00:00All right, we're back and ready now for the main event between Shane Mosley and John Brown,
00:06rejoining us at ringside, Larry Merchants.
00:09And Larry, although John Brown is no slouch, good fighter who thought he had won a decision
00:14against Manfredi last year, but wound up on the losing end of that one.
00:18Mosley's an overwhelming favorite to score his eighth consecutive title defense.
00:23He's had knockouts in all of the other seven, was the fighter of the year last year.
00:26Why, at what seems to be the height of his success, is he announcing that he's leaving this division
00:32and going up to the more anonymous 140-pound weight class?
00:36It's biology and economics, Jim.
00:39The biology of it is this.
00:43Shane Mosley finished his amateur career at 139 pounds, junior welterweight.
00:50Seven years later, he is still fighting at the lightweight level, 135 pounds.
00:59If he was an actress, they would say he must be bulimic.
01:03The problem, he says, is he's beginning to weaken himself before every fight.
01:08To show that, he says that when he's at his normal walking-around weight of about 150 pounds,
01:14he can leap up to a basketball hoop and grab it.
01:18When he gets down toward his fighting weight, he can barely touch it.
01:23His legs don't have the spring and strength that he has.
01:27But in the economic part of it, these are the fighters, all of whom have rejected
01:32what would be record purses for themselves to fight Mosley.
01:37And so he's beginning to think, if they won't fight me, I might as well move on
01:42because by the time one of them does agree to fight me,
01:46I might have to weaken myself so much that I won't be at my best to fight them.
01:51In an odd way, Jim, that's John Brown's best hope,
01:54that somehow Mosley has weakened himself enough
01:57for his kind of strength and will to make an impact.
02:01And we have a strong suspicion that John Brown is physically strong
02:05and prepared at 135 pounds.
02:07Maybe he can gain an advantage from this difficulty
02:10that Mosley seems to have had in making weight.
02:13Shane told us he had not eaten a solid meal in three days
02:16coming into his meeting with us yesterday a few hours before the weigh-in.
02:19Let's take a look at the tail of the tape,
02:21which will show you that both fighters weighed in at or close to the limit.
02:24Mosley three years younger than Brown,
02:26a five-and-a-half-inch height advantage,
02:28a nine-inch reach advantage,
02:29and he's gained 16 pounds since the weigh-in yesterday
02:33and will outweigh Brown by eight or nine pounds
02:36as they go into the ring tonight.
02:38Rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Harold Letterman.
02:42The Shane Mosley-John Brown fight is scheduled for 12 rounds
02:45using the rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions.
02:49Jim, in California, we have to point out this rule.
02:51If the doctor does come into the ring in between rounds,
02:55they call timeout.
02:56When the doctor leaves, it's time in,
02:59and the corner gets a full one minute to work on their fighter.
03:02So this is a very important rule, Jim.
03:04Back to you.
03:06All right, Harold.
03:07Thank you very much.
03:07And John Brown, the challenger, will enter the ring first.
03:10Ladies and gentlemen,
03:17in attendance, your ringside tonight
03:19from the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dream Team
03:22and the NCAA champion Michigan,
03:25how about a hand for number 33,
03:27Irvin Magic Johnson.
03:29Irvin Magic Johnson.
03:59and putting himself through a paramilitary routine
04:03concocted by his rather unusual guiding trainer, Malcolm Perkins.
04:08It involves everything from eating raw sand crabs and insects
04:12to playing war games
04:13and being attacked in the dark
04:15by various cronies of Perkins who are jiu-jitsu practitioners.
04:20Didn't we go through this act last week in Manchester, Jim?
04:24With another guy named Paul Engel.
04:25Paul Engel, also one of those guys
04:28who tries to toughen himself up
04:29for the hard blows ahead.
04:32Taking Army training
04:34and jumping into the cold Atlantic Ocean
04:36and living out on the moors.
04:38I thought all the eccentrics were in Britain.
04:41I'm glad nobody thinks that that stuff would help broadcasters
04:43to do a better job.
04:48I think broadcasters prepare best by eating bonbons
04:51and lying on their back watching NFL Draft Day on ESPN.
04:55And here's a closer look
05:00at the Eastern Beast, John Brown.
05:03Raised in eight foster homes as a young man
05:06and has made something of himself in boxing
05:08and during his survival training this year
05:11wrestled a crocodile.
05:13But I must add that the crocodile
05:15had its jaws wired shut.
05:21Which would be the equivalent
05:23of fighting Shane Mosley
05:25with Mosley having his hands tied
05:27behind his back, right?
05:30And he won't.
05:33Shane Mosley grew up in Pomona, California
05:36about an hour's drive away.
05:38So he has many family members and buddies
05:43in the crowd tonight.
05:45Here's Sugar Shane.
05:50Coming in with all of Pomona in the picture.
