00:00People have always told me that they've hated my cyber-goth style.
00:04My mom and my boyfriend both want me to embrace my Vietnamese side.
00:08My mom especially because she doesn't like to see me struggling with accepting who I
00:13am.
00:14I always felt like I didn't belong with this group because of all the prejudice that I
00:18faced growing up.
00:19I'm finally changing it up, but I'm not quite sure that I'm going to be able to pull it
00:23off.
00:24I don't think I've ever seen your cheeks that red before.
00:31Also, I have surprise for you in here, very tiny.
00:36Hi!
00:37Oh my god, look at you!
00:41Are you the makeup artist?
00:42Yes, I am.
00:43I'm so excited.
00:44Come on in.
00:45My name is Faye.
00:46I'm 23 years old.
00:47My style is cyber-goth with elements of visual color.
00:51My style is cyber-goth with elements of visual K and black metal.
00:56If I could summarize my look, I would say post-apocalyptic, haunted doll, scary spirit.
01:02I get my inspiration from a lot of horror movies.
01:06My goal is to look like a vengeful type of spirit.
01:09My boyfriend, Stefan, he's been a really big support to my self-expression.
01:14I always think it's beautiful, seeing what she can do with her makeup or her new style.
01:18It always is interesting to see.
01:20Stefan has always wanted me to embrace my culture, so today we're going to turn me into
01:26a more modest, traditional, Vietnamese girl.
01:29I'm so nervous about this transformation and I'm going to need my mom's help to pull this off.
01:35May I?
01:37I need your help with something.
01:40So I've decided that I'm going to leave behind the cyber-goth today and I want to embrace our Vietnamese culture.
01:48That is so amazing.
01:52And I have something that I think is so perfect for you to wear.
01:57So today we are going to be doing more of a soft and natural look for her.
02:03It's very subtle, you can barely tell if there's any makeup.
02:06More of the pinks and browns instead of using colors, no shimmers, nothing too bold.
02:12Alright girl, if you can start taking everything off and then I'll help you remove all your makeup.
02:18I'm very apprehensive about taking out my piercings.
02:21I feel like they are my one thing that I can't step out of the house without.
02:26I'm going to use some tools for this.
02:31This is an Embry Elise moisturizer.
02:33It's actually a multi-function.
02:35I've removed the makeup because it has a moisturizer as a primer.
02:39When did you start wearing your type of look?
02:42For the cyber-goth specifically, I started back in the like maybe 2021 or 2022.
02:51But I've always been like goth.
02:54It was as young as 12 that I started dressing this way.
02:57Going to school and just blacked out eyeliner.
03:01I looked a little bit crazy but I would say that kind of kick-started me into this unconventional style.
03:08I'm going into the primer right now which is Estee Lauder.
03:11And then I'll spray to finish up the skin prep.
03:14Do you get judged by the way that you look?
03:16I definitely get judged a lot.
03:18People will stare and point, take pictures of me.
03:21At times, restaurants will have to seat us in a back corner so that I'm not disrupting any customers.
03:27People assuming that I'm not a nice person.
03:30For people to say that to me, it does hurt my feelings a bit.
03:33So I'm using NARS foundation and this is a very light to medium coverage.
03:40I'm just using a bit of a bronzer just around her face.
03:46I was born and raised here in Texas.
03:49My mother is from Vietnam.
03:51Growing up, I knew how to speak Vietnamese.
03:54But now I'm at a place where my ability to speak is stunted because of all the prejudice that I faced growing up.
04:00I think that my Vietnamese identity and my inability to connect with it definitely has limited my ability to express myself that way.
04:09I always felt like I didn't belong with this group even though it's in my blood.
04:14How do you think your mom and boyfriend are going to react to the look?
04:19I think they're going to be very surprised.
04:23This is going to be their first time seeing me without piercings, without the crazy hair.
04:29We're just going to give her almost like a small blowout.
04:35Alright girl, I think we're good.
04:37Are you ready?
04:39I'm nervous, but yes, I'm ready to see.
04:42Three, two, one.
04:45Oh my gosh.
04:50I look so mature.
04:53I do look like my mom.
04:59I actually don't hate it.
05:01Yeah, how do you feel about your outfit?
05:03It's cute.
05:04I really like it.
05:06It's a very casual kind of style, but it does show my Vietnamese roots.
05:12Yeah.
05:13I love what you did with my hair.
05:18Yeah.
05:19I look a lot more natural.
05:21I don't look like I'm going to haunt somebody.
05:24I'm excited to see what Stefan and my mom think.
05:28Oh my gosh.
05:29Do you have any idea of what to expect?
05:32No, nothing at all.
05:33I mean, it will be a change for sure.
05:36I'm open.
05:37I'm just ready to have my mind blown, so.
05:44Whoa, no way.
05:47Oh my goodness.
05:48There's so much color now.
05:50Oh my goodness.
05:51I don't think I've ever seen your cheeks that red before.
05:55Dang, we're like two totally different styles now.
06:00Do you like it?
06:01Yes.
06:02Yeah, I love it.
06:03It's so cute.
06:04It looks awesome.
06:05You look Asian now.
06:09I didn't expect it at all, but no, it looks beautiful.
06:12Totally different.
06:13Different two people.
06:15Different.
06:16It seems like I have two daughters.
06:20It's so, so beautiful.
06:23It made me feel really good to see them surprised.
06:26I could tell they loved it.
06:27That made me even more happier.
06:29I think this is helping me kind of tackle the initial issues
06:33where I kind of view myself as, you know, this is not, you know, where I belong.
06:38But now I see that I, you know, belong here.
06:40And it makes me want to, you know, immerse myself more in the culture
06:44and put forth more effort into learning the language.
06:47I have something surprise for you too.
06:51Another surprise?
06:52Yes.
06:53In here.
06:54Very tiny.
07:02Oh.
07:03It's a J Buddha.
07:05There you go.
07:06There you go.
07:07Oh.
07:08And the earring.
07:10This is more close to our culture.
07:14Sure.
07:15Sure.
07:16I'd love to see you more in this outfit too.
07:18Yeah.
07:19I'll try.
07:21Wow.
07:22Look at that.
07:23So much color.
07:24Oh, she's so...
07:27The surprise my mom gave me, you know, it's very unexpected.
07:32But, you know, jade, it holds a lot of meaning in Vietnamese culture.
07:38So to have received this from my mother, I think it meant a lot to me just as much as it meant a lot to her.
07:45And I will be treasuring these pieces and maybe trying to incorporate them into my future looks.
07:50And I will be in the future looks.
07:51And I will be in the future.
07:52And I will be in the future looks.
07:53Yeah.
07:54So that's the way she got to do it.
07:55Look at that, I'll be in the future looks.
