Roy Jones Jr defends his WBA/WBC Light Heavyweight Titles against Otis Grant on HBO Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00And still to come, a live battle here between Otis Grant, Canadian middleweight star,
00:00:07moving up 12 pounds in weight to take on Roy Jones Jr. as Jones defends his light heavyweight crowns.
00:00:17As we get ready for Roy Jones against Otis Grant,
00:00:21and coming off the performance by Jesse James Lehigh against Sugar Shane Mosley,
00:00:26my question to you, Larry, can Grant do better against Jones than Lehigh did against Mosley,
00:00:32particularly given the fact that Otis is a southpaw fighter?
00:00:35Might be, especially because Jones believes that all southpaws should have been smothered at birth,
00:00:42which was reinforced in his last fight against a southpaw, Lou DelVal,
00:00:47who put him on the canvas for the first time in his career.
00:00:51But Otis Grant has something else going for him.
00:00:53He's a clever, smart fighter, a college graduate, perhaps the only one on the level of this game,
00:00:59the only one I know of anyway.
00:01:01And Jones has detected something else about him.
00:01:03He says if you're trash, he's trash.
00:01:05If you're good, he's good, meaning that he will sink to your level or rise to your level.
00:01:11He's got a lot of rising to do to get to Roy Jones' level, however.
00:01:15Roy Jones continues to grow in stature as a fighter.
00:01:17He's also doing a lot of talking about his sport.
00:01:21And nowadays, George, before and after every fight,
00:01:25Roy Jones talks extensively about the deteriorative damage that is done to fighters over the course of their careers,
00:01:32the beatings that fighters take, how much he wants to avoid that,
00:01:35how difficult it is for him to mete out that kind of punishment in the ring.
00:01:38He talks about this subject.
00:01:40More than any fighter I know, you incidentally are a close second.
00:01:43But we're accustomed to saying that champions have to have a killer instinct.
00:01:45Will it hurt Roy in the ring to be so conscious of the brutality of the sport?
00:01:50No, anything that you can be conscious about in this sport, believe me, it's an asset.
00:01:54He's an intelligent fighter.
00:01:56He understands that he's going to have a life after boxing,
00:01:58and that he probably should prepare himself,
00:02:00and he will prepare himself in the training camp to protect himself from hurt.
00:02:04Great for the game, great for Roy Jones, great for me.
00:02:07More on that a little bit later on.
00:02:09Incidentally, Roy Jones has an unveiled secret in his personal life,
00:02:13a story that we're able to tell you tonight with Roy's courtesy.
00:02:17It's something that's very thrilling and fulfilling for him now as he comes out into the clear.
00:02:25Roy Jones has been keeping a secret.
00:02:28Actually, two secrets.
00:02:29Not deep, dark secrets that could explode into front-page news,
00:02:33but secrets born out of something like love.
00:02:35Roy Jones is the father of seven-year-old twin boys.
00:02:39It's fine now to kind of let the cat out of the bag,
00:02:42but for a little while, I didn't want them to have the problem
00:02:46of dealing with the fact that their father was a superstar.
00:02:48I wanted them to be able to go through life and have a fair chance to get started.
00:02:52The children, Deshawn and DeAndre,
00:02:55actually got their start without Roy in their lives.
00:02:58When first Roy knew of the possibility that he had fathered these boys,
00:03:01they were four years old.
00:03:03It wasn't the first time that Jones had faced questions about fatherhood.
00:03:07To be honest with you, I've had people, you know,
00:03:10to blame stuff on me before that really wasn't mine,
00:03:13and I knew how that was.
00:03:14And so, you know, my mother was very skeptical about kids.
00:03:17Anytime somebody says, well, these kids, this kid is Roy,
00:03:20you know, my mother's like, I'm not going for it
00:03:22because it's happened too many times.
00:03:24So I was like, you know, I told her about these kids,
00:03:27and I said, you know, it's a possibility that they could be.
00:03:29Although Jones himself was resigned to the possibility
00:03:32he could have fathered the children,
00:03:33much of his family shared the obvious cynical view.
00:03:37That Roy was being scammed
00:03:38by a woman looking to capitalize on his wealth and celebrity.
00:03:43I just assumed that it was just another game somebody,
00:03:47some woman was playing.
00:03:48But right away he knew they was his,
00:03:50and I saw a picture of him, and I said,
00:03:51oh, man, he's not lying.
00:03:53He's got two boys.
00:03:54And he always said that he would get him.
00:03:56When I went and saw him, it was so evident,
00:03:58it was so obvious to me.
00:03:59So I was like, man, that's strange.
00:04:02I mean, a cheer just ran straight down my body,
00:04:05all the way from my neck to my toes.
00:04:07It just shocked him.
00:04:08Okay, well, at least they're healthy.
00:04:11I'm glad of that.
00:04:12So now I've got to take over from here and see what I can do.
00:04:15After taking over financial support of his children,
00:04:18Roy pursued custody of the twins
00:04:19and moved them in with his aunt Sharon one year ago.
00:04:23Roy credits their mother for putting the boys' interests first,
00:04:26and together they determined the twins would be best off
00:04:28with their father.
00:04:30I lived with my same aunts for a long time,
00:04:32so I realized that they, being there, can get my care,
00:04:37and they're stable.
00:04:38I don't have to worry about moving them all the time.
00:04:40Their mother can come there and see them.
00:04:41She can come there and get them any time she wants.
00:04:43They try to call me mom sometimes,
00:04:45but I won't let them do that because I'm not their mom,
00:04:48and I want them to understand that I'm not their mom,
00:04:49that I'm their auntie,
00:04:51and that aunties can be responsible
00:04:52and do just what mom do and still be auntie
00:04:55and don't have to be mom.
00:04:57He doesn't live with his children,
00:04:59but Roy has developed a close relationship with them
00:05:01and is an active part of their daily lives.
00:05:04Oh, they love me.
00:05:06They think the world of Roy,
00:05:09and not because he's Roy Jones Jr., the boss,
00:05:11but because he's a dad.
00:05:13We all together, we all on the same team.
00:05:15I want a relationship that we can be people,
00:05:16we can be friends, we can get along,
00:05:18because that way we can be together for eternity, forever.
00:05:23I don't want the relationship that me and my father have.
00:05:25I don't want that with my kids.