05:56I happened to sit back in the
05:58among the spectators about an hour ago
06:01and some guy came up to me and said
06:04I'm from Pomona and I want you to know
06:06that he's the nicest kid around,
06:09plays with my youngsters.
06:11There's just nothing negative
06:12about this Shane Mosley.
06:20Well, and he's certainly as polite,
06:23as well-spoken, as well-mannered
06:26as any fighter we deal with
06:28on a personal level.
06:29You saw his father Jack behind him.
06:31His father doesn't think he should
06:32outgrow the lightweight division, incidentally.
06:34He doesn't think that it will be
06:37any easier for him to get fights
06:39at 140, especially if he doesn't own
06:42any kind of a championship belt.
06:44Well, the big name at 140 is Costa Zoo.
06:48And if you're Costa Zoo,
06:49you certainly aren't going out of your way
06:50anytime soon to fight Shane Mosley
06:52unless your feet get put to the fire.
06:55Close a look.
06:55Mosley was the fighter of the year
06:57by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
07:01And his 94% KO rate
07:03is the highest ever for a champion
07:06who's had as many as 30 fights.
07:0829 knockouts and 31 fights.
07:10Let's go to Michael Buffer.
07:13Ladies and gentlemen,
07:14from Fantasy Springs Casino
07:16here in Indio, California,
07:18home of the Cavazan Mission Indians,

07:49Vice Chairman Cal Soto.
07:51Our physicians at ringside
07:52are Dr. Howard Baer
07:53and Dr. Paul Wallace.
07:55Timekeeper and counting
07:56for the knockdown seconds,
07:58Debbie Garcia.
08:00The three judges assigned
08:01to score this bout
08:02on a 10-point must system
08:05will be Robert Byrd,
08:07Gerald Motts,
08:09and Lee McCowan.
08:10And when the bell rings,
08:12your referee in charge
08:13of the action,
08:14Pat Russell.
08:16And now, ladies and gentlemen,
08:17for the sold-out,
08:18standing-room-only crowd
08:20in attendance here
08:21at Fantasy Springs Casino
08:23and the millions
08:24watching around the world.
08:27Ladies and gentlemen,
08:29let's get ready to rumble!
08:40Introducing first,
08:41fighting out of the red corner,
08:43wearing black and weighing in
08:45at 134.25 pounds.
08:48He brings a professional
08:49to the ring
08:50with 19 victories
08:51and 24 vouts.
08:53Ten of those by knockout
08:55with five losses.
08:56But he has proven
08:57his worthiness
08:58as a challenger
08:59with his upset knockout
09:00of former world champion
09:02Gabrielis.
09:03Ladies and gentlemen,
09:05from Atlantic City,
09:06New Jersey,
09:07here is the former
09:08USBA champion,
09:10the challenger,
09:11the Eastern Beast,
09:13John Brown!
09:15And his opponent,
09:23waiting out of the blue corner
09:24across the ring,
09:26wearing black and cream
09:27and weighing in
09:28at 135 pounds.
09:31A perfect professional record
09:32consisting of 31 bouts,
09:3531 victories,
09:3729 by knockout,
09:38and he is included
09:40by many as
09:41pound for pound,
09:42one of the best in the world.
09:44Ladies and gentlemen,
09:46from Pomona, California,
09:48presenting the undefeated
09:50IBF lightweight champion
09:54of the world,
09:56Sugar Shane Mosley!
10:01John Brown says he's going to have
10:16to walk through the super shots
10:30to get to Mosley.
10:33Good luck to him.
10:35Shane Mosley has been frustrated
10:37by what he thinks
10:39is the refusal
10:40of West Coast media
10:41to pay attention to him.
10:43Shane believes
10:44that if you're not
10:45Oscar Della Oya,
10:46West Coast media
10:47don't pay any attention
10:48to you
10:49and don't give you
10:50the credit you deserve.
10:51Tonight,
10:51the Los Angeles Times
10:52has staffed the fight.
10:54Maybe fighting here
10:55near his hometown
10:56of Pomona
10:56will help.
11:00Already you can see
11:02how difficult a target
11:03that John Brown is.
11:06Mosley is a wonderful
11:07body puncher,
11:08but there's virtually
11:09no body
11:10on John Brown
11:11to punch.
11:12Mosley in his last appearance
11:22against Golden Johnson
11:24knocked Johnson down
11:25several times.
11:27I believe the fourth knockdown
11:28was the one
11:28that stopped the fight,
11:29but most of the knockdowns
11:31offered by vicious body shots.
11:33Same thing
11:34against Jesse James Leha
11:35last year.
11:36He's become
11:37a dedicated body puncher,
11:39and there's the right cross
11:40around the top
11:41after he goes
11:42to the body first.
11:54This is a fight
11:55that could easily
11:57go the distance.
11:59But Mosley could be pushed
12:00to go 12 rounds
12:01for the first time
12:02since he's won the title.
