00:00:00As an arena in Stateline Nevada our main event the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship as Virgil Hill defends his title against Crawford Ashley. We are set now for post fight interviews from our first.
00:00:30Let's go.
00:01:00Crawford Ashley of England, he's had three fights since the loss to none for the title,
00:01:15losing via six-round TKO to former world champion Dennis Andres, bouncing back
00:01:19with an impressive decision over Nicky Piper for the British light heavyweight crown.
00:01:23Ashley's first victory by decision and his most recent outing, a third-round stoppage
00:01:28of Hunter Clay, February 25th.
00:01:31And here is the champion, 31-year-old Virgil Hill, 39-and-1, 20 knockouts, 15 of his 19 title
00:01:38fights in his backyard of North Dakota, but tonight he takes his act on the road for the
00:01:43first time since March of 92 when he fought in Melbourne, Australia.
00:01:54Okay, let's go.
00:01:58We'll rock and roll!
00:02:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:02:46They had lost their faith and now they had to learn there was no place to return, nowhere they could turn, Gerald King, oh, marching on the train.
00:03:06Virgil Hill, an adopted son in nearby Las Vegas where he's done a lot of his training coming off his rematch with Frank Tate back in July, second career win over Tate as he first won the WBA light heavyweight proud in 87 over Leslie Stewart after 10 successful defenses, Hill was 30 and 0 when he suffered his first defeat to Thomas Hearns.
00:03:26Just over a year later, he regained the vacant title by beating Tate in the first meeting and he's defended his belt six times since reclaiming it.
00:03:34Time now to check the numbers as we look at the tail of the tape the age almost even as you can see nearly a three inch height advantage for Ashley the weight also almost even and almost a two inch reach advantage for Ashley and of the WBA rules for this title fight 10 point must scoring system three scoring judges no standing eight count the three knockdown rule is in effect only the referee can stop the fight a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round.
00:04:00So here at the star of the desert arena in stateline, Nevada closing in on our main event, the WBA light heavyweight championship set for the introductions, we go back to our ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:04:15Ladies and gentlemen, before our main event of the evening at this time, I'd like to ask you to rise for the playing of our national anthem.
00:04:23Ladies and gentlemen, how are you?
00:04:49Not one man, and not bat多少 my name.
00:06:21This bout is scheduled for 12 rounds of boxing and is sanctioned by the World Boxing Association.
00:06:28President, Gilberto Mendoza, Supervisor, Dr. Calvin Inalsing, along with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Chairman, Dr. James Nave, Commissioners, Nat Carasali, Dr. Elias Gunnam, Luther Mack, and Crispin Rivera.
00:06:41The executive director is Mark Ratner.
00:06:44Positions at ringside, Dr. Flip Omansky, Dr. James Game, Dr. William Berliner, and Dr. Margaret Goodman, timekeepers at the bell, also keeping count of the knockdowns.
00:06:53Jane Broadfoot, James Cavan, and Mike LaCella.
00:06:57Introducing to you the judges at ringside scoring this bout.
00:07:01Dwayne Ford, Roberto Ramirez, and Marcos Torres.
00:07:06All right, fans, here we go with the main event of the evening, and now, ladies and gentlemen in attendance, and boxing fans joining us around the world, it's showtime!
00:07:19With the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship of the World, scheduled for 12 rounds of boxing, the referee in charge of this bout, Richard Steele.
00:07:32Introducing to you first, ladies and gentlemen on my right, the challenger fighting out of the blue corner.
00:07:39He is wearing black trunks with multicolor trim, and hailing from Leeds, England.
00:07:45He weighed in at 174 pounds, his record includes 20 wins, 6 losses, 1 draw, with 19 wins, coming by way of knockout.
00:07:57Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome tonight's challenger, the current British light heavyweight champion, Crawford Ashley.
00:08:06And his opponent across the ring is the defending champion on my left, fighting out of the red corner.
00:08:16He is wearing black trunks with silver trim, and hailing from Bismarck, North Dakota.
00:08:23He weighed in at the light heavyweight limit of 175 pounds.
00:08:27His outstanding record includes 39 wins, only one defeat, with 20 wins, coming by way of knockout.
00:08:36Tonight he is making the 17th defense of his title.
00:08:39Here is the two-time WBA light heavyweight champion of the world.
00:08:43Please welcome the pride of North Dakota, known as Quicksilver.
00:08:48Introducing Virgil Hill.
00:08:52Once again, here's the referee in charge.
00:09:00Now to give instructions, Richard Steele.
00:09:05All right, I gave both kinds of instructions in the dressing room.
00:09:08I'm partial again, obey my commands at all times.
00:09:12In case there's a knockdown, the man must score a knockdown.
00:09:16Go to the neutral corner, stay there until I tell him to come out.
00:09:19So, Virgil Hill, 39 and 1 with 20 knockouts, similar to our first fight.
00:09:37A vast difference here in terms of world championship experience.
00:09:40Hill in 19 world title fights.
00:09:41Ashley only won when he lost to Michael Nunn a few years ago as a super middleweight.
00:09:46And here we go, round one, scheduled for 12 for the WBA light heavyweight championship.
00:09:52Hill said ever since he came back from Australia, where he went to train following the 91 loss to Hearns,
00:09:57he's been the aggressor in the ring.
00:10:01And despite the knocks on him, this is his 17th title defense.
00:10:05He told us he's not ducking.
00:10:07Mike McCallum, or he said McCallum thinks he is.
00:10:10Meanwhile, Ashley, tall, rangy, good power, speed.
00:10:14He's a tough guy, 20, six and one with 19 knockouts.
00:10:19I'll tell you one thing he can find.
00:10:21His thing is, if he doesn't knock him out, he loses.
00:10:24But he has knocked out a respectable number of men for the amount he's walking.
00:10:29Well, he said he was going to try and use his speed, too, and his jab.
00:10:31He thought his jab would be key in this fight.
00:10:33So far, he hasn't used it as effectively as Virgil.
00:10:36And right now, Virgil not taking an aggressive posture.
00:10:39Look in the circle and see what happens.
00:10:41Hill is a counterpuncher.
00:10:43Some call Hill a one-armed fighter, and that he only uses the left,
00:10:47but it's a quick and deceptive left hook.
00:10:49As a workman-like quality, only two knockouts in the last three years.
00:10:54He tries to control the tempo of the fight with a good left jab.
00:10:59Well, I've been in with Virgil, and we were, as they say, all but intimate for 12 rounds.
00:11:03So I know him very well.
00:11:05Had him on the floor.
00:11:06He was the only one to give me credit for the knockdown.
00:11:07He's a resilient guy.
00:11:08He's hard to hit twice with clean shots.
00:11:10It's very difficult.
00:11:11So if you hit him, you have to jump on him.
00:11:13And his hands are deceivingly quick, and that's where he generates the power he has.
00:11:16You fought him when back in 89?
00:11:18Yeah, way back when.
00:11:21Well, when he's on, his opponent is always almost in retreat, beaten to the punch.
00:11:26He can be overpowering, talking about Virgil Hill.
00:11:32Well, he's certainly circling the wagons right now.
00:11:35He's not that offensive guy we saw the last two or three times out.
00:11:38He's back to the old Virgil Hill.
00:11:40Let's see what this guy's got.
00:11:41He's respecting his power.
