00:00:00The dogs overachieving 10 rounds of racing with heartbreak and elation up and down the grid
00:00:05as we now arrive at the 11th race of the season.
00:00:08We're in Spielberg at the Red Bull Ring for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:00:12And this, the track just over 4.3 kilometers, situated in the bowl of the Styrian Mountains.
00:00:1810 corners for our 20 drivers to navigate.
00:00:21One of the shortest tracks on the calendar with an elevation change of over 60 meters,
00:00:26making it tough and challenging too.
00:00:29Three Dale rest zones will help with overtaking.
00:00:31And these are the tires they have to play with this weekend.
00:00:34Relly bringing the same compound as last year.
00:00:36The C5 soft, the C4 medium and the C3 hard.
00:00:40Looking like a two-stop with the mediums and hards in play with some having to run that soft tire as well.
00:00:46But beautiful surroundings to go racing in and we can see how they line up on the grid
00:00:52with a few cars out of position and right at the back.
00:00:56We will see 20 cars all on the grid.
00:00:59The last of them, unfortunately, after a tough qualifying yesterday.
00:01:03A lock-up to blame for Nika Hülkenberg in 20th.
00:01:05Carlos Sainz makes it three consecutive Q1 knockouts.
00:01:08He damaged the floor yesterday down in 19th.
00:01:11Yuki Tsunoda continues the struggle in that second Red Bull.
00:01:14Goes from 18th.
00:01:15Behind the Frenchman, Esteban Ocon.
00:01:17Lance Stroll will go from 16th.
00:01:19With Oli Behrman at 15th.
00:01:21He's the top position gainer in races so far.
00:01:23Can he add to that tally today?
00:01:25Franco Colopinto is 14th for Alpine.
00:01:27Isaac Hajar out-qualified by his teammate Liam Lawson.
00:01:30He's down in 13th with Alex Albon with his big lap in Q2.
00:01:35Compromised by the red flag.
00:01:36He missed out on the top 10 along with Fernando Alonso.
00:01:39Pierre Gasly did manage to get 10th.
00:01:41Behind Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes.
00:01:43Struggling in the high temperatures from 9th.
00:01:45And what a result for this man.
00:01:47Gabriel Bortoleto.
00:01:48His first top 10 start in Formula 1.
00:01:50And he starts alongside his mate.
00:01:52Out of position for Verstappen.
00:01:53Behind the racing balls of Liam Lawson.
00:01:55And on a standout qualifying on this grid.
00:01:585th for George Russell.
00:01:59Lewis Hamilton gets his best Grand Prix qualifying for Ferrari.
00:02:03Starting from 4th.
00:02:04The championship leader Oscar Piastri is 3rd.
00:02:07And that is your front row.
00:02:08Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari in 2nd.
00:02:11And his first pole position in Austria goes to Lando Norris.
00:02:15But it's a rather steep incline up to Turn 1.
00:02:18The first of the pinch points.
00:02:20And he'll have to do it in front of the Orange Army.
00:02:23Who aren't here to support the Papaya.
00:02:24They're here to support Max Verstappen.
00:02:26But it's the best seat in the house, Karu Chandler, for Lando Norris to be in.
00:02:30It absolutely is.
00:02:31I mean, these people have some fantastic seats in the Grand Sands.
00:02:34But Lando Norris is where he wants to be.
00:02:38It's where he wanted to be.
00:02:39It could have been in Montreal.
00:02:40But he's maximized the opportunity yesterday.
00:02:44Put himself there.
00:02:45It's a short run, Harry, to the first braking zone.
00:02:47Only 214 meters.
00:02:49To give you context, a place like Barcelona is 700 meters, for example.
00:02:53So, it's a short run for Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris from the first corner.
00:02:58But that means around the circuit, the battles tend to carry on on the opening lap all the way around to Turn 6.
00:03:06They certainly do.
00:03:07As we will get the formation lap underway.
00:03:11This track featuring 10 corners.
00:03:13But really only 7 of them really making any kind of impact.
00:03:16But 3 DRS zones, of course, Karun, as well.
00:03:18That could help some try and make those overtaking moves possible.
00:03:21Yeah, the DRS zones are worth about 7 tenths of a second per lap.
00:03:25So, there's a lot of lap time to be gained behind another car, dragging you along.
00:03:30Conversely, by following those cars from Turn 5 all the way to the final corner,
00:03:34you lose around that same 7 tenths, actually.
00:03:37So, we will see how that plays out.
00:03:40But for Lando Norris, you can see they're pushing him back a little bit.
00:03:42Look at those tire blankets off.
00:03:44Brand new set of medium tires.
00:03:46In fact, Harry, the first 9 cars on the grid are going to start the race on brand new medium tires.
00:03:53Pierre Gasly in the Alpine, he will be starting on a used set of soft tires.
00:03:58And because Alpine, Aston Martin and Racing Bulls are 3 of the teams who will use the soft tire at some stage of this Grand Prix.
00:04:08The big four, McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari have the same tire allocation,
00:04:15which is two sets of new mediums and one set of new hard tires.
00:04:18Off on the formation lap they go and it's a short lap round here.
00:04:22What have we got in store over the course of those 71 laps ahead of us?
00:04:25Let's bring in from Sky Race Control, Bernie Collins.
00:04:28Afternoon, Bernie.
00:04:29What have we got ahead of us to look out for?
00:04:31Well, good afternoon, Harry.
00:04:32Good afternoon, everyone at home.
00:04:34I think we've got a really good race on our hands here.
00:04:36Multiple stop race.
00:04:37Always a lot to look out for.
00:04:39You can see there they expect...
00:04:40Oh, sorry, Bernie.
00:04:41We've got Carlos Sainz, who hasn't been able to get away.
00:04:44Let's hear from him.
00:04:45Barry's stuck in first gear.
00:04:46Stuck in first gear.
00:04:49I can see Carlos Sainz.
00:04:50I can see him, Harry.
00:04:51He's outside our comedy box window.
00:04:53He's got just the marshals.
00:04:55The mechanics cannot touch the car.
00:04:57They've now waved the marshals off,
00:05:01but the car is still parked on the grid.
00:05:04We're obviously looking at Lando.
00:05:05He's coming around up to turn six.
00:05:07The FIA race director has now got a decision to make
00:05:10because Sainz is still stuck there,
00:05:12but there's nobody touching the car, as you can see.
00:05:15So, we're only out of time here.
00:05:18Something is stopping the car from moving forward.
00:05:21Car is stuck.
00:05:22Okay, I'm just thinking what we can do.
00:05:25Just saw the car judder forward slightly,
00:05:27but clearly not able to get underway.
00:05:30As already, where is Lando Norris?
00:05:31He's approaching turn nine now.
00:05:34We'll see him imminently popping over the crest of this little hill.
00:05:37There he is.
00:05:39And Carlos Sainz is still nowhere near to being moved.
00:05:42They're going to have to get that car into the pit lane.
00:05:44I don't understand, to be honest, why.
00:05:46There's a button which you can enable neutral,
00:05:50so the marshals can go press that, put the car into neutral.
00:05:53They're now about to start pushing him away.
00:05:58Yeah.
00:05:59There's Lando.
00:06:00They're going to have to abort the Lando.
00:06:01They're going to have to abort.
00:06:02There's still people.
00:06:03There's still people on the side of the track.
00:06:05There are mechanics running down the pit lane.
00:06:08There are mechanics still stuck on the grid.
00:06:10There's no way we can run the start.
00:06:12And there it is, a board to start.
00:06:13Ted Kravitz, what do you see?
00:06:14But they wasted 30 seconds trying to get this car started all the time around a short lap.
00:06:20And now the top cars, everybody else, apart from Carlos Sainz,
00:06:23who's going to make his way around the back, is going to sit there overheating.
00:06:26He's now going to.
00:06:27Sainz has now got going.
00:06:29I know, I know.
00:06:30So he's going to be around cooling his car, going around to the back of the car after
00:06:33he finally got.
00:06:34But they wasted 30 seconds rather than just saying, let's abandon this and push him through
00:06:38the waiting hole in the pit wall.
00:06:40Yeah.
00:06:41But as far as I know, we're going to go and we'll come to Bernie and race control.
00:06:45But Bernie, we're going to go to the 10-minute procedure here, I believe, aren't we?
00:06:48Yeah, exactly.
00:06:49Because I've called in a boarded start.
00:06:50Everyone goes to a great position.
00:06:52The mechanics can all go back to the cars, get it nice and cool.
00:06:55We go back to the 10-minute countdown.
00:06:58So it'll go back to 10 minutes.
00:07:00The grid procedure will restart.
00:07:02Carlos will go back to the grid and just let me have a look through the regulations
00:07:05and figure out if he needs to start from the pit lane, which I think is the procedure.