12:04The truly great ones
12:14fire punches
12:15in blurred bunches,
12:16and Shane Mosley
12:18has that capacity.
12:26John Brown
12:27concertedly trying
12:28to work to the body
12:29in round one,
12:30maybe try to take
12:31a little of Mosley's
12:31speed away.
12:34Here's your right hand.
12:36Hold him inside,
12:36forget those hands.
12:37Once you get out.
12:40Stop.
12:45Stop.
12:46Right.
12:46Stop.
12:47Watch your head, John.
12:48Step back.
12:48Right.
12:53You say the valve
12:54very well
12:55could go the distance,
12:56Larry.
12:57A lot of us think
12:58it probably should.
13:00Brown is so tough.
13:02But there's an opportunity
13:03there for Mosley.
13:04If he can leave
13:05John Brown's body
13:06a-moldering on the canvas,
13:07that'll be one of his
13:09biggest accomplishments
13:10so far, I think.
13:12Mosley, I mean,
13:12Brown has never been
13:14down in his career.
13:16With 12 hard rounds
13:17with Angel Manfredi.
13:20And, of course,
13:22beat Gabrielis.
13:23Pete Gabrielis as a substitute
13:30for Jesse James-Leon.
13:33A fighter,
13:34Morales would have had
13:35a much better chance
13:36of beating
13:36some of us believe.
13:38Open it up!
13:38Open it up!
13:39Come on,
13:41come on!
13:41Come on!
13:42Come on!
13:42Come on!
13:43Come on!
13:43Come on!
13:44Continue with the river.
13:49Let's keep that jab
13:52in his face.
13:53The only thing you can do
13:55is try to come in
13:56and make it a dogfight.
13:58As long as your power
13:58possible,
13:59keep the jab in his face,
14:00drop the right hand
14:01in every now and then,
14:02get your rhythm going,
14:03then you can put together
14:04some more combinations.
14:05But the main thing is
14:05keep the jab in his face.
14:08Too short to go to the body
14:09all the time,
14:09but we've got to set that up too.
14:11But if you keep the jab
14:11in his face,
14:12it's going to bring his hands up.
14:13I'm not holding him,
14:13it's only me.
14:13I don't have to get up,
14:15sorry.
14:17Trust me,
14:17I'm scared to death of you.
14:19Scared to death of you.
14:20You're a little bit tented.
14:22You got to punch me.
14:23I'm not even talking
14:24about beating you.
14:25There's only three guys
14:26allowed in the corner.
14:27One of you is going to have
14:27to go down.
14:27What did you say, baby?
14:28I'm trying to get my foot
14:30in front of you.
14:30That's okay.
14:31You got it.
14:31You have to greet.
14:32He's scared of you.
14:34He's scared of you.
14:34I'll be sent in,
14:35seconds out.
14:36I'll be sent out of my way.
14:37Mark.
14:38Same thing.
14:39I'll be sent in.
14:39Just look offline.
14:40The only thing you can do
14:41is come in.
14:43This is a fight
14:57of class versus mass.
15:01Explain.
15:03Well, it's obvious
15:03that Shane Mosey
15:04is the classy fighter here.
15:06He's the Porsche.
15:08He's got the quickness,
15:10the reach.
15:10He can throw the blinding combinations.
15:16Brown just has to somehow
15:18get to him,
15:19wear him down
15:21over a period of rounds.
15:25He's the half-ton truck
15:26in this game.
15:28Come on, J.B.
15:29It's a man.
15:31Brown given credit
15:32by CompuBox
15:33for landing only seven punches
15:35in the first round.
15:35Slow start.
15:37But you heard
15:38Brown's trainer,
15:39Malcolm Perkins,
15:41whispering to him
15:41between rounds
15:42that he felt
15:43Moseley was scared of him.
15:45Yeah, right.
15:47I got a tough punch.
15:49Don't put that on his head.
15:50John, step back.
15:51Step back.
15:51Step back.
15:51Step back.
15:51Come back.
15:52Easy, Johnny.
15:53Easy.
15:55Both hands.
15:56Both hands.
15:57Both hands.
15:57Recently, there was a fight
15:59between Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
16:00and a very, very tough,
16:02rugged South American fighter
16:04who carried him to the distance.
16:06This has aspects
16:07of the same kind of a fight.
16:12You look at the powerful legs
16:14of John Brown.
16:16Strong foundation.
16:17That's the heart
16:18of why he's never been
16:19knocked down.
16:20The guy's lost five fights.
16:22He spent much of his career
16:23as a relatively mediocre fighter.
16:25Has come on
16:25in the last couple of years
16:27partially as the result
16:28of his extraordinary
16:29new training method.
16:30Come on together!
16:31We don't want to fight!
16:33We don't want to fight!
16:34He says when two fighters
16:38get in the ring,
16:39just the two of them alone,
16:41it's lovely.
16:42Is that how he put it?
