Transcript
00:00The Chagornas Indoor Sporting Arena has seen some intense sporting battles over the years,
00:05from boxing to futsal, badminton, netball and volleyball.
00:09However, when was the last time you've heard about a sporting activity taking place at that facility?
00:15Well, it's been four years that the Chagornas Indoor Sporting Facility has been closed.
00:20The Minister of Sport indicated he was surprised that the venue had been closed that long.
00:24So, is there more to this that is not yet known?
00:27The Minister of Sport, Philip Watts, toured the facility along with councillors, the Chagornas Mayor,
00:33chairman of Sport TT, as well as the manager of the facility.
00:37They met water-stained walls on the outside and on the inside, the hall is empty,
00:42spare for a few shuttles, feathers and some cracks from the rigour of past competitions.
00:48Were you surprised that it was closed?
00:50I'm very much surprised because when we look to our left, which is your right,
00:54we have a beautiful facility on the side there too that is closed.
01:00So, as I said, most definitely we will have this facility up and running within four months from now.
01:07The facility falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Sport
01:10and over the four-year period, security guards and cleaners remained at the venue.
01:16What I understand here from the councillors and the mayor,
01:19this facility has been decommissioned sometime around 2020 for minor issues like sewer works,
01:26minor renovation, but this particular minister will have it done in a short space of time.
01:33However, how much money will it take to repair the facility?
01:36And is the government willing to foot the bill to bring it back to functionality?
01:40It's a question the mayor is hoping to get answers to.
01:44It's just not only basketball that takes place here.
01:46It's basketball, netball, futsal, you name it.
01:49It happens here, karate.
01:51It happens here at this indoor facility.
01:53And a lot of the Burgesses have been suffering, especially who play sports.
01:58And we would like to encourage that our Burgesses, you know,
02:02get involved in positive activities such as this.
02:04And this is our right step in that direction.
02:07The minister indicated he intends to visit more facilities
02:11and stir conversations on the matter as he gets settled into the job.
02:16Sergio DeFore, TV6 Board.
