01:58From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
02:05Good evening.
02:06It's great to have you with us on this Saturday.
02:08I'm Whit Johnson.
02:08Several developing stories as we come on.
02:11U.S. B-2 bombers moving across the Pacific as President Trump weighs whether to strike Iran
02:16and the urgent meeting tonight with his national security team.
02:20But we begin with the deadly storms in the heartland and more than 150 million Americans on alert for dangerous heat.
02:27A state of emergency in North Dakota.
02:30At least three people killed.
02:31Severe thunderstorms and several reported tornadoes leaving a trail of destruction across the state.
02:37A storm chaser capturing this massive twister.
02:40And these drone images showing about a dozen trained tanker cars derailed by a tornado.
02:46The hot, dry, and windy conditions feeling multiple wildfires in the west.
02:50This one in Utah forcing mandatory evacuations and destroying multiple homes.
02:55Our weather team is standing by with more on that dangerous heat wave now building in the east.
03:00But first, here's ABC's Melissa Adon.
03:02Tonight, the state of emergency, deadly weather ravaging the heartland as more than 150 million Americans from the Midwest to the Northeast brace for life-threatening heat.
03:15Three are dead after multiple reported tornadoes in North Dakota.
03:20This massive twister seemed bearing down on these storm chasers.
03:23North Dakota Governor Armstrong declaring a statewide disaster.
03:28Dad, it's horrible.
03:30It's so horrible out here.
03:33Like, the whole farm's gone.
03:36In Valley City, one family's farm flattened by that tornado.
03:40This barn torn apart.
03:41It's totally gone.
03:44Everything's destroyed.
03:45Parts of this nearby town of Enderlin leveled.
03:49Nothing left of this home, torn down to its foundation.
03:52First responders say the scene was one of the worst they've ever faced.
03:56It's a tragic event because they are all close.
03:59We are a tight-knit community and everybody knows everybody.
04:02These empty train cars derailed by a tornado.
04:05One of them thrown far from the tracks.
04:07With those storms moving past the heartland, wildfires in Utah scorching multiple homes.
04:13The sky lighting up orange with the tree line burning.
04:17And tonight, that dangerous heat wave expanding east.
04:20The uncommonly early onset of triple-digit temperatures putting millions at risk.
04:25New York City's Mayor Adams warning New Yorkers to get ready.
04:29These conditions could be deadly and life-threatening if you are not prepared.
04:36With that heat fueling those dangerous storms in North Dakota,
04:39that's where thousands remain without power tonight.
04:41As first responders continue searching the area.
04:45Melissa, Dawn, thank you.
04:47And as we mentioned, more than 150 million Americans are now under heat alerts.
04:51Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station WABC.
04:55And Danny, how long could this dangerous heat wave last?
04:58Right into the work week, Witt, especially here in the Northeast.
05:00Taking a look at all the heat alerts, we're talking from Colorado up through Maine.
05:04We have extreme heat warnings from major metro areas like Minneapolis, Chicago, and St. Louis.
05:08That warning extending from Philly up through Boston tomorrow.
05:11Let's talk temperature.
05:12Today, the focus of that intense heat over the Midwest, that's spreading northeast tomorrow.
05:16And these highs that we're seeing, it's very unusual for us to see this intensive heat this early in the season.
05:21It's one of the reasons why we could see so many records fall.
05:24In New York City specifically, Monday and Tuesday, those standing daily high temperature records were set back in 1888.
05:30Also this early in the season, our bodies haven't acclimated.
05:32But compounding the issue is the humidity.
05:34That builds with the heat.
05:36Triple digit heat indices for D.C., for New York, for Boston.
05:39Another reason this is so dangerous, Witt, is the fact that our overnight lows are average highs for this time of year in New York City.
05:45So our bodies don't have time to recover.
05:47Now the first day of summer comes roaring right in.
05:49All right, Danny Beckstrom, thank you.
05:51We appreciate it.
05:52We head overseas now to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
05:56Tonight, we're learning multiple U.S. B-2 stealth bombers are on the move heading to Guam.
06:00Those planes could carry the 30,000-pound bunker buster bombs capable of destroying Iran's underground nuclear facility.
06:08This as President Trump considers whether to launch an American strike against Iran.
06:13ABC's Marcus Moore is in Tel Aviv tonight.
06:17Tonight, sources tell ABC News multiple B-2 stealth bombers capable of carrying bunker busting bombs heading to Guam.
06:24As President Trump weighs, joining Israel in its war against Iran, convening an urgent meeting with his top national security advisors.
06:33Those bombers, the only U.S. aircraft capable of dropping the 30,000-pound explosive that could damage or destroy Iran's Fordo nuclear facility, buried deep underground in a mountain.
06:43The B-2s, which are based in Missouri, can stay in the air for 24 hours, thanks to tanker jets, which can refuel the bombers.