00:11:43And from what I see, he better respect his power.
00:11:46He's really easy to throw as well.
00:11:47He does for me.
00:11:49Ashley told us he's in the best condition he's ever been in,
00:11:52in spite of the fact he took this fight on just three weeks' notice.
00:11:56Originally, Hill was scheduled to fight number eight rated Duran Williams,
00:11:59but that fight fell through.
00:12:01And when we asked Ashley what he has to do to beat Virgil Hill,
00:12:04he said one word, speed.
00:12:07And he said, my jab is the key, speed.
00:12:10He punches with a thorn, and he looks like he's punching very hard.
00:12:13Bobby, you get that feeling this guy is really not holding back too much?
00:12:17Well, he's stuffing the jab pretty well.
00:12:18I haven't seen any good clean right-hands land,
00:12:20and right now I think Virgil is still the quicker of the two,
00:12:22so his speed is not going to be as big a factor
00:12:24as he might have liked it to be.
00:12:27Well, his nickname is Quicksilver.
00:12:29You saw some of his supporters in from North Dakota
00:12:33wearing those Quicksilver softball shirts earlier.
00:12:36Final seconds of round one
00:12:38in this fight for the WBA light heavyweight title.
00:12:43A little shot got in by Hill.
00:12:45No, very fast.
00:12:46Very fast, Hill.
00:12:47Nice round.
00:12:56Nice to meet you.
00:12:56Very good.
00:12:58How do you feel, Chad?
00:12:59Because all of this is a cakewalk.
00:13:01All right.
00:13:02You can keep going.
00:13:03I want you to use up-jabs in there, too.
00:13:05The jab looks good.
00:13:07Keep your composure.
00:13:08All right.
00:13:10Make sure you keep your composure.
00:13:11Don't pull out what you have.
00:13:12All right.
00:13:13Make sure you keep making the drop.
00:13:15All right.
00:13:15It's just a matter of time before we'll get him out.
00:13:21Lovely.
00:13:22Take it up.
00:13:23Are you listening to me?
00:13:24Keep that a car now.
00:13:25Let that catch your elbow.
00:13:27Don't start reaching for it again.
00:13:29Go on, Chad.
00:13:30Go on.
00:13:30Okay?
00:13:31You're listening to me.
00:13:31Stand there, friend.
00:13:32I'm going to catch him as he's coming.
00:13:33You're caught him with it a couple of times,
00:13:35but the right hand's got to go as well.
00:13:37All right?
00:13:38Don't wait for him too long.
00:13:40You've got a good jab.
00:13:40You've got to use the bloody.
00:13:42All right?
00:13:43You're okay.
00:13:43Keep your right hand into the body.
00:13:45You can't get out of the way with it.
00:13:47Bob Padgett in the corner of Crawford Ashley.
00:13:50Mike Hall.
00:13:51The other face of Virgil Hill.
00:13:52The Hill is managed by the mayor of Bismarck, Bill Sorensen.
00:13:58Interesting.
00:13:59A little moonlighting on the side.
00:14:02He certainly is a big hero in Dakota.
00:14:04I'll say that.
00:14:06Of the two corners,
00:14:07I would have taken Crawford's corner better.
00:14:11He was giving him expert advice on how to catch his jabs
00:14:14and how to go to him.
00:14:15On the other corner,
00:14:16they're telling him how good he's doing.
00:14:17It's a cakewalk.
00:14:18I'd be darned if I'd tell a fighter
00:14:19at the beginning of a dangerous fight like this
00:14:21that it's a cakewalk.
00:14:22Generally speaking,
00:14:23you wouldn't want to give your fighter
00:14:24that much overconfidence,
00:14:25but maybe they know their fighter better.
00:14:27But it's the first round.
00:14:28I mean, it's 11 to go.
00:14:30What cakewalk?
00:14:31The thing's not even in the oven yet.
00:14:34Ashley told us yesterday,
00:14:35I'm not going to knock him out,
00:14:37but it wouldn't surprise me if I did.
00:14:38People don't realize how fast and hard I can't punch.
00:14:41He calls it the shock factor.
00:14:44He told us he didn't think Hill has that much speed.
00:14:46He's got a good jab,
00:14:47but he says my jab is the key.
00:14:50Well, he's wrong there.
00:14:51He's being outspeeded.
00:14:52And by Virgil as he outspeeds
00:14:54almost anybody he fights.
00:14:56And in terms of starting out,
00:14:58Ashley said,
00:14:58I'll see what he does and react to him.
00:15:00Bobby,
00:15:00is that just something fighters say
00:15:02because they don't want to give out
00:15:03any strategy secrets,
00:15:04or do they truly believe it?
00:15:05I think a lot of times fighters believe that they like to go off what the other fighters do.
00:15:09Myself,
00:15:10I like to have a game plan and say,
00:15:12if he does A,
00:15:12I'm going to adjust to B, C, and D,
00:15:14and then I'm going to try and implement etc, etc,
00:15:16based on what he does,
00:15:18based on what I do,
00:15:19because you have to have a game plan,
00:15:20but some guys don't like to
00:15:21predetermine what they're going to do with driving them crazy.
00:15:24What exactly are the first things,
00:15:26like 1, 2, 3, A, B, C,
00:15:28the things you look for when a fight begins?
00:15:30There are exactly three things
00:15:31that I want to find in a fight immediately.
00:15:32I want to find out what kind of chin the guy has.
00:15:34Can he take what I dish?
00:15:35Just how hard does he punch?
00:15:36Whether I get it in the gloves or shoulders or the chin,
00:15:38hopefully not the chin,
00:15:39and I want to be able to gauge his speed.
00:15:41Those are the things I look for first.
00:15:43Round two continues.
00:15:47This is for the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship.
00:15:49It's been pretty quiet.
00:15:51Well, I don't know if he found out about the other two,
00:15:53but one thing he's found out, boy,
00:15:54is he's not as fast as Virgil will.
00:15:57Speed on your three counts is what he's losing here.
00:16:02I don't know if he's been hit hard enough
00:16:04to understand how hard Virgil will punch it,
00:16:06but...
00:16:07Crawford Ashley.
00:16:15Unrated by the WBA,
00:16:17former British Light Heavyweight Champion.
00:16:19Out of Leeds, England,
00:16:21about 200 miles from London.
00:16:23His second world title shot.
00:16:27Less than 20 seconds round two.
00:16:29He lost to Michael on April of 93
00:16:31for the WBA Superbiddleweight title.
00:16:32He actually started his career as a light heavyweight.
00:16:35Went down to Superbiddleweight.
00:16:36Now he's back to light heavyweight.
00:16:40Uphand there by Hill that got in
00:16:42to the shoulder of Ashley.
00:16:56How do you see it?
00:16:56Real nice.
00:16:57Good.
00:16:58I got one.
00:16:59I got one.
00:16:59Ready?
00:17:00All right.
00:17:01All right, Virgil.
00:17:07I want you to be busy, okay?
00:17:09I want this fiends from you in front of him.
00:17:11You've got a fiend, okay?
00:17:12Make him around to you and then you go, okay?
00:17:15Let's take a look at this looping left hand
00:17:19that he'll throw.
00:17:20Whoop.
00:17:20I don't think there's enough power to that.
00:17:23Let's take another.
00:17:24You take it by me.