00:05:26A tormented childhood, courtesy of Roy Jones Sr.,
00:05:29has left deep scars,
00:05:31and although Roy Jr. has encouraged a relationship
00:05:33between his children and their grandfather,
00:05:36that doesn't erase the memories of frightful abuse
00:05:39and endless humiliation.
00:05:42I love my father.
00:05:43I want to be like my father,
00:05:44but my father was so aggressive until I didn't want to share anything.
00:05:48I was afraid I might get a weapon,
00:05:50and even today, you know, it's like,
00:05:52it's difficult because it's hard to have to live without having a relationship with your father,
00:05:56and that's why I want to make sure me and my kids don't ever have to be that way.
00:05:58I think that Roy is the best thing that happened to those boys,
00:06:02but those boys are also the best thing that ever happened to Roy.
00:06:05Sometimes it makes me wonder about it because Roy's dad is out there with him,
00:06:11and it could have been the four of them.
00:06:13Perhaps there's still time.
00:06:15Roy Jones hasn't ruled out the possibility of reconciliation with his father,
00:06:19but for now, concentrates on fulfilling himself in his relationship with his sons,
00:06:25silently rehearsing for something he's never had.
00:06:31DeAndre and Deshaun Jones are here tonight to watch their daddy fight at ringside,
00:06:37and win or lose, they're going to love him just as much afterward.
00:06:41What a face.
00:06:43What a face.
00:06:44Tale of the date between Roy Jones Jr. and Otis Grant.
00:06:46You can see that Grant is a veteran of 30 years old, an inch and a half shorter than Roy.
00:06:51They weighed in at 171 and 172.
00:06:54Remember that Grant has spent his entire career as a 160-pound fighter,
00:06:58but way back in his second fight in 1989, he fought at 170.
00:07:01He says he's been shrinking himself all these years,
00:07:04and to be at this weight level will be an advantage for him, not a disadvantage.
00:07:07Tonight, Roy Jones outweighs him by six pounds as they leave the dressing room
00:07:12and has a three-inch reach advantage.
00:07:14Punch that numbers, Larry.
00:07:16You can see that Roy Jones, very accurate puncher, not overactive.
00:07:24Grant throws many more punches.
00:07:25If what Roy said about Grant is true, that he fights to the level of his opponents,
00:07:30he'll throw fewer punches per round in this fight.
00:07:34Lately, Roy has been throwing harder jabs, if not more jabs,
00:07:40as he becomes a little bit more stable and flat-footed as he advances to age 30.
00:07:48And the rules of the bout with our unofficial ringside scorer, Grandpa Harold Letterman.
00:07:54The Roy Jones Jr. on his squared fight is scheduled once again for 12 rounds,
00:08:00using those unified rules for World War Championship fights.
00:08:03There is no standing eight count, no three-knockdown rule.
00:08:07Only the referee can stop the fight,
00:08:08and you cannot be saved by the bell on any round,
00:08:11including the 12th and final round.
00:08:13Jim.
00:08:13And suddenly it occurs to me I'm the only non-grandfather sitting at the table.
00:08:17Here comes Otis Grant.
00:08:28College graduate, former college basketball player.
00:08:33Certainly one of the most collected and interesting men we've had the privilege of meeting in a fighter meeting
00:08:39for a long, long time.
00:08:41Not only that, but he has a regular job as a high school counselor
00:08:47he's only away from it when he fights.
00:08:52Counseling special needs learners at a high school in Montreal,
00:08:57those with developmental and physical disabilities.
00:09:01He's very close to the kids,
00:09:03and all of them are watching tonight.
00:09:08And the record for Otis Grant.
00:09:1031 wins.
00:09:12The loss to Quincy Taylor in the 12th round, a former titlist.
00:09:15He was leading that fight when he got knocked out by Taylor.
00:09:18The draw with Lonnie Bradley was seen by everyone at ringside as highway robbery.
00:09:23Virtually every objective observer felt that Grant had won that bout.
00:09:28And you saw the knockout number, only 17.
00:09:34Otis Grant is a little bit light in punching power.
00:09:38And that could be his biggest disadvantage tonight,
00:09:41because if you don't have the firepower to get Roy Jones' attention
00:09:44and keep him off of you,
00:09:46you can be in trouble.
00:09:47Come here, give me a squirt of the water.
00:09:59You need the bucket.
00:10:00Well, the opponent's in the ring.
00:10:18Where's Roy?
00:10:19Well, you know, Roy wanted to borrow a little of Prince Hamid's act,
00:10:26come in on a runway with smoke and mirrors,
00:10:32not dancing, however,
00:10:34although he certainly has the look of a Michael Jackson with two gloves.
00:10:38But the folks here at Foxwoods who run boxing wouldn't let them.
00:10:45They have achieved their reputation among boxing and boxing
00:10:51and amongst the motors as sort of arrogant and a little inflexible.
00:10:55Roy wraps before and during plays and after.
00:11:11Well, here's one part-time professional basketball player
00:11:31who's in action in his chosen career.
00:11:41And the record, the one loss, of course,
00:12:06on the disqualification against Montel Griffin
00:12:08when he hit Griffin twice
00:12:09while Griffin was already down on the canvas in his next fight.
00:12:13He avenged that with a first-round destruction
00:12:16of Griffin in this very room.

00:13:56the incomparable,

00:14:03Introducing now the principals,
00:14:06first in the blue corner to my right,
00:14:08wearing the black, gold, and green trunks,
00:14:12he weighs in at 172 pounds,
00:14:17his professional record,
00:14:1831 wins,

00:14:27he hails from Montreal, Quebec, Canada,
00:14:30the WBO middleweight champion of the world,
00:14:34and challenger, Otis Magic Grant,
00:14:40Grant,
00:14:42his opponent,
00:14:45in the red corner,
00:14:47wearing the gold trunks,
00:14:50weighing 171 pounds,
00:14:53with a professional record of 37 victories,
00:14:57one defeat,
00:14:58and 31 wins coming by way of knockout,
00:15:02he hails from the home of champions,
00:15:07Pensacola, Florida,
00:15:09the WBC and WBA light heavyweight champion of the world,
00:15:16Roy Jones Jr.
00:15:21Jones Jr.
00:15:24Wow-wows for the WBC and WBA light heavyweight championships.
