One dead after pedestrians struck by vehicle in Wantirna South in Melbourne's east

A woman has died and two others, including a toddler, are in a critical condition after being struck by a vehicle in Melbourne's east.

00:00The aftermath of a tragic crash. Police say a woman, a man and a young boy were walking

00:08on Colman Road in Wonterna South at 12.20 this afternoon when a 91 year old driver

00:14lost control of a Toyota Yaris, mounted the footpath and struck the trio.

00:19Tragically that vehicle has collided with a couple and a child who is believed to be

00:26about three or four years of age, a young boy.

00:29The car then continued for around 200 metres, ploughing through a fence, hitting a park bench

00:34just metres from a playground.

00:36It's heartbreaking, it is. You never think it would happen, especially around your local

00:40area. So yeah, it's hard to go around.

00:43You can come down here any time of the week and you'll see people, you know, kids and

00:47that on the playground over there. It's tragedy, it really is.

00:53Emergency services rushed to the scene. The woman, believed to be in her 30s, died. The

00:57man and the boy are in hospital with life threatening injuries. The 91 year old female

01:03driver was taken to hospital as a precaution. The driver suffered some very minor injuries,

01:08but obviously terribly shaken by the incident. Police are now trying to determine exactly

01:13what happened. They don't believe this incident was intentional. They haven't ruled out the driver

01:18of the medical episode, but they hope to get more clarity when they interview her later

01:23tonight.

01:24It's an absolute tragedy. You know, unfortunately we're facing a horrific month for road trauma.

01:29We've had 14 people lose their lives in seven days. The fact that we've lost so many lives

01:34and had so many life threatening injuries over the course of the last week is completely horrific

01:39and unacceptable. Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who might have dash cam vision

01:45to come forward.