00:17:25Well, when you look at it, it's a speed counter.
00:17:27He's just looking to get the markets to make you aware.
00:17:29When you throw something, here I come.
00:17:31It's not a power punch.
00:17:32It's kind of a little more of a slap there,
00:17:33but it's quick.
00:17:34It has a purpose.
00:17:35Let me let you know that when you fire and miss,
00:17:36I'm going to hit you.
00:17:37Well, he got that message at that time.
00:17:39That was delivered home perfectly.
00:17:44That's a typical Virgil Hill type of thing.
00:17:46When you miss him, he's going to make you pay.
00:17:47Maybe not the hardest, but he's going to make you pay.
00:17:49That's why he's considered such a good boxer,
00:17:51such a good defensive boxer.
00:17:53Round three scheduled for 12 for the title.
00:17:58Hill said he'll fight McCallum or IBF champion Henry Mass.
00:18:01He said it's always been our goal,
00:18:03our dream to unify the title.
00:18:05It's not up to the fighter.
00:18:06It's the promoter who dictates the terms.
00:18:08He also said everyone feels that we're the ones
00:18:11who decide to fight in North Dakota all the time.
00:18:13It's not us.
00:18:14It's the promoters in the network, says Virgil Hill.
00:18:17Well, I'll tell you, Steve,
00:18:18I was in North Dakota when I did fight him.
00:18:20The nicest people I have ever met
00:18:22wherever I have fought by far in North Dakota.
00:18:25Well, I'll echo those thoughts.
00:18:26I'm sure Ferdy will, too.
00:18:27We had a great time when we went down there over the summer.
00:18:32Tremendous support.
00:18:33It's almost like a college rah-rah atmosphere backing Hill up.
00:18:36It's like going to see Barry McGuigan in Ireland,
00:18:38one of the places where you can't hear yourself thinking so loud.
00:18:43So I don't blame him for wanting to fight that.
00:18:46Crawford Ashley's not seeming to understand how to solve this problem.
00:18:49He's still waiting.
00:18:50That's not what his corner wanted him to do.
00:18:52He wanted him to initiate the jab.
00:18:54He's reacting to Virgil Hill's jab.
00:18:56He's not fast enough to do that.
00:19:00Pop, pop, come on.
00:19:01Come on, throw it.
00:19:02Nothing.
00:19:03He's just looking.
00:19:04All of his jab seem to be in a counter position.
00:19:06Yeah.
00:19:06He's always in a counter posture.
00:19:07He wants to counter with a jab and never leave with a jab.
00:19:10If he doesn't leave with a jab,
00:19:11he's going to have a difficult time getting their right hand home.
00:19:19Both throwing punches simultaneously.
00:19:22Now there's that quick looking left jab by Hill.
00:19:27Virgil uses a lot of feints and head movements,
00:19:29and you just never know when it's going to fire off.
00:19:31The other guy's standing straight.
00:19:32I mean, he's just like waiting for that jab to come.
00:19:35He doesn't seem to know how to stop.
00:19:36I'm a Callum Hill would be a very tasty, interesting fight.
00:19:50I love Mike McCallum.
00:19:51I just think he's one of the greats.
00:19:54Because of his own managerial problems,
00:19:56he's not considered one of the great, great fighters,
00:19:57but he could have been.
00:20:00The man from Jamaica now makes his home in Brooklyn, New York.
00:20:04He's also in attendance tonight.
00:20:06It's like a who's who of boxing on hand here tonight in the state line.
00:20:09Oh, right hand by Ashley.
00:20:13Well, he's tried to get it home a few times,
00:20:14and now he's finally found his mark,
00:20:16but it's done no damage, so we'll see if he follows up.
00:20:19Doubling up on the jab is Hill.
00:20:24Another right hand there.
00:20:25That one glanced a little more,
00:20:26but he's starting to find a little bit more of the range.
00:20:28At least he's throwing it, Bob.
00:20:29And throwing it hard.
00:20:31Carver's under both eyes starting to swell up
00:20:34from all these jabs that he's eating.
00:20:36That thing sounds like a cap gun to you.
00:20:39That's the most annoying 10-second whopper I ever heard.
00:20:44And we were talking about Mike McCallum,
00:20:51and there he is, very composed.
00:20:54The WBC light heavyweight champ off his victory over Carl 9-1-1 Jones
00:20:59on the undercard of Ben McCallum late February.
00:21:03The 30-something, Mike McCallum, an interested spectator.
00:21:07Will he eventually get into the ring with Virgil Hill for a unification fight?
00:21:12Hill says he's not judging McCallum,
00:21:14although Hill told us McCallum thinks he is.
00:21:18Well, he better get his body in shape
00:21:20because this guy is a body snatcher.
00:21:23I mean, he will take you.
00:21:24Now, let's take a look at that.
00:21:26Here's Ashley's little attempt.
00:21:28There was a right hand.
00:21:28It went right at the eye and had enough force to it.
00:21:32But, you know, one good punch doesn't save you the round.
00:21:35And at the end of that round,
00:21:37I thought his neck was broken the way he got.
00:21:38He ate a jab at the end of it did Crawford.
00:21:40Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:21:47And round four is scheduled for 12.
00:21:51As that last round ended,
00:21:52Crawford went to his corner.
00:21:54He's bleeding from the nose.
00:21:55So those hills, excuse me,
00:21:57those jabs of Virgil Hill are getting to the mark.
00:21:59Well, he's got a hill to climb.
00:22:00Oh, you see both eyes are slung in the knee.
00:22:06On the Crawford.
00:22:10And you go to sleep on Virgil,
00:22:11and he'll put jabs right in your stomach.
00:22:13I mean, you've got to have an acrobat's nerve to do that
00:22:17because you are exposed when you put that jab down there.
00:22:20You know, Virgil's very quick,
00:22:21and if he gets you thinking upstairs,
00:22:22you put your hands up, your stuff's in your belly,
00:22:24you bring your hands down,
00:22:25and he puts it back up in your face.
00:22:27Very smart box.
00:22:28He'll want to work in Australia
00:22:31in 91 with Johnny Lewis and Jeff Fenwick
00:22:35to work on his aggression and his power.
00:22:38Departed company with trainer Freddie Roach
00:22:40after the Hurts fight was guided early on
00:22:42by one of the greats,
00:22:44the venerable Eddie Fudge.
00:22:46He's got a lot of good schooling.
00:22:48He certainly learned his lessons well.
00:22:50There's nobody better to teach it than Eddie Fudge.
00:22:52If you can just learn what Eddie Fudge teaches you,
00:22:57you will be a champion.
00:22:58Part of the problem with the lack of popularity
00:23:01all the way around for Virgil Hill
00:23:02is that he's a smart boxer.
00:23:04He doesn't take risks.
00:23:05Sometimes the fans don't appreciate exactly what he's doing.
00:23:09Only a fighter that knows what it takes
00:23:10would appreciate him as well as he deserves to be.
00:23:12Now, the first part of this fight,
00:23:15like the first part of the last fight,
00:23:17the contender can say,
00:23:18well, let me see what he's got.
00:23:19Let me do it.
00:23:19But when it gets around to six or seven,
00:23:21he has one around,
00:23:22it's about time to say,
00:23:23let me change, let me attack here.
00:23:25This is for the championship.