06:51And multiple refueling planes are seen in this map on FlightAware.
06:55Tonight, it's unclear why the B-2s and other aircraft have been moved to Guam.
07:00They would have to move this closer to Iran if they were going to use this to go after the very deeply buried targets underneath Fordo Mountain.
07:08So it may take more than one attack, more than one sortie across the target by these B-2s.
07:14So if the president does decide to go in and attack Iran, it probably will take more than one day, more than one strike.
07:22It comes as a second U.S. carrier.
07:25The USS Nimitz is set to arrive in the region, the carrier equipped with 60 fighter jets.
07:30Tonight, Israel saying it struck Iran's Isfahan nuclear site again.
07:34Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, remains in a bunker in an undisclosed location.
07:39The New York Times now reporting the Ayatollah has chosen three potential successors in the event he is assassinated.
07:46This week, Iran firing multiple strikes into Israel, hitting Haifa, Tel Aviv, and a hospital in southern Israel.
07:54With Iran warning tonight that any U.S. attack would be dangerous for the 40,000 American troops in the region,
08:00and Iran saying that it won't negotiate on a nuclear deal until the Israeli bombardment stops.
08:06Whit.
08:06Marcus Moore, thank you.
08:08And President Trump flying back to the White House tonight for a meeting with his national security team on Iran.
08:13Let's get right to ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selena Wang.
08:16And Selena, what more are you learning about this important meeting?
08:19Well, Whit, this is a high-stakes meeting.
08:21As President Trump continues to weigh his options,
08:24the clock is ticking on that two-week deadline to decide whether to strike inside Iran.
08:29Now, those B-2 stealth bombers that Marcus mentioned, they are moving towards Guam,
08:33but that doesn't mean Trump has made his final decision.
08:36Trump's been speaking with a flurry of advisers and allies for advice,
08:40including with MAGA podcaster Steve Bannon, who has no official position in the government,
08:45but sources tell us that he's been playing an outsized role,
08:48speaking to the president by phone and meeting with Trump for lunch this past week.
08:53Now, there's currently a split within the Republican Party,
08:55and voices like Bannon's are urging the president to hold back,
09:00claiming that U.S. military intervention would break Trump's campaign promise to end all wars.
09:06The president has also been warned.
09:08Sources tell us that a U.S. military strike on the Iranian nuclear facility would be risky.
09:13Those 30,000-pound bunker-busting bombs have been tested before,
09:17but, Whit, they've never been used in war.
09:19Selena Wang for us.
09:21Tune in to This Week tomorrow morning.
09:23Jonathan Karl speaks with Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Tom Cotton
09:27about potential U.S. military involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict.
09:32Now to the emotional reunion for a Columbia University graduate and pro-Palestinian activist.
09:37Mahmoud Khalil is back with his wife and infant son after more than three months in a detention center.
09:44A judge ordered his release on Friday.
09:46He was detained after the Trump administration accused him of being a security threat.
09:50The Trump administration is vowing to appeal his release and still wants him deported.
09:55Here's ABC's Phil Lipoff.
09:59Tonight, the family reunion 104 days in the making.
10:03Columbia University graduate and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil back in New York,
10:08greeting his wife and infant son at Newark Airport.
10:11Released overnight from an immigration jail in Louisiana,
10:14a federal judge saying he was neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community.
10:19Just the fact that I am here, it's a message.
10:22The fact that all these attempts to suppress pro-Palestine voices have failed now.
10:32So this is the message.
10:33My existence is a message.
10:35The Palestinian existence is a message to this administration.
10:38The 30-year-old green card holder and permanent resident who recently received a graduate degree from Columbia.
10:44You're going to be under arrest.
10:46So turn around, turn around, turn around.
10:48Arrested in March in the lobby of his New York City apartment.
10:51His pregnant American citizen wife watching as federal agents handcuffed him and put him in an unmarked car.
10:58Secretary of State Marco Rubio invoking a rarely cited law saying Khalil should be deported
11:03because his presence here in the United States threatens the administration's goal of fighting anti-Semitism.
11:09The battle over Khalil's future will continue.
11:13The Trump administration still wants to deport him, but for now they can't unless they seek a different legal avenue to do so.
11:20Whit.
11:21Phil Lipoff, thank you.
11:23Alarming new details tonight about the suspect and the shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses that left one couple dead.
11:30The FBI is saying that the alleged killer, Vance Bolter, and his wife were doomsday preppers.
11:35Court documents also say that Bolter allegedly told his family to prepare for war.
11:41Here's ABC's Ike Jachi.
11:43Tonight, what authorities are saying in a newly unsealed court filing about the suspect in that deadly Minnesota shooting that left two dead and two seriously injured.
11:52In a newly unsealed affidavit, authorities say the suspect, Vance Bolter, and his wife were preppers, people who prepare for emergencies, disasters, or disruptions to social order.