00:15:35Let's go.
00:15:42That's lovely.
00:15:43Right there.
00:15:44No.
00:15:44Good evening, Roy and Otis.
00:15:52You both received your instructions earlier in the day.
00:15:55You know the rules.
00:15:56Shake hands now and come out boxing at the bell.
00:15:59Good luck.
00:16:01Otis Grant said that he would come out into this fight with his hands high
00:16:06so he doesn't get caught with anything stupid,
00:16:09which sounds like a good idea,
00:16:11because Roy Jones said he would try to check his chin in the first round.
00:16:16It's a big night for the Pensacola contingent already.
00:16:19On the undercard,
00:16:20victories for Derek Smokegainer,
00:16:22for Billy Lewis,
00:16:24for David Izon,
00:16:25all of Roy Jones' stablemates
00:16:27who are in the arena fighting tonight.
00:16:30So it's up to Roy now
00:16:32to follow up what has been constructed by his stablemates
00:16:35and keep the Pensacola record perfect for the evening.
00:16:38What Grant should want to do
00:16:45is get into as many exchanges as he can
00:16:47and try to land the last shot on the exchanges.
00:16:52Roy Jones went down last time in the latter round
00:16:54because of the reckless exchanges.
00:16:58Yeah, yeah,
00:16:59because he lost his concentration,
00:17:01got himself into a bad position against Lou Duvall
00:17:03and got clocked.
00:17:04That's what you want to do.
00:17:05You want to be in and create
00:17:07and land the last shot in the exchanges
00:17:09because Roy Jones,
00:17:10he likes to land a hard shot,
00:17:13but he likes moving out of the way afterwards.
00:17:15Otis Grant lands to the body
00:17:18to begin the thing.
00:17:19Let's go.
00:17:20Arthur McCandy Sr.
00:17:21and heaven only knows
00:17:23how many championship fights for McCandy Sr.
00:17:24You got the number, Larry?
00:17:25It's over 100, isn't it?
00:17:27Oh, about 1,000.
00:17:30He's something else.
00:17:31Just as much energy as ever.
00:17:34And he was the third man in the ring
00:17:35in the famous Ali Frazier first fight.
00:17:40And there's another heavyweight title fight
00:17:42coming up in Madison Square Garden in March.
00:17:46Who's that, Jim?
00:17:47Lennox Lewis versus Evander Holyfield.
00:17:50It appears, finally,
00:17:52the details are being worked out.
00:17:53He's got a good one.
00:17:56He's got a good one.
00:17:56He's got a good one.
00:17:57He's got a good one.
00:17:57He's got a good one.
00:17:58He's got a good one.
00:17:58Come on, come on.
00:17:59Come on, come on.
00:17:59Come on.
00:18:00Tactical first round here, George.
00:18:02Yeah, you want to make sure
00:18:03that you get out there first couple rounds.
00:18:05Don't jump on it.
00:18:07You've studied film.
00:18:08Found out what Roy Jones does not like to do.
00:18:11Until he fought Virgil Hill,
00:18:15Roy Jones seldom threw body punches,
00:18:17but he has suddenly found,
00:18:20after that one punch knockout to the body,
00:18:23that's a useful weapon.
00:18:25He used to work without an effective jab,
00:18:28but in the last four or five fights,
00:18:30he has dramatically improved his jab
00:18:32and is using it throughout the first round here.
00:18:35The good thing about being a softball,
00:18:37you automatically got a defense.
00:18:39Just being on the wrong side like that,
00:18:42that gives you an automatic defense.
00:18:44So the other guy has to work for everything he lands.
00:18:48And it often nullifies the opponent's jab.
00:18:51So if you're working against a guy
00:18:52who's dependent on working off the jab,
00:18:55that can be a big advantage.
00:18:56But Jones, of course,
00:18:57can go completely without it if he needs to.
00:18:59You want to stick around boxing a long time.
00:19:02You need a jab.
00:19:03All right, step back.
00:19:07Roy Jones is so quick.
00:19:09He's able to throw punches from so many angles.
00:19:12He just figures a jab might throw him out.
00:19:22Anything that hurts on him,
00:19:23he's going to take advantage of it.
00:19:24All right, baby.
00:19:30All right.
00:19:30Good work.
00:19:33Tight defense.
00:19:34He ain't going to get you, man.
00:19:35Keep working that jab.
00:19:36Keep working that jab.
00:19:37Try to offset him so he can run something on him.
00:19:40Fighting defensive.
00:19:41Totally defensive.
00:19:42All you got to do is just stay busy.
00:19:44Stay busy.
00:19:44Work your jab a little bit more for me.
00:19:46Work that jab a little bit more.
00:19:48Want a little square to water?
00:19:49Okay.
00:19:50Wait a minute.
00:19:52Just don't stay flat.
00:19:54See, even though he's not doing much, right?
00:19:56He's trying to set you up.
00:19:57Don't stay flat, okay?
00:19:58Just a little bit of bounce.
00:20:00Everything else is good.
00:20:01You're slipping and blocking.
00:20:03Then you're weaving what's not there.
00:20:04All perfect.
00:20:05It's a perfect round.
00:20:06What am I, Liz?
00:20:07We can't win a double-cut.
00:20:09I can't see it.
00:20:10One, three, three.
00:20:11One, three, three.
00:20:11Grant in and out.
00:20:22Roy Jones trying to measure him.
00:20:24Grant doing some talking.
00:20:27College man trying to talk Roy Jones out of this.
00:20:31Lecturing him.
00:20:32He lectured Roy a couple times during the first round.
00:20:35Jones himself said it was an honor to fight Grant because Grant's a college graduate.
00:20:43The right kind of person to be in the sport.
00:20:46Doesn't mean he isn't going to try to knock him out.
00:20:48Incidentally, I turned to Arthur Mercanty Jr., who's seated at the scorer's table next to us,
00:20:57and said, how many title fights for your dad?
00:21:01Arthur Jr. said, I think it's 127.
00:21:03Then he called his dad over and said, 127, is that right?
00:21:06And Arthur Sr. said, no, it's 133.
00:21:11So he's a third of the way to 400.
00:21:15That's the way to do it.
00:21:16He looks just as well today.
00:21:18He's terrific.
