00:00:00You know, it's just one race, one race in a series of races since 1950 in the World Championship.
00:00:07It's number 1137 to be exact, and it's round 12 of this 2025 season.
00:00:13But you know, some races are more special than others.
00:00:16And in this 75th anniversary year of the Formula One World Championship,
00:00:20let's take 52 laps around the track that kick-started it all on May the 13th in 1950.
00:00:27Best of British to the 20 drivers in today's Grand Prix, it is the British Grand Prix.
00:00:32And what a race could be in store for us today.
00:00:34Around the 18 corners here in Silverstone, 8 to the left and 10 to the right.
00:00:3977% full throttle for your lap distance, intermediate and weather tyres on standby.
00:00:44We could use the Inters at the start.
00:00:46And if it's dry enough after some early rain today, the soft is the C4, the medium, the C3 and the hard.
00:00:52Barely used so far this weekend is the C2.
00:00:55We have had torrential rain, but now blue skies above the campsites that are full
00:01:00and the grandstands that are absolutely packed.
00:01:03And a starting grid that features 19 cars because Franco Colopinto's had a brand new power unit
00:01:08fitted to his Alpine and he starts on the pit lane.
00:01:11Nico Hülkenberg then at the back in his Sauber,
00:01:13out-qualified by Gabriel Bortoleto for the sixth time this season.
00:01:17Oli Behrmann will start 18th.
00:01:18He had a 10-place grid drop for a red flag infringement.
00:01:21Lance Stroll out in Q1 for the eighth time this year alongside him.
00:01:24Then comes Gabriel Bortoleto and alongside him, Liam Lawson.
00:01:27They had career best finishes seven days ago.
00:01:30Esteban Ocon starts 14th for Haas.
00:01:32Alongside him, Alex Albon, a DNF for him in the last three Grand Prix.
00:01:36And then we go to Isaac Hadjar and Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull.
00:01:40It's his best ever start here at Silverstone.
00:01:43The top ten, Kimi Antonelli, a three-place grid penalty for his crash with Max Verstappen last week.
00:01:48And Carlos Sainz in ninth, his best start in five races.
00:01:51Pierre Gasly starts eighth for Alpine alongside Fernando Alonso,
00:01:55who starts where he's finished in the last two Grand Prix.
00:01:58Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton sharing row three for Ferrari.
00:02:02Hamilton out-qualifying Leclerc for the third time in four Grand Prix.
00:02:05And then it's George Russell on row two alongside his fellow Brit, Lando Norris,
00:02:09who started third here at Silverstone 12 months ago.
00:02:12Oscar Piastri on the front row, Max Verstappen with a fourth pole position of the season.
00:02:16It's the same front row that we had at Jeddah, and we know what happened at the start there.
00:02:21Martin Brundle alongside me for 52 laps of the British Grand Prix.
00:02:25Can't wait to get this one underway.
00:02:27And nor could I.
00:02:28And I'd be having a brilliant day until I read this.
00:02:31The formation lap will be started behind the safety car.
00:02:35Are you kidding? It looks like I'd be dry any minute now.
00:02:37What's the latest forecast?
00:02:40We're expecting around lap 15 to 17, potentially heavy rain cell.