00:07:08Thanks, Bernie.
00:07:09What a chaotic start to the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:07:12Well, not a start to the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:07:14Carlos Sainz failing to get going.
00:07:16Cars making it way back around before all the team members are able to actually get off the grids.
00:07:21We will now go to that 10-minute procedure.
00:07:23And Carlos Sainz, here he comes now.
00:07:25He should pull over to the right here and go into the pit lane.
00:07:28Yeah, there he does.
00:07:28So he will start from the end of the pit lane.
00:07:30But on a hot day where these cars are already going to be struggling for temperature.
00:07:36And guess what?
00:07:36You know the Formula 2 race.
00:07:37We saw a few cars struggling.
00:07:39The engine's going pop.
00:07:40And this is a race which is tough on engines anyway.
00:07:44These temperatures are not going to help.
00:07:46So we're looking out of the window, Harry, at this point.
00:07:49Just watching feverish activity from the mechanics trying to get dry ice, trying to get cooling fans, trying to get any amount of cooling in those cars.
00:07:59Oh, there's fire.
00:08:00I feel like the car is still breaking.
00:08:02It's on fire.
00:08:02It's on fire.
00:08:03Carlos Sainz is Williams is on fire.
00:08:05The rear brakes going up in flames.
00:08:08The mechanics are there.
00:08:09Ted, what can you see?
00:08:10It's the right.
00:08:11It seems to be the right rear.
00:08:12I can see the smoke from the right rear coming out.
00:08:16Both.
00:08:16Both rears.
00:08:18Both, yeah.
00:08:18So he's parked himself at the end of the pit lane.
00:08:20But that's too far, Carlos.
00:08:21His mechanics are going to come out and have to extinguish the fire.
00:08:24What chaos at the beginning of this Austrian Grand Prix.
00:08:27Well, it was only a couple of years ago when Carlos Sainz was in a Ferrari here that he had to pull over and his car was in flames.
00:08:34Different scenario this time around.
00:08:36Saying that it doesn't feel like the car is braking enough.
00:08:39The team are there with him.
00:08:40The formation lap will start at 3.15 local time then.
00:08:45So we will get that 10 minutes or so to build back up.
00:08:49But smoke coming off the back of Carlos Sainz's Williams and everybody else lining up on the grid.
00:08:55Bernie, I'd love to come to you.
00:08:56Just take us through what the teams are going through here.
00:08:59The mechanics and people like that.
00:09:01Because they've had to run all the way up to the pit garages and run back down on a hot day here.
00:09:06Well, you're worried about the temperature of the cars, Corinne.
00:09:08I think the temperature of the cars will be all right.
00:09:10Because the teams will be running back with all the fans.
00:09:12The temperatures of all the mechanics out there will not be all right.
00:09:15Because they've all got their fireproofs on.
00:09:17They'll have ran back to the garage, coming back to the grid now.
00:09:20Some of them, as we see there, were still on the grid and not having made it back to the garage.
00:09:24They'll reset the cars.
00:09:25They'll be in a pretty good condition, I think, to go again.
00:09:28Obviously, the tyres have had one formation lap.
00:09:31Now they've got a selection.
00:09:32Do they keep on those tyres?
00:09:34Do they change?
00:09:35They know what decision everyone else has made now.
00:09:37So the strategists will frantically be working out.
00:09:39Is it a different set of mediums or the same set of mediums?
00:09:42I think most likely a different set.
00:09:44Because those tyres could be quite cold by the time they get wrapped up in blankets again.
00:09:48So that's one decision to be made.
00:09:50The race is now one lap shorter.
00:09:53So the race will be one lap shorter than it was if we get going after this next formation lap.
00:09:58But the teams are practicing this.
00:10:00They know what to do on an extra formation lap.
00:10:02They just do the grid from 10 minutes a game.
00:10:03Look at how at the ready they are with these fire extinguishers.
00:10:07There's big problems clearly.
00:10:08Still billowing smoke out of the exhaust at the back.
00:10:11But the countdown's on.
00:10:12So you know from Carlos and Williams' perspective.
00:10:16The formation lap is going to start with or without them in 9 minutes time.
00:10:20Or less than 9 minutes time.
00:10:21So it's knocking a bit tight.
00:10:23Because they haven't been able to go through all of these systems and procedures that Bernie was talking about.
00:10:28We see up and down the grid here.
00:10:30That the other teams are able to do.
00:10:32Wheels off some of those cars.
00:10:34Mercedes has got the wheels off for example.
00:10:36Ted you've got a bit more for us down there I believe.
00:10:39Just so much smoke.
00:10:40And that unmistakable smell of burning carbon fibre brakes.
00:10:45Once you smelt it once at a racetrack you never forget it.
00:10:48But pity the mechanics who've been just breathing all of that extinguishment and the smoke in.
00:10:53So clearly it must have been that the brakes were just on throughout that lap that Sainz did around there.
00:11:00And that would kind of tally with why he couldn't get away in the first place.
00:11:03Team Radio?
00:11:05Game over.
00:11:05Carlos.
00:11:06Drop it.
00:11:07Oh bad luck for Carlos.
00:11:08Yeah but there was never.
00:11:10I mean do you think they could have fixed it Caroon?
00:11:12No way.
00:11:13I mean there was so much smoke.
00:11:15And so much had burnt.
00:11:16That by the time they got him back to the garage.
00:11:19That was not going to be a starter.
00:11:22So 19 we have.
00:11:23Back to you.
00:11:24Thanks Ted.
00:11:25James Vals.
00:11:25Oh head in his hands.
00:11:27Carlos Sainz not even getting to start the race.
00:11:31He had a job on his hands anyway going from the back of the grid with floor damage picked up.
00:11:36Yesterday in qualifying they swapped that out for a new floor on both cars.
00:11:39Actually Albon didn't get away with that any floor damage yesterday either.
00:11:43But for Carlos Sainz where there could have been possible points rising up through the field.
00:11:48He won't even get the chance to see lights out.
00:11:50And it's such a deflating emotion for the drivers to be honest.
00:11:55I mean I had that a couple of times in my career where you know you've done all of your pre-race prep.
00:12:01You've done your warm-ups.
00:12:02You've had your fluids.
00:12:03You've done all of this stuff in the build-up.
00:12:06And then something goes wrong that just completely just it's like a massive massive balloon that's just gone pop.
00:12:14And it is a really deflating feeling.
00:12:17Not just for him of course but for the engineers and mechanics and everyone in that team.
00:12:21Just Harry one point I was just speaking of what Bernie was saying before about we've talked a lot about how hot it is and the track temperature.
00:12:28And some people might be wondering about us talking about the tyres being too cool because they've done the formation lap.
00:12:34The Formula 1 tyres operate at a certain window.
00:12:39And actually when you're going slowly around on the formation lap the temperature is just coming down.
00:12:43So what they would want is a set of tyres that's come on fresh out of the blanket that are cooked up into the operating window that you want of 80 degrees.
00:12:53And then they could go again.
00:12:55So Bernie I'll just pick up come back to you.
00:12:57So just thinking about it now I could see Mercedes for example they've had the wheels off.
00:13:03They're right outside a country box.
00:13:05A lot of the other cars have kept the wheels on.
00:13:08So just talk us through because you've got the effect of having used the tyres for one lap versus obviously the temperature as well.
00:13:16Yeah there's a lot going on with tyres in particular.
00:13:18So the effect of having gone from done the launch of the grade, done that half formation, full formation lap, very very small in terms of tyre performance.
00:13:28The bigger effect is the temperature.
00:13:30Now like you say through the formation lap the tyre temperature will start to fall.
00:13:35And that's often why we see the guys do burnouts just before they get to the grid.
00:13:38Get the surface temperature up again.
00:13:40Get the tyre nice and sticky ready for that launch of the line.
00:13:43Because if we come back to the 10 minute signal that's quite important from tyre point of view.
00:13:49At 5 minutes the tyres need to be fitted to the car.
00:13:52That's the point that the pressure is checked for Pirelli.
00:13:55So if the temperature has dropped the pressure will have dropped.
00:13:59And likely when Pirelli checks that pressure it will be too low.
00:14:03And teams would be asked because the tyre is cooler to add more air into the tyres.
00:14:08And that means that you run at too high a pressure for that first stint.
00:14:12That's very detrimental.
00:14:13Teams that haven't taken the tyres off will not be subject to the re-check of pressure.
00:14:20And I cannot tell you the temperature of the seat is maybe, I don't know, 200 degrees.
00:14:27Copy that.
00:14:30In the old days you should chuck a bucket of water down the back of the drivers just to try and cool them down.
00:14:36Can't see that happening at your old team, can we, Bernie?
00:14:39I don't think that's going to happen.
00:14:40There wasn't a lot of sympathy there either, wasn't there, that response.
