the bell for the second round.
13:58The winner by technical knockout in the first round,
14:02Diego Kerales.
14:08Well, you get the story,
14:10and Diego Kerales is the TKO victory,
14:13gets the TKO victory after the first round.
14:15And again, it's kind of a sin
14:17because I would have liked to have seen him
14:18get a little bit more work.
14:19And certainly, Rocky Kassianna
14:21is the type of guy
14:22that could have given him a little bit more work,
14:24but there's just no way,
14:25as you see that elbow,
14:26that he could continue.
14:27So the doctor in attendance
14:28had to advise the referee, Bruce Foster,
14:31that the fight had to be stopped
14:33because this guy is in definite pain.
14:35And Diego Kerales,
14:36two for two since his comeback.
14:39In about three weeks,
14:40he's had two big wins.
14:41So you'll see a lot more of Diego Kerales.
14:44And again, as we talked to his promoter,
14:46Gary Shaw, yesterday,
14:48Gary said that I think that, you know,
14:50two or three more warm-up fights,
14:52although he was expecting to get some rounds
14:54out of Kassianni,
14:55who's had sort of an up-and-down career
14:56since he fought Wilfredo Vasquez
14:58for the WBA featherweight title in New York.
15:01And since then,
15:01he's been kind of on the up-and-down,
15:03up-and-down sort of career,
15:05but nothing like he was leading up to his shot
15:08against Wilfredo Vasquez
15:09for the WBA featherweight title.
15:11But nonetheless, it's all over.
15:13It's disappointing to all of us
15:14that Diego Kerales only had the opportunity
15:17to go just the one round,
15:19but it was obvious to me in the first round
15:21that Diego Kerales was not showing
15:22a lot of ring rust against Rocky Kassianni.
15:25I'm going to show you another replay
15:31that'll show you a big miss by Rocky Kassianni,
15:35and possibly he could have dislocated it then.
15:38Watch this.
15:38Kind of a windmill right there,
15:40and he missed, and he ducks down,
15:42and he doesn't show,
15:43and he is sort of grimacing in the face at this stage.
15:46He holds his hands up high,
15:48and he doesn't appear, to my recollection,
15:49that he gets hit on that elbow at all.
15:51So, I mean, of all the things that we saw,
15:54and we'll show you a different angle of that,
15:55that's about the only thing that I can possibly
15:57fathom out that he might have done
15:59and dislocated the shoulder,
16:03or rather the elbow at that particular point.
16:06But there's no question he was in severe pain
16:09because when the ring position touched
16:10above the elbow in different areas around there,
16:13you could see that he was really grimacing
16:14in serious pain.
16:16So, Rocky Kassianni isn't the type of guy
16:19that would quit.
16:20He was hurting,
16:22and as you saw,
16:23that he was practically defenseless there.
16:25So, it'll be scored again as a TKO victory
16:28for Diego Corrales as his comeback continues.
16:38And I'm Bob Shorten back here live now.