16:44I don't know if he feels
16:45it's lovely right now.
16:47Nice little left hook
16:48by Mosley on the inside.
16:51Yeah, Brown saying
16:52he can bring thousands
16:54of people from Pomona,
16:55but they won't be
16:56in the ring against me.
16:57And just as we suspect
17:04it might be the case,
17:06Brown in the first
17:07couple of rounds
17:08proving a relatively
17:09elusive target
17:10for Mosley.
17:11Mosley,
17:12who often can land
17:14close to half
17:14his punches or more
17:15the way Manfredi did
17:16in the first fight
17:17tonight against
17:17Ivan Robinson,
17:19landing about a third
17:20of his punches
17:20against John Brown.
17:22And he's virtually
17:24stopped throwing
17:25body punches.
17:26There's just no place
17:27to do it.
17:27He'll throw some,
17:29but he's head hunting
17:30right now.
17:31There's just not enough
17:32body there to try
17:33to use it as a target.
17:34You know,
17:35it looks,
17:35it's like,
17:38to use another metaphor,
17:40it's like a leopard
17:42or a predator
17:42against a turtle
17:43that's angry
17:45and aggressive
17:45but doesn't have
17:47much quickness.
17:51I can.
17:52I can leave,
17:53baby.
17:55I can leave.
17:57Breathe in,
17:57breathe out.
17:59Take that leg over there.
18:02I can lose.
18:03Come on,
18:04hold up.
18:05Give me a towel.
18:06Give me a little towel.
18:07We're glad.
18:08We're darned free.
18:09Come on,
18:09I don't want to hold
18:11it inside.
18:12I want to free
18:13punch your way up.
18:13Okay.
18:14Look at me.
18:14Listen to me.
18:18Listen to me.
18:19How do you?
18:20Everything we practice,
18:21JB.
18:22We're throwing
18:22one punch at a time.
18:23He's so scared
18:24of you.
18:24Look at his eyes.
18:26Both punches.
18:26Please hit him
18:27with the right hand.
18:28Take your time.
18:29Let's work.
18:30Get short.
18:30Set it up.
18:31Do it with your quick
18:31and set it up.
18:33Here's a left hook.
18:34Outpiece in,
18:35seconds out.
18:35That's a punch
18:36that Mosley normally
18:38likes to throw
18:38to the body.
18:41Out of the towel.
18:42Out of the way.
18:43Some pretty good
18:45fighters out
18:45in the audience here.
18:47Next fighter
18:48is Boom Boom Mancini.
18:50I see Vince Phillips
18:51sitting over there.
18:53Oba Khar.
18:55Vince Phillips
18:56in need of another
18:57comeback after his
18:58upset loss
18:59to Deron Millett
19:00on the undercard
19:01of Trinidad-Whitaker
19:02in New York.
19:06Okay, we're getting
19:07free hands now.
19:08Free him up.
19:08Free up those hands.
19:09Punch your way up.
19:09Step up.
19:10Step down.
19:11Watch yourself.
19:11We're not far
19:13from Big Bear
19:14which is now
19:15the training capital
19:16for many key fighters
19:18in the sport.
19:19And a couple
19:19of errors
19:20from Las Vegas
19:21as well.
19:23Free up those hands.
19:33Mosley turned
19:34southpaw momentarily.
19:36Browns corner
19:37asking him
19:38between rounds
19:38please throw
19:39the right hand. Brown saying,
19:41I'm trying to throw it.
19:45Got to find the right opportunity.
19:47Mosley, who earns most of his kudos
19:49as an offensive fighter,
19:51knows how to defend as well.
19:52I saw Mosley mimicking Brown's movements
20:11with the gloves
20:12as he tried to get into a rhythm
20:14where he could time a big shot.
20:16His right hand coming a little bit closer to Mosley.
20:22Mosley reaching with his right hand across the top.
20:27Brown wrestles inside.
20:29They both work to the body.
20:31Referee Pat Russell told both corners,
20:33I don't want to have to pull them apart.
20:36Stop.
20:37Quick.
20:44Good left hook.
20:45Yeah, a little left hook inside by John Brown.
20:47Hold on, let it out.
20:52One of the things Brown does in training
21:12is to lift large men up
21:15and carry them for long distances.
21:17His trainer says at the end of the day,
21:19he makes him pick up everybody who works in his corner
21:22and carry them out of the ring.
21:31Slip.
21:32No punts.
21:35Maybe they should spend more time
21:37working on his punches.
21:39Three-handed.
21:40I got him.
21:40I got punched him.
21:41Stop.
21:42Let's get it back.
21:42Good first three rounds
21:46with not a lot of effective punches landed.
21:48Next Tuesday,
21:49check out the latest Real Sports with Brian Gumbel.
21:52Among the stories,

22:02You'll see how they affect golf's
22:04$4 billion equipment industry.