00:14:42Yes, Fernando Alonso closing his eyes, mentally trying to cool himself down.
00:14:47Ted.
00:14:47I was just thinking about Fernando Alonso's fried behind.
00:14:53Ew, poor Fernando.
00:14:54Horrible.
00:14:55Right, yeah, they are all trying to stay cool.
00:14:59Lewis Hamilton's engineers, mechanics, have found some dry ice.
00:15:02He complained on the lap before, or rather the build-up before the first formation lap,
00:15:07that when they gave him a fan, it didn't have any dry ice in it, so it's just blowing hot air into his face.
00:15:13But I was just looking across the grid.
00:15:14Oh, Team Radio.
00:15:16To make sure there's plenty of waters for the mechanics, everyone's dripping.
00:15:20Oh, bless him.
00:15:21That's George all over, isn't it?
00:15:23Good man.
00:15:23Always thinking of the boys and girls in the garage.
00:15:26But, yeah, Ferrari have found some dry ice to put in the fan, so it's actually blowing out cold air now.
00:15:31Thanks, Ted.
00:15:32Yeah, the mechanics really feeling the heat.
00:15:35No escape on the start-finish straight.
00:15:38It's absolutely, I don't think there's any shade at all available.
00:15:42Well, the driver, Ian Lawson there, getting a cold blow of air into the cockpit.
00:15:47No, the both sides of the grid completely exposed to the sun, and the track temperature, 56 degrees at one point,
00:15:58is what the Pirelli engineer told me on the grid, and it's sort of settled now at about 53, so it is toasty, that's for sure.
00:16:07But, you know what, I think there's also now an element of, as we see, Jurgen Klopp here,
00:16:13visiting the Racing Bulls pit garage with Peter Beyer.
00:16:15Yeah, there's also an element of the drivers needing to just get their minds refocused,
00:16:21because they would have done their formation lab procedures,
00:16:24the adrenaline would have been building up towards the start of the actual Grand Prix,
00:16:30and they've now got to refocus, reset, have a conversation that they need to have with their engineers about this, you know,
00:16:37what was the launch like?
00:16:38Because what will happen is, Harry, they would have had now 12, 13 minutes
00:16:42to look at the data of the star, of that formation lab star, and they'll get feedback, right,
00:16:50this is how quickly you release the clutch, this is how much, you know, in terms of the clutch position,
00:16:55we need to adjust, because they can do that electronically.
00:16:57So they'll get feedback from their performance engineers, and they can then have another go at it.
00:17:04But, I'll tell you what, these spectators are going to be toasty, aren't they?
00:17:08By the time we finish the Grand Prix in two hours' time.
00:17:10I would think so.
00:17:10I hope they've got the sun cream out and ready.
00:17:13That grandstand's absolutely packed here, expecting them to be packed out next week as well,
00:17:18at the British Grand Prix, of course, we're going to swap the Orange Army for the papaya of McLaren
00:17:24in the Lando stand at Stowe, which is going to be an awesome atmosphere,
00:17:27and I think it'll be an amazing atmosphere across the weekend, as it has been here,
00:17:32and the fans, and we all are, eagerly awaiting, well, the second formation lab,
00:17:37which you can see, less than a minute and a half away now.
00:17:39You mentioned the drivers are going to be in sort of constant communication,
00:17:42back and forth with their engineers about what's happened in the last formation lab,
00:17:45but is there also a moment where you just want a bit of hush,
00:17:48and to get back in that zone and refocus?
00:17:50I always found the formation lab to be really useful for that,
00:17:54because there's a lot of stuff going on in the grade.
00:17:57There's a lot of people talking to you, there's engineers,
00:18:00there's people shoving microphones in your face,
00:18:03there are sponsors, there are people around, you know, there's a lot going on.
00:18:07And that formation lab, as a driver, as an individual athlete behind the wheel of the car,
00:18:14allows you to go into that mental space,
00:18:17and, you know, you still have to obviously go through, as Bernie was saying,
00:18:20the burnout procedures and things like that, you know, practice start,
00:18:24but it really helps you focus the mind for the Grand Prix.
00:18:29Well, cars being lowered down from the jacks then,
00:18:31and we'll get this formation lab back underway.
00:18:34Now down to 19 cars after Carlos Sainz with his car initially not being able to get away on that formation.
00:18:43That did make it back round, made it back to the pits,
00:18:46and then fire from the rear brake.
00:18:48Sainz now out of this one with a DLS to his name,
00:18:52leaving us with 19 cars on the grid.
00:18:56And because we're having a second formation lab,
00:18:58we have now taken a lap off the total amount we will do around this Red Bull ring
00:19:03to 70 laps of racing.
00:19:06Formation lap then underway once more.
00:19:08Lando Norris leads them up the hill,
00:19:11214 metres from pole position to that breaking point of Turn 1,
00:19:16the first of those pinch points here.
00:19:18Charles Leclerc will be alongside him, looking for a clean start.
00:19:21If you remember last year, he found himself in the wars,
00:19:24had to come in for a front wing change.
00:19:27Ferrari hoping he gets a clean start,
00:19:29and that beginning is going to be so important.
00:19:31We've got another slow car off the grid.
00:19:32It's the Sauber of Nico Hülkenberg,
00:19:35but he's able to get himself away again.
00:19:38He'll be last on the grid anyway.
00:19:40Yeah, in case you were wondering why they were going slowly at that point,
00:19:42it's because they all have a speed limit that they have to adhere to
00:19:45until they cross the front row of the timing line of the front grid.
00:19:50So, Lando Norris leading the pack around
00:19:53as we head into that middle sector of lap.
00:19:56This is the part of the lap where, if he is still in front,
00:20:01or even for everyone else, if the battles carry on,
00:20:05this is where it starts to settle, you know, Turn 6.
00:20:08But until Turn 6 on the opening lap, it is generally pretty frenetic.
00:20:12And we saw it in the Formula 2 race.
00:20:14We've seen it in the Formula 3 race already this weekend.
00:20:16So, yeah, watch out for that.
00:20:19Whatever happens just up into Turn 3,
00:20:21it doesn't mean things are settled.
00:20:23You can't relax, unlike at a lot of other circuits.
00:20:26Here we go, then.
00:20:27Take 2, almost underway for the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:20:31Lando Norris up and over the hill at Turn 9.
00:20:34Ten corners around this just over 4.3-kilometre track.
00:20:38We'll have 70 laps of racing ahead of us.
00:20:42Rebecca Lee up in the pit gantry will be starting the race
00:20:47and pressing the button for the lights to go out once more.
00:20:52Lando Norris already on the grid.
00:20:54Charles Leclerc will be alongside us.
00:20:55Piastri and Hamilton, the top four.
00:20:58The Ferraris with an upgrade this weekend seeming to pay dividends.
00:21:02It's not day and night, but it's moving in the right direction.
00:21:05A bit of luck coming their way as well in yesterday's qualifying to help them up the order.
00:21:11George Russell and the Mercedes in the top five.
00:21:13The Mercedes really feeling the heat, quite literally struggling a tad in these high temperatures.
00:21:19Max Verstappen starting out of position.
00:21:21Look out for the Red Bull down in seventh.
00:21:24Looking to displace Liam Lawson with his second best qualifying of his career up inside the top six.
00:21:30Gabriel Bortoletto in the Sauber will be eighth.
00:21:33Head of Kimi Antonelli and Pierre Gasly.
00:21:34That is your top ten to watch out for going through Turn 1.
00:21:39Three DRS zones as well after the first lap.
00:21:42I think it could be quite entertaining.
00:21:45Just look at Leclerc.
00:21:46He's parked his car slightly pointing to the left-hand side.
00:21:50The left, where the two McLarens are, that is the clean side of the grid.
00:21:53The two Ferraris on the dirty side of the grid.
00:21:55Here we go, Harry.
00:21:5619 cars on the grid.
00:21:57No Carlos signs.
00:21:58It's Hulkenberg at the back.
00:22:00But on the front row, it's the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.
00:22:02The McLaren of Lando Norris.
00:22:04It's all eyes to the lights.
00:22:05And foot to the floor as we go racing in Austria.
00:22:09And it's a good start for Lando Norris.
00:22:11Immediately coming over to the inside.
00:22:13And balks up Leclerc.
00:22:14Who then is taken round the outside by Piastri.
00:22:18The McLarens lead out of Turn 1.
00:22:19Heading towards uphill.
00:22:21Turn 3.
00:22:22George Russell in the Mercedes.
00:22:23Also under pressure now.
00:22:24But Piastri.
00:22:25Can he ever go on his teammate?
00:22:27Norris defends up the hill.
00:22:29Into the right-hand.
00:22:30Lock up from George Russell.
00:22:31He hits Max Verstappen.