00:02:46And then presumably the drivers will be forced into the pits to have the stabiliser wheels fitted.
00:02:51By the umbrella attached, yeah.
00:02:53There might be a bit of standing water around and about, but I'm somewhat surprised by that,
00:02:58because everybody's committed to intermediate tyres.
00:03:01It's too fast.
00:03:03The corners are too fast to, you know, just take a risk on a set of slicks when you can't get them up to temperature.
00:03:10You will have an almighty accident.
00:03:12Look at the sky.
00:03:13Look at the track.
00:03:14There's the intermediate tyres with the lighter grooves.
00:03:18Ted, what can you tell us down there in the pit lane?
00:03:21You're not the only one who's surprised.
00:03:22I can see a lot of team sporting managers talking to each other.
00:03:25Some raised eyebrows at that decision from the race director.
00:03:29Maybe he knows something we don't, that there's some standing water.
00:03:32But I don't think so, Martin.
00:03:33I mean, I wouldn't have been surprised to see anybody leaving the grid on a set of slicks,
00:03:38so much as the sun now drying the track quite quickly.
00:03:41Start this race 10 minutes later, and you'd definitely be thinking about starting on dry weather tyres,
00:03:47at least before that next band of rain comes.
00:03:49There is the gold trophy they're all competing for today.
00:03:51Won by 12 different British drivers.
00:03:53And a win for a British driver today would be the 25th win by a British driver here at Silverstone.
00:04:00Silverstone, as we count down then to this formation lap behind the safety car.
00:04:04Bert Myerlander being called into action.
00:04:06And yes, it does look a little bit damp in patches.
00:04:09But Martin, I have seen formation laps in way, way wetter conditions
00:04:13without the need for a safety car in previous Grand Prix.
00:04:18Which means, though, they'll take it maybe a little bit more cautiously than they normally would.
00:04:22Max Verstappen letting Bert Myerlander get well, well away.
00:04:26I don't know if he's obliged to keep within 10 car lengths or not,
00:04:31but he's very slow getting off the start there.
00:04:34Yeah, I don't know if he had a little gremlin getting away,
00:04:36but he's away now and he'll catch the safety car up.
00:04:38But they've been, since the heavy rain, they've been...
00:04:42I mean, if the drivers had a choice now, from what I've seen in the track so far,
00:04:47I think they wish they'd be on slick tyres.
00:04:49They'd be talking about slicks in no time at all.
00:04:53There's a dry line even around the outside.
00:04:56The track would be what we call green,
00:04:58because it had such a heavy wash overnight and again this morning,
00:05:01and cars running on it on wet tyres.
00:05:03So it's like they turn up on a Friday morning with a green racetrack.
00:05:07But I haven't even seen a puddle yet.
00:05:09No, this is about to dry.
00:05:10Let alone standing water.
00:05:11It's slick tyres.
00:05:12What are they doing?
00:05:13But if they're going to come in,
00:05:14and I think you're right,
00:05:15this is a standing start.
00:05:17We won't start behind the safety car.