00:23:26Let's see if Crawford gets a little matter
00:23:29and let's see if he can get serious.
00:23:32Let's see if he can get down and fight here.
00:23:34At the end of the third round,
00:23:35he's starting to throw some right hands
00:23:36and try to mix it up and force a frantic pace,
00:23:39but he fell back into that I'll wait and see.
00:23:42I don't know why.
00:23:43You take on a different attitude, Bobby,
00:23:45when you take a fight late like Ashley did.
00:23:47He took this on three weeks' notice.
00:23:49You know, Steve,
00:23:49I've never taken a fight on three weeks' notice.
00:23:51I actually did take one on a month's notice,
00:23:53which bothered me a little bit,
00:23:54and I broke my hand in that fight,
00:23:55but it does sometimes worry you
00:23:56that you may not have done this or that.
00:23:58You may take a little different posture early,
00:24:00so we'll see.
00:24:09Good jab there by Ashley,
00:24:12but Virgil answers, and he doesn't follow up.
00:24:14Ashley not following up with a combination.
00:24:16And Virgil just landed a double jab
00:24:18before the guy, the Ashley got off the shot.
00:24:21I mean, Virgil's just outflicking him.
00:24:22He's outspeeding him.
00:24:23He's very fast.
00:24:25I mean, he is a beautiful fighter.
00:24:26Maybe it's just, he's outclassed him.
00:24:29That's the word I'm stumbling around to find.
00:24:33Less than 15 seconds in round number four,
00:24:36the 31-year-old Virgil Hill.
00:24:4039-1, 20 knockouts.
00:24:43Looking to retain his title.
00:24:45Look out, Hill says,
00:24:47you didn't hurt me, but you never know.
00:24:56How do you feel, champ?
00:24:57Good.
00:25:03Come on, come on.
00:25:06Now you're going to cancel.
00:25:08Huh?
00:25:10Two more points.
00:25:11You're welcome.
00:25:18Well, it's a kitten.
00:25:21I'd take a look at this.
00:25:25See, that's kind of a slippage backwards.
00:25:27It's not a punch backwards.
00:25:30Well, look at it over here.
00:25:31You know, he's just off-bound.
00:25:32You can see it.
00:25:33They kind of bang into each other.
00:25:34He's leaning back anyway.
00:25:35And his little pop kind of take that with you, too.
00:25:38I would like to say something, guys.
00:25:39I think I just heard him say,
00:25:41I think my hand's broken.
00:25:43Yeah.
00:25:45Virgil Hill?
00:25:45Virgil Hill.
00:25:46Virgil did what we do,
00:25:47and we don't want the mics to hear.
00:25:48He leaned into his trainer and whispered in his ear.
00:25:50He said it first.
00:25:50I think my hand's broken.
00:25:51I said, what?
00:25:52And then he leaned in to whisper it,
00:25:53which confirmed it to me.
00:25:54If that's the case,
00:25:55then he's got a load to go
00:25:59because it's a long, long fight from 5 to 12.
00:26:01Well, it's only around 5,
00:26:03as we'll keep a very close watch on this now.
00:26:07But he does have a four-round head start
00:26:08because I gave him all four in the first round.
00:26:10Yeah, definitely.
00:26:13But if it's his right hand,
00:26:14he's not in such a bad shape
00:26:15because I've seen him fight a whole fight
00:26:17with just his left hand.
00:26:18Well, he is known as a one-armed fighter
00:26:20that he only uses the left.
00:26:23We just, we're not sure which hand he is referring to.
00:26:28Unfortunately, I've had the displeasure
00:26:30of breaking both hands,
00:26:31left in one fight and right in another.
00:26:33And believe me when I tell you,
00:26:34it's a semi-stranded feeling.
00:26:36You use it because your mind and body is set to use it.
00:26:38He'll throw the punches, but it will hurt.
00:26:41It's going to be immense pain.
00:26:42We'll see if when he'll throw,
00:26:44he grimaces.
00:26:45We'll keep a close watch
00:26:46as a little blood on the nose
00:26:49of Ashley who has been receiving
00:26:51most of those jabs right there on the nose,
00:26:53on the nostril,
00:26:54so a little trouble inside the nose.
00:26:57Well, no, really gunning with the left.
00:27:00He hasn't thrown the right yet.
00:27:02And even if he throws it,
00:27:03it's not going to be with a lot of power
00:27:04if he's broken.
00:27:05I think we're getting some clues here.
00:27:09He's a slow-paced fight.
00:27:10You got two boxers, long-range,
00:27:12quick hands, good reflexes
00:27:14trying to get out of each other's way
00:27:16while hitting each other.
00:27:17And defensive fight continues to go
00:27:19primarily with the left,
00:27:21which leads us to believe
00:27:23he has injured the right hand.
00:27:25Yeah, injured is the right word.
00:27:26You won't know it's fraction until you take an x-ray,
00:27:28although a boxer pretty well has a good idea.
00:27:30You have a good idea, Bobby,
00:27:31when yours were broken,
00:27:33I mean, actually fractured,
00:27:34or when they were just hurting?
00:27:35Uh, the right hand,
00:27:36I disliked both metacarpals.
00:27:37The left hand,
00:27:38I cracked the first knuckle,
00:27:39so I knew they hurt.
00:27:40That's all.
00:27:41He just went with the right hand.
00:27:43That's the first right he's thrown this round,
00:27:46Virgil Hill,
00:27:47and continues with the left now
00:27:49as round five continues.
00:27:58So Hill apparently with a damaged right hand
00:28:00continues to fire away with the left,
00:28:02that little pitter-patter with the right.
00:28:04Yeah, that was nothing.
00:28:05Many times when a fighter's on a defensive posture,
00:28:08he'll keep his hands open to pick punches,
00:28:10and then when he fires,
00:28:11good right hand.
00:28:11Yes.
00:28:12Then when he fires,
00:28:13he doesn't close his hands,
00:28:14and that's how he can break.
00:28:15Crawford Ashley breaking through.
00:28:18Well, if Crawford gets the idea
00:28:20that this guy's fighting a one-handed fight,
00:28:22it's going to be something.
00:28:23That's the thing.
00:28:24With Hill, you don't know,
00:28:25because he normally fights
00:28:26with only the left anyway.
00:28:27A lot of people can say,
00:28:29there's a good left by Hill,
00:28:31making the most of the one hand.
00:28:32Final 10 seconds of round five.
00:28:40A very weak right hand.
00:28:43Nothing right in.
00:28:44See, oh, he pulled it back.
00:28:45Held up.
00:28:48Well, interesting development.
00:28:55Nice deep breath.
00:28:57Come on.
00:29:08Burge.
00:29:09Dammit, come on.
00:29:10Let's go.
00:29:10Get tough.
00:29:12All right.
00:29:14Let me see that toughness, all right?
00:29:16Dammit.
00:29:17I'm sucking up.
00:29:18We, we're going to do it.
00:29:21We're going to Sparkle.
00:29:21We'll bring that right hand there behind it, okay?
00:29:23Left hand is tiny, all right?
00:29:25Okay.
00:29:26Take him in the body,
00:29:27take him in the body,
00:29:27so you can turn it over,
00:29:28come back with the hook.
00:29:29Okay.
00:29:30All right?
00:29:30Definitely.
00:29:31Ah.
00:29:33Do you think to get to the bodies,
00:29:35the other body?