00:22:33Out of the race for George Russell.
00:22:35No, it's Antonelli, Harry.
00:22:37Antonelli.
00:22:37Antonelli.
00:22:37It's Antonelli who's locked up.
00:22:39There's Russell.
00:22:40Alongside his old teammate Lewis Hamilton.
00:22:43And out in front though.
00:22:44Lando Norris holding on to the lead.
00:22:47Yeah, it was Antonelli and Verstappen out of the Grand Prix.
00:22:50Already Piastri.
00:22:52Tried to have a go around the outside.
00:22:53Backed out of it smartly.
00:22:55But look at this.
00:22:56George Russell versus Lewis Hamilton at Turn 6.
00:22:58Russell having a little sniff.
00:22:59But Hamilton covers him off.
00:23:02It was Antonelli who just locked up there.
00:23:04The safety car.
00:23:06Unsurprisingly.
00:23:06Has been deployed.
00:23:08So really bad news for Max Verstappen.
00:23:12And that enormous Dutch grandstand.
00:23:14On the inside of Turn 6.
00:23:16They didn't even get to see his hero come past at racing speed once today.
00:23:21First retirement of the season.
00:23:24For Max Verstappen.
00:23:26A five-time winner here.
00:23:27And you can see the damage that's been caused.
00:23:30Kimi Antonelli was the Mercedes locking up.
00:23:33And the damage to the front left.
00:23:35We see this happen on lap one of the Red Bull ring.
00:23:38But to take out really the home driver as the Red Bull is hoisted up rather aggressively there.
00:23:45Straight away though Verstappen waving to the fans.
00:23:48But that is it.
00:23:49Verstappen out of the race.
00:23:50Kimi Antonelli out of the race.
00:23:53Carlos Sainz never got to start the race.
00:23:55Lando Norris holding on to the lead.
00:23:57Piastri with a superb start.
00:23:59As those two come together to have a little debrief.
00:24:01I wonder if he's apologising a little bit there, Kimi.
00:24:06Because he was on the inside, the dirty part of the track there.
00:24:10And yeah, I mean in that whole melee.
00:24:13You know, Gasly's up four places.
00:24:15Albon's up five places in that whole mess.
00:24:19Yes, we'll see when the replays come out, Harry.
00:24:22Just how that all unfolded.
00:24:23Obviously, Kimi Antonelli was starting further down compared to the other Mercedes.
00:24:29Down in ninth.
00:24:31Right behind Verstappen who was seventh on the grid.
00:24:34So they would have been running together.
00:24:35Here we go.
00:24:35Here's the replay at the start.
00:24:36Now, Antonelli and Verstappen on the left-hand side of the grid there.
00:24:43Antonelli doesn't get a great getaway.
00:24:44He gets overtaken as the Charles Leclerc goes further up at the front.
00:24:50Now we'll see the run to turn three.
00:24:52Looking back from Lando Norris.
00:24:54Decent launch.
00:24:55And actually the top three got a pretty good launch.
00:24:57But Norris chose to cover off the inside there with Leclerc.
00:25:01And that opened up the door for Piastri to come around the outside.
00:25:05Oscar's now got the slipstream.
00:25:06He's got a great toe.
00:25:07So look to the left of your screen.
00:25:09That is Oscar having a go around Norris.
00:25:11Norris covered it off nicely.
00:25:13Further back, Antonelli completely there in a lunge.
00:25:17And Lawson getting caught up in that melee as well as Bartoletto.
00:25:21Those two lucky to carry on.
00:25:23On board with Max Verstappen.
00:25:24So he's on the outside.
00:25:26Mining zone business on the outside of Lewis Hamilton there.
00:25:29And whack gets the big hit from Mercedes.
00:25:33I got hit like crazy.
00:25:36It's the end of a 31 race point streak for Max Verstappen.
00:25:43Here we are on board with Kimi Antonelli.
00:25:44He knows already.
00:25:45He's got caught out.
00:25:46He's got caught out by how early they've slowed down for that corner.
00:25:51Then he's gone.
00:25:51Oh, there's a gap.
00:25:53Sorry about that.
00:25:55Locked the rear.
00:25:56Sorry.
00:25:59Yeah, he's...
00:26:00Watch, Kimi.
00:26:00He's further back there.
00:26:02Bartoletto and Lawson in front.
00:26:04He suddenly realized they're stopping earlier than he expected.
00:26:06And just way too much speed.
00:26:09Locked up.
00:26:10And, yeah.
00:26:12Would you put it down as a rookie error?
00:26:14I mean, it's his first time.
00:26:15He's driven a lot of laps on this track.
00:26:17First time in a racing situation.
00:26:20But I'm not sure Max Verstappen will take that as any consolation.
00:26:26Well, both cars now clear of the track.
00:26:28You can see the safety car ending.
00:26:30We've lost three cars now.
00:26:31Carlos Sainz didn't even start the race.
00:26:33Kimi Antonelli colliding into the back of Max Verstappen, who is now out.
00:26:39Verstappen's last two retirements on the first lap have been when he was hit by a Mercedes.
00:26:43If you think back to the British Grand Prix in 2021, and now again with Kimi Antonelli at the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix.
00:26:52But Lando Norris did what he needed to do at the start.
00:26:54Did feel a bit of pressure from Oscar Piastri.
00:26:57Perhaps a slight reprieve when the safety car came out.
00:26:59Charles Leclerc being halted going into Turn 1 by Lando Norris.
00:27:05Russell was applying the pressure to Hamilton.
00:27:07Gasly's made good gains as we are back underway with the green flag.
00:27:10And Lando Norris is pushing around Turn 9.
00:27:13And we go, this Austrian Grand Prix back underway.
00:27:16Norris, Piastri, Leclerc, Hamilton, and Russell, your top five.
00:27:20Piastri's got the start he wanted, didn't he?
00:27:21We were talking about it before the race.
00:27:23He needed to clear Leclerc as quickly as possible to give him a chance of winning this race.
00:27:27And he's done it at Turn 1.
00:27:29This should be a fantastic battle up at the front.
00:27:32So in the midfield pack now, Bortoleto's hung on to that eighth place.
00:27:36Still running in the points.
00:27:38Liam Lawson, despite getting somewhat caught up in that melee, in ninth.
00:27:42We haven't seen if there's any damage.
00:27:44We've got Loro Mekis on the pit wall with us this afternoon.
00:27:47We can ask him later.
00:27:48There's a little battle further down, Harry.
00:27:50We've got the Haas against the Alpi.
00:27:52That looked like Oli Behrman having a go there.
00:27:55Behrman down in 12th.
00:27:56Colopinto up in 11th.
00:27:57And here we go, though.
00:27:58This is the sole remaining Mercedes of George Russell.
00:28:00trying it down the inside of Hamilton, squeezing him.
00:28:04Hamilton holding on to fourth place.
00:28:06But Russell's going to try and sweep around the outside.
00:28:08No, can't do it there.
00:28:10We'll have to try another way.
00:28:12But Russell is feeling fast in these early stages
00:28:15as Hamilton's actually dropped back slightly
00:28:16while defending against Russell from his teammate Leclerc up front.
00:28:21Good start from Gasly as well.
00:28:22He's up to sixth ahead of Albon.
00:28:24Bortoleto, as you mentioned, Karun doing well.
00:28:25Lawson and Alonso sneaking into that top ten.
00:28:30Yeah, this is a replay of down three.
00:28:32This was the half, I think.
00:28:33Yeah, this was Colin Behrman.
00:28:35And Colin Behrman.
00:28:35And Colin Behrman.
00:28:35And Colin Behrman.
00:28:36And Colin Behrman actually has risen up to 11th spot
00:28:39and just forcing Behrman around the long way.
00:28:42Behrman's still behind.
00:28:44DRS will be enabled now as George Russell pops the rear wing open
00:28:47as does Lewis Hamilton, as does Charles Leclerc in front of him.
00:28:51So up at the front, Oscar Piastri's kept the gap under a second
00:28:55despite his teammate.
00:28:58Displode the door and break it.
00:29:01That's what George Russell has to say about that move.
00:29:04Piastri has DRS on Lando Norris.
00:29:07Will he try anything down the inside as Max Verstappen makes his way
00:29:10back to the paddock out of this race on home turf.
00:29:14Kimi Antonelli also walking back after such a high in Canada.
00:29:19Getting that podium now won't even score points.
00:29:22Here we go then, back up front.
00:29:24So Piastri did have DRS, got close, but obviously didn't make the move.
00:29:27No, you know, there's a gap sitting at about six tenths of a second.
00:29:31So this track is a contrast of two halves in the race.
00:29:36From turns one to four, being in the slipstream, being in the DRS,
00:29:40is of a massive benefit.
00:29:41Look, Piastri comes out of the last corner nine tenths behind,
00:29:44so that keeps him just within DRS.