00:21:21Round two, still a tactical battle between Roy Jones and Otis Grant.
00:21:25Grant with his southpaw stance.
00:21:28Cautious demeanor.
00:21:30Trying to land one punch at a time against Roy.
00:21:32Who's trying to land one punch at a time against him?
00:21:35Roy Jones, all he has to do is defend this title.
00:21:37The last time he went out, tried to do a lot of other things.
00:21:41Shoe shining, stepping to the right and left.
00:21:44Didn't help him.
00:21:45He got knocked down, but still won the fight in a virtual shutout on the scorecard.
00:21:49Yeah, but you want to get out there and defend your title and fight hard to keep it.
00:21:53Don't do the extra foolishness.
00:21:54Grant should be creating the exchange, though.
00:22:02Right now, he's staying away from them.
00:22:04All right, Grant.
00:22:08Five left hooks in rapid-fire succession by Jones there.
00:22:19He has terrific power off the front foot.
00:22:21When you're fighting a guy like Roy Jones Jr., you just can't wait for an opening.
00:22:39You just got to just throw your shot.
00:22:41Stop.
00:22:42You've got to keep him up, Roy.
00:22:43Keep him up.
00:22:44Let's go.
00:22:44You wait for something, nothing will ever happen.
00:22:54You just got to go out there and throw reckless punches.
00:22:57Something will happen.
00:23:00Might happen to you, though, George.
00:23:05Devastating right hand to the middle of the chest by Jones.
00:23:08This is the one chance in your life you've got to take a chance.
00:23:12No one's going to give you their title.
00:23:14You're talking about Grant.
00:23:16Yeah, Grant.
00:23:16He's going to have to take it.
00:23:17No one's going to give you their title.
00:23:19He doesn't look disposed to take any chances so far.
00:23:23Grant's a guy who came in throwing as many as 70 punches a round,
00:23:26and in the first couple of rounds, he's had a very limited outcourt.
00:23:31All right.
00:23:31This turkey came by moving back, baby.
00:23:34He came by.
00:23:35He's going to total defensive phase when you're moving back.
00:23:37The only thing you do is just push his jab out.
00:23:40You can hit him with some power shot.
00:23:46All right.
00:23:47We're flowing now.
00:23:48Way to work.
00:23:49Way to work.
00:23:49Just keep doing what you're doing.
00:23:51You're bothering with that right jab.
00:23:54Understand?
00:23:54Right.
00:23:54And when you have him on the ropes there,
00:23:56and you went in for that second attack,
00:23:58you came out of the floor,
00:23:59you go, oh, fucking faith.
00:23:59Let him go into a defensive position right away.
00:24:01You know what I mean?
00:24:02Yeah.
00:24:02Don't let him be able to walk off them ropes, all right?
00:24:05Okay.
00:24:05I'm going to walk off.
00:24:06Let me just walk off.
00:24:07Let's go.
00:24:08Let's go.
00:24:08Let's go.
00:24:08Let's go.
00:24:11We're boxing very smart.
00:24:13Very, very smart.
00:24:14Stay there.
00:24:22We mentioned Grant's high punch output in some previous fights,
00:24:2660, 70 punches a round.
00:24:28He's thrown a total of 58 punches by copy box numbers
00:24:31in the first two rounds,
00:24:33so averaging less than 30 punches per round.
00:24:35More devastatingly,
00:24:37he's zero for 39 in his jabs,
00:24:39and you heard Alton Merkerson telling Roy Jones,
00:24:41he just pushes his jab out there.
00:24:43Go ahead and attack him.
00:24:49Doesn't help your opponent when you're fast,
00:24:51plus you go to the body also.
00:24:53Roy Jones,
00:24:54he's doing the whole thing here.
00:24:57Jones whacking twice to the body with the right hand,
00:24:59targeting the middle of Grant's chest and finding the target.
00:25:08Now Jones again starting to step around to the left and to the right,
00:25:12something he shouldn't have to do now.
00:25:14He's in charge of this fight.
00:25:17A lot of that starts to take the sting out of your legs,
00:25:19and the latter rounds you start to feel it.
00:25:21And Jones landed a right hand upstairs
00:25:24as Grant finally dropped the guard
00:25:26with Roy whacking away constantly to his body.
00:25:29Grant's punch-out foot is still limited in this round.
00:25:32He still throws the jab about two-thirds of the distance.
00:25:35When he lands,
00:25:36it's normally with a tentative left hand,
00:25:38sometimes to the body.
00:25:41When you're fighting at this weight,
00:25:43you just can't waste a lot of footwork.
00:25:45But sometimes a guy can hurt you
00:25:46not because he's the puncher,
00:25:48it's just because he's big.
00:25:51For the moments, they're heavyweights.
00:25:56There's a redness,
00:25:57kind of a beginning abrasion
00:25:58under the left eye of Otis Grant,
00:26:02where Roy has targeted him with the right hand
00:26:04on a couple of occasions.
00:26:05See, now Grant is starting to get into the exchange.
00:26:08After he hits you,
00:26:10throw something,
00:26:10whether you miss or not.
00:26:13Throw something back.
00:26:16Vicious left hook to the body
00:26:34right underneath the right arm of Grant.
00:26:40George,
00:26:40if you keep sticking the jab out there
00:26:43without any intention of trying to land it,
00:26:45is it doing you any good?
00:26:47Well, it makes a guy look,
00:26:48try to look past the left hand,
00:26:49but it's not doing a whole lot of good.
00:26:51But he has to stop and think
00:26:52and start all over again
00:26:54once you put it out there.
00:26:56And that's what you want to do,
00:26:56make him start all over again
00:26:58if he's thinking about doing something.
00:26:59Stick the jab out there.
00:27:01Break the way!
00:27:01A lot of those punches are hitting Grant
00:27:13right on the elbow.
00:27:14Okay. Way to work. Watch this mountain. Peace out, huh?
00:27:39There you go. There you go. Change the jab up a little bit, man. Just change it up a little bit. Shoot it down, faint it down, shoot it up, and it's just your power shots up. Okay? Just faint the faintest light shots and go with the big ones. Try to land two of them.
00:27:56Step around. Keep him niche. Bother him with this. Bother him with that. Don't, like, just let fact and move with him because he's sneaking in, you know, with his feet. You understand?
00:28:06Okay.