22:06Real Sports,

22:12Angel Manfredi
22:19joining his wife,
22:21Yvette,
22:21and Woody Harrelson
22:22in the crowd.
22:24No showers here
22:25at this outdoor facility,
22:26so Angel just toweled himself off
22:28and came right over.
22:32Woody getting used to the prize fight.
22:34He's in seconds out.
22:36Round four.
22:37Bam.
22:38Keep it down a hard jam.
22:40You're good.
22:40You're good.
22:41You're good.
22:42You're good.
22:45Jack Mosley,
22:46who calls Sugar Shane Mosley's
22:49boxing-style power of boxing,
22:51trying to convince Mosley
22:53to stand in there
22:54and just throw that stiff jab out there.
22:57Harold Letterman.
22:58How'd you score the first three?
22:59Jim,
22:59three to nothing,
23:0030 to 27,
23:02Sugar Shane Mosley.
23:03I gotta tell you,
23:03you're seeing the versatility
23:05of Shane Mosley.
23:05Now,
23:06John Brown has to rush in
23:07to be effective,
23:08and every time he rushes in,
23:09Shane will hit him with a left jab,
23:11a right uppercut,
23:12a left uppercut,
23:13oh,
23:13he drops that right hand down on him.
23:15But I'll tell you something,
23:16John Brown's fighting an awfully rough fight.
23:18Once he gets inside,
23:19he rides him across through
23:20and leans on him.
23:23Yeah,
23:24and of course,
23:24you can't fight a fighter like John Brown
23:26without worrying about headbutts,
23:28and Shane seems conscious
23:31of wanting to stay away
23:32from Brown's head
23:33as he pile drives his way in.
23:48It'll tie out
23:49to wrestle with a smaller man.
23:50He's throwing fewer than 50 punches around,
24:14and Mosley scores with the uppercut again.
24:17More and more,
24:18it appears that if Shane Mosley
24:19is going to have a chance
24:20to hurt John Brown,
24:21it'll be if he catches him
24:23with one of those uppercuts
24:24when Brown is coming in.
24:34All right,
24:36I got it.
24:37Stop punching.
24:38Great.
24:38Step out.
24:40Shane looks a lot better physically
24:42at his over 150 pounds tonight
24:45than was the case
24:47when we saw him yesterday
24:48just before the weigh-in.
24:49The bones in his face
24:50straining to get through
24:52his starched, dried-out skin
24:55as he had peeled himself
24:57down to 135
24:58for what he claims
24:59will be the last time.
25:01He looked famished.
25:04It's not going to be any picnic
25:05for him to make 140.
25:06his blood.
25:11Somebody is bleeding
25:12because I see it along
25:13the left arm of Mosley.
25:16I don't know where it's coming from.
25:17Pickles in.
25:19Pickles in.
25:21Take a punch inside.
25:27All right,
25:28hand over the top
25:28by Brown.
25:29Mosley falls
25:30with a combination.
25:31Chopping right hand
25:38by Mosley.
25:38The second one landed.
25:40I got it.
25:41Stop punching.
25:42Great.
25:42Step back.
25:44What's coming from
25:47Brown's lip?
25:49Tim,
25:50now you're doing it.
25:51Now you're doing it.
25:51Put that right hand
25:52on him some more.
25:53He don't like that.
25:54Thank you, sir.
25:54Okay?
25:55He's going to start
25:55bringing his hands up
25:56to the body.
25:56It's going to become open again.
25:58Okay?
25:59All right.
25:59You still need to be
26:00off the looks, eh?
26:01He's going to drop
26:02me off the line
26:03so he don't run
26:03his head into you.
26:05Okay?
26:06Make it good.
26:07Make it still.
26:08He's sorry.
26:10I observed him blowing.
26:11Yeah, yeah, he's sorry.
26:12Yeah, I know.
26:12Okay, so you can step it up now.
26:14You can do a little more
26:14power on him.
26:15I mean...
26:16A couple of rounds.
26:18A couple of rounds, chap.
26:19Huh?
26:19Just chap.
26:20Oh, baby.
26:21Johnny, look at me.
26:22Look at me.
26:24Yeah.
26:25You can test it.
26:26This guy.
26:28No, I want to get him,
26:29you know.
26:30I'm trying to get to my
26:31rhythm with it.
26:31Okay.
26:32God.
26:32You're doing it.
26:33Give me that like that.
26:34Sure, baby.
26:35Give me some
26:35banzo toe.
26:37Okay.
26:38You heard the trainer
26:39say to John Brown,
26:40are you content
26:41to just go the distance?
26:42And Brown says,
26:43I'm just trying
26:44to find a rhythm.
26:46What rhythm is that?
26:49Get your rhythm, baby.
26:50Get your rhythm.
26:55Right there.
26:55Bring up those hands.
26:56Here you go.
26:56Moseley throwing hard rights.
27:15Mean intentions on those punches.