00:05:19But if they're going to come in pretty swiftly,
00:05:21that might not be good news for McLaren,
00:05:24who have Oscar Piastri second and Lando Norris third.
00:05:27Ferrari have Lewis Hamilton fifth and Charles Leclerc sixth.
00:05:29They're going to have to double stack.
00:05:30And if everyone's coming in at the same time, that could be chaos.
00:05:33It could.
00:05:34And that's advantage for Stappen in that respect.
00:05:37And to an extent, Russell as well,
00:05:40given that Antonin is a little bit behind him.
00:05:44But yes, the second car has to wait for service.
00:05:47It's not allowed to stack the pack up behind.
00:05:51Otherwise, they'll take a penalty.
00:05:52You can't disadvantage your rivals
00:05:54just because you want to pit two cars at the same time.
00:05:58So, and there's only one pit crew, one pit station per team.
00:06:03George Russell has already been told by Marcus Dudley,
00:06:05his race engineer, get ready to box.
00:06:08Would you box at the end of the formation lap?
00:06:11It's a risky one because you're going to drop to the back.
00:06:13But if everyone's got to get off those intermediate tyres,
00:06:16that might be the right thing to do.
00:06:18Remember back to Hungary when Lewis Hamilton
00:06:20started all on its own on the front row
00:06:22as everyone else came in.
00:06:24And that was a restart there, wasn't it?
00:06:26So, let's see what they do.
00:06:28But there is absolutely no reason whatsoever
00:06:31that this is, it's fine.
00:06:34It's fine because it's effectively the formation lap, isn't it?
00:06:37They will now form up and we're back to square one
00:06:40because the safety car is getting out of the way quickly.
00:06:42So, no harm done and no problem.
00:06:45Just all formation.
00:06:49Surely, surely they're not going to leave the safety car out.
00:06:53It is, though, a bit wet at stone and into club.
00:06:57This is the final sector.
00:06:58The last few corners look a lot wetter
00:07:01than the other side of the track.
00:07:02And we have got cars coming in.
00:07:04George Russell is coming in.
00:07:06Charles Leclerc is coming in.
00:07:08Lewis Hamilton has stayed out.
00:07:10So, just two cars coming in to change tyres
00:07:13before we get underway here.
00:07:16And it's medium compound tyres that are going on.
00:07:19It's hard tyres for George Russell.
00:07:21So, already a split in the way that the teams are thinking
00:07:24is the best way to run this race.
00:07:26And you can run longer on those tyres, of course.
00:07:28So, we're going to have a thinned out grid.
00:07:31Yeah.
00:07:31And they'll struggle to get away.
00:07:32Then those in the pit lane.
00:07:35The last sector is just too wet for slicks.
00:07:37And that's the caution there.
00:07:39It's like races at Spa,
00:07:41where it's dry on one part of the track.
00:07:42It's wet on the other.
00:07:43Baermann and Bortoletto and Hadjar
00:07:45also coming into the pits, taking a gamble.
00:07:49And, yes, they're going to have to be so careful
00:07:51on their first two or three laps.
00:07:52But they save 20 seconds not making a pit stop.
00:07:56They mustn't lose more than 20 seconds.
00:07:57Fourth pole of the season for Max Verstappen.