00:28:08Roy Jones has suddenly found body punching, something that he can do very well and try to combat a fighter who is trying to just move away from the shoulders up so that his body is still there to hit.
00:28:33Roy told us before the fight he wasn't going to try to kill this guy, but he won't babysit him either, and that sounds about right.
00:28:40Now, the babysitter is the big guy who's sitting with Roy's two seven-year-old son.
00:28:49Jones starting to get a little more aggressive as round four begins.
00:28:55Otis Grant still finding it difficult to get at Roy and engage him in exchanges.
00:29:02That's what he needs, an exchange.
00:29:04You know, sometimes, oh, well, with the right hand by Jones.
00:29:08Devastating right hand.
00:29:10Grant trying to reach for something to hold on to.
00:29:14Roy keeps throwing.
00:29:16Grant's starting to get his legs back now, but he was stunned.
00:29:21Yeah, he wasn't babysitting him there.
00:29:23Jones grinning at photographers at ringside.
00:29:33Grant moving with every Jones thing.
00:29:39And when Roy gets you moving with his faints, he'll play you like a yo-yo.
00:29:58You gotta expect that now.
00:29:59When you're working out with lightweights in the gym, they do you the same thing that Jones is doing to Grant.
00:30:04So he's gotta concede some of that and just, hey, he's quicker.
00:30:09Now, Otis finally got into Jones' body and hammered him a couple times to the ribcage.
00:30:13That was, frankly, the best assault I've seen from Otis Grant so far.
00:30:17Right hands from three different angles in that assault.
00:30:24That's why he's skeptical about throwing a left jab because he's got so many things on his mind to do with force.
00:30:30Power punches are concerned.
00:30:32Now that was the exchange.
00:30:34That's the exchange that's the exchange Grant wanted to create for himself.
00:30:49Let him hit you with four, get in one good one.
00:30:52That's the kind of left-hand shot Duvall was able to catch Jones with.
00:30:56You want the exchanges because you can, you're not small like you're accustomed to.
00:31:01Grant's in trouble on another right hand.
00:31:03But he's been devastated not by power but by speed now.
00:31:07It's a difference.
00:31:08Speed kills.
00:31:09And you can see what a sportsman Otis Grant is.
00:31:11He laughs and Pat Jones on the butt like, damn, you are something.
00:31:15Yeah, that's why he's afraid to lead because Roy, he's just so quick.
00:31:21It's just another class of athletes.
00:31:24A higher class of athletes.
00:31:26So quick, so punishing.
00:31:28Way to work.
00:31:31Get that, get that one.
00:31:33Get back.
00:31:35Give me that bucket, Howard.
00:31:38Woo!
00:31:42You got me a couple of times.
00:31:45I'm okay.
00:31:46Well, the one he caught you with was a good shot.
00:31:48Two others you gave to him.
00:31:49Okay.
00:31:50You gave them to him, man.
00:31:51I know.
00:31:52Give me more.
00:31:53You throw it to him right here.
00:31:54Okay.
00:31:55That's all you need to do.
00:31:56You go to sleep.
00:31:57All right.
00:31:58You want some on your head?
00:31:59Way to work.
00:32:00Way to work.
00:32:01Keep the frames going.
00:32:02Try to turn it.
00:32:03Try to get him turning left and right.
00:32:04When he turn to get you.
00:32:05Get him.
00:32:06Get him.
00:32:07Get him.
00:32:08Get him.
00:32:09Get him.
00:32:10Get him.
00:32:16Roy says that sometimes when he looks at the tapes, he amazes himself with the combinations
00:32:23he throws.
00:32:24Here's one of them.
00:32:28Round five begins.
00:32:35I like things for Grant because what he's done, round five, the fight was extended.
00:32:42He's got the bigger shoulders.
00:32:43The bumping and the grinding are going to benefit him now.
00:32:48Harold, how do you have it through four?
00:32:50Don't look now, but he switched this out for.
00:32:52Yeah, I know.
00:32:5320 to 36, Roy Jones Jr.
00:32:55Jim, I want to tell you.
00:32:56I saw all the great light heavyweights.
00:32:58This guy's the fastest thing I've ever seen for a light heavyweight.
00:33:01I love that move in round four where he turned away and then turned in with that right hand
00:33:05at the end of round four.
00:33:06Roy Jones Jr.
00:33:07really saw this.
00:33:08All the moves, all the power.
00:33:09Tremendous combination punching.
00:33:11In the second round, they hit him a five punch combination with that left hand before
00:33:14he pulled his left thumb back.
00:33:15Roll Roy Jones in this one.
00:33:20What Grant was able to do, he made Roy Jones throw his jab, duck under it, and step back.
00:33:26This guy's thinking, I'm telling you.
00:33:29That wasn't a good one.
00:33:31Well, he's definitely a thinking fighter.
00:33:34But he has to be more of a fighting fighter to put Roy a little bit on the defensive.
00:33:40Yeah, because by doing this, he gives Jones room and time to make whatever choice he wants
00:33:51to make.
00:33:52I mean, this is the graduate school of hard knocks.
00:33:55This is not an undergraduate school for education.
00:34:00The graduate school of super fast hard knocks.
00:34:03This guy has no respect for the power that Joan has.
00:34:20Just the speed.
00:34:22Good straight left hand by Grant this time.
00:34:32Right between the chest and the chin.
00:34:35That's the punch of the fight.
00:34:36One of them.
00:34:37You throw these shots for two or three rounds.
00:34:40Roy Jones tries to pay you back, and you got a fight going.
00:34:49Jones should have been a little more aggressive with the jab, so this guy doesn't get a lot
00:34:53of courage to start doing these things.
00:34:55Well, Grant is a guy who's accustomed to outboxing his opponents.
00:34:59Okay.
00:35:00And part of what you're saying, George, is that he won't be able to outbox Roy Jones.
00:35:03He's going to have to outfight him in some way, shape, or form.
00:35:06It's a hard transition to make.
00:35:07Grant came into the fight telling us, we're not going to worry about what Roy Jones does.
00:35:11He's a great fighter, and we don't have any control over that.
00:35:14All we'll be able to do is try to govern that.
00:35:16Now you're going to exchange us now.
00:35:17Yep.
00:35:18And he gets to Jones' body.