27:17Moseley chopping the right hand
27:23to Brown's head
27:24and Brown momentarily wobbled
27:26by that putt.
27:27Yep.
27:29I got to stop right.
27:32Brown's so strong,
27:33you don't expect to see him
27:34knocked down.
27:36Moseley caught him
27:37on the tempo
27:37with the right hand
27:38and Brown is now
27:40regaining his legs.
27:41Jack Moseley asking
27:53his son between rounds.
27:55Hit it some more
27:55with the right hand
27:56and doesn't like it.
28:03I got to stop.
28:04Right.
28:05No.
28:05No.
28:05No.
28:05No.
28:06No.
28:06No.

28:08No.
28:08No.
28:08No.
28:08No.
28:09No.
28:09No.
28:09No.
28:10No.
28:10No.
28:11No.
28:37Another chopping right hand
28:39across the top
28:39and another
28:40James, I see something I've never seen before at the ring.
28:56One of the still cameramen yelling at the side, yelling at the fighters,
29:00okay, punch, punch, every time he gets them in his side.
29:10I need a better punch, I need a better shot than you're giving me.
29:17That's amazing. It is happening.
29:19.
29:21.
29:35Well, if round five was the one in which John Brown was going to find his rhythm,
29:40he found a lot of Shane Mosley right hand.
29:44And Mosley waves to the crowd after a highly successful fifth break.
29:51.
29:55I got it. I got this.
29:57.
30:00John, listen up.
30:01Straight shot, baby.
30:03And finish with the hook, you put his hands out.
30:05But you need your hands up high with a little more head movement coming and laddering.
30:09You can't walk straight in on him.
30:11You got to rock your hands with your hands high and finish with a combination with the hook.
30:16You knew him.
30:17On the body shots.
30:19But I still want you to move your head off the line because he's coming in with his head.
30:23Okay? Set it up with your jab.
30:25Got a hard jab. Tap.
30:27.
30:29Early in the round, the big right hand.
30:31That momentarily wobbled Brown.
30:34Out piece in. Second shot.
30:35Full corner corner.
30:36I don't think Mosley realized that Brown was shaken at that moment.
30:44.
30:49John Brown just has not been able to find a way to connect consistently with the rangier Shane Mosley.
30:54Brown landing in single digits by copy box numbers in four of the five rounds so far, including only seven punches landed in the last round, the fifth.
31:05Now we reach the sixth of a scheduled 12.
31:09.

34:53mosley twenty out of forty seven pretty consistent he was twenty out of forty eight in the preceding round
34:58you heard jack mosley sugar shane's dad saying we're not worried about any knockout we're worried about boxing
35:04in the last two rounds malcolm perkins has moved out of the ring brown lands a right hand across the top

35:43i've been thinking it's like a museum guard trying to mug the mona lisa
35:49our director mark payton asks a pertinent question larry
35:58what round does the crocodile come in
36:00At this point, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
36:06As long as they don't wire its mouth shut again.
36:14Big right hand for Brown there.
36:16John Brown landing two or three of his most effective punches of the bout
36:20here in round seven.
36:22And it figured that somewhere along here,
36:24Mosley would slack off and have a loss of concentration round
36:28because the rounds were beginning to feel the same.
36:37A 10 body shot, good tackle by Mosley.
36:40It seems that when a fighter who is as gifted as Mosley
36:44and he can use so many different tools of the trade,
36:50and he feels probably really frustrated that it isn't there for him here.
36:56This is a survival battle in which his class is telling,
37:01but he can't be the Shane Mosley that he thinks of himself as.
37:05Well, the guy with the highest knockout percentage of any champion in the history of the sport
37:11with more than 25 fights comes home to fight in the desert near his hometown of Pomona.
37:17After more than two years of fighting every fight on the East Coast,
37:20obviously he wouldn't be human if he didn't want a knockout.
37:24And it's going to be very difficult to get one here.
37:26It's like kicking a rock.
37:32Earlier on it appeared that an uppercut would do the damage necessary to break the fight open for Mosley,
37:43but he hasn't thrown as many uppercuts in the last few rounds since he hurt Brown momentarily
37:49with the chopping right hand over the top.
37:51Now Perkins is back in front of John Brown.
37:59Incidentally, here on Boxing After Dark,
38:02we love to show you round card girls,
38:05because you don't see them on World Championship Boxing.
38:10And we need something to break up this fight.
38:14It's the side-to-side wiggle of the ring round card
38:19that makes this an important part of the evening.
38:22Throw him all the way up.
38:23He's tired. Believe me, he's tired.
38:25And he just wants to survive.
38:27Okay?
38:28Here's your shot. Here Ryan. Here Finn.
38:31He's almost down.
38:33I'm looking at his legs. He's so tired.
38:35He can't do shit with you. I'm so proud of you.
38:37Okay?
38:42Malcolm Perkins.
38:44He's so proud of him.