12:04According to the filing, after withdrawing all the money in his bank account, Bolter sent a text message telling his family something to the effect of preparing for war
12:12and that people with guns may be showing up to the house, adding that at some point he gave his wife a bailout plan in case of emergencies.
12:20Authorities say Belter's wife, who is not a suspect in this investigation, allowed police to search her vehicle, allegedly finding at least $10,000 in a safe, two handguns, and Belter's passport.
12:33According to a search warrant, his wife also telling authorities Belter had also purchased a silicone mask on Amazon.
12:40Authorities this week saying Belter planned the attack carefully.
12:43He used the internet and other tools to find their addresses and names, the names of the family members.
12:50He conducted surveillance of their homes.
12:54Authorities also searching other properties associated with the suspect, saying they found a duffel bag containing five body bags at a storage unit in Minneapolis,
13:03as well as gun cases and cleaning supplies, according to the affidavit.
13:07And after searching his home in Green Isle, authorities say they discovered roughly $18,000 in cash, two boxes of masks, and nearly 50 firearms,
13:18along with a note card with the names of public officials and the states they live in.
13:22Whit, these deadly attacks on lawmakers and threats against officials are reaching historic highs.
13:27As for Vance Belter, he remains in custody, and his next court hearing is scheduled for June 27th.
13:33Whit.
13:34Ike Jachi, thank you.
13:35Now to a Wisconsin couple accused of an elaborate poison plot.
13:39Prosecutors say they allegedly conspired to use poisons, including cyanide and hydrogen sulfide,
13:45against two women who one of the suspects had briefly dated.
13:49Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.
13:51Tonight, authorities in hazmat suits descending on a Wisconsin home as part of their investigation into this couple,
13:58accused of orchestrating an elaborate plot to poison, stalk, and kill two women one of the suspects previously dated.
14:04Prosecutors alleging Paul Van Duyne Jr. and Andrea Whitaker attempted to poison the women with deadly substances,
14:11including cyanide, on multiple occasions and for weeks, according to a criminal complaint.
14:15One alleged victim speaking at a Friday court hearing.
14:18I no longer feel safe.
14:20Not in my own home.
14:21Not out in the community.
14:22I am scared for myself.
14:24I'm scared for my two children.
14:27I cannot sleep soundly.
14:28Prosecutors say the incident first took place in April, when the couple allegedly broke into one of the victim's cars
14:34and filled her gym water bottle with cyanide and thallium, a highly toxic metal.
14:38They say just days later, the couple putting a tote bag full of hydrogen sulfide in the trunk,
14:44sickening the victim's younger sister.
14:46Prosecutors also say on another occasion, the couple stashed Abran, a toxic plant protein, inside the vehicle's air vents.
14:53Authorities say the case broke weeks later in May, when according to court documents,
14:57one of the victims was hospitalized with severe stomach pain after drinking from her water bottle.
15:02Doctors finding dangerous levels of cyanide and thallium, investigators say the woman then went through old text messages,
15:09pointing detectives to Van Dwyne, who she said she met on a dating app two years prior.
15:14The truth is I barely knew him, and yet he and his accomplice decided that I should die.
15:20Authorities arresting Van Dwyne last week after they say they found him surveilling one of the victims,
15:25finding a trail camera pointed at her home, then apprehending his girlfriend Whitaker a day later
15:30after they say they observed her removing evidence from her boyfriend's residence.
15:34And Whit, both suspects pleading not guilty to misdemeanor charges.
15:37They've also been charged with stalking and attempted homicide.
15:41They're due back in court later this summer.
15:43Whit?
15:43Morgan Norwood, our thanks to you tonight.
15:45There's much more ahead on World News Tonight this Saturday,
15:48including breaking news out of New York City, a boat crash with multiple injuries.
15:53Plus the fiery tragedy in the sky, multiple deaths reported when a hot air balloon caught fire and crashed.
15:59And what police are now saying about the death of celebrity chef Ann Burrell.
16:05Next tonight in New York City, a boat crashed into a dock this afternoon.
16:10Police are calling it a mass casualty incident.
16:12About 400 people were on board the boat when it struck the dock along the Hudson River.
16:17At least 10 people were hurt.
16:19Their injuries are believed to be minor.
16:21Police are investigating what caused the crash.
16:24Horrifying images from Brazil tonight.
16:26Investigators say video posted on social media is being used to determine why a hot air balloon suddenly caught fire.
16:33There were 21 people on board that balloon.
16:36At least 8 were killed when the balloon came crashing down in Praia Grande in southern Brazil.
16:4213 others were rushed to the hospital.

17:14She was 55 years old.

18:11Congratulations.
18:12Woo-hoo.
18:13I'll give you a new heart.
18:15Yay, that's wonderful.
18:17At six years old, John Henry had already been through three separate surgeries.