00:35:20Against the ropes.
00:35:21Get him and take him.
00:35:23All right, Grant.
00:35:24Let's go.
00:35:46goes for his first title against champion yori boy campus 72 wins 62 knockouts for campus one
00:35:55of the great little-known records in the sport and campus has only two losses to truly great
00:36:06fighters felix trinidad and jose luis lopez suck me up one
00:36:11there we see otis and finally getting a little bit to roy roy sometimes has a tendency to go back
00:36:22to the ropes like this and let himself be a little humbled on
00:36:26a compu box oddity through five rounds otis grant is an unbelievable
00:36:41zero for 91 in jabs 91 jabs thrown none landed so far by copy box numbers on the part of otis
00:36:51grant jones of course is the fighter who once held vinnie pazienza without a punch connect
00:36:56for an entire round only fighter ever since the origination of copy box punch count to hold a
00:37:02fighter without a connect for an entire round
00:37:04whoa a good straight left by grant he's counting on these exchanges and i'm telling him because
00:37:11of the size of his shoulders he can benefit by them in the latter round roy jones has got
00:37:16to keep jabbing a little bit and set things up behind the left jab and roy just as you
00:37:21say that begins to lift the left arm and jab just a little bit there's nothing wrong with
00:37:25a left jab bull rushing jones now the ball tried that it worked a couple of times that's one way
00:37:33to create exchanges is go forward that's right and nothing happened to him when he went forward like
00:37:38that he's got to find a happy medium to go forward with a shot roy looks like he's trying a little too
00:37:46hard to land devastating punches rather than to just fight him and land whatever is there
00:37:52good another exchange what an uppercut there was a devastating punch now that's the danger of going
00:38:02forward seven eight a perfectly timed uppercut tries it again
00:38:13now he's holding grant intelligently tries to hold on but doesn't get enough of a piece now he's got
00:38:22that's why jones threw an uppercut that time and grant's legs don't look too good as he goes backward to
00:38:29the middle of the ring that front leg is sticks and jones knows it he's attacking him
00:38:40grant's still a little wobbling
00:38:42that's that exchange that grant can benefit by now too much on the defensive at this moment though
00:38:53now he's starting to get his consciousness back a little now that is another exchange he was able
00:38:57to land a good looping left hand you're not gonna stop jones from being good what you want to do is get in one yourself
00:39:12i think jones is hoping grant will come at him again and he can try that uppercut one more time
00:39:20grant showing some resilience here
00:39:22second knockdown of the fight credited to roy jones
00:39:36on the water ice bag you can see it right here yeah you know who's there all right you see the punch
00:39:49that's coming i feel it feel good feel good some water
00:39:52that's coming i feel good what you did that round if you heard him again go straight to the body's phone
00:40:07roy loading up for a big shot looking for an opening and finds it right there
00:40:11punch look it might have landed like high on the chest just the force of the blow
00:40:26seems to turn him over well he tried to get his knee from out of that position that's why he ran
00:40:32start to roll over back he was cuffed good
00:40:50when you fight a fighter like roy jones you got to count the cost how much it's going to cost to
00:40:56build this house prior to it hey there are going to be some knockdown there's going to be some scratches
00:41:00but hey i got to stay in there and good things can happen you just don't want too many of them
00:41:06best thing that can happen is the fight should end as quickly as possible lotus grant
00:41:19lotus grant a dedicated sportsman certainly wants to compete to the best of his ability here
00:41:25you heard him tell his trainer manager russ amber between rounds i'm fine i can see the punches coming
00:41:35he just can't get out of the way
00:41:44he's waiting for one good shot roy jones
00:41:47guys are too good for that stop stop stop let's mix it up let's get going i was just about to say
00:41:56there it's almost just that they're posing as slow motion statues
00:42:01all right arthur bachani good for you
00:42:10i wonder can you take points from guys that's what he'd say but what would you do
00:42:13realize them both right what make it a nine nine round i mean grant should be commended he's knocked
00:42:20down the last round he's back into this thing he's got the guy hesitant
00:42:23it's exactly right i'm not even sure it's the referee's business whether that's right hey i'll
00:42:30believe through all of this i disagree i think they're here to fight and if they're just standing
00:42:36there and looking at each other and posing i think what arthur bachani did was exactly right
00:42:43well but by what authority i mean it's a good suggestion
00:42:47there's little he can do to make them do something if both are going to do the same thing
00:42:51i mean again as as we say penalizing both points make it a nine nine round grant benefit no action
00:42:56he can thoroughly recover from that knockdown no question the longer it goes without roy hitting
00:43:01him the better off grant is he's not hitting roy enough anyway
00:43:08there's another straight right and grant grabs and holds now this guy roy jones is starting to load up now
00:43:16we're gradually getting into the area where the mosley layoff guy wound up and the question becomes
00:43:22how much punishment does grant want to take
00:43:26we've already seen it once before tonight
00:43:35december 19 boyd mayweather jr attempts to finish off an astounding 1998 with his fight against angel
00:43:41manfredi mayweather has gone from olympic silver medalist to champion in two years
00:43:46don't underestimate manfredi of course he too has won a championship at 130 pounds and has wins over
00:43:51artura gatti and john brown in 1998. also that night heavyweights david tua
00:43:56and hasim rockman square off in a vital fight for both men
00:44:01the winner of that fight particularly if he produces a spectacular performance will linger on
00:44:06the edges of the heavyweight championship picture and that left hand has to go downstairs and back
00:44:11upstairs but even if it's not even if this is not let bother him knock his hand down slide it in
00:44:15bother it knock it down bring that one over the top all right
00:44:18and we're making it clear he wants grant to keep throwing the jab whether he lands it or not
00:44:31he's not tired well roy he gets the luxury of fighting at a measured pace because
00:44:57via his quickness and his astonishing counter-punching ability he limits his opponent's output so much
00:45:04that he can sort of take his time and pick his shots nothing happens until he's ready that's right
00:45:09those are the exchanges that grant should be in on you don't have to wait to hit him just put your hands up
00:45:27but getting into those exchanges creates the possibility that roy catches it again close with another one of those
00:45:34because there's a great a great combination from grant under the circumstances that's a terrific effort
00:45:41you gotta create something if you're gonna fight for the title once in a lifetime chance you just gotta gamble