38:46He sounds like a crazy man in that turn.
38:48That's for sure.
38:54Harold, how do you have it through...
38:55Well, that's how you have it, huh?
38:57Yeah, I got it.
38:58Seventh to nothing.
38:59With 70 to 63.
39:01A complete shutout for Shane Moser so far.
39:03But Jim, I taste something.
39:04In that seventh round, Shane Moser didn't throw a lot away.
39:06He was holding this guy off by dropping the right hand on him.
39:10Now, you think that his right hand is starting to hurt him
39:12from hitting him on top of the head?
39:13I'll bet you're right.
39:14I'll bet you're right, Harold.
39:15It's a good way to break your right hand.
39:17Keep hitting a guy on top of the head like this.
39:19Here comes the uppercut again.
39:32You suspect Jack Mosley mentioned the absence of uppercuts too.
39:36Mosley lands punches with much greater frequency when he goes back to throwing the uppercut.
39:49Uppercut with the right hand landed flush.
40:05Brown totally content to survive.
40:11Well, he does go to survival school doesn't he?
40:19No pain.
40:20No pain.
40:21No pain.
40:22No pain.
40:23No pain.
40:24No pain.
40:25No pain.
40:26No pain.
40:27No pain.
40:28No pain.
40:29No pain.
40:30I got a stop punching break.
40:32Step around.
40:33No hits.
40:34No pain Johnny.
40:35Malcolm Perkins yelling no pain.
40:37No pain.
40:38Easy enough for him to say.
40:40Another hard right hand by Moseley turns Brown's head.
40:43And Brown stops punching as Moseley goes to work.
40:48Right hand's hurting John Brown.
40:55Uppercut set it up.
41:00Brown's face becoming a bloody mask.
41:07What a feather it would be in Moseley's cap if he could knock a guy like this out.
41:18Loseley is in danger of getting punched out.
41:27Mosley in danger of getting punched out, and indeed his arms are tired, and it appears
41:44Brown was making out what was Shane Mosley's best round so far.
41:49A 10-8 round.
41:54All right, we're on timeout.
41:59I want you to back off.
42:00I want this doctor to take you in.
42:05Why back off?
42:06Everybody back off.
42:07Let's go.
42:08Back off.
42:09Doctor's got it.
42:11In California, the doctor can stop the fight.
42:15Come on, baby.
42:17Look at him.
42:20Okay.
42:23And the doctor tells Pat Russell to stop it, and Shane Mosley gets his TKO.
42:28And I think that's a really good stoppage because he was starting to take a terrible booting.
42:34There was no way he could win this fight.
42:36He hadn't shown that he could hurt Shane Mosley.
42:40That's why we do it.
42:41Once again, Shane Mosley scores a knockout as a lightweight.
42:46By CompuVox numbers in round eight, Shane Mosley was 54 out of 81, 41 out of 63 power shots.
42:54You saw the uppercut show for the first minute and a half of the round, the right hand show that followed it.
42:59He did everything but put Brown down.
43:02And the referee and the doctor conspired to reward him for it in a fight that clearly Brown wasn't going to win.
43:09He was only going to get punished the rest of the way.
43:11We've often talked in the past, Jim, about a fight that goes late into the rounds.
43:16One fighter has no chance to win the fight.
43:19He hasn't shown that he can hurt the other fighter.
43:21And it's the accumulation of punches in those ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth rounds that can seriously damage a fighter.
43:28So I think the California rule that allowed the doctor to stop the fight worked very well in this instance.
43:35Dr. Paul Wallace advising referee Pat Russell that this one had gone far enough.
43:45And here's the replay of Mosley whacking away at Brown with a kitchen sink assortment of punches in the eighth round.
43:53Uppercuts, left hooks, right crosses over and over and over because of Brown's extraordinarily strong legs.
44:03His will and pride, the fact that he's never been knocked down before, he was able to stay on his feet to take all of this punishment.
44:10But you could well envision the way Brown was going to look at the end of the bout if it were allowed to go another four rounds.
44:20And now let's go to ring announcer Michael Buffer with the official particulars.
44:26Ladies and gentlemen, acting on the advice of ringside physician Dr. Paul Wallace, our referee Pat Russell calls a halt to the bout at the end of the eighth round.
44:36John Brown, John Brown unable to continue your winner and still the undefeated IBF lightweight champion of the world, Sugar Shane Mosley.
44:51And final punch stat numbers from CompuBox will show you Mosley's accuracy landing 114 more punches than Brown, throwing 86 more punches than Brown, 43% accuracy against a tough target.
45:16The accuracy rate was growing as the bout went on.
45:21And of course, in that eighth round, Mosley put on a power punching display that led to these final numbers, 120 out of 232, throwing hooks, crosses and uppercuts to wind up with a connect percentage of 52% on the power shots.
45:37Larry Merchant stands by with Sugar Shane.
45:41Thank you, Jim.