00:08:16And he's still ahead there of Pierre Gasly.

00:08:22Piastri stays ahead of Norris.
00:08:24Hamilton there looking for a way past.
00:08:26Gasly on the inside trying to make headway too.
00:08:29Somehow they all manage to avoid each other.
00:08:31Verstappen finding tremendous traction now
00:08:33out of the loop onto the Wellington train.
00:08:35And going wide in this room and racing bulls.
00:08:37Going off and into the barriers there at high speed.
00:08:41And it wouldn't surprise me at all
00:08:43if that wasn't Liam Lawson who was back there
00:08:46with Isaac Hadja, his teammate, coming into the pits.
00:08:50He was on six.
00:08:50It could have actually been Hadja losing it.
00:08:53And it is Lawson right at the back.
00:08:55So we've got yellow flags waving there.
00:08:57Verstappen continues on his way to Cops.
00:08:59You can see the spray as they make their way right-handed.
00:09:02But Lawson is back on track.
00:09:03So we shouldn't need a safety car.
00:09:05Those yellow flags should go away
00:09:07unless there's debris out there.
00:09:09And they're immediately, of course,
00:09:10looking for wetter parts of the track.
00:09:13Ocon, has he been in contact with Lawson?
00:09:17Verstappen then leads from Oscar Piastri.
00:09:19Liam Lawson has stopped-ish.
00:09:22He's just crawling away to a safe place.
00:09:25Double yellow flags being wet.
00:09:26Here comes Lewis Hamilton into Stowe corner
00:09:29on Lando Norris.
00:09:30Hamilton's on the inside.
00:09:32Has he got the move done?
00:09:34No.
00:09:35Lando Norris fighting back there.
00:09:37And these two really scrapping away
00:09:39in treacherous conditions down at Stowe.
00:09:42It is very wet in the final sector.
00:09:44We'll keep an eye on the big wobble there
00:09:46from Lando Norris.
00:09:48But it held up Lewis Hamilton as well
00:09:50and put him on his back foot.
00:09:51So Norris then, in front of his beloved grandstand
00:09:55down there at Stowe, kept it on around the outside.
00:09:59How long before they want to come in for intermediaries?
00:10:02As I say, well, in the first, the middle sector alone,
00:10:06those on slicks are losing, are losing five seconds.
00:10:10Now, this is a tough decision.
00:10:11They're losing five seconds per sector at the moment,
00:10:15those on slicks.
00:10:16And that's because he's got a puncture,
00:10:17he's got floor damage.
00:10:19And that car, well, it's not anywhere near a service road there.
00:10:23So...
00:10:23This could be a full safety car, to be honest,
00:10:26because they're going to have to get that car recovered.
00:10:28It's virtual at the moment.
00:10:29Everyone slows down 40% of their racing speed.
00:10:33The race is neutralized.
00:10:34Lawson was hit by Esteban Ocon,
00:10:37which is why Ocon's got damage
00:10:38and why Lawson has pulled over to the right-hand side
00:10:40on the Wellington Strait.
00:10:42Now, the cost of a pit stop
00:10:43under these slower conditions is just nine seconds.
00:10:47Is it worth coming in now and putting the slicks on,
00:10:50or is it just too wet in those final few corners
00:10:53for slick racing tyres?
00:10:55Well, look, when Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris
00:10:57were going wheel to wheel,
00:10:58they were both struggling to get the traction
00:11:00that they wanted.
00:11:02And Norris just about staying ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
00:11:05If they'd have been on slick tyres,
00:11:06chances are they'd both have been skirting off
00:11:08into the Lando Norris grandstand.
00:11:10The Lando Stands, as they like to call them.
00:11:12Yeah, Matt took me on the radio saying
00:11:15under VSC, earliest time of arrival.
00:11:18Well, how come Piastri's so much closer to me?
00:11:21Right, here's Esteban Ocon,
00:11:23and that's Liam Lawson on the right-hand side.
00:11:26Oh!
00:11:28And that was only ever going to send
00:11:30the racing bull spinning towards the barriers.
00:11:32He's done well to avoid the barriers there, Martin,
00:11:34because he was being sent off there
00:11:36at quite a speed, even for such a slow corner.
00:11:39Look, he gets his foot down.
00:11:40Here he comes, bang.
00:11:41I didn't know he was there.