00:29:35Boom.
00:29:36and basically down the fight left
00:29:45hand and fight and then just suck
00:29:47it up no mention he'll not
00:29:50mentioning the damaged hand and
00:29:51so much for the cakewalk as we
00:29:54headed around six we're from
00:29:56cakewalk to suck it up and get
00:29:58tough boy that's a big move that
00:30:00is a dramatic change the
00:30:05intensity level picks up
00:30:06considerably in the hill corner
00:30:07with that left jab with all
00:30:10fairness to anybody's corner they
00:30:11do what they know they need to do
00:30:13to motivate their fighters so I
00:30:15would never second guess as the
00:30:19general you know you don't want a
00:30:21guy that's just to think he's an
00:30:22easy but every every fighter's
00:30:25difference some guys want that
00:30:26early there's a little doubling up
00:30:30with the jab by Ashley actually
00:30:34trying to take over the pace here
00:30:37round six stepping it up for ever
00:30:41so slightly moving forward on
00:30:42hill waiting for an opening well
00:30:46if Ashley knew what we knew or we
00:30:48think we know from looking to the
00:30:49corner he would be coming forward
00:30:51and getting right around that
00:30:52left hand but coming from the
00:30:54left nostril of Ashley with the
00:30:56left hand by Ashley best with the
00:30:58right he's eating those jabs oh so
00:31:02flush flooding his nose and making
00:31:03ugly mess out of it he's got to
00:31:05slip that a little bit turn his head
00:31:06to the side pick with the right
00:31:08hand and fire back
00:31:09Ashley looks like a pretty good
00:31:14target there for hill but Ashley
00:31:15coming around with the right hand
00:31:16and missing
00:31:17he's got kind of a whip like motion
00:31:24to his punches his whole body seems
00:31:26to whip when he throws something
00:31:27real hard he turned a nice hook up
00:31:29there missed the right hand he can't
00:31:30seem to get the right hand in
00:31:31Virgil's turning away from it really
00:31:34very well well he said his jab
00:31:36Ashley said his jab would be the key
00:31:38starting to unload with the right now
00:31:39getting on the break and you heard
00:31:45Richard she'll say protect yourself
00:31:47wouldn't be the first guy to get
00:31:52stopped or knocked out or down when
00:31:54a referee said step back right
00:31:56well Ashley's face becoming a bloody
00:31:59mess and you're gonna get some
00:32:04frustration on the part of Virgil
00:32:06Hill because he should be fighting a
00:32:07two-handed fight he knows he's only
00:32:08fighting a one-handed fight even if
00:32:11Crawford hasn't seemed to delineate
00:32:13that fact yet he's haven't seemed to
00:32:14figure out that hey I'm just getting
00:32:16hit with left hands this guy's not
00:32:17throwing right anymore I just got hit
00:32:19with a right-handed mini over there
00:32:20wasn't much on it but there's nothing
00:32:22to it Bobby when you when you get hit
00:32:23with something where that's been
00:32:24zinging in there and all of a sudden
00:32:26it's powder puffing in and he's not
00:32:28throwing it hardly at all
00:32:37he'll continues to go primarily with
00:32:39the left now he unloads the right
00:32:41hand but it was a glancing blow as
00:32:42Ashley managed to duck underneath
00:32:44round six of the books
00:32:50round six of the books
00:32:56that's what I'm talking about
00:33:00that's the way to suck it up
00:33:06that's what I want
00:33:06nice work nice work
00:33:11here it comes nice work
00:33:13beautiful that's what I want
00:33:15how you feel good
00:33:24good come on
00:33:25nice work
00:33:27all right
00:33:34want I want to see
00:33:35from there I want to see you sharp
00:33:37all right don't worry about that
00:33:39shit we'll deal with that later
00:33:40turn that right hand open
00:33:41that's right I'm looking at that one
00:33:44downstairs you're looking at right
00:33:45down here and turn right over
00:33:46okay you know they have a
00:33:53cryptic way of saying things don't
00:33:55worry about that we'll take care of
00:33:56that later means don't worry about
00:33:57your hand it's broken we'll take
00:33:59care of it when we get out of
00:34:00here yeah what do I do being I was
00:34:03always amazed working in corners
00:34:04right here these old guys saying
00:34:05look it's broken ain't gonna get
00:34:06broken any worse is it so bad and
00:34:08throw it
00:34:09I was looking at those guys with
00:34:11amazement my call saying we want
00:34:13to see some meanness out there
00:34:15from you Virgil let's see as we
00:34:16enter round seven scheduled for 12
00:34:18for the WBA light heavyweight title
00:34:20well he's virtually winning the fight
00:34:22with just his left hand I mean the
00:34:23right hand used as a defensive blocker
00:34:25pick punches off parrying with it a
00:34:27few shots with it but nothing hard
00:34:29actually he's got to figure something
00:34:31out sooner or later using it almost
00:34:33as a goalie's blocker pass see now
00:34:36now he's starting to get the idea
00:34:38that hey I gotta come ahead of good
00:34:40shots by by Ashley Crawford Ashley
00:34:43coming on here the seventh round and
00:34:45from the worry in the corner of
00:34:46Virgil from this exhortation of suck it
00:34:48up and do this and do that you get
00:34:50the feeling that Virgil is rather
00:34:52worried about this and again
00:34:54uppercut by Ashley off the
00:34:55combination move right hand landed in
00:34:57the upper cut he's starting to find
00:34:58the range a little bit because he's
00:34:59fighting a one-armed fighter that's
00:35:01why he's fighting the range and if he
00:35:02just could get the message to attack
00:35:03and continue the attack then it would
00:35:04be a different fight and even though
00:35:05he's way behind he's still in this
00:35:10ballgame if he wants to be that hand
00:35:12is broken if it is damaged you got to
00:35:14give a lot of credit to Virgil Hill
00:35:15for showing a lot of hard midway past
00:35:19the seventh round but I don't think
00:35:21you give up a championship because
00:35:22you got a broken hand I think you
00:35:24know you don't want to do that I
00:35:26know you know you don't want to do
00:35:28that you know when you give up a
00:35:30championship because you got a
00:35:31broken hand I think you know you
00:35:33You know
00:35:37Say what doesn't nice right hand just now by virtual Hill
00:35:41He doesn't seem like the Virgil of all completely something must be wrong. We're not sure what it is
00:35:46You're not gonna be sure to get to that. Well, that's when you're gonna be sure whether it's broken
00:35:50But something's bothering him. He's complaining this corner in his corners telling him. Don't worry about it
00:35:54We'll fix it break. That's enough for me. I don't need to know anymore
00:35:58Meanwhile, this is Ashley's best round the Challenger 20 26 defeats one draw 19 knockouts all the way from Leeds England
00:36:07His second world title shot
00:36:12Right hand
00:36:17No privacy after unloading say what I still don't think actually he's done enough to win the round
00:36:22This is best round started out strong started out well, but now he's on the retreat
00:36:26Less than 30 seconds in round seven
00:36:30Action picks up a bit
00:36:33Mate, I don't know baby. Maybe he's done so well and so different from the others and I think he deserves a round
00:36:38But I mean they're still fighting. We still have 13 seconds. Let's see
00:36:45Vital seconds of the seventh round
00:36:48Good left jab by Hill
00:36:52Finishing the round strong
00:36:56You're letting silly jabs get through to you now. Let me just spleen him up a bit
00:37:02Let me just spleen him up a bit
00:37:04Oh, we could expect to come out with that ball
00:37:06Yeah
00:37:06Now, you must keep the right hand up
00:37:08You're catching him quite often now
00:37:10But you're letting him get sneaky jabs through
00:37:12Ones that shouldn't be in you at all
00:37:13You're in the state, son. You're really in it
00:37:14You're in the state, son. You're really in it
00:37:15You're in the state, son. You're really in it
00:37:16And you must put the right hand in a bit more often