45:42Congratulations, Shane.
45:43Did you think you were going to really get that knockout because he just looked like an awful tough nut to crack?
45:48I didn't think I was going to get that knockout tonight.
45:50I mean, because he was so short.
45:52And it was hard for me to throw punches because, I mean, he's already short.
45:55So when he ducks, he goes down even further.
45:57So I'm like, he's on the ground.
45:59And you couldn't throw your body punches?
46:01I couldn't throw my body shots.
46:02I was like, I wanted to throw them real bad.
46:04But then I said, okay, well, I can't throw punches from up, from standing high.
46:08So I'm going to bend my knees a little bit.
46:11And I'm going to try to get down to his level.
46:13And then the shots started coming in a lot easier.
46:16Were you especially trying to look good before your hometown fans coming back to California?
46:22Well, I wanted to look real good.
46:23But, you know, a guy like John Brown, he runs in, he ties you up.
46:27He's so strong.
46:28He's cut to the ground.
46:29I mean, he made it very hard for me to throw my combinations.
46:31I couldn't get any punches off like I wanted to.
46:33But, you know, I still landed the good shots and finally eventually I come up with him
46:38and call him some good shots.
46:40You rehydrated from 135 pounds yesterday at about 4 o'clock or 4.30 in the afternoon
46:47to 151 pounds before this fight.
46:51Did you feel weak fighting this fight or not as strong as you would like to feel
46:57as you have been saying?
46:59Well, I think I would feel maybe a little stronger if I was a little bigger.
47:04But I still felt pretty good.
47:06I think that I probably gained a little bit too much weight before coming in here
47:09because I started picking up the pace later on in the rounds
47:14because I was actually warming up and losing my weight.
47:17Now, you have promised this would be your last fight at 135 pounds.
47:22If someone came up with a serious offer and one of the fighters who has not been eager to fight you came,
47:30decided he would fight you, would you fight at least one more fight at the lightweight level?
47:36Well, this is something that me and Cedric and HBO are going to have to talk about, you know,
47:42as far as if I was to move up right now or not.
47:45We re going to talk it over HBO and see what we can come up with.
47:48But clearly you don t want to. You want to move up. You ve made that clear, haven t you?
47:52Well, you know, maybe I prefer to. But like I said, we re going to sit down and talk about it
47:57and see what we can come up with.
47:59Thanks a lot, Chang. Congratulations.
48:01We re going to sit down and talk about it and see what we can come up with.
48:03Thanks a lot, Chang. Congratulations once again.
48:06So, we saw some light weights tonight out here in the desert, under the stars, near the mountains.
48:14Had some fun and saw one of the best fighters in the world, Shane Mosley.
48:20Can he move up? The great lightweights of the past, like Roberto Duran and Henry Armstrong,
48:27have jumped right from lightweight to welterweight without a stop at 140 pounds.
48:33Can Sugar Shane Mosley challenge Oscar De La Hoya in an all California fight
48:38that would attract a lot of attention and a lot of viewers
48:42if the fight between De La Hoya and Trinidad doesn t come off?
48:47That's one I'd love to see. Would you, Jim?
48:51Oh, I think a lot of people would like to see that one.
48:54One final footnote on Shane Mosley against John Brown.
48:57Official scores after seven rounds, maybe a little closer than you might have thought.
49:0169, 64, 68, 65, 68, 65.
49:05Meaning two of the judges had found two rounds to give to John Brown.
49:09Where? Who knows?
49:11Plenty of great boxing coming up in the weeks ahead here on HBO.
49:14Let's look ahead to some other programs coming up here as well.

49:33So, of course, no one believes me.
49:35Mulder?
49:36Scully?
49:37Finally, the truth is revealed.
49:44These people don't make mistakes.
49:48David Decovings.
49:50Jillian Anderson.

50:38Oscar needs to beat the veteran Carr in order to keep alive his possible future showdown with Felix Trinidad.
50:44Also, 130-pound phenomenon Floyd Mayweather Jr. defends his title against Goya Vargas.
50:49It's experience versus youth, May 22.
50:52One week later, Felix Trinidad himself tries to keep the future De La Oya fight going as he takes on mandatory number one challenger Vincent Hetway in about coming to you live from Trinidad's native Puerto Rico.
51:04Earlier here this evening on HBO's Boxing After Dark, Angel Manfredi somewhat redeemed himself from the two-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
51:13at the end of 1998 as he pounded out an easy 10-round decision over Ivan Robinson.
51:19Manfredi's vicious body punching throughout the difference in the belt.
51:22And then Sugar Shane Mosley against a tactically difficult, physically tough opponent named John Brown.
51:28The third round landed a series of power punches in the eighth round, highlighted by those right hands that prompted the doctor to stop the fight.
51:36Mosley's 30th knockout victory in 32 wins.
51:40Coming up immediately following our show, stay tuned for Kiss the Girls.