00:29:47He'll pick up the benefit now on these next three straights.
00:29:50But then from turn four to turn ten, it's a negative.
00:29:53You're overheating the tyres, you're cooking the tyres,
00:29:56especially the front through those long left-hand corners
00:29:59in the middle part of the lap.
00:30:00So it's a balance set.
00:30:02Just a quick one on Antonelli.
00:30:03I fear he's going to end up with a grip penalty.
00:30:06The stewards will investigate after the race.
00:30:08I fear he's going to carry a grip penalty
00:30:10when we get to Silverstone next weekend.
00:30:12Yeah, that is under investigation.
00:30:14And closing down the inside.
00:30:15And Oscar Piastri has another look into turn four.
00:30:18Norris sees him coming.
00:30:20The two McLarens fighting early doors here at the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:30:25They collided last time out in Canada,
00:30:27but this is proper wheel-to-wheel racing this time.
00:30:30And Oscar knows he needs to have a go soon
00:30:33before his front tyres cook, as I was just saying before.
00:30:36So he was a long way behind at that stage.
00:30:40I don't think that was a really serious attempt.
00:30:43But what is serious is he's shown Lando his intent.
00:30:46He's shown, I'll tell you what, mate,
00:30:48you can't just take this at your own pace here.
00:30:51I am going to be sniffing.
00:30:53And this is forcing Lando, perhaps, to run at a quicker pace.
00:30:57Look, they've already pulled 2.8 seconds over Charles Leclerc.
00:31:02Fastest lap as well last time around for Oscar Piastri.
00:31:04That's 7 tenths between them.
00:31:05That's around the delta advantage DRS gives you,
00:31:08that drag reduction system.
00:31:10But you need to try, if you're going to make a move,
00:31:12get it done before turn four,
00:31:14because then you get stuck behind the car in front,
00:31:16coming through the fast turn six and seven,
00:31:19trapped in that dirty air.
00:31:20Yeah, Oscar went a bit deep at turn three.
00:31:22Didn't get a good exit out of that corner,
00:31:24and that's given Lando a little bit of breathing space.
00:31:28Do a call on the racing situation.
00:31:30That's a clear instruction.
00:31:31You're free to race.
00:31:32You see how you want to play it, Oscar.
00:31:34And that's great.
00:31:35And hats off to McLaren.
00:31:37They're letting these drivers, you know, have a go and fight,
00:31:41and that's what we want as neutral spectators watching on.
00:31:45So the incident involving Colopinto and Behrman,
00:31:47we saw a little earlier, it's been noted.
00:31:49Behrman now ahead of Colopinto,
00:31:51just on the fringes of the points,
00:31:54which is currently occupied by Fernando Alonso
00:31:56in that top ten position,
00:31:58as we embark on another lap, eight of 70.
00:32:02Oscar again within DRS, again,
00:32:04nine tenths of a second across the line,
00:32:06so he'll get that benefit.
00:32:08Watch the wing pop open now
00:32:10as he goes over that line.
00:32:12The reason, Harry,
00:32:13that he wants to get past is twofold.
00:32:16One is, as I mentioned,
00:32:17he doesn't want to overcook his front tyres,
00:32:18but he also wants to get ahead in the first stint
00:32:20because I suspect, as most teams play it,
00:32:24McLaren will give the lead car priority
00:32:26when it comes to strategy.
00:32:28And if Norris is allowed to pit first
00:32:30at every pit stop,
00:32:32he's going to pick up a big benefit
00:32:34in terms of track position.
00:32:35So Oscar wants to try and get this done quickly
00:32:38so he could be in that position, of course.
00:32:41And he'll be wanting that clean air desperately as well.
00:32:44We know the McLarens and their strong advantage
00:32:45of keeping their tyres in shape better than the rest,
00:32:48but even in this extreme heat,
00:32:50we've got track temperature at the moment,
00:32:5150.4 degrees, air temperature 30.6 degrees.
00:32:55It's the hottest it's been all weekend long.
00:32:58The longer Piastri spends behind his teammate Norris
00:33:01in that dirty, turbulent air,
00:33:03the longer the advantage goes for Lando Norris,
00:33:06who will have the cleaner air in front of him.
00:33:08But at a track like this,
00:33:10one of the shortest on the calendar,
00:33:12you very quickly come across some lapped traffic,
00:33:14which could also play a factor
00:33:16a little later on in the race.
00:33:17So the field has spread out a bit, hasn't it?
00:33:19Behind, you know, Leclerc 3.3,
00:33:22behind Piastri now.
00:33:23Hamilton's dropped back.
00:33:24Russell, Gasly, all spread back.
00:33:27But Gasly on those soft tyres
00:33:29will start to run into trouble.
00:33:32And Bernie, maybe we'll come to you here,
00:33:34because Gasly on those soft tyres,
00:33:36he's got four cars behind him
00:33:38on the mediums,
00:33:39and he's a little bit of a stop in the bottle, isn't he?
00:33:42Yes, definitely, Corinne.
00:33:44You know, Gasly will start to see degradation
00:33:46on those soft tyres much earlier than the medium runners.
00:33:49And to that point, we've already seen Hajar
00:33:51hit off the soft tyres as he started the race on
00:33:54and put on mediums.
00:33:55I was trying to see if there was any damage there
00:33:56that caused that.
00:33:57He had dropped back through the field.
00:33:59But then I think it was just an opportunity
00:34:01to give the soft a go at the start,
00:34:03but then when it didn't work,
00:34:04get on in the mediums
00:34:05that you think are going to be much, much more consistent.
00:34:08And he may begin, like you say, Gasly,
00:34:11may begin to come to car up in that bottle.
00:34:13But Albon, two positions ahead of him,
00:34:15also appears to be managing quite a lot as well.
00:34:17One position ahead.
00:34:18Thanks, Cody.
00:34:18I think we're about to see those tyres
00:34:20starting to give up for Pierre Gasly
00:34:22as no longer the cork in the bottle.
00:34:24Alex Albon has found a way through on Gasly
00:34:27just a few moments ago.
00:34:29So Albon now up into sixth spot in the Williams.
00:34:32Gasly now down to seventh.
00:34:33And he's got Bortoleto all over the back of him
00:34:36and closing in the Sauber
00:34:37as the battle up front continues.
00:34:40Piastri, four tenths of a second away once again
00:34:43with the benefit of DRS making their way downhill
00:34:47towards turn four.
00:34:49The rear wing flies open.
00:34:50Will he try a late dive down the inside?
00:34:53Norris moves to the middle to defend.
00:34:55That's going to compromise him slightly on the exit.
00:34:57Can Piastri get a better run out of the corner?
00:35:00But now it's very difficult to make an overtake here
00:35:03through the left-hander of turn six.
00:35:05Line astern, much tighter for Piastri.
00:35:07Yeah, he's choosing a tighter line there
00:35:10to just get a bit of clear air onto his front wing.
00:35:13He is not letting Lando Norris relax.
00:35:16I mean, we've talked about this weekend.
00:35:18Lando having the upper hand
00:35:19throughout free practice,
00:35:20throughout qualifying.
00:35:22But Oscar and Andrea Stella was telling us
00:35:25before the race, Harry, wasn't he,
00:35:26that Oscar's someone who builds up
00:35:29and he's just piling on the pressure.
00:35:32Piling on the pressure.
00:35:33And only half a second between them across the line
00:35:35to watch this.
00:35:36Watch this.
00:35:37Oh, I think Norris ran a little bit deep there.
00:35:39And we've seen on previous laps
00:35:40when it was 9 tenths, he couldn't get past.
00:35:43Watch this, Harry.
00:35:43Here comes Oscar Piastri.
00:35:45Lando Norris moves to the inside.
00:35:46Side by side for the two McLarens.
00:35:48Piastri through.
00:35:50Norris will try and fight back
00:35:51and get the undercut.
00:35:52Can he get on the throttle earlier?
00:35:54It's line of turn for the two McLarens.
00:35:57Now Norris will get the DRS
00:35:59and blasts back past Piastri.
00:36:01But Piastri keeps his foot in it.
00:36:03Who's going to break later?
00:36:05Lock up from Piastri.
00:36:07Norris back through and into the lead.
00:36:10What racing in these early stages.
00:36:12Piastri coming back.
00:36:13He's going for it.
00:36:14Down the inside.
00:36:15Not at turn 6, surely.
00:36:17For Oscar Piastri.
00:36:19No.
00:36:19Tried it, though.
00:36:20But these two, having a brilliant battle
00:36:23as Norris just a little bit twitchy on the exit.
00:36:26But lives to fight another day.
00:36:28But before you know it,
00:36:29we're going to have another DRS zone
00:36:30in a couple of corners.
00:36:32Zac Brown is in here this weekend.