00:37:18Bring it over. You're caught into the body a couple of times
00:37:21No, you're okay. Let's take a look at Ashley Ashley has really picked up the pace here
00:37:27And he's doing much much better than he was before
00:37:29I don't think he's still aware that he's fighting a one-hump fighter
00:37:31That that didn't show much Bobby. Well, you know
00:37:33Virgin was using that left hand. That's what he's got to use
00:37:35He's got to use that jab his jab and he's hooking off the jab
00:37:37And there he threw the right hand again
00:37:39Doesn't seem to have a lot of sting on him, but Virgil never had a big right hand
00:37:41So we still can't tell
00:37:43Round number eight. Let's see if Crawford Ashley can pick up where he left off off his finest round
00:37:59They told him to keep the right hand up
00:38:01You're in this fight in the Crawford Ashley corner
00:38:05His eye continues to swell. It's almost almost almost
00:38:09Close his right eye and
00:38:11That's not his luck though. But it's got a loose swelling another big
00:38:15You know with that powerful left
00:38:23Ashley has to react and he'll jab. He's got to react. He's got a step two
00:38:27Even if he doesn't hit him with the first two or three
00:38:29He's got a step two and close the gap and fire on the inside
00:38:33They're looking to go downstairs for the midsection
00:38:35But got nowhere
00:38:39A little more side to side
00:38:45There's that left jab again to the face
00:38:47Right on to the left eye of Ashley continues
00:38:49The board on to that area
00:38:51Excellent move by Virgil
00:38:53Two jabs moved away before the other guy can unload
00:38:55Excellent excellent moves by Virgil Hill
00:38:57He is a technician
00:38:59He is a technician
00:39:01Counter punching by Hill
00:39:05That's his parade mark
00:39:07He'll
00:39:09Crawford's gotta lift that right hand fly
00:39:11Just having a little jab out there not doing ball
00:39:13Big right hand by Ashley
00:39:15He comes right out there
00:39:17Pulls it off
00:39:19He'll say
00:39:21He'll say
00:39:22He'll say
00:39:23He'll say
00:39:24He'll say
00:39:25He'll say
00:39:26He'll say
00:39:27Shakes his head saying
00:39:29I'm all right
00:39:31He got his detention with that
00:39:33And that's what I'll bet you
00:39:35But that is usually when you're hurt
00:39:37Minute 15 to go in round 8
00:39:39He'll take a look at his eye
00:39:40He thinks he's cut
00:39:41Well he does have a little buff there
00:39:42But it's not cut yet
00:39:43I tell you what
00:39:44He's got a little tiny cut under the eye
00:39:46It's a little cut underneath the eye
00:39:47And it's cool and swelling a little bit itself
00:39:49It's like one of those little nicks that oozes his blood
00:39:51Rather than a cut the guss or so
00:39:53But he's got it under there
00:39:54He's got it under there
00:39:55No question about it
00:39:56He got hammered
00:39:57Well he gashed under the left eye
00:39:58Of Virgil Hill
00:39:59The blood streaking down now
00:40:01Here's another hard right hand by Ashley
00:40:03Ashley with blood all over his face
00:40:05Right hand by Ashley
00:40:09Hill's face bloody
00:40:11I'll tell you what
00:40:12Hill's absorbing some clean shots
00:40:13I don't know what's wrong
00:40:16Big round for the challenger
00:40:18Crawford Ashley
00:40:19Trying to take the title away
00:40:24He said let's stand up
00:40:25And he's coming out okay
00:40:26Head down
00:40:27Ah here's a good look at Ashley
00:40:31a good look at Ashley and how he comes on he starts to get really accurate there's the
00:40:57right hand and look at the way Hill falls back that encourages him and he figures well he's got
00:41:01this guy on the way and so he flails way he didn't collect that many punches but he did more than he
00:41:07had previously Bobby yeah you know you see it he gets through with the right hand finally it wobbles
00:41:11here a little bit didn't look like a tremendously powerful shot but it get him it got him brave stay
00:41:16brave now he put him right back in this fight especially if we gave him seventh round he was
00:41:20the seventh and eighth round he's in the fight I got him winning six seven and eight so he's definitely
00:41:25in the fight I have him 75 to 77 with Virgil Hill ahead but this thing has changing in its complexion
00:41:32ever since Hill went back to the corner and complained well I have a 78 74 for Hill I have
00:41:36a bigger gap for Hill bigger lead and Crawford still got to work hard now all right round nine
00:41:42scheduled for 12 for the WBA light heavyweight championship you can see the abrasion under
00:41:48the left eye of Virgil Hill quite clearly as the cut man Mike Hall had his work cut out in that
00:41:55corner and it's interesting to note that Hill said am I losing when he went back as if he's not sure
00:42:02he's ahead that's a bad sign yeah he's losing his um performance
00:42:09chance of Crawford from the crowd oh left jabs by Virgil Hill I don't know what you call that last one
00:42:24I was a team former devil don't support like a cat paws he's kind of he sprinks it down yeah
00:42:29yes he's got to pick up where he was get brave again see if he can still get to Hill see if he
00:42:37can hurt Hill he just backing off again he can't do this and let Virgil box from the outside Virgil
00:42:42outside is going to beat him all night long but if he makes it a brawl he's got a chance well to live the
00:42:50outside we'll find out if that's all Crawford Ashley has to offer as Hill comes back with those left jabs
00:42:57another hard left and those punches seem to be picking up more power as the fight wears on well that's what
00:43:05he can do very well jab he cannot jab I think everybody in his division and that's what he
00:43:09needs to keep this title he's really doing a good job this run that left hand is his bread and butter
00:43:15always has been always will take this there by Ashley looking to end it on one punch he was
00:43:24trying that had evil intentions well I'm sure his corner must have told him what you just thought of
00:43:30Bobby go attack right now get this guy out of here because he got very brave and all of a sudden he
00:43:35stopped and he's been watching that left hand come with repeated determination into his face
00:43:40now his lip is bleeding as well as his nose his eye is closing his father then Crawford looks a bit of a
00:43:58mess and more confidence creeping in every minute the Virgil Hill is returning to that early fight form of
00:44:06left left left left left left now he's back on the aggressive and aggressive posture he's looking to come forward and jab
00:44:11right hand by Hill ultra confident now the final second of the ninth round
00:44:17big finish by Virgil Hill what a difference from the last round
00:44:21and a very interested spectator looking on is the body snatcher WBC light heavyweight champion
00:44:33Mike McCallum will he eventually get to fight Virgil Hill
00:44:40and I don't know if I can work just don't get careless full night
00:44:44all right just make sure your hands up high when you pull out
00:44:48all right let's take a look at that jab educated as it is and he throws the right hand which got hurt he landed
00:45:05mostly on the thumb rather than on the flatly but he threw it with a lot of power
00:45:09the key words I heard don't be careless and jab him up and down in the corner of Virgil Hill round 10
00:45:27it is scheduled for 12 for the WBA light heavyweight title and that's about as good of an accurate as
00:45:32prescriptions I've heard jab and don't get killed
00:45:38can Ashley come back and duplicate what he did in round eight
00:45:43I'll tell you what he's gonna need a couple of rounds round eight back to back stacked up and get
00:45:46a knockdown in because I haven't passed the point of returning at all
00:45:53I don't think the scorecards can help him now without a lot of knock
00:45:56it's actually going with the counter punching off the jab of Hill
00:46:15he gets off first here it's Ashley but he misses with the big right
00:46:26the Sealy's there he's trying to jabs he counters he's police making an effort