00:45:51otis grant fighting out of montreal doesn't get the publicity or the opportunities that
00:45:56other north american fighters might get he knew what this meant to him
00:46:04roy jones is going around to the body going over left and right side
00:46:09protecting himself from any hard punches later on in the pipe
00:46:13a lot of the power away from grant grant if he had any left hand upstairs yeah he doesn't have much
00:46:17punching power as we showed 17 knockouts in his 32 wins coming in
00:46:23he certainly didn't expect to knock out roy jones hit him in the chest that time
00:46:33and just as jesse james leha was brave against jane mosley so too is otis grant honorably brave
00:46:45against roy jones
00:46:59grant's only his chance to get into one of those changes catch roy jones leaning in a little bit
00:47:06no hope for him to stand on the outside and box him and get a shot instead he comes forward and
00:47:11catches another one of those whistling uppercuts
00:47:26oh mercancy took a left
00:47:28grant goes all the way to jones's corner to slap his glove yeah he's really he didn't intend to
00:47:39throw the punch out yeah that's what he wanted to let him know god give you a chance like that
00:47:43i'm watching sports get inside where you're in a position to learn top light heavyweights larry
00:47:50here's a look at them roy jones reggie johnson would have been here tonight but for a shoulder injury
00:47:56and here you see the two germans neither of whom seems eager to come over and challenge roy jones
00:48:02both of them make a lot of money in europe and david telesko is an up-and-coming young white heavyweight
00:48:09who's made an impression recently could be fighting roy by the end of 99 jones's one-time nemesis
00:48:19montel griffin an upset loser last night to a young fighter named eric harding
00:48:24who may become a factor in the division i'd like to see telesko and harding fight
00:48:33harold how do you have it through eight real big for roy jones eight to nothing 80 to 71 a dominating
00:48:40performance by roy jones jr just keeps hammering hammering him with those left hooks the straight
00:48:45right hands the combinations i mean the total package this is just one of the most one-sided
00:48:50fights i've ever judged jim i mean it's a total no-brainer as far as the story is concerned
00:48:56matt jones is starting to use his left jab i like that
00:49:03harold your daughter julie scores several of the undercard fights here tonight did you critique her
00:49:07work i can't jim she punches on her right there but she's still the best judge in the family he scores
00:49:15just as well roy jones good left hook and out of the way you know earlier tonight i said we would be
00:49:23watching performance art or a concert tonight rather than competition
00:49:29concerts are great for music and comedy but i'm not sure this has had the uh the drama
00:49:36uh that we want to see in boxing well it's been jazz not rock and roll as as roy jones is quite content
00:49:46to land one punch at a time if that's all that's possible yeah he shouldn't have done you know look
00:49:53you're the champs win the fight don't create and do more than you have to you can end up getting hurt
00:49:59now he was hit with a good sliding right hand that time and roy doesn't like to get hit by his own
00:50:07candidate
00:50:13it would be good for grant to keep that fight just like that for a few rounds just keep it like that
00:50:18there you go roy jones can do nothing when he's on the road why not just keep him on the road
00:50:23let the referee say break back up just right back on him this is one of the best things grant can do
00:50:33it limits jones's power and it gives him a chance to land
00:50:38why jones is saying come down
00:50:46grant busts jones with a left and a right and then ties roy up as jones tries to retaliate
00:50:54suddenly round nine isn't such a bad frame for otis grant evidently now the corners put him in the
00:51:00corners not just on the rope but take him back to the corners
00:51:06something griffin was able to do in the first fight with jones before
00:51:10the disqualification something mike mccallum was able to do against jones
00:51:14in what became an easy roy jones decision
00:51:23there's a combination
00:51:28grant bell just put his hands right by his chin and bob and we
00:51:31all right
00:51:37what you're going to do is what you've got to be doing okay that's what you've got to be doing
00:51:48what you're going to do is what you've got to be doing okay that's what you've got to be doing
00:52:02you let him take you to the ropes and you sit as a target he's going to hit you
00:52:05he's going to hit you this is that all right you keep working like that when you've got it
00:52:10stop catch up with it okay watch it okay i'm here all right
00:52:17all right baby
00:52:25the ninth was grant's best round but he indicated in his corner that he was hurt by a body shot
00:52:33it's like a
00:52:34one of those snakes venom strikes you no one even saw it but it hurts
00:52:43viper and arnold letterman gave the ninth round to otis grant a round in which grant by copy
00:52:48box numbers landed 13 to 23 punches meaning when he was able to throw he landed
00:52:54oh he went into his corner the last time walking sideways oh he was he was hurting for certain
00:53:05and he heard him say to his corner man i got caught with a body shot you could see the pain
00:53:10you think that roy jones knows it george i don't think so
00:53:15i think the body punching is just an avocation here you know
00:53:19roy jones is gradually painting a picture on otis grant's face
00:53:25goes back to the body with the left hand there grant ducking down to try to avoid the body punches
00:53:37straight right hand by jones and on a delayed reaction the third official knockdown of the fight
00:53:47grant is blinking in the corner and his corner is going to throw in the top
00:53:50that's right
00:53:51that's right don't allow him to stop the fight it's a good idea the referee is wise this time
00:54:00and you just got to step in and say no the guy was okay he allowed him to get up
00:54:05but the trainer manager russ amber who has been with otis grant from the very beginning
00:54:15made it unequivocal he wanted the fight stopped
00:54:18harold larry let me tell you if the trainer the chief second steps on the apron under the rules
00:54:26the fight is over okay you can't throw the towel in the candy's right to not recognize that
00:54:31recognizing the tower but when a chief second wants the fight stopped he steps on the apron and that's
00:54:37it the chief second does have that right to stop the fight well amber was all the way into the ring
00:54:43and i'm not sure mccanny was clear yet that he was going to stop it because mccanny had a lot of
00:54:47respect for the fighter who looked okay but amber made it abundantly clear when he came through the
00:54:52ropes and put himself the important thing is is that the trainer and manager did the right thing
00:54:59both fights were similar in this regard the champions just came up against fighters who were prepared to
00:55:07take a lot of punishment and did and eventually were beaten down by body punches very similar fights
00:55:14in different styles i think it was brave of the referee to say oh no no he's kind of brave you