00:11:43I don't think Ocon did anything wrong.
00:11:44He did, but he just...

00:11:53oh, dude, he just drove straight into the side of me.
00:11:56Now, Ocon had someone to his left-hand side as well,
00:12:00which might have exasperated the problem.

00:12:05Franco Colopinto is showing us retired from this race
00:12:10for whatever reason.
00:12:12And I didn't even know that Franco Colopinto was in the race
00:12:16because we haven't really seen him.
00:12:17Slick tyres for Kimi Antonelli.
00:12:19Mercedes making use, then, of a cheaper stop,
00:12:22losing less time from your race time
00:12:24behind the virtual safety car.
00:12:26So, Colopinto came in and stalled and stuck in second gear
00:12:34and they retired the car, it seems.
00:12:36So, now you've got to try and second-guess
00:12:39how long the virtual safety car will be out for
00:12:41because when it's gone off, even just by himself,
00:12:47that's because they come out of the blankets at 70 degrees C.
00:12:50You want them at 100,
00:12:52but then you trundle down the pit lane.
00:12:54They're moving the racing bull now.
00:12:56So, if you want to make a pit stop,
00:12:58it needs to be this lap.
00:12:59I think the whole track is good for Slick,
00:13:02apart from the last two corners.
00:13:04That's about right.
00:13:05Antonelli has come out ahead of his teammate George Russell,
00:13:08who started fourth and Antonelli started tenth.
00:13:10That's how much time George Russell lost
00:13:12on the one bit of racing lap we've had.
00:13:14So, what happens then is you'll be out there
00:13:17going more and more slowly.
00:13:18You want to put those tyres on
00:13:20as late as you think you can get away with
00:13:22so that you can get out and fire them up.
00:13:25Here's the start.
00:13:26Yeah, and I thought Oscar Piastri had got a better start
00:13:28and I think his reaction time was better than Max Verstappen
00:13:31and look how he was gaining on Verstappen here
00:13:33and almost going wheel-to-wheel into that first turn,
00:13:36but Verstappen could take a faster speed at the wider line.
00:13:39Yeah, Piastri knew he'd be slamming across there.
00:13:41Piastri got a thing of his world championship,
00:13:44but he was on a much, much tighter line,
00:13:46isn't it? A different corner coming at it from that angle, basically.
00:13:49Lando in third really struggling for grip.
00:13:52We saw Lewis Hamilton coming at him
00:13:54on more than one occasion on that opening lap.
00:13:57It was Yuki Tsunoda, by the way,
00:13:59on the inside of Esteban Ocon
00:14:01that caused the chain reaction
00:14:02that has seen Liam Lawson go off and retire.
00:14:06This was Lewis Hamilton at part one against Lando Norris.
00:14:10No thing doing there.
00:14:11See how dry the line was.
00:14:13This now Esteban Ocon into the loop
00:14:15and round the Aintree.
00:14:17And they're all trying to hunt for that dry line
00:14:20and Tsunoda on the left,
00:14:21Lawson on the right,
00:14:22and Ocon stuck in the middle.
00:14:24Ocon had nowhere to go,
00:14:25but you know I was talking about
00:14:27the poor visibility in these cars,
00:14:29and I just don't think Lawson knew he was still there,
00:14:32but Ocon did nothing wrong there at all.
00:14:34He had nothing he could do.
00:14:36So Charles Leclerc is down in 15th,
00:14:37George Russell down in 14th,
00:14:39Isaac Hadja 16th,
00:14:40and Bortoletto 17th.
00:14:41They pitted before the race got underway.
00:14:45The virtual safety car is ending,
00:14:47and we can go racing again.
00:14:49And here we are,
00:14:50Verstappen and Piastri heading the field
00:14:52with some dark clouds overhead
00:14:53down that Wellington straight.

00:15:20That could be a full safety car,

00:15:42which gives him a bit more straight-line speed
00:15:45than the McLaren,

00:15:47through some of the faster corners,
00:15:49making the job a bit more difficult
00:15:50for Piastri to try and overtake,
00:15:52and this is what happened to Bortoletto.
00:15:54He is almost tiptoeing around,
00:15:56afraid to get on the throttle,
00:15:57because that's what happens when you do.

00:16:01He was being so cautious through there.
00:16:04He's got a lot of damage to his rear wing.

00:16:17Now he's confetti of carbon fibre
00:16:20that's off the racing line,
00:16:23so I don't think there's any need to go and fetch that,

00:16:29but if there's heavy rain coming in 10 laps,
00:16:31will they just try and eke it out?
00:16:34I think they're going to need to, aren't they?