00:46:31yeah he didn't do anything that last front incredible after such a big round
00:46:34yeah you would have thought that might have exhilarated that his adrenaline going
00:46:37oh right hand by Hill that topped the head of Ashley then a flush on the face left
00:46:43yet two in a row by Hill
00:46:47nice hook to the body by Virgil yeah that was a good one little
00:46:51low row Richard Steele saying keep him up to his borderline
00:46:55now Hill picking it up he is winning this fight one-handed what an admirable feat for Virgil Hill
00:47:04in terrific shape dancing around up on the balls of his feet
00:47:11measuring Ashley up Ashley got in with a left and a missed by Hill
00:47:15see now he didn't follow he lands a nice left
00:47:17Hill misses with a wild left right hand counter should have been right there
00:47:25Ashley backing Hill up
00:47:29but Hill coming right back doubling up on the jab
00:47:31and again and then Ashley mission
00:47:39it's these great legs right on Hill it takes them in and out of danger where the other guy looks
00:47:44like he's screwed into the canvas and he's eating every jab because he doesn't use his legs or anything
00:47:49to get away from the jab you see Hill bouncing up and down oh right hand there by Ashley out of nowhere
00:47:55now he's got to follow he's got to step to it and try and he doesn't
00:48:00wild Mitch there by Ashley is he'll able to duck away
00:48:05Hill is pretty well stalking this right away unless something disastrous happens
00:48:09right hand by Ashley back up Hill
00:48:12and another right hand by Virgil Hill
00:48:15right now he's out gutting his guts digging down he's out digging oh a left hand a left hook
00:48:22by Hill beautifully done beautifully done that's what i'm talking about that's what i'm talking about
00:48:28this way to get tough beautiful
00:48:33all right here comes along
00:48:46come on chance
00:48:49Virgil you got to start turning right over right hand over the top on the inside
00:48:54all right you're right there let's turn it over on the inside
00:48:56all right i'm getting there and be the boss take control now
00:49:04let's get it always help is like
00:49:10come on put it all together this round you sit there to the bit
00:49:21both faces showing the effects of this fight as we head into the championship round it actually comes out
00:49:28i think he got the message from his corner that this fight is pretty well out of reach unless he does
00:49:32something dramatic here landed a nice right hand so he's trying
00:49:36be the boss take control now for the corner of ashley
00:49:41and he is he is trying he's chasing right now
00:49:46virgil's not standing still and obliging him though
00:49:49ashley starts out the aggression here at round 11 but he's getting tagged
00:49:58he'll be very patient
00:50:02look at the way he uses his legs
00:50:06and here it is he's had a hard fight he's hurting it's the 11th round and he's still
00:50:10ripping and bopping around on his legs
00:50:12here's virgil hill great condition using tremendous footwear we saw this against frank
00:50:18tate in his last fight fancy footwork you know hill works hard and we talked about it people don't
00:50:22see what we do and we get up at 5 30 6 37 o'clock when the miles we run the pain to go to the gym
00:50:27here it's paying off because his legs have kept him out of trouble throughout his career but tonight
00:50:31where he had some problems and evidently something might be wrong legs keeping him out of trouble
00:50:35those people told us yesterday they have to hold virgil back from overtraining
00:50:39he is in outstanding condition and it is paying off it's showing here
00:50:49beautiful boxing by virgil hill just the way he uses his head to turn into death
00:50:53he's going to be able and now he got hit by that time good left hand by ashley who has had problems
00:50:59in catching up to him but a pretty good flurry here by ashley he got a couple nice shots up on the
00:51:05inside there he got virgil's attention i don't know if they heard him but ash is coming on
00:51:11he does have his moments
00:51:12but continues to scream for the nose of ashley but he is game i think it's too little too late but
00:51:23certainly in nevada the judges have called me wrong before i've seen it happen
00:51:29now he's doing much better at least when he fights it and he seems to slow down hill
00:51:34and he'll then tries to fight with him instead of keep on moving that's when he can do right
00:51:38but crawford just won't hang on to that game plan he just goes to sleep again
00:51:44it's so difficult to overcome the champion without a knockout unless you win every round
00:51:49that's what ashley's got staring into the face
00:51:52he's gonna have to put hill down if he drops hill in both of these last two rounds
00:51:57i wouldn't even give him a draw because he just gave away way too many rounds
00:52:01as hill got hit in the ribs he looked over and said something to his corner
00:52:04but he'll showing courage here all right crawford ashley by coming back right step back
00:52:12both of them very very game crawford making it look good at least he's he's trying he is
00:52:17oh that's a nice left hook yeah he's coming on
00:52:30how do you feel chan all right all right
00:52:40no i want this last round no nothing nothing careless but i want this last round final round
00:52:46all right don't get careless that's all you got to worry
00:52:52don't let him come on and get to start all right he's ready at all times hands up okay
00:52:56you ready baby hands up watch something to be a lead county all right talk to me out there you
00:53:02look fantastic this is your fight take control of it right now let's do it
00:53:07get it the final words of encouragement in the ashley quarter from virgil hill as they touch gloves
00:53:25nothing careless i want this last round be ready get your hands up and here we go
00:53:29talk the final round for the wba light heavyweight championship and finally ashley's fighting like
00:53:35he knows he can take it oh toe to toe i'll tell you what this makes for a great it makes for a great
00:53:42final round but i don't think burton will need to do this i think his corner should have told him to
00:53:46stick with that other plan of don't take a chance and don't be careless right right he can get hit here
00:53:53by one of those wild shots by crawford ashley right here i think he's putting himself in harm's way i think he has a
00:53:59comfortable lead i could be wrong but i think the corner should recognize that he has a comfortable
00:54:03lead well bobby a lot of a lot of fights have been lost in his last round because you tell a champion
00:54:09with a heart like that to take it easy this guy's got a champion's heart and he got here because he's
00:54:14got this incredible urge to win so yeah we saw meldic taylor lose to chavez because the corners that go
00:54:20out there and win this last round and you saw what happened well there are many many reasons either
00:54:25way but right now this guy is so far behind it doesn't appear he can win but you don't know right
00:54:31well let's see if they can continue this heated pace for the remainder of this last round
00:54:43good shot by virgil hill
00:54:47virgil landed the harder punch and he wobbled ashley he went back into the ropes kind of wobbly
00:54:54hill the aggressor coming forward ashley backpedaling combination oh and a left hand by virgil hill
00:55:01another left hand but virgil hill actually's hurt he's and his legs aren't under he is you can see in
00:55:07his eyes he's hurt momentarily dazed 110 to go in the fight and ashley is exhausted he has no legs he's
00:55:16exhausted another right hand by hill and that's supposedly the damage pass could we have two 12th
00:55:24round knockouts in the same night this is some courageous fighting by hill if he is hurt what a
00:55:32shot by a lot of 50 seconds to go to 12. he's throwing almost purely his left hand every once in a while he
00:55:40throws a right but there's nothing on it but the left is doing terrific oh what a left hand by hill
00:55:48a riveting left they're standing many here in state line the last fight in with just 15 seconds left