00:55:21don't hardly see that anymore well this guy's a classy guy otis grant and keep and the relationship
00:55:28he has with his trainer manager is obviously a friendship as well as a professional relationship
00:55:33and that's what amber was expressing out there yeah he benefited no doubt about it he can come
00:55:37back another day with a one not so fast there's the knockdown
00:55:45i'm not sure grant thought he was going to lose his balance on that it's the kind of punch he had
00:55:49taken effectively earlier in the bout and maybe that's what prompted amber to say hey wait if he
00:55:54goes down on that he's had enough but i think it was great that the referee made that decision i mean
00:56:00that's a decision for boxing arthur mccanty in title fight number 133 for him
00:56:10scorecards jones was ahead by nine or ten points on all three cards headed toward an easy victory
00:56:22he gets the technical knockout in round number ten jane mosley got his
00:56:27and jones
00:56:39festooning himself with title belts
00:56:44they've gotten bigger since the old days haven't they george yeah they get keep getting bigger and
00:56:47bigger
00:56:51not big enough for you now they never did fit my waist now there's the towel which was thrown into the
00:56:59ring and mccanty grabbed it and said i'm going to toss the towel out of here but here comes amber
00:57:06jumping over the ropes you saw you have no choice but to stop it then when your corner man come in
00:57:10it's a disqualification anyway
00:57:17and even at that point i think mccanty still wanted to offer the opportunity to the fighter to go forward
00:57:22but as harold letterman clearly told you by the rules the fight was over as soon as amber was on the apron
00:57:29it puts one in mind of lou duva standing on the apron when meldrick taylor
00:57:41saw his fight stopped against julio cesar chavez with two seconds to go
00:57:44so now i have to assume we're ready to mark barrow ready to go to mark barrow for the official
00:57:54particulars ladies and gentlemen the blue corner has requested a stoppage of this bout referee arthur
00:58:06mercanty mccanty senior has complied at one minute 18 seconds of the 10th round the winner by tactical knockout
00:58:17and still wbc and wba light heavyweight champion of the world roy jones jr jones jr
00:58:36and final punch stat numbers one-sidedly in favor of jones who landed 107 more punches both guys
00:58:44throwing sparingly i mean that's that's an output of about 40 punches around for roy
00:58:50and for grant it's more like 25 punches per round so you can see a lot of this was just jones landing
00:58:56power shots he only landed 28 out of the 101 jabs he threw and check it out jones is just so fast
00:59:05generously we give grant credit for a one percent connect rate on his jabs it was really oh more
00:59:11like seven tenths of a percent larry merchant with the winner and still light heavyweight campaign of
00:59:18the world roy jones larry thank you jim congratulations again roy it looks roy that for a fighter who used
00:59:26to not throw many body punches you've suddenly found it a very useful part of your arsenal well first of
00:59:33all right thank god for giving me the opportunity to do what i do there i said one time pensacota in
00:59:37the house what's up mother can't louisiana the body shots as you progress as a fighter as you know
00:59:42you have to start working on picking up and improving other parts of the game other parts of the game
00:59:46you can't just get complacent and be satisfied as being one thing so i've done dominated to the head
00:59:51all my career people said roy doesn't throw me any body shots so i said okay let's go and show them
00:59:55that have a complete all-around arsenal i can do whatever's necessary to want to fight
00:59:59are you finding now as you're approaching 30 that you're a little bit more flat-footed
01:00:05and trying to make a kind of a transition a little bit in your boxing no it's just that you couldn't
01:00:10back up from the south part you know i had to keep the pressure on because i was the champion he
01:00:14wasn't going to take any unnecessary chances so i had to come at him the last south part was a
01:00:18counter punch a guy who if i stood back it would have been a boring fight so i had to try to pick up the
01:00:21issue and go forward and fight a little more flat-footed that's one of the one of the disadvantages
01:00:27of facing the south part do you have any preferences for your opponents in 1999 you know i don't really
01:00:34care as long as everything's right roy jones always better do this pensacola mobile gulf coast
01:00:39mississippi milton everywhere down the gulf coast we the best i'm the man i don't care who it is what
01:00:43it takes i will do what i got to do to get them out of here thank you very much roy all right otis
01:00:51i just want to ask you uh were you aware of what was happening there at the end of the fight
01:00:57that your corner wanted the fight stopped i was fine i wasn't hurt or anything but uh
01:01:02russell warned me previously i think was the fifth round when i got dropped in uppercut
01:01:07he told me he's not gonna let me get in trouble like that again if i did uh he would he would call
01:01:12the fight you recognize that it's his job uh to determine when you're being too brave for your
01:01:18own good definitely i recognize it i mean uh you know i've been with this guy since i was 13 years
01:01:23old and he's not gonna let me get hurt in the ring thank you for a gutty performance thank you guys
01:01:28for the opportunity just want to say this one thing after the first fight tonight
01:01:33the manager of jesse leha said to an hbo executive did we look good enough for you to bring us back
01:01:44again yeah the executive said well then he said bring us back next time against somebody who is human
01:01:51i think that we saw two prize fighters tonight in roy jones and shane mosley who are a little beyond
01:02:01human in the top level of the sport jim yeah but i don't want to leave the air without mentioning
01:02:08something very human that happened earlier this week this past wednesday george in new york roy jones
01:02:14hosted a heavily attended benefit screening of the new hbo documentary on sugar ray robinson all of the
01:02:21proceeds from that night went to benefit the family of gerald mcclellan who was damaged uh by
01:02:27injuries he suffered in his fight against nigel ben gerald mcclellan may well have been roy jones's
01:02:32signature opponent had he been able to continue in the sport but all the money went to mcclellan's
01:02:36family and and that was a huge night for the sport of boxing george i think so and that's what
01:02:41it's going to keep us surviving when boxers get involved like that raising money helping out in any
01:02:47way we can to one another that's going to be the survival of the sport roy jones
01:02:51contributing not just to the brilliance of the sport in the ring but to its humanity

01:05:00too much punishment too many vicious body shots suffering a few knockdowns and finally calling
01:05:06it quits against the outstanding mosley and then roy jones picked up right where mosley left off with a
01:05:12similar display of body punches and a fusillade of power right hands upstairs jones knocked otis grant
01:05:19down three times and ultimately forced grant's corner to call for a stoppage in the bout roy jones