00:36:33I'd love to see what his heart rate is like
00:36:36watching back wherever he is on television.
00:36:38across the line.
00:36:407 tenths between them.
00:36:41So Piastri is still going to be close enough,
00:36:44I think, if he gets a good run out of one
00:36:47and then again out of three.
00:36:50Here we go, then.
00:36:51Andrea Stella watching nervously on the pit wall.
00:36:54Lando Norris missed out on FP1.
00:36:56And since FP2, he has topped every session.
00:36:58But Oscar Piastri has been there or thereabouts,
00:37:01but normally a little bit behind his teammate.
00:37:03But is so good at building incrementally
00:37:06throughout a weekend,
00:37:07showing why right now
00:37:09he is leading this championship.
00:37:11But it is far from over yet.
00:37:13The two McLarens being allowed to race.
00:37:16We love to see it.
00:37:17And after pushing hard on that last lap,
00:37:19I wonder if he just needs
00:37:20to cool down on this lap.
00:37:22Still within half a second.
00:37:23And Rego again next time around.
00:37:25Yep, this is riding on board with Gabriel Portoleto.
00:37:28He's alongside Pierre Gasly down into turn four.
00:37:32Great move.
00:37:32Locking up slightly the inside front.
00:37:35Gasly still hanging on around the outside.
00:37:38As they head down to turn six.
00:37:40But Portoleto's got the inside line.
00:37:42He's got to just calm the car down,
00:37:44get it slow.
00:37:45And he does beautifully well there.
00:37:47Rookie driver, of course,
00:37:49and qualified into the top ten
00:37:51for the first time in his career.
00:37:53Running strongly in seven.
00:37:54Yep, Gasly losing a couple of positions
00:37:56in the last couple of laps.
00:37:57Trying to eke out life
00:37:59on those soft tyres.
00:38:00Now down to eight.
00:38:01Liam Lawson, though,
00:38:02will be the next driver
00:38:02to have a pop at the Frenchman
00:38:04ahead of him.
00:38:05Fernando Alonso holds on
00:38:07to that final point score
00:38:08at the moment
00:38:09as Gasly finally calls it quits
00:38:11and comes into the pits
00:38:12to relieve himself
00:38:13of those soft tyres.
00:38:14So too, Niko Holcombog
00:38:15from the back
00:38:16also coming in to the pits.
00:38:19Back with the DRS
00:38:20for Oscar Piastri.
00:38:22There's a bit of a ban
00:38:23coming on the front right tyre,
00:38:25you can see,
00:38:26of Oscar Piastri's McLeod.
00:38:28And that's what I was saying
00:38:29before, that's the race
00:38:29as Gasly finally pitch
00:38:31to get rid of those soft tyres
00:38:33on lap 13.
00:38:34Bernie.
00:38:35Yes, I was just going to pick up
00:38:37on that McLaren here.
00:38:38It's that back and forth
00:38:39that we see between
00:38:39Norris and Piastri.
00:38:40They are doing something
00:38:41very different
00:38:42to the Ferraris
00:38:43and Russell behind
00:38:44in particular.
00:38:45They're all talking
00:38:45about management.
00:38:47Management through turn nine,
00:38:48management in the high speed.
00:38:50And the two McLarens
00:38:50are battling right.
00:38:51And we've talked all year
00:38:53about their temperature management,
00:38:54how they can keep it cool.
00:38:56And that is playing out here
00:38:57where they're just
00:38:57letting them fight it out.
00:38:58is that.
00:39:00And thank you, McLaren.
00:39:01Thank you, McLaren.
00:39:02Is that what is making
00:39:03the difference right now
00:39:05in the heat of Austria
00:39:07that the McLarens
00:39:08can do battle
00:39:09while the two Ferraris
00:39:11declare 4.7 seconds back.
00:39:14Management in this early
00:39:16part of the race
00:39:16as Albon comes in
00:39:17to the pits
00:39:18from the top six
00:39:19to get rid of
00:39:20his medium tyres.
00:39:22Yeah, Piastri's engineer
00:39:23Tom Stelda
00:39:24has been on
00:39:24to him saying
00:39:25the gearbox temperature
00:39:26is getting a little bit hot
00:39:27by following Lando.
00:39:29But stick with the DRS
00:39:30is helping.
00:39:31So once again,
00:39:33Piastri having a little snip.
00:39:34What he'll need to do
00:39:35is occasionally
00:39:36balance it off
00:39:38by pulling out
00:39:40of the slipstream,
00:39:41pulling out of the benefit
00:39:42he would get
00:39:43from the slipstream
00:39:43by trying to get
00:39:44some clean air
00:39:45into his car
00:39:47to just try and bring
00:39:48the temperature down.
00:39:49But as a racing driver
00:39:51versus Twiki to do,
00:39:53Oli Behrman
00:39:53having a look
00:39:54around the outside here.
00:39:55This was a little earlier.
00:39:56Oh, no, it wasn't actually.
00:39:58I think this is
00:39:58most recently.
00:39:59The incident between
00:40:00Behrman and Colopinto
00:40:01was noted
00:40:02that's not being investigated
00:40:03any further.
00:40:04And then against the other
00:40:05Alpine of Pierre Gasly,
00:40:08Oli Behrman
00:40:08making his way up the order
00:40:10that he has since
00:40:11come into the pits.
00:40:12Watch this, watch this,
00:40:13there we go.
00:40:13Piastri moves to the inside.
00:40:15He's waiting.
00:40:16He's waiting.
00:40:16Sorry, Harry.
00:40:17He's being smart here.
00:40:18He's thinking.
00:40:18Turn one isn't the place
00:40:19I want to do it.
00:40:20Let's wait.
00:40:21Pop the wing open.
00:40:22He is incredibly close.
00:40:24But in the dirty air,
00:40:25even through turn one,
00:40:27he's lost a little bit of ground.
00:40:28Norris had a slightly better exit.
00:40:30We'll move to the inside.
00:40:32Just drifts left again.
00:40:34All about the exit
00:40:35then out of three
00:40:36as we run downhill
00:40:37towards four.
00:40:38There's the DRS line
00:40:39for Oscar Piastri.
00:40:40The rear wing
00:40:41flies open.
00:40:427 tenths of an advantage
00:40:44over his teammate.
00:40:45Norris will defend
00:40:46going downhill.
00:40:47Can Piastri find any way through?
00:40:49No.
00:40:49Has to just sit and focus.
00:40:51But again,
00:40:52a tighter line
00:40:53for Oscar Piastri.
00:40:55Let's see what he does
00:40:56coming through
00:40:56the left-hander
00:40:57of turn six.
00:40:58So much tighter
00:40:59to the apex
00:41:00than Lando Norris.
00:41:01But cannot make a way
00:41:03through there.
00:41:04We'll have to buy this time
00:41:05once more.
00:41:06But as the more laps
00:41:07go by,
00:41:08the more degradation
00:41:10Oscar Piastri
00:41:11will be feeling.
00:41:13Norris will be getting it too,
00:41:14but will be benefiting
00:41:15from having that clean air.
00:41:17But we have found that
00:41:18we now have had
00:41:19a fair few pit stoppers
00:41:20so we could well see
00:41:21some lap traffic
00:41:22come into the equation.
00:41:24So Piastri
00:41:25still within a DRS.
00:41:26Yeah, I mean,
00:41:27just looking at it here,
00:41:29it's that sort of
00:41:30six, seven tenths,
00:41:31isn't it?
00:41:32The gap that he's coming
00:41:33over the line.
00:41:35And Norris so far
00:41:36hasn't put a foot wrong.
00:41:37We haven't seen a lock-up.
00:41:38We haven't seen him
00:41:39go wide,
00:41:41you know,
00:41:42at the critical points
00:41:43of turns one or three.
00:41:45And that's how
00:41:46he's just able
00:41:47to soak up
00:41:49the pressure
00:41:50and deal with it.
00:41:50But once again,
00:41:51down to turn three,
00:41:52half a second the gap
00:41:53as he exited
00:41:54that right-hander
00:41:56at the top of the hill.
00:41:57Not quite enough.
00:41:58So Oscar needs to be
00:41:59around three and a half
00:42:00to four tenths.
00:42:03We need Laika
00:42:04all corners,
00:42:05every lap.
00:42:05That's what I am doing,
00:42:07Brian.
00:42:08That is what I do.
00:42:11Laika,
00:42:11lift and coast
00:42:12for Charles Leclerc.
00:42:14That's what he's trying to do.
00:42:15He's in third
00:42:16at the moment,
00:42:16adrift of this battle
00:42:17up front.
00:42:18His teammate
00:42:18another few seconds
00:42:19behind this.
00:42:22Orlando Norris
00:42:23did run wide there.
00:42:25He's been flirting with it.