00:55:56we have just about 30 seconds left now
00:55:5840 seconds on the clock it ends in furious fashion
00:56:09hill going to the front oh a left hand by virgil hill but ashley remains up final 10 seconds of the fight
00:56:16wild finish what a finish by virgil hill
00:56:23well i've got it 116 112 what do you got bobby i have 117 111 i think virgil did what he had to do
00:56:43yeah we had we had different on one round i think yeah i think we did but i'll tell you
00:56:47i don't understand totally why virgil was so confused that he might actually be behind but i know when i've
00:56:51been in the ring sometimes when you get hit with a few shots you just don't understand that you're
00:56:56really winning a fight well it's nice to be told that you're winning and to be careful because that's
00:57:01what they told him all right an excellent excellent finish by virgil hill well it concludes in dramatic
00:57:09fashion as virgil hill let it all fly in that twelfth and final round and i'm very curious now bobby to
00:57:18find out if indeed hill's hand his right hand was damaged in a gallant effort there also by the
00:57:25challenger crawford ashley big charge by virgil hill at the end of this fight well we'll look at virgil
00:57:34hill's charge this is this is not desperation this is courage and this is a champion's heart
00:57:38this is a man who thinks that it might be in jeopardy of losing his title whether he's hurt or not
00:57:43whatever the problem is going after his opponent with a vengeance and doing what he had to do sucking
00:57:48it up inside digging deeper than himself and getting the job done
00:57:54here you see him on the ropes in the corner the right hand has never been a big punch for virgil but
00:57:59he's still throwing a broker otherwise the left hand wins this fight for him steve the hook the jab the
00:58:04counter hooks that's what wins this fight for him and that might be all he had no knockdowns in the fight
00:58:10virgil hill looking to hold on to his wba light heavyweight championship standing by
00:58:18with the official word is our ring announcer jimmy lennon jr ladies and gentlemen after 12 rounds of
00:58:27boxing we have a unanimous decision here the score total judge at ringside marcos torres scores about 117 to
00:58:36113 roberto ramirez sees it at 118 to 110 and duane ford scores about 118 to 110 as well all three in favor of
00:58:47the winner and still champion virgil hill well there you have it there's the hill contingent
00:58:58you have it i don't understand the booze steve that's an absolutely accurate decision a smattering of
00:59:04booze from uh the crowd here so virgil hill victorious via unanimous decision to retain his
00:59:10title i tip my head the crow but actually before the game and valiant fight he did what he had to do
00:59:14he did his very best he gave himself a chance but just not the better man tonight all right bobby so
00:59:19here in the star of the desert arena in stateline nevada ready for post fight reaction here's the fight
00:59:24and if there's a shocker tonight is the fact that we picked up you hurt your hand we thought it was
00:59:28the right hand you tell us which one left hand you really think you fractured your left hand oh yeah
00:59:34every time i jab with it i feel a sharp pain go up my arm into my shoulder so that truly makes this an
00:59:39awesome fight because if you were using your left that's all you were using it was broken or at least
00:59:44hurt that's really tough how to take away from the power first of all i give thanks to my lord and
00:59:48savior jesus christ thought everybody back in pleasantville california and north dakota well
00:59:52you were fairly well ahead and you you kept saying am i ahead did you have any doubt that you were in
00:59:57no but you know you never know what the judges are thinking you know i just use that so they can
01:00:01tell me to push a little harder or start the box whatnot well but you absolutely sure it was you
01:00:06i find that amazing yeah well that's what i think well you certainly used it yeah you might have to
01:00:13fracture in every fight because because that's terrific and uh thank you very much virgil and
01:00:18ashley ashley who wants to go away too long actually that was a courageous performance did
01:00:27you think at any time you had him in trouble one round was really you looked like you had him in
01:00:30trouble no i just tried too slow to start off too slow his arms was very quick and i just couldn't get
01:00:36off you want you want to get a big surprise his left hand was broken from the third round on
01:00:43from the first round how about from the third round he said from the third round he felt it
01:00:48cracked and that's that's really exceptional to see a fighter fight that left hand of the fight
01:00:53with something broken yeah yeah the guys um what can i say i put my heart out and i'll be back
01:01:01all right you did bite your heart out and it was an excellent show thank you very much
01:01:07the unification here obviously we have our man sneaking up on you from behind the body snatcher
01:01:13michael mccollum and uh what do you think i think it's going to be a unification match of course the
01:01:17body snatcher got a date on on june 16th with uh tio the fabricio tco tiozo and when he comes through
01:01:24that uh then i think it's inevitable that they should meet because i was just looking at the
01:01:29excellent show that the bodies that you put on the last time here on showtime it was just so superb
01:01:34so wonderful that if he fights that kind of fight i don't think there's nobody out there can be able to
01:01:38beat him and so we're going to see if he can do duplicate that first of all you got to get by tio
01:01:43though and then we go on for virgil here for a unification because he deserves it he's been
01:01:47fighting a long time he deserves his just recognition for the great talent that he is
01:01:51well perhaps one little sentence from you i don't know what do you think today this man brooke his left
01:01:56hand and what a left-handed fight what do you think like i said virgin is a great fighter and um
01:02:00i lift my hat to you but i'm the greatest leader who is in the world thanks don
01:02:03you're more than welcome body snatching i want to say i want a couple of men uh crawford ashley for
01:02:09putting on a superb performance he really worked hard tonight but we're going to have the best shows
01:02:13here on showtime as we continue to do so i'm looking forward to the bodies that you're putting on a
01:02:17superb performance when he goes to france to fight uh fabrizio tiozo and in the winning of that
01:02:24unification here we come virgil get his chance to get his hand heel and we'll have another exciting
01:02:29and provocatively beautiful show on showtime thank you don and now back to steve at ringside
01:02:35all right thank you ferdy that is astonishing to realize now after ferdy chats with the champion
01:02:42virgil hill that it was actually his left hand that he thought he broke and not his right hand it makes
01:02:48it even that much more courageous now let us go back to the end of round four we're going to
01:02:54a eavesdrop in the corner of virgil hill and here's what he said how do you feel champ good
01:03:24all right he whispered into his trainer's ear i think my left hand is broken at the very moment
01:03:33it happened we couldn't really make out it was kind of inaudible he couldn't really hear that it
01:03:38was his left hand we thought it was his right hand because of the way he was fighting i didn't make
01:03:43that assumption because i know roger is not a big punch with the right hand i didn't assume that it was
01:03:46his right hand quite actually the odds of it being his left hand were much better because that's the
01:03:51and he used most of all that's when he punches the harsh with and if it was his right hand he won
01:03:55this fight even better he also whispered it very very very quietly so not too many people could pick
01:04:00up on it with the microphone right there so interesting all right on each edition of showtime