00:16:41Rumours arrive that he could be being replaced
00:16:43by Valtteri Bottas or Jack Doohan once again at the next race,
00:16:46and there is Oscar Piastri
00:16:48really charging towards Max Verstappen.
00:16:50Max Verstappen's car sliding all over the place
00:16:53in the slower corners.
00:16:55We know he's got a bit skinnier wing on that,
00:16:56but Piastri, I think,
00:16:58has kept his tyres in better shape,
00:17:01and he must be getting ready for a look at the lead.
00:17:04We've got a yellow flag out there as well.
00:17:07We've got a lot of slow-moving cars.
00:17:09I think the yellow flag is for Bortoletto,
00:17:11who's still trying to make his way back to the pits
00:17:13and is being told to retire the car.
00:17:15We've got two races going on here.
00:17:17Those on the slick tyres really struggling,
00:17:19the five of them,
00:17:21and those on the intermediates struggling a little bit too.
00:17:23And these are our two out in front,
00:17:25hunting for a few damp patches down the Wellington Strait.
00:17:28Max looked like a rally driver coming out of Beckett's there.
00:17:32He's got no rear grip at all.
00:17:33These are the last few corners.
00:17:36Stowe is the one that's really, really treacherous at the moment,
00:17:39and then Intervail,
00:17:41and you definitely need the intermediates there,
00:17:43but for the rest of the lap,
00:17:44you're putting so much heat through these intermediates,
00:17:47they're surely not going to last that much longer.
00:17:50And it's hard to protect them in there.
00:17:52We've got another virtual safety car,
00:17:54presumably for Bortoletto then,
00:17:55stranded out on the track somewhere.
00:17:58Piastri's just done the fastest lap of the Grand Prix.
00:18:01And another car then,
00:18:03they can press the button,
00:18:04put it into neutral on the front of the chassis,
00:18:06and hopefully wheel that away.
00:18:08But you're not really allowed to drag a damaged car
00:18:12at snail's pace back to the pit,
00:18:15especially here.
00:18:15It's too dangerous.
00:18:16What a shame for Gabriel Bortoletto.
00:18:17His first British Grand Prix in Formula One is over.
00:18:21This is George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
00:18:23I'm much quicker here.
00:18:24Swapping places.
00:18:25So invert positions.
00:18:26We'll invert positions.
00:18:27We will do it now.
00:18:29Team orders on that one to get George Russell past.
00:18:32But those on the slick tyres are so detached
00:18:35from the leading group and the leading pack here.
00:18:39That's the rally moment that you were talking about
00:18:41with Max Verstappen.
00:18:43Verstappen's going through Brooklands and Luffield.
00:18:46Russell's just coming up to Village.
00:18:47That's the big difference.
00:18:48So what they'll be,
00:18:49those on slicks will be hoping for a full safety car
00:18:52so that the pack goes like a crocodile
00:18:54behind the leader in the safety car.
00:18:57And they can make all of that deficit up.
00:18:59As you say, we've got two races going on.
00:19:02The second race is led by Russell and Antonelli at the moment.
00:19:06They're not really that far behind
00:19:07if the track continues to dry.
00:19:10They're looking handy.
00:19:12If they can keep it on the racetrack.
00:19:14And George Russell looked like he was keeping us
00:19:15on the racetrack just fine.
00:19:16Yeah, what's going to thwart them, though,
00:19:18is rain in ten minutes.
00:19:21Everyone's going to have to come in,
00:19:22whether they're on the intermediates
00:19:23or the dry tyres,
00:19:25depending on how heavy the rain is.
00:19:27We're on lap six of 52.
00:19:29We haven't actually had a huge amount of racing.
00:19:31We have had a lot of incident.
00:19:33Colopinto into the pits at the end of the formation lap.
00:19:38And he got stuck in second gear, car stalled.
00:19:41He's out of the race.
00:19:43Lawson out of the race after being hit by Ocon,
00:19:45who was trying to avoid Yuki Tsunoda.
00:19:47And Lawson went off towards the barriers at Aintree.
00:19:50And that was the end of him.
00:19:52He got going again but couldn't carry on in the race.
00:19:54And Bortoleto, another one to lose it at Farm Curve
00:19:58this time around in the damp conditions.
00:20:00And he's got sent off into the gravel and the barriers.
00:20:03Too much damage on his car.
00:20:04Verstappen has led from the start.
00:20:07But we haven't had a huge amount of racing.
00:20:09But staying on the track at times has been very difficult,
00:20:12whether we're racing or under the virtual safety car.
00:20:14Piastri is second.
00:20:15Norris is third.
00:20:17Light rain around six laps.
00:20:18And then four laps after that,
00:20:20there'll be heavier rain.
00:20:22You know, the trouble is,
00:20:23when your intermediates absolutely had it,
00:20:27heavy rain, they're no good.
00:20:29You just, they won't clear the water.
00:20:32And you're better with fresh intermediates.
00:20:34But they're still going with some soft tyres
00:20:36on the Aston Martin.