00:42:26Coming through
00:42:26the final corner,
00:42:28that really slowed him down
00:42:30into the gravel.
00:42:31Ted,
00:42:31what have you got?
00:42:32A couple of things.
00:42:33First of all,
00:42:33it's gone from bad
00:42:34to worse for Williams.
00:42:35I think you can see
00:42:35on your screen now.
00:42:36Alex Albon
00:42:37has got a car problem.
00:42:38He made a pit stop
00:42:39and then immediately
00:42:40went out
00:42:41and they said
00:42:41that they had to
00:42:42retire the car.
00:42:43So obviously
00:42:43some temperatures
00:42:44have gone.
00:42:45Lots of discussion
00:42:46on the McLaren pit wall.
00:42:47Interrupt me
00:42:47if there's a move.
00:42:48But I think Lando,
00:42:49while he's great defending,
00:42:50is quite reasonably saying,
00:42:51look,
00:42:52you're wanting me
00:42:52to get my stint length
00:42:53up to about lap 20,
00:42:55but I'm having to use up
00:42:56my tyres
00:42:57defending from Oscar.
00:42:58But they're discussing it
00:42:59all on the McLaren pit wall.
00:43:01Tense as it is.
00:43:02Tense again
00:43:03on track.
00:43:04Piastri closing
00:43:05and closing,
00:43:06but just not able
00:43:07to find that little bit more
00:43:09to slide it down the inside.
00:43:11Let's hear from Norris.
00:43:12Lando opportunity
00:43:13made to turn six apex.
00:43:15It makes it harder
00:43:15for the other car.
00:43:16So this is what we saw earlier
00:43:18is Mando taking
00:43:18that wider line,
00:43:19Oscar getting the free air
00:43:20to get to that inside apex.
00:43:24And, yeah,
00:43:25a bit of coaching
00:43:26coming from
00:43:27Will Joseph
00:43:28on the pit wall.
00:43:28I think at the end
00:43:30they get to lap 20,
00:43:32if that is the first thing
00:43:33they were looking at,
00:43:34is not that far away,
00:43:36point A.
00:43:36Point B,
00:43:37Leclerc 5.3 seconds behind.
00:43:41McLaren have a buffer
00:43:42and, you know,
00:43:43good on them
00:43:43to let the cars race
00:43:44as Yuki Tsunoda
00:43:45throws it up the inside
00:43:47of the Aston Martin.
00:43:48Bit of wheel banging
00:43:49with Lance Stroll there.
00:43:51Stunned some front wing damage
00:43:53to the Red Bull.
00:43:54And that has been noted
00:43:56by race control
00:43:57causing a collision.
00:44:00Right, that gap
00:44:01looks like it's gone
00:44:02a little bit bigger to me.
00:44:03We've lost, by the way,
00:44:05if you're just joining us late,
00:44:06signs didn't even start this race.
00:44:07Kimi Antonelli on lap one
00:44:09went into Max Verstappen
00:44:10late on the brakes
00:44:11and took the champion out.
00:44:13And Alex Albon
00:44:14just retiring now.
00:44:15That is three consecutive retirements
00:44:18for Alex Albon
00:44:18and his Williams.
00:44:19And while they are out,
00:44:21we are enjoying
00:44:22a fantastic battle.
00:44:24It's keeping us
00:44:24right on the edge
00:44:25of our seats
00:44:26between Lando Norris
00:44:27and Oscar Piastri.
00:44:29Lando Norris
00:44:30who started on pole.
00:44:31Piastri,
00:44:32who felt like he was wrong
00:44:33slightly maybe
00:44:34of a position
00:44:35in qualifying
00:44:35thanks to a late yellow flag
00:44:37but has not
00:44:38left the mirrors
00:44:39of Norris
00:44:40since lap one.
00:44:41So we saw the gap
00:44:42come up on the screen
00:44:43between Norris
00:44:44and Bortoletto
00:44:45of 19.6 seconds.
00:44:47So the reason
00:44:47that's come up
00:44:48is the pit stop
00:44:49is around 20 seconds here.
00:44:5120 and a half
00:44:52is sort of where
00:44:53we're expecting people to be.
00:44:55If Russell does pit
00:44:56and the McLarens
00:44:57get a slightly bigger gap
00:44:59over Bortoletto
00:45:00that opens up
00:45:01a nice window
00:45:03between Bortoletto
00:45:04and Lewis Hamilton
00:45:05where they could
00:45:06potentially do
00:45:07their first pit stop
00:45:08for Norris
00:45:08and Piastri
00:45:09and still come out
00:45:10in front of the pack
00:45:11in nice clean air.
00:45:12So that's why
00:45:13that gap is relevant
00:45:14as Russell does pit
00:45:15as we can see
00:45:16on the left-hand
00:45:16Sergio Street.
00:45:17Sole remaining
00:45:18Mercedes
00:45:19of George Russell
00:45:20then coming in
00:45:21for his stop
00:45:22will get rid
00:45:23of those medium tyres
00:45:24as the Mercedes
00:45:25mechanics get to work.
00:45:27Fairly quick stop
00:45:272.4 seconds
00:45:28and McLarens
00:45:30on track
00:45:31Piastri closing in
00:45:32under braking again.
00:45:34And what I particularly
00:45:35enjoy that they are
00:45:36letting them race
00:45:36and even a bit
00:45:37of driver coaching
00:45:38from Will Joseph
00:45:39last time around
00:45:40with taking that
00:45:40title line to the apex.
00:45:41They are happy
00:45:43to let this racing
00:45:44play out
00:45:44despite the crash
00:45:45that happened
00:45:46between them
00:45:46in Canada
00:45:47even though
00:45:47that wasn't
00:45:48due to the racing.
00:45:50So Lando
00:45:50the gap to Bortoletto
00:45:51is 20.3
00:45:53so we're happy
00:45:53to pit
00:45:54if we're going
00:45:55to get passed
00:45:56by Oscar
00:45:56we would pit before him
00:45:57if not
00:45:58we just keep going.
00:46:00If we get passed
00:46:01by Oscar
00:46:01we pit before him
00:46:02so if Oscar
00:46:04passes him
00:46:05they let Lando
00:46:06undercut Oscar
00:46:07back
00:46:07that's the message
00:46:08I'm hearing
00:46:09Bernie
00:46:09what are you
00:46:10that's unusual
00:46:11isn't it?
00:46:11I heard
00:46:12something different
00:46:13and you know
00:46:14you're making me
00:46:14questions
00:46:14I thought they meant
00:46:15if they were ahead
00:46:16of Oscar
00:46:17they would box
00:46:18first
00:46:18and if Oscar
00:46:20overtakes
00:46:20they'll remain
00:46:21on track
00:46:22so they'll keep
00:46:22going
00:46:23so if they can
00:46:24remain ahead
00:46:24they'll
00:46:25they'll pay
00:46:25first
00:46:26so maybe
00:46:28I heard it
00:46:28wrong then
00:46:29Ted
00:46:30down to you
00:46:31so George Russell
00:46:32trying the undercut
00:46:33on the Ferraris
00:46:34doesn't have it
00:46:35at the moment
00:46:36but they're keeping
00:46:37an eye on it
00:46:37as Esteban Ocon
00:46:38comes in
00:46:39so yeah
00:46:40George
00:46:40oh sorry Ted
00:46:41Piastri's trying to
00:46:42down the inside
00:46:43at four
00:46:43locks up that front
00:46:45right
00:46:45almost into the back
00:46:47of him
00:46:47Norris
00:46:48manages to hold
00:46:49on to the lead
00:46:50but Piastri pushing
00:46:51there he knows
00:46:52that now is the time
00:46:53with pit stops
00:46:54imminent
00:46:54and sliding out of
00:46:55the corner
00:46:56for Norris
00:46:57so close
00:46:58for the two
00:46:58McLarens
00:46:59and there
00:46:59on cue
00:47:00the lead car
00:47:01Lando Norris
00:47:02told to box box
00:47:04come in
00:47:04for his first pit stop
00:47:05and that's why
00:47:06Oscar was desperately
00:47:07trying to get up front
00:47:07because he wants
00:47:08to get priority
00:47:09in terms of
00:47:10the position
00:47:11it's not happened
00:47:12Lando will get
00:47:13to pit first
00:47:14Lando will get
00:47:14fresh boots
00:47:15and will get
00:47:16the benefit
00:47:16of a fast out
00:47:18lap
00:47:18but of course
00:47:19the pit stop
00:47:20has got to go
00:47:21smoothly
00:47:21McLaren have a little
00:47:22bump by the way
00:47:23on the way
00:47:23into their pit
00:47:24box
00:47:24for those of you
00:47:25who joined us
00:47:25in free practice
00:47:2610 for showing
00:47:26a little bit
00:47:28of hesitation
00:47:293.1
00:47:30for Norris
00:47:31so let's remember
00:47:32that time
00:47:33for when Oscar
00:47:34comes in
00:47:34presumably
00:47:35on the next lap
00:47:37so that's sure
00:47:38it's going to be
00:47:39tight with Gabrielle
00:47:40Portoletto
00:47:40look at that
00:47:41green Sauber
00:47:41coming through
00:47:42now
00:47:42you get fed
00:47:43out on the exit
00:47:44of turn two
00:47:45he should manage
00:47:46to do it
00:47:46and get up to pace
00:47:47Norris then does
00:47:48get fed out
00:47:49into that nice
00:47:50gap between
00:47:51Lewis Hamilton
00:47:51and the Sauber
00:47:53of Portoletto
00:47:54he's gone on
00:47:54to the hard
00:47:55tyre now
00:47:56so in
00:47:56for a long
00:47:57stint
00:47:57for Lando
00:47:59Norris
00:47:59now Piastri
00:48:00is free
00:48:00to try
00:48:01and push
00:48:01with whatever
00:48:02tyre life
00:48:02he might have
00:48:03left
00:48:03in that
00:48:05Pirelli
00:48:05rubber
00:48:05let's see
00:48:07your pace
00:48:07in free air
00:48:08now
00:48:08understood
00:48:12let's see
00:48:12how the pace
00:48:13is
00:48:13that indicates
00:48:16to me
00:48:16they're not
00:48:16going to
00:48:16pull him
00:48:17in
00:48:17straight away
00:48:18and
00:48:18this is
00:48:19the replay
00:48:20he was
00:48:22a day late
00:48:22and a dollar
00:48:23short
00:48:23Oscar
00:48:23wasn't he
00:48:24coming from
00:48:24that far
00:48:25back
00:48:25it was
00:48:26the lunge
00:48:27of all
00:48:27lunges
00:48:27let's take
00:48:28a look
00:48:28here
00:48:28this is
00:48:28Norris
00:48:29into the
00:48:30box
00:48:30the front
00:48:33left
00:48:33front
00:48:33left
00:48:34they had
00:48:34to have
00:48:34a second
00:48:34go on
00:48:35the wheel
00:48:35gun
00:48:35to get
00:48:36that on
00:48:37so that's
00:48:37where the
00:48:38slight delay
00:48:38came from
00:48:39on his way
00:48:41on his way
00:48:41back out
00:48:41into this race
00:48:42then
00:48:43feeds out
00:48:43in fourth
00:48:44place
00:48:45for
00:48:46Lando
00:48:46Norris
00:48:47yeah
00:48:47Piastri's
00:48:47carried on
00:48:48Bernie
00:48:48so
00:48:49they've
00:48:49given
00:48:50Oscar
00:48:50the chance
00:48:51he's
00:48:51done

00:56:30that might
00:56:30put the
00:56:31cars
00:56:31at risk
00:56:31I have to
00:56:32say
00:56:32though
00:56:32Lando
00:56:33up at
00:56:34the
00:56:34front
00:56:34that lead
00:56:35is
00:56:36sort of

00:56:38the six
00:56:38second
00:56:39mark
00:56:39now
00:56:39so
00:56:39it's

00:56:41stint
00:56:41hasn't yet
00:56:42worked out
00:56:42for Oscar
00:56:43Piastri
00:56:43Bernie
00:56:44what have you
00:56:44got
00:56:44yeah
00:56:45just as we
00:56:46see Leclerc
00:56:46there
00:56:47make that
00:56:47final clearing
00:56:48manoeuvre
00:56:48through
00:56:49Lawson
00:56:49that
00:56:49Alonso
00:56:50Lawson
00:56:50that
00:56:50he
00:56:51actually
00:56:51ended up
00:56:52pitting
00:56:52behind
00:56:52the crowd
00:56:53was unhappy
00:56:53with that
00:56:54immediately
00:56:54on the
00:56:55pit wall
00:56:55saying
00:56:55how we
00:56:56managed
00:56:56to pit
00:56:57ourselves
00:56:57between
00:56:57two cars
00:56:58that have
00:56:58DRS
00:56:59from each
00:56:59other
00:56:59Hamilton
00:57:00now has
00:57:00to go
00:57:01through
00:57:01that
00:57:01pain
00:57:01of those
00:57:02two
00:57:02cars
00:57:02Ferrari
00:57:03pit wall
00:57:03said
00:57:04that was
00:57:04for optimum
00:57:05strategy
00:57:06optimum
00:57:07race
00:57:07time
00:57:08and the
00:57:08big
00:57:09point
00:57:09for that
00:57:10is
00:57:10that's
00:57:11much
00:57:11closer
00:57:11to what
00:57:12Piastri
00:57:12has done
00:57:12so Piastri
00:57:13if the
00:57:14Ferrari
00:57:14pit wall
00:57:15strategy
00:57:15is right
00:57:15is on
00:57:16a much
00:57:16more
00:57:16optimum
00:57:17race
00:57:17so maybe
00:57:17at the
00:57:18end of
00:57:18the race
00:57:19we'll end
00:57:19up much
00:57:19closer
00:57:19than ours
00:57:20but what
00:57:21do you
00:57:21think Bernie
00:57:22I mean
00:57:22because
00:57:23there's one
00:57:24thing looking
00:57:25at the optimum
00:57:25numbers
00:57:26but there's
00:57:27also
00:57:28clearly
00:57:28driving around
00:57:29in traffic
00:57:30is not
00:57:30great
00:57:30is it
00:57:31yeah
00:57:31I think
00:57:31in that
00:57:32case
00:57:32they were
00:57:33very close
00:57:33they were
00:57:33only clear
00:57:34and lost
00:57:34in two
00:57:35tenths of
00:57:35laps
00:57:35it was
00:57:36going to
00:57:36be a
00:57:36significant
00:57:37number
00:57:37more laps
00:57:38in order
00:57:39to clear
00:57:39that traffic
00:57:40you never
00:57:40know
00:57:41with
00:57:41Lawson
00:57:42and
00:57:42Alonzo
00:57:42how long
00:57:43you're
00:57:43going to
00:57:43extend
00:57:43that
00:57:44stint
00:57:44are
00:57:45they
00:57:45targeting
00:57:45a
00:57:45one
00:57:46stop
00:57:46so I
00:57:46think
00:57:47for
00:57:47Ferrari
00:57:47side
00:57:47it was
00:57:48too
00:57:48much
00:57:48of a
00:57:48risk
00:57:48to
00:57:49keep
00:57:49going
00:57:49and
00:57:50you
00:57:50want
00:57:50to
00:57:50have
00:57:50fresh
00:57:51tires
00:57:51get
00:57:51behind
00:57:52he's
00:57:52gone
00:57:52through
00:57:52pretty
00:57:53quickly
00:57:53he's
00:57:53not lost
00:57:54that much
00:57:54time
00:57:54with
00:57:55it
00:57:55they've
00:57:55extended
00:57:56what
00:57:56they
00:57:56thought
00:57:56was
00:57:57possible
00:57:57on
00:57:58the
00:57:58grass
00:57:59there
00:57:59Lewis
00:58:00Hamilton
00:58:00flying his
00:58:02way
00:58:02round the
00:58:03outside
00:58:03of Liam
00:58:04Lawson
00:58:04through
00:58:05turn 6
00:58:06and then
00:58:06again
00:58:06through
00:58:07turn 7
00:58:07Hamilton
00:58:08having to
00:58:08work hard
00:58:09there
00:58:09to
00:58:09get
00:58:10through
00:58:10on
00:58:10the
00:58:11young
00:58:11Kiwi
00:58:12Hamilton
00:58:12now
00:58:12displacing
00:58:14that
00:58:14traffic
00:58:14and up
00:58:16into
00:58:16fourth
00:58:17spots
00:58:18this was him
00:58:19getting through
00:58:20Fernando
00:58:21Alonso
00:58:21a little
00:58:22earlier
00:58:22into turn
00:58:231
00:58:24it's interesting
00:58:24Alonso kept
00:58:25looking down
00:58:25the straight
00:58:26in his left
00:58:27mirror
00:58:27but
00:58:28Lewis
00:58:28went to
00:58:29the right
00:58:29as
00:58:29Ollie
00:58:30Behrman
00:58:30locking up
00:58:31running
00:58:31wide
00:58:31turn 1
00:58:33that's a
00:58:33horrible
00:58:34ride
00:58:34over the
00:58:35curb
00:58:35and
00:58:36was in
00:58:36a shock
00:58:37through your
00:58:37spine
00:58:38and
00:58:38possibly
00:58:39possibly
00:58:40affect
00:58:40the floor
00:58:41of the
00:58:41car
00:58:41as well
00:58:42but the
